Petrol, diesel pump prices cut

The energy minister yesterday ordered a reduction in pump prices of 50 satang per liter for diesel and 30 satang for all kinds of petrol, effective from 5am today.

The price of standard diesel will fall from 31.44 baht to 30.94 baht per liter. Retailers will decide whether to apply the cut to premium diesel. Continued …

Bangkok’s Major Bus Terminals to Stay, Relocation Scrapped

The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that Bangkok’s three main intercity bus terminals – Mo Chit 2, Ekkamai, and Sai Tai – will not relocate to Bang Sue Grand Station as previously considered. Instead, plans focus on enhancing the existing facilities and transport connectivity.

Belarusian model kidnapped from Bangkok, killed for organs by scammers in Myanmar

A young Belarusian model who traveled to Bangkok for a job interview on Sept. 20 was abducted and taken to a scam center in Myanmar where she was murdered and her organs sold, according to media reports.

According to these reports the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the incident involving Vera Kravtsova, 26, and is assisting the family through diplomatic channels. Her mother has reportedly negotiated with the scammers, who agreed to return her ashes without payment. She plans to travel to Myanmar to handle the remains. Continued …

More Thai rivers and downstream communities at risk from Myanmar’s rare earth mines

New satellite data identified 513 sites of rare-earth mining that have cropped up across at least six key tributaries of the Mekong, Salween, and Irrawaddy rivers in Myanmar over the past 10 years. These include 40 believed to have opened this year alone, with the total marking a dramatic increase from previous estimates and suggesting the risk of transboundary river pollution is significantly higher than once thought.

Thailand Plans Jan 31 House Dissolution, March 29 Election Day

The Thai government has tentatively set January 31st as the date for dissolving the House, aiming to hold a general election on March 29. The plan also includes proposing a new Constitution and conducting a public referendum. These steps are part of the agreement with the opposition People’s Party, promising dissolution after four months in office.

Since the government began its term on Oct.1, the timeline dictates the House must dissolve by the end of January. Following this, the general election should occur within 60 days, making March 29 the proposed date. The passage of the new Constitution needs to be completed by Dec. 20, allowing time for an official referendum on the same day as the election, potentially saving approximately six billion baht by combining the events. Bangkok’s giant sinkhole expanding

The filling of the huge sinkhole on Bangkok’s Samsen Road will require much more sand that earlier thought because it’s getting bigger, according to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority.

The MRTA said yesterday the original sinkhole was 30 meters wide, 30 meters long and 20 meters deep, but had since expanded and was still getting bigger. The initial estimate that about 8,000 cubic meters of sand would be needed to fill it was now not enough. Continued …

Thai army postpones border conflict talks with Cambodia

The 2nd Army has postponed indefinitely the planned Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting with Cambodia, citing Phnom Penh’s failure to present a clear plan for the withdrawal of heavy weaponry and for landmine clearance.

Thai Industrial Confidence Rises First Time In Seven Months

Thai industrial sentiment rebounded in September, climbing for the first time in seven months. The latest survey by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), released yesterday, shows the Industrial Confidence Index (ICI) rising to 87.8, up from 86.4 in August.

Thailand’s Grim Motorcycle Death Toll Sparks Helmet Campaign

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) has called on all motorcyclists to wear helmets, following a devastating year of road casualties. Over 14,000 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents across the country in 2024 alone.

(Editor: While wearing helmets when riding a motorcycle is a good idea, the headgear typically used is not the answer to significantly reducing road deaths in Thailand. First, the types of helmets usually used are cheap and break easily, affording very little in the way of safety. The cost of helmets that can actually provide protection is probably more than most Thais can afford. And second, what is needed is driver education programs – required before getting a license. The problems on the roads are reckless and careless driving, not headgear.)

Statistics from three government agencies paint a worrying picture of road safety. From 2020 to 2024, an average of 17,428 people died annually in road traffic incidents, with motorcycles involved in 80% of these fatalities. The figures for 2024 were particularly dire, with 17,447 road deaths recorded, of which 14,144 were linked to motorcycle accidents. On average, this means three people died every two hours. Booking.com reports that four out of the five most popular destinations for the Thai New Year period are seaside locations, with both domestic and international tourists eagerly seeking beach escapes.

Thailand’s low inflation no obstacle to economic growth, central bank chief says

Phuket is witnessing an alarming rise in financial fraud, with over 5,500 individuals falling victim to scams in the past year, resulting in cumulative losses of 413 million baht. These figures were confirmed by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Region 5.

There has been a sharp increase in scam activities since 2022. Last year, while there were 1,365 reported victims, who collectively lost 10.9 million baht. The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Thailand Faces Surge in Influenza: 100,000 Cases, 9 Deaths

Thailand is grappling with a serious influenza outbreak, having witnessed nearly 100,000 infections alongside nine fatalities in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health has confirmed this increase, underlining schools as significant hotspots. In response, the government is mobilizing efforts, including the distribution of 4.5 million vaccine doses, to curb further spread.

Since the start of the year, the country has recorded 99,057 influenza cases, marking a sharp increase from late January’s 7,819 cases — a jump of 91,238 in just over two weeks. This spike not only surpasses the five-year average but also eclipses last year’s figures. Continued …

Cyber Police in about-face on scam workers: Most were trafficked

The cyber police said most of the 260 scam workers who have been screened are victims, with only two to three having volunteered to work for the call-center criminals rather just one of them being trafficked as earlier stated.

The head of the Technology Crime Suppression Division police, said 50 cyber policemen are working with frontline agencies in collecting information on criminal activities of these call-center gangs. They are also checking information on mobile phones and other electronic devices of the 260 scam workers who crossed over from Myanmar’s Myawaddy township to Phop Phra district of Tak province. New Casino Rules May Bar Thais Without $1.5M Fixed Deposits

Thailand is eyeing ambitious advancements in its tourism sector by proposing a multi-faceted gaming industry centered around new casino laws. However, these regulations have sparked discussions, given their stringent conditions for Thai locals wishing to enter casinos.

According to a draft released by the Office of the Council of State, Thai nationals must maintain fixed deposits totaling 50 million baht (approximately $1.5 million) for at least six months to gain entry to these casinos. Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) forecasts the country’s economy to expand by 2.8% in 2025, supported by rising government spending and tourism recovery.

Danucha Pichayanan, NESDC secretary-general, reported yesterday that Thailand’s economy grew 3.2% in Q4/2024, bringing the full-year growth to 2.5%, up from 2% in 2023. State revenue grows 2.1% in first months of fiscal year

The Revenue Department reported its revenue collection in the first two months of fiscal 2025 grew 2.1% year-on-year, attributed to efforts to bring individuals outside the tax system into compliance and stricter enforcement of tax evasion measures.
