Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. Majority of foreign expats will not file tax returns, 55% consider moving out of Thailand

A survey of readers from among expats living in Thailand, in addition to those considering a move to Thailand, shows that a majority may not file tax returns as required by March 31, 2025. Furthermore, the poll revealed that 55% of respondents had considered traveling out of Thailand during 2024 to avoid a tax liability.

The poll comes as the Thai government last week revealed that its tax collection target for 2024 had not been met. This shortfall was reportedly blamed on an exchange rate blip due to a strengthening baht. Continued …

Heavy rain and flash flood warnings for southern Thailand

Heavy rain is set to lash the southern regions of Thailand, prompting the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) to issue warnings of flash floods and overflowing mountain streams in 10 provinces. Meanwhile, the northern areas will experience a drop in temperatures.

On the southeastern coast, thunderstorms are expected to cover 70% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat. Morning temperatures will range from 22 to 25°C, with highs of 31 to 34°C. Continued …

Bangkok mandates microchipping, limits of pets per owner

Bangkok is set to enforce a new regulation requiring all dogs and cats to be microchipped, alongside measures to control stray animal populations and manage dangerous dogs.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Council (BMC) has recently approved a draft ordinance regarding pet ownership and stray animals. Naphaphon Chirakul, a member of the BMC for the Bang Khun Non district, and head of the special committee reviewing the draft, emphasized the importance of these measures for preventing nuisances and health risks associated with animals. High blood pressure tops Thai outpatients’ medical woes

High blood pressure was the top medical condition among universal healthcare service outpatients in 2023, according to Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO).

NHSO Secretary-general Dr. Jadet Thammathataree said on Sunday that in the fiscal year 2023, a budget of 99.7 billion baht was allocated to care for 47.727 million eligible Thais, which equated to 3,386 baht per head. Continued …

The Department of Special Investigation is listing the suspects who will additionally face fraudulent borrowing, aka pyramid scheme, charges in The iCon Group direct marketing case.

DSI Acting Secretary-general Yuthana Phraedam said the DSI had discussed The iCon Group case with representatives of the Consumer Protection Board and the Fiscal Policy Office and received useful information to support its plan to charge suspects with fraudulent borrowing or pyramid scheme charges. M16 rifle linked to over 25 deaths in southern Thailand

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. The NESDC Office explained that living in their own houses also counted as a cost poor families did not have to bear. Continued …

Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

The company’s managing director, Kessara Thanyalakpark, said that rising household debt was among factors that hurt Bangkokians’ ability to purchase houses. “Currently, there is a disconnect between the demand for housing and the high prices set by property developers,” she said. Continued …

In September, the Thai economy saw a slowdown in economic activities, with exports declining and private consumption and manufacturing production decreasing. Despite this, government spending increased, and foreign tourism receipts improved.

Foreign investment in Thailand surges 60% in first 9 months

Foreign investment in Thailand rallied 60% to 134 billion baht in value for the first nine months of this year, with Japan continuing to top the list of source countries, a government spokesman said on Sunday.

Jirayu Houngsub, spokesman for the prime minister’s ffice, said a total of 636 businesses were granted permission under the Foreign Business Act of 1999, up 29% year-on-year. The investments created employment for 2,505 Thai workers. Continued … 

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. In the first nine months, Thailand’s imports amounted to $229.1328 billion, a 5.5% increase, resulting in a trade deficit of $5.9568 billion, or nearly 200 billion baht. Continued …

Chinese goods flood northeastern checkpoints

One issue the private sector has urged the government to address is the continuous influx of Chinese goods into Thailand, which significantly impacts 23 industry groups, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking reported that in the first half of 2024, Thailand’s imports of Chinese goods increased by 7.1%, amounting to US$37.57 billion. This led to a trade deficit with China of $19.97 billion, a rise of 15.7% from 2023. Continued …

Foundation documents impact of plastic waste in Thailand

Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

The report indicates that Thailand’s primary plastic production generated up to 27.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) annually, which was equal to greenhouse gas emission from 5.9 million cars. Continued …

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Chiang Mai Authority has backed a Thai-Chinese waste-to-energy power plant that is expected to take two years to complete. The joint investment agreement, valued at 2.3 billion baht, was signed on Friday.

PEA leads network partners to restore electricity system for flood victims

From the situation of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides from Typhoon Yangi and Typhoon Soulik, more than 100,000 people in the northern and northeastern regions have been affected, causing widespread damage, such as: electrical systems in homes or even Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution systems.

Mud removers warned over price-gouging in flood-hit provinces

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has instructed officials at Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) to take legal action against backhoe operators in flood-hit provinces for increasing mud-removal fees.

Indian move puts more pressure on Thai rice prices

India is preparing to resume exports of non-basmati white rice, as inventories in the world’s biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop. New Delhi set a floor price for non-basmati exports at $490 per ton, a government order said.

India on Friday also reduced the export duty on parboiled rice to 10% from 20% earlier, a move that will lower its export prices, increase shipments and force competing countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and Myanmar to reduce their prices, as well. Continued …

THAI to terminate Thai Smile for good, CEO says

Thai Airways International will no longer keep its loss-ridden Thai Smile Airways budget airline, but will terminate it now that it has transferred a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 planes to THAI, the parent airline’s chief executive officer said.

THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri said that after the fleet was transferred to be under operation by THAI, they generated more income than when they were under operation of Thai Smile. Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. In 2022, his research team reported that an estimated 25.3 million metric tons of plastic waste has entered our oceans, and nearly two-thirds of that cannot be monitored. Continued …

Law to tax income from overseas in the works

The Thai Revenue Department is drafting a law to tax the income of individuals residing in Thailand that originates from overseas. The draft follows the international principle of worldwide income under the residence rule, said Kulaya Tantitemit, the director-general of the department.

This principle holds that income earned by an individual, regardless of its source country, must be taxed by the country where the individual resides for a specified period. Continued …

Loss of forest areas in Nan of concern

The northern province of Nan is home to one of the country’s key watershed forests, the source of several major waterways, including the Chao Phraya River. This forest area was declared a first-grade national forest in the 1960s.

The 17,000gt cruise ship Ocean Dream has been anchored off the port of Laem Chabang for more than a year, before it finally took on water and became partially submerged about 2 kilometers off Laem Chabang.

In August 2012, Ocean Dream had begun twice-weekly sailings from Thailand’s Laem Chabang, calling at Ko Samui and Sihanoukville, Cambodia. AOT aiming high with airport plans

Airports of Thailand (AOT) has outlined an expansion of its six international airports to manage 210 million passengers by 2032. Kerati Kijmanawat, AOT director, on Friday outlined the Ministry of Transport’s strategic plan for 2023-2027, which aims to make Thailand a regional aviation hub.

As part of that, he said that Suvarnabhumi International Airport aims to have 120 million passengers by 2030, while Don Mueang International Airport expects to reach 40 million in the same year. Chiang Mai International Airport will serve 20 million passengers by 2032, Phuket International Airport will handle 18 million passengers by 2028, and Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and Krabi International Airport will each serve 6 million passengers by 2032. Singapore to build mega airport terminal

Singapore will start construction of a new mega terminal at its Changi Airport in the first half of next year, aiming to lift the aviation hub’s annual passenger handling capacity by another 50 million.

Two Russians among 10 killed in Phuket landslide

Ten people were killed when their houses were buried by a landslide in Phuket province on Friday. The landslide from the Nakkerd Mountain killed two Russians, six Myanmars and one Thai citizen. As for the 10th deceased, there is no information regarding nationality yet.

The Royal Thai Army has appointed a military lawyer to monitor a police investigation into the fatal shooting of one of its intelligence officers in an unlicensed Hua Hin bar that was open after the legal closing time. The army sargeant reportedly was shot in the back of the head.

Nine confirmed dead in Chachoengsao plane crash

A small plane carrying nine people, including passengers and crew, crashed just 10 minutes after takeoff in Chachoengsao province yesterday. All on board are dead. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, when officials began the grim task of recovering the wreckage in Moo 6, Ban Khao Din, Bang Pakong district.

Deadly new mpox strain hits Thailand

Thailand confirmed its first case of a potentially deadlier strain of mpox, marking Asia’s first encounter with the virus variant known as Clade 1b. This development follows hot on the heels of the first reported case outside Africa, in Sweden, just a week ago.

Changan to open Thai EV factory next March

Changan Automobile’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia is set to open in Thailand in the first quarter of next year, with a total investment budget exceeding 10 billion baht.

“We expect to start producing battery EVs in March 2025,” said Shen Xinghua, managing director of Changan Auto Southeast Asia, a subsidiary of the Chongqing-based company. Thai Survey Reveals 44.3% Highly Satisfied with Government Performance

A recently released survey by the Thai Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has unveiled intriguing insights into public opinion on government performance. Conducted between April 22 and May 15, the survey involved 6,970 participants aged 16 and older, who were interviewed in person.

The results show that a substantial 83.9% of respondents regularly keep up with government public information. Thai Authorities Bust Major Tiger Cub Trafficking Operation

Yesterday, Thai authorities successfully executed a sting operation in Bueng Kan province, foiling an illegal wildlife trafficking scheme involving a valuable tiger cub. The would-be sellers sought a substantial profit of 300,000 baht, equivalent to roughly US$8,200.

Changed again: Handout to be ‘paid out at same time’

PM discusses with tax departments ways to improve revenue collection

Executives of the Revenue, Excise and Customs departments were called to a meeting by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Wednesday after revenue collection in the first seven months reportedly missed the target by 2.4%, or 35.49 billion baht.
