Warning: It’s heat stroke weather

Heat stroke is a real danger with “feels like” temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius possible in the current humid conditions, the weather office warns.

The Meteorological Department said that on Tuesday feels-like temperatures peaked at 50.6°C in Trat, 48.1°C in Bangkok, 42.5°C in Krabi, 39.9°C in Tak and 38.7°C in Nakhon Ratchasima. Continued …

Temperatures predicted to exceed 40 degrees next week

Temperatures are expected to surpass 40 degrees Celsius in several provinces next week, as tomorrow the “heat index” is expected to reach 48.1 degrees in Bangkok and 51.4 degrees in Chon Buri, according to Somkuan Tonjan, head of the Central Weather Forecast Division of the Meteorological Department.

The Heat index, also known as the apparent temperature. is what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature. This has important implications for the body’s comfort. Continued …

Phuket Authorities Conduct Extensive Land Inquiry After Swiss Man Case

Even though Mr. Fehr, also known as David, the Swiss man accused of kicking a female doctor, is currently facing deportation, he has been ordered to stay in the country while he is investigated for several issues, including his involvement in Phuket property ownership.

Foreign man caught on CCTV stealing Thai flag in Phuket

A CCTV camera caught a foreign man stealing a Thai flag from outside an office in Phuket. Thai netizens urged the police to take the case seriously as the Thai flag is highly respected by locals.

The Jootee Tin Dredging Co. shared CCTV footage of the theft to a Facebook page yesterday. The video shows a foreign man pulling the Thai flag from its pole outside the Jutee Tin Dredging office and walking away with it on the Phang Nga Road in the Mueang district of Phuket. Continued …

Thailand’s social security fund faces bankruptcy risk in 30-40 years

The Labo r Ministry raised the alarm that the Social Security Fund (SSF) of Thailand is on the brink of bankruptcy, and could be insolvent in 30 to 40 years if there are no changes made to its current policies.

This warning was issued during a meeting between the newly established Social Security Board (SSB) headed by Sustarum Thammaboosadee, an academic from Thammasat University, and officials from the Labor Ministry. Tax breaks triple Thailand’s electric vehicle registrations

Huge road tax discounts saw the registration of electric vehicles soar by over 300% in the first four months of fiscal 2024 (October-January), Thailand’s Department of Land Transport (DLT) said on Tuesday.

A total of 48,096 EVs were registered during the period, up 324% from 11,340 in the same period a year earlier. The DLT attributed the jump to the annual tax break for newly registered complete built-up EVs, which began in May last year and will run until November 2025. Continued …

Consumers biggest losers as speeds drop, prices rise after telecom mergers

Mergers in the telecommunications industry have resulted in poor network quality and rising prices, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said on Tuesday.

NESDC was citing a recent survey by the Consumer Protection Board, which said that consumers are paying more for very little. For instance, it said, the price of a basic mobile package has risen from 349 baht to 399 baht, while the internet speed has dropped. Similarly, free call minutes included in packages of 499 or 599 baht have been reduced from 300 to 250 minutes. Continued …

Thailand criticized for captive breeding of elephants for tourism

Thailand is among the countries that that have been blamed for the captive breeding of wild animals, especially the breeding of elephants for their role in the tourism industry.

Researchers from World Animal Protection (WAP), an international non-profit animal welfare organization, estimate that 5.5 billion wild animals from 487 different species are being kept in cruel conditions worldwide, particularly bears, elephants, and lions. Continued …

Post-pandemic shift in tourist spending habits reveals TikTok’s role in Thai travel

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) divulged insightful data revealing a shift in foreign tourists’ spending habits post-pandemic and the surge in popularity of TikTok as a source of travel information and inspiration.

A survey conducted by TAT’s digital R&D Deputy Gov. Teerasil Tapen, encompassing 30,054 tourists in 2023, unveiled an increased average expenditure on individual trips, rising from 48,209 baht (US$1,345) in 2019 to 50,900 baht (US$1,420), with a significant proportion allocated to accommodation. A foreign man brought to light a discriminatory practice at a foreign-owned motorcycle rental shop in Phuket. The shop refused to serve his Thai wife and other Thai customers, justifying their decision by alleging that Thais frequently engage in motorcycle theft, complain excessively, and are unable to meet the necessary deposit requirements.

Thailand threatens to shut down Facebook

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) is planning to shut down Facebook in Thailand for doing nothing to curb sponsored advertisements on the platform that have misled people into investing billions of baht in fake schemes.

The ministry plans to request a court order to block access to Facebook’s platform in the country. Recent incidents have involved Facebook receiving money from fraudulent pages that acted as sponsors to deceive and lure people into investing, causing substantial harm to many Thai citizens and damages exceeding 100 billion baht. Elephant found dead in Pranburi had been shot

A young male elephant has been found dead in Pranburi. The discovery of the elephant, believed to be between 7 and 10 years old, has stirred local and national concern.

The elephant, identified as a wild Asian male weighing about 1,500 kilograms, was found in the Takian Yak Valley area. Officials estimated the creature had been deceased for at least one week before its discovery by a local villager. Continued …

Excise Dept mulls single tax rate for cigarettes

The Excise Department is considering setting a single tax rate for cigarettes and is preparing to negotiate with the Public Health Ministry to include e-cigarettes under its jurisdiction for seizure and fines.

According to Ekniti Nitithanprapas, director general of the Excise Department, progress is being made in the consideration of a new cigarette tax structure. The government has named 36 towns or municipalities in 25 provinces “smart cities” after they met the required criteria.

Rachada Dhnadirek, deputy government spokesperson, said on Monday that the 36 towns/municipalities had been endorsed as “smart cities” as of July. She added that another 15 towns will be named “smart” by the end of the year. Continued …

Almost 2,000 businesses forced to close in July

Many Thai businesses are struggling to continue operations, with almost 1,867 businesses shutting up shop in July, an 18.7% increase compared to the same period last year, but in line with the trends in business closures over the past five years. It is, however, the highest number for the first seven months for the past 10 years.

News sources at the Commerce Ministry reported that some of these business closures might be due to adjustments made by businesses to align with changing market conditions and consumer behaviors. The closure trend has been observed across various sectors, with general construction witnessing 175 closures (9%), the real estate sector 103 closures (6%), and hospitality/restaurants 43 closures (2%). Thailand urges ASEAN to lower or lift tax on agricultural goods

Thailand is accelerating the upgrading of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) to address pending and new trade issues, including a proposal that agricultural export taxes from Thailand, such as on chilled chicken meat, rice, and fruits, be decreased or eliminated.

The fifth meeting of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement Trade Negotiating Committee was held from July 31 to Aug. 3 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The purpose of the meeting was to negotiate and update the agreement , ensuring it remains relevant amid trade changes. Illegal cannabis dispensaries shut down in Phuket

Thirteen cannabis dispensaries in Phuket have been shut down by authorities after they were found to be operating without a license, according to the province’s Public Health Office yesterday.

According to the office’s chief physician, Kusak Kukiattikoon, there are 1,701 registered cannabis-related businesses on the island, of which 1,451 are dispensaries. Out of the 1,451 shops, 502 are located in Kathu district, 222 in Thalang district, while the rest are located in Muang Phuket district. Continued …

The Saphan Pla Walking Street on the Hua Hin fishing pier will be open for an additional day for the upcoming long weekend. The walking street will be open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, from 5pm.

Phetchaburi to host 2-day food and art event

The Phetchaburi Creative City of Gastronomy event is a two-day cultural and culinary celebration that will feature local cuisine, food demonstrations, free food tastings, cultural performances and folk entertainment, contemporary music performances, goldsmith and other local craftsmanship demonstrations, and local product sales.

Long holiday to boost domestic tourism, hotel occupancy

The six-day holiday that starts today will generate up to 1.66 billion baht in domestic tourism from nearly 5 million trips made by Thais, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said on Thursday.

The long break starts on Friday (July 28), His Majesty the King’s birthday, and continues until Wednesday (Aug. 2), the start of Buddhist Lent. The caretaker government on Tuesday designated Monday (July 31) as an extra public holiday to give Thais more time to head back to their home towns. Continued …

PKK monkeys to Phuket? Relocation tackles rampant macaque issue in Phetchaburi and PKK

In what’s being hailed as a successful initiative, multiple crab-eating macaques have been relocated from communities within Phetchaburi to an island in Phuket, under a pilot project. The venture has cleared the road for the relocation of more from the rapidly increasing macaque population in the province, as well as the neighboring Prachuap Khiri Khan, according to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The project is part of the ministry’s efforts to mitigate the damaging effects seen on local communities due to the rapid surge in the macaque population, as advised by Yuthapol Angkinan, consultant to the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment. Continued …

A political deal involving the formation of a new government has been reached in Hong Kong between ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the leader of the Progressive Movement, ahead of Thaksin’s plan to return to Thailand, a source in the Pheu Thai Party says.

The private sector is not happy with the electricity cost of 4.45 baht per unit from September to December announced on Thursday by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), saying that positive energy-related factors should have pushed it lower.
