Online football and Muay Thai gambling are expected to be legalized, according to Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong.

Phuket Scams Surge: 5,500 Victims and 413 Million Baht Lost

Phuket is witnessing an alarming rise in financial fraud, with over 5,500 individuals falling victim to scams in the past year, resulting in cumulative losses of 413 million baht. These figures were confirmed by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Region 5.

There has been a sharp increase in scam activities since 2022. Last year, while there were 1,365 reported victims, who collectively lost 10.9 million baht. The numbers jumped dramatically in 2023 to 3,538 victims with 18.8 million baht in losses. By 2024, the figures skyrocketed to 5,510 victims, with financial damages amounting to 413 million baht. Phuket eyes Bt500 billion in revenue for 2025

Phuket expects to achieve 500 billion baht in tourism revenue this year, said Sophon Suwannarat, the island’s provincial governor. He added that the resort island’s tourism revenue was deemed successful last year.

The north, northeast, central including Bangkok, and eastern regions will experience a hot day and isolated thundershowers today, the Thai Meteorological Department said. These conditions are due to the southerly and southeasterly winds bringing moisture from the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to the upper country, the department said.

The Ministry of Transport is considering moving the capital’s inter-provincial bus terminals to Krungthep Aphiwat Central Terminal in an effort to ensure a seamless connection for travelers with the city’s mass transport network.

Myanmar scam center survivors recall torture and coercion

Inside a Thai military camp, four Ethiopian men yesterday showed the bruises and scars on their bodies they said were sustained during their time in one of Myanmar’s most notorious scam compounds. “I got a lot of punishments,” said 19-year-old Yotor, who gave only one name and had cuts along his leg. “I received electric shocks every day.”

Thailand Faces Surge in Influenza: 100,000 Cases, 9 Deaths

Thailand is grappling with a serious influenza outbreak, having witnessed nearly 100,000 infections alongside nine fatalities in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed this increase, underlining schools as significant hotspots. In response, the government is mobilizing efforts, including the distribution of 4.5 million vaccine doses, to curb further spread.

Cyber Police in about-face on scam workers: Most were trafficked

The cyber police said most of the 260 scam workers who have been screened are victims, with only two to three having volunteered to work for the call-center criminals rather just one of them being trafficked as earlier stated.

The head of the Technology Crime Suppression Division police, said 50 cyber policemen are working with frontline agencies in collecting information on criminal activities of these call-center gangs. They are also checking information on mobile phones and other electronic devices of the 260 scam workers who crossed over from Myanmar’s Myawaddy township to Phop Phra district of Tak province. New Casino Rules May Bar Thais Without $1.5M Fixed Deposits

State revenue grows 2.1% in first months of fiscal year

The Revenue Department reported its revenue collection in the first two months of fiscal 2025 grew 2.1% year-on-year, attributed to efforts to bring individuals outside the tax system into compliance and stricter enforcement of tax evasion measures.

Upgrade of Hua Hin Airport to continue next year

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Saturday the ministry had ordered the Department of Airports, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other agencies to develop Hua Hin’s operations, including acquiring a certificate to operate it as an international airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), said the development plan for Hua Hin Airport consists of two major projects. The first, expanding the runway, has been completed. The second, work on related infrastructure aspects of the airport, such as the runway tunnel over the highway, still need 300 billion baht and budget approval. Continued …

“It will be the end of Hua Hin as a laid back beach town resort. Tourist operators from China, India and Russia will promote Hua Hin as a place to have a vacation.”

“Heard this rubbish for years and they cannot even get a single service yet from Singapore or KL . And, of course, if you noticed the traffic congestion already in peak season, and the new train station, the road system will also need upgrades. Have they planned for that?”

Hua Hin is home to an active Norwegian motorcycle “gang” that call itself “Kubik Gjengen”. The group is far from a hard-core gang but more like a touring group of about 40 Norwegians.

Rama II Road reopens after crane accident caused fatalities

Commuters can breathe a sigh of relief as traffic resumes on Rama II Road following a harrowing crane accident that claimed six lives and injured nine, leaving a trail of disruption in its wake.

Wild Elephant Kills Man in Prachinburi

Yesterday, a wild elephant from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary crossed into a village in Prachinburi Province, fatally attacking a 45-year-old man near a sugarcane field.

The Kabin Buri Police Station was notified of the incident in the early morning. The victim was found dead on the edge of a sugarcane field. Construction Workers Found Dead After Landslide on Koh Samui

In an incident on Koh Samui, Surat Thani, a landslide caused by heavy rain buried the makeshift shelters of construction workers, leaving two men from Myanmar missing. The workers were stationed at a site where four vacation homes were being constructed located on a hillside.

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Heavy rain in Hua Hin and Cha Am are anticipated to impact tourism during the upcoming three-day holiday, potentially worsening domestic visitor numbers. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) identified natural disasters as a critical factor to monitor during the high season.

Earlier this week, continuous rainfall led to flooding in Cha Am, Hua Hin, and parts of Phetkasem Highway, with water levels measuring between 20 and 40 centimeters. Consumer confidence index plunges to lowest in 14 months

The rising cost of living and the severe flooding in several areas of Thailand are among the reasons the consumer confidence index has once again dropped, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said on Thursday.

UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting reported that Thailand’s consumer confidence index in September stood at 55.3, dropping from 56.5 in July. The index has been falling for seven consecutive months and is now the lowest in 14 months, or since August 2023. Continued …

World Bank lowers Thailand’s GDP growth forecast from 2.8% to 2.4%

The World Bank has reduced Thailand’s GDP growth forecast for 2024 to 2.4%, while projecting that the Chinese economy will decline from 4.8% this year to 4.3% in 2025, owing to a weak property market and low consumer and investor confidence.

State revenue collection on course to hit target

The Finance Ministry is confident that revenue collection for fiscal 2024, which ended on Sept. 30, met its target as collections gradually improved, bolstered by higher contributions than expected from the Revenue Department and state-owned enterprises.

Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said the latest report on net revenue collection from the Finance Ministry indicates for the first 11 months of fiscal 2024 (October 2023 to August 2024), the government collected net revenue (after tax refunds) of 2.452 trillion baht, which is 17.4 billion baht or 0.7% less than the target. Approvals granted to 11 out of 14 proposals for industrial estates

Some 14 industrial estates have requested approval for setting up new estates or expanding current ones this year, expecting to support factory investment of 480 billion baht, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) said.

Manufacturers’ confidence dips to 87.7 points in August

The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) fell to 87.7 points in August amid a stagnant economy, a strengthening baht and the impact of severe flooding in the north, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Thailand’s rice exports surge 22% in first 7 months

Thailand’s rice exports rose 21.97% in the first seven months of 2024 compared to a year earlier, driven by rising global demand, as rice-importing countries seek to secure stocks amid food security concerns, official data showed on Wednesday.

The Southeast Asian country shipped out 5.68 million tons of rice during the January-July period, worth 132.4 billion baht (about 3.7 billion U.S. dollars), representing a 50.97% jump in export value year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Commerce. Continued …

Navy rescues 130 tourists stranded on an island off Phuket

About 130 Thai and foreign tourists, mostly Chinese, were safely rescued yesterday after they became stranded on Racha Yai Island, off Phuket, due to rough seas and strong winds, making it impossible for the tourist speed boats to pick them up.

Alerted by a call for help, the Royal Thai Navy sent a coastal patrol vessel to the island to take the stranded tourists back to the shore of Phuket. A naval officer said that the rescue mission was hampered by rough seas, but all the tourists were safely rescued. Continued …

Thailand’s energy-related CO2 emissions down 2.5% in first half of 2024

Thailand’s carbon dioxide emissions from energy usage from January to June stood at 121.9 million tons, down 2.5% year on year (YoY), the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) reported on Wednesday. The office said electricity generation emitted the most CO2 at 48.1 million tons, increasing 5.8% YoY.

In second place was the transport sector, which emitted 41.5 million tons of CO2, down 1.2% YoY. The industrial sector, meanwhile, emitted 25.6 million tons of CO2, decreasing 16.8% YoY. Continued …

Landslide Buries Workers Inside High-Speed Rail Tunnel Construction

Yesterday, a landslide buried three vehicles and trapped workers inside a tunnel being constructed for the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project in Chanut subdistrict, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima. The incident occurred while workers were excavating the tunnel, located between 600 meters and 2 Km deep into the tunnel.

Wthe workers have been found alive and rescue teams are working tirelessly to retrieve them from 6 metres beneath the debris. According to witnesses, workers were operating backhoes and loaders when the mountainside suddenly gave way, causing a massive landslide that engulfed three vehicles, including a supervisor’s car. Investment continues to contract

Investment, a key driver of Thailand’s economy, contracted in Q2 for the third consecutive quarter, decreasing by 6.2%. Phraya Nakhon Cave pavilion’s 134th anniversary

A ceremony commemorating the 134th anniversary of the Kuha Karuhas Pavilion in the Phraya Nakhon Cave in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, saw attendance from notable figures. The pavilion, a four-gabled structure measuring 2.55 meters wide, 8 meters long, and 2.55 meters high, was built during King Chulalongkorn’s reign as a royal residence for his visits to Phraya Nakhon Cave. Police rev up crackdown on illegal exhausts to silence street racers

Police in Thailand conducted a nationwide crackdown on the illegal sale of modified motorcycle exhausts, seizing nearly 1,000 items to curb street racing gangs, in an operation targeting manufacturers, storage facilities, and retailers across several provinces.

Thailand mulls allowing foreigners to buy 75% of condo units

The Thai Cabinet has tasked the Interior Ministry with amending the Condominium Act to increase the foreign ownership limit in condominium projects from 49% to 75%. Additionally, they have been directed to modify the Land Act to allow foreigners to lease land for 99 years, up from the current 50 years.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated on Friday that the Land Act requires minimal changes. The existing law already permits a 50-year lease with an option to extend for another 50 years. The amendment aims to ensure foreign investors can secure land for up to 99 years in a single lease contract, enhancing investment confidence and viability. Continued …

Power generation investment to reach Bt1 trillion within 6 years

Investment in the development of new electricity generation facilities, aimed at promoting renewable energy, is expected to reach 1 trillion baht over the next six years under the novel power development plan (PDP), says Energy Permanent Secretary Prasert Sinsukprasert.

Thailand approves VAT on cheap imported goods

Thailand has approved the collection of 7% value-added tax (VAT) on imported goods sold for less than 1,500 baht (US$40.93) from July to December, a finance ministry official said on Friday.

Imported goods sold for less than 1,500 baht are currently exempt from VAT in Thailand. After December, there will be a law change to allow the revenue department to continue collecting VAT on such products. Continued … 

Thai exports surge to $26.22 billion in May

Thai exports in May hit their highest value in 14 months, coming in at US$26.22 billion (961.75 billion baht) and marking a 7.2% increase.

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Office of Trade Policy and Strategy, said on Friday that this surge resulted in a trade surplus for the first time in five months. Exports, excluding oil-related products, gold and military products, grew by 6.5%. Continued …

Progress on the Southern Economic Project, known as the land bridge connecting the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, has garnered significant international interest, according to Suriya Jungrungreangkit, deputy prime minister and minister of transport.
