It’s not just Pattaya: tourists being overcharged even in Cha Am

Every time a complaint about tourism scams or inflated prices goes viral, Pattaya is usually the first name dragged into the conversation. Beach chairs, jet skis, taxis, drinks — Pattaya has long been portrayed as the poster child for tourist rip-offs. But the latest outrage coming from Cha Am tells a different story, and it is one Thailand should not ignore.

During the recent holiday period, social media lit up with angry reactions after visitors reported being charged 100 baht per beach chair, or forced into “sets” costing 500–600 baht just to sit by the sea. One widely shared post described a family of six being told that the price was high simply because it was a festival period. Even when they explained they were locals from Phetchaburi, the price barely moved. Continued …

Thailand puts on stunning fireworks show in Bangkok

Thailand ushered in the New Year with a grand fireworks show across the Chao Phraya River bend. The show, which spanned 1,400 meters in the heart of Bangkok, also included a 4D aerial performance, a fusion of drone and pyrotechnic displays, under the theme ‘In Eternity Reverance’ to honor the late-Queen Mother, Sirikit, who passed away in October. A person who drinks bottled water ingests up to 90,000 extra microplastics per year

The microplastics derived from bottles represent an invisible risk to human health, according to a recent study. The most alarming data from the analysis reveals that those who consume bottled water daily can incorporate up to 90,000 plastic particles more per year than those who drink from the tap.

The research, led by the Concordia University in Canada, reviewed more than 140 international studies to reach this conclusion. The data measured the global scope of a phenomenon that transforms the daily consumption of water into a silent threat. Continued …

Political instability taking the wind out of Thai economy sails

Since the last general election in May 2023, Thailand has been in the throes of political turbulence. Two prime ministers have served short terms in office while the third PM would have had barely four months in office. The country is now preparing for its next general election, scheduled for Feb. 8.

After serving for just about two months, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul made the decision to dissolve Parliament on Dec. 12. The move was prompted by the opposition People’s Party attempting to launch a no-confidence motion against his minority government, triggered by a conflict over constitutional amendments. Thailand tourism slips in 2025 despite domestic growth

Thailand’s tourism performance in 2025 declined, with foreign arrivals falling and total tourism revenue edging lower, even as domestic travel continued to rise, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

In a year-end summary released yesterday, the ministry said Thailand generated total tourism revenue of 2,703,335 million baht from both international and domestic visitors in 2025, down 1.26% from the previous year. Continued …

When the Thai baht rose and the golden goose disappeared

For decades, Thailand’s tourism economy thrived on a simple formula: affordable prices, strong foreign spending power, and constant turnover. Visitors arrived for a few weeks, spent freely on hotels, food, tours, bars, shops, and transport, then went home — replaced almost immediately by the next wave. Money flowed, jobs were created, and local businesses survived.

Across Pattaya and other tourist centers, the streets may still look busy. Beaches appear crowded in photos shared by tourism promoters. Arrival numbers remain high. Yet, bar owners, restaurateurs, shopkeepers, and service workers tell a very different story: fewer customers, lower spending, and thinner margins than ever before. Continued …

BBC snubs Thailand, picks Phnom Penh for 2026 travel List

In a surprising shift for Southeast Asian tourism rankings, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has excluded Thailand from its prestigious feature, “The 20 Best Places to Travel in 2026.“

Meanwhile, neighboring Cambodia has secured a spot, with its capital, Phnom Penh, praised for its modern transformation and commitment to sustainable urban culture. Continued …

The move follows a resolution of the Civil Aviation Board’s meeting on Dec. 3, which approved collecting the fee from air operators, calculated based on the number of passengers traveling into or out of the kingdom. Continued …

Renewables expansion facing fresh challenges

Caretaker Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s decision to dissolve the House adds challenges to the state push for a transition to clean energy in 2026.

BoT flags prolonged manufacturing slump as competitiveness fades

Thailand’s economy showed clearer demand-side improvement late in 2025, supported by continued growth in goods exports and tourism. However, the recovery remains uneven, as industrial production has continued to contract, reflected in broad-based declines across the manufacturing production index (MPI), amid both temporary factors and deeper structural weaknesses.

The baht’s strength and intensifying competition from imported goods remain key risks to watch in the period ahead. Chayawadee Chai-anant, assistant governor of the Corporate Relations Group and spokesperson for the Bank of Thailand (BoT), said the ongoing weakness in manufacturing had, in the near term, been driven by several temporary factors. The cabinet also instructed four key economic agencies — the Finance Ministry, the BoT, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), and the Budget Bureau — to closely monitor inflation to ensure it remains within the target range. Continued …

Koh Chang ferry traffic jams stretch 1 kilometer

The New Year Festival atmosphere in Trat province has returned to full vibrancy. Reports from the Laem Ngop Ferry Terminal yesterday indicate a surge of tourists heading to the islands, resulting in significant traffic congestion. Meanwhile, operators and tourists confirm that Koh Kood and Koh Mak remain safe destinations despite border concerns.

Both Thai and international tourists arrived in large numbers by car and motorcycle, queuing to purchase ferry tickets to Koh Chang. The influx caused a traffic tailback stretching over 1 kilometer. Despite the congestion, local business operators view this bustle as a positive economic signal for the area. Continued …

ASEAN-China trade to top US$984 billion as Chinese FDI surges in region

ASEAN has overtaken the European Union to become China’s largest trading partner since 2020, and two-way trade in 2025 is on track to exceed 2024’s record of US$984 billion, according to HSBC Global Investment Research.

In a research note by an ASEAN economist at HSBC Global Investment Research, the bank said ASEAN’s widening trade deficit with China partly reflects deeper supply-chain integration, especially in electronics and electrical machinery (E&E). Around 30% of ASEAN’s exports to China are E&E products, and roughly 30% of its imports from China come from the same sector — a dynamic that particularly benefits tech-linked economies such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Thailand wins the currency game and loses the tourist

While official arrival numbers continue to paint a picture of recovery, many foreign visitors and long-term winter residents in Pattaya say the reality on the ground tells a very different story. A persistently strong Thai baht is quietly reshaping tourist behavior, slashing spending, and raising uncomfortable questions about who Thailand’s tourism economy is really serving.

For European visitors in particular, the currency shift has been stark. Just a year ago, exchange rates hovered near 37 baht to the euro. Today, closer to 36 — and at times stronger — the difference may appear marginal on paper, but over a three- to four-month stay it translates into tens of thousands of baht lost in purchasing power. Exit the Snake, enter the Horse

As we bid farewell to 2025, and welcome 2026 – and soon, the lunar Year of the Horse – we once again highlight the winners and losers of the year gone by in Asia.

For Thailand, it was a year of continued uncertain economic times as the race to become prime minister ended, only to begin soon again. The on-again, off-again border war between Thailand and Cambodia endures, and Vietnam surpassed Thailand as the go-to destination for Chinese tourists. Continued …

2025: The year Thailand shook to its core

How much can one nation endure in a single year? In 2025, Thailand found the answer, as the pillars of faith, law, and land shattered under the weight of a perfect storm.

The ground is shaking, and we Thais know well that it isn’t just one pillar failing — it is the entire structure of our society. Looking back, the trouble began when a 7.7-magnitude earthquake, the strongest to hit the region in over a century, rocked Bangkok. Continued …

Thailand, rewritten: Where travel learns to slow down

Travel has entered a reflective era. What once promised escape now seeks alignment, asking not how far one can go, but how deeply one is willing to arrive. In this landscape, the most rewarding journeys offer fewer highlights and greater resonance, leaving travelers not overstimulated, but recalibrated.

Few destinations understand this shift as intuitively as Thailand. Long before sustainability became a global conversation, Thai life was shaped by sufficiency, seasonal rhythms, and community interdependence. What has changed today is the clarity with which these values are being shared, guided by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, inviting travelers to experience the country with greater awareness and intention. 2026 Rooftop Solar Buyer’s Guide: What Thai homeowners should look for

According to Techatat Buranaaudsawakul, chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department at the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT), rooftop solar should be treated as part of a home’s critical electrical infrastructure, not simply an add-on appliance.

“Safety is a top priority for rooftop solar,” Techatat said “A solar energy system must be designed and installed to the same safety standards as any other electrical system in the house. If homeowners focus only on cost savings without understanding safety requirements and system efficiency, they may expose their families and properties to unnecessary risks.” Continued …

‘No rush’ to install solar panels

Homeowners should not rush into installing rooftop solar panels in the hope of securing tax rebates before the government’s official program begins, according to MEA Smart Energy Solution (MEAei), a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.

The government has pledged tax reductions of up to 200,000 baht for 90,000 households that adopt solar technology. However, Poramate Pichitanont, renewable energy manager for MEAei, warned that early installations will not qualify for the incentives. Continued …

Expat Thailand 2025: Open Doors, Uneven Rules

By the end of 2025, Thailand presents a curious contradiction. The country is tightening its grip on some foreigners while quietly waving others through the door. On paper, this is about visas. In reality, it is about who is questioned and who is not. Visa runs scrutinized, Questions asked.

For many expats, the message from Thai Immigration has become unmistakable. visa runs are no longer routine. Visa exemption entries are limited typically to no more than two per calendar year. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) now allows officers to see travel history, patterns of stay, and intent at a glance. Continued …

Thailand Ranked No.1 in export diversity in the Global South

The International Institute for Trade and Development, or ITD, has highlighted findings from UNCTAD’s Trade and Development Report 2025, saying Thailand stands out as one of the most resilient economies in the Global South thanks to its exceptionally diverse export base and wide range of trading partners — an advantage it says can help cushion the impact of tariff shocks and global financial volatility.

ITD Director Suphakit Charoenkul said developing economies in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, are facing growing uncertainty from global trade policy shifts and intensifying geopolitical tensions — especially the increased use of tariffs as a form of trade restriction. Even so, he said ASEAN continues to demonstrate strength and an important role in global supply chains. Continued …

Strong baht adds pressure on condo market

A stronger baht is emerging as another major headwind for Thailand’s property sector, particularly the condominium market that relies heavily on foreign high-spending buyers, with signs some are delaying both title transfers and new deals amid exchange-rate uncertainty.

Industry assessments say the baht’s appreciation against major currencies such as the US dollar and the yuan makes Thai condominiums instantly more expensive for foreign investors — even if developers do not raise prices — reducing investment yields, especially for buyers planning to rent out units or hold them for medium- to long-term gains. Thailand’s Air Travel Booms Ahead of New Year with Increased Seats and Reduced Fares

Air travel across Thailand has surged ahead of the 2026 New Year holiday, with passenger numbers climbing steadily throughout December, prompting the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and the Ministry of Transport to expand seat capacity and lower fares to support public travel.

What will power Southeast Asia in the coming year? 5 trends to watch

Fears of a major trade slowdown in 2025 following a barrage of US tariffs turned out to be less destructive than expected, as Southeast Asia’s growth remained relatively resilient.

Inside Thailand’s return to medical-only cannabis

In June 2022, Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize marijuana. What followed was a “gold rush” of sorts, as entrepreneurs, farmers, and investors rushed to open shops, plant fields, and invest in what then seemed like a booming new industry.

Just seven months later, over 18,000 cannabis shops lined Thailand’s streets. Tourists flocked to the country for a taste of what was banned back home, while locals in rural communities cultivated cannabis alongside rice and corn. Continued …

How to See Thailand’s Wonders Without Feeling Like a Tourist

Some incorrectly assume that Thailand is synonymous with full moon–partying backpackers, over-the-top resorts, crowded beaches, and tourist-thronged temples. In reality, there’s a collective desire among Thais I’ve spoken to across the country for travelers to discover what their homeland is truly about: diverse cultures, a symphony of food, remarkable landscapes, mountainscapes and seascapes, and mind-boggling artisanship and architecture.

Smiling Albino travel company founder Dan Fraser, a Bangkok resident for 26 years, emphasizes the thrill of going off the grid in the country. “You get that high adrenaline rush feeling that you’re one of the first (travelers) to ever walk this trail or bike that route or hang out in this little curry shop in a riverside fishing village,” he says. “Thailand has that kind of opportunity in spades — it’s around every corner, even in Bangkok.” Continued …

Together, they underscore mounting pressures on ecosystems, public safety, and national values amid an increasingly volatile regional landscape. Continued …

Plastic waste is choking the planet — recycling won’t be enough

If the world continues with business as usual and fails to make urgent systemic changes, plastic pollution leaking into the environment — on land, in water, and in the air — will more than double by 2040, reaching an estimated 280 million metric tons a year. The scale is likened to dumping a truckload of plastic waste into the environment every single second, nonstop.

The economic damage caused by the plastics system is also rising to shocking levels — especially when “hidden costs” that are not reflected in material prices are included. The report estimates that health impacts from chemicals in plastics alone cost the world as much as US$1.5 trillion a year. Continued …

TAT Warns of Revenue Drop Amid Border Conflict and Flooding

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expects a significant decline in New Year holiday revenue, forecasting a 2%-9% decline compared to last year. Border tensions and severe flooding affecting southern provinces have contributed to this decrease in tourist numbers. However, a robust local currency continues to buoy outbound travel.

Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the governor of TAT, has stated that they anticipate tourism receipts to reach 70-76.5 billion baht for the New Year, a decrease from the previous year. He also expects a decline in foreign visitor numbers, with an estimated 1.4-1.5 million arrivals between Dec. 20 and Jan. 1. Recent natural disasters and border issues have led to a reduction in travel from Malaysia and other key markets. Continued …

The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects “rapid expansion” in renewable energy in Southeast Asia – and APAC more broadly – in the years ahead, driven by a surge in electricity demand, as countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia continue to increase their participation in global goods and services value chains.

One of the biggest sources of new electricity demand will come from the construction of data centers, which the accounting firm KPMG projects will see a compound annual growth rate of 13.1% between 2025 and 2030, making APAC the fastest-growing region in the world. Continued …

Why Bangkok Remains the Premier Choice for Thailand’s Retirees

For decades, the traditional Thai retirement dream was synonymous with a quiet retreat to the provinces or a seaside escape. However, as the nation enters the “Longevity Era,” a new survey by DDproperty reveals a decisive shift in strategy.

Far from seeking isolation, over a third of consumers (33%) now name Bangkok as their primary retirement destination, prioritizing structural readiness over rural tranquility. Continued …

What Worries Thailand?

The final What Worries the World survey of 2025 highlights a significant shift in the collective consciousness of the Thai public. While structural issues remain at the forefront, the year concludes with a sharp rise in environmental concern, marking the first time in 2025 that climate change has broken into the top five national worries.

This surge reflects the immediate impact of severe environmental events witnessed throughout the final quarter of the year. Most notably, the historic flooding in southern Thailand during November and December has left a profound mark on public sentiment. Described by officials as the heaviest rainfall in three centuries, the floods affected over 4 million people across provinces like Songkhla, Pattani, and Narathiwat. The devastation to infrastructure and livelihoods has transformed climate change from a theoretical future risk into a tangible, high-priority emergency for the Thai people. Continued …

Thailand Shows the West Has Already Lost Southeast Asia

It doesn’t begin with tanks. It begins with a fiber-optic cable. With a battery production facility. With a data center in Thailand’s heartland, owned by Chinese interests. While the West talks about “values,” China invests — systematically, irreversibly.

Thailand, long a neutral buffer between competing great powers, is tilting. Not loudly. Not on command. But through infrastructure, through economic logic, through cultural proximity. The country that once served as a bulwark against communism is becoming China’s gateway for trade, logistics, infrastructure, and IT security. Continued …

Pet-Friendly Gone Too Far? Thai Restaurant Defends Dogs Dining at Tables

A pet-friendly restaurant in Thailand has defended its policy after a video showing dogs dining at tables with customers sparked criticism online over hygiene concerns. The clip showed a dog eating from a plate placed on a dining table alongside people, prompting questions about cleanliness and food safety.

The restaurant, Ko-Ya, said it allows pets as part of its concept and uses separate plates and utensils exclusively for animals, which are washed separately using high-temperature dishwashers. It added that pet food is prepared to the same quality standards as food for customers. Continued …

Police corruption war airs in Nakhon Si Thammarat

The provincial police chief in Nakhon Si Thammarat was removed on Monday after a scandal erupted, linked to allegations of corruption and threats. The move by National Police Chief Kittirat Phanphet followed the online release of an audio clip, published alongside photographs of Police Major Gen. Kriangsak Noonkliang and graphic captions highlighting key claims.

The removal and rapid replacement of the newly appointed chief triggered mixed reactions within the force. Some officers expressed relief at his exit, while others supported the view that he was the victim of a coordinated effort to frame him. Continued …

Fighting continues in Sa Kaeo; Poipet military targets hit

The First Army Area command issued an update on the Thailand–Cambodia border situation today in Sa Kaeo province, marking the 17th day of countermeasures and sovereignty defense operations.

The command said operations continue across three frontline sectors along the Sa Kaeo border, where the terrain is largely open and lacks strong defensive positions or solid cover, making it vulnerable to attack. It also accused Cambodian forces of using civilian areas as military positions to launch attacks on Thai forces. Continued …

Clashes remain heavy in Si Sa Ket–Surin; rockets hit Thai civilian areas

The Second Army issued an update on the Thailand–Cambodia border situation across multiple sectors. It said clashes continued in Si Sa Ket and Surin, but Thai forces remained in control of the battlefield.

The update said Cambodian forces continued firing salvos of unguided BM-21 multiple-launch rockets into Thailand, aimed at applying pressure and creating psychological impact. Thai forces responded with coordinated fire support and drone strikes against key targets, including the opponent’s communications systems, enabling them to hold their positions. Some Thai personnel were reported injured. Continued …

Trump ready to act after ‘solving eight wars’

US President Donald Trump has claimed credit for resolving “eight wars”, adding that Thailand is “starting to shape up” amid renewed attention on Thai–Cambodian tensions.

“I’ve solved eight wars and Thailand is starting to shape up… they started with Cambodia, they started up again. But I think Marco (Secretary of State Marco Rubio), we have that in very good shape. There’s a lot of hatred between those two people,” he told US media yesterday following the special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, which focused on possible ceasefire arrangements. Analysts predict baht to hit 30 to the dollar

The baht could potentially appreciate to test 30 to the dollar in the near term amid a sharp rise in international gold prices to a new record high and broad weakness for the US dollar, say analysts.

Gold soared to a new high, approaching US$4,500 an ounce yesterday, driven by broad US dollar weakness, intensifying geopolitics amid US-Venezuela tensions, and strong buying from central banks. Continued …

Thai Authorities Launch Emergency Measures to Curb Surge in Baht

Thai financial authorities have launched a three-pronged strategy to stop the baht’s rapid appreciation, which they have identified as being primarily driven by the country’s booming online gold trade.

The emergency measures include requiring online gold platforms to submit transaction data, evaluating a new tax on online gold sales, and considering a “ceiling” on trading volumes. Continued …

Strong baht threatens to slow 2026 exports as orders soften, shippers warn

Thailand’s exports in 2026 risk growing more slowly as the strong baht, a high base, and softer orders weigh on performance, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) has warned.

Thanakorn Kasetsuwan, chairman of the TNSC, said Thailand’s export base in 2025 was unusually high — with growth seen at more than 10% — which could make it difficult for exports in 2026 to expand at a similarly strong pace. The council’s current forecast for 2026 export growth is 2%-4%. Continued …

New import duty a double-edged sword

The Customs Department’s imposition of import duties on goods valued less than 1,500 baht starting on Jan. 1 will have both positive and negative impacts for Thailand.

According to Kulthirath Pakawach-krilers, president of the Thai e-Commerce Assn., on one hand the move will benefit Thai manufacturers and domestic sellers who have been paying full import duties and value-added tax (VAT) on higher-value goods. The change enables fairer competition with foreign sellers, especially those shipping low-value items from China or other countries that previously entered duty-free. Continued …

Thai Auto Industry Pins 2026 Hopes on Exports

After a year marked by weakening exports and political uncertainty, Thailand’s auto industry expects 2026 to bring more stability, setting a production target of 1.45 million vehicles, pending clarity on trade policy and the post-election landscape.

Surapong Paisitpattanapong, an adviser to the FTI chairman and spokesperson for its Automotive Industry Club, said total vehicle production in the first 11 months of 2025 fell 1.64% from a year earlier to 1,341,714 units. Continued …

Foreign arrivals to Thailand top 31 million; Malaysians lead visitor list

Thailand has recorded more than 31 million foreign tourist arrivals so far this year, led by visitors from Malaysia, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

In its latest update covering Jan. 1–Dec. 21, the ministry said Thailand welcomed 31.76 million foreign visitors, down 7.25% year-on-year. Spending by overseas tourists generated an estimated 1.48 trillion baht in revenue. Continued …

Strong baht threatens Thailand’s tourism price competitiveness

Thailand’s tourism industry is warning that an “overstrong” baht could undermine the country’s price competitiveness from the late-2025 high season through 2026, making Thai travel and services appear more expensive to foreign visitors compared with regional rivals such as Japan and Vietnam.

Adit Chairattananont, secretary-general of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), said that if the baht strengthens beyond 30 to the US dollar, it could weigh on tourism for an extended period. He argued that Thailand already has the highest cost of living in ASEAN, and a stronger currency adds further pressure at a time when competition for international tourists is intensifying. Continued …

Why a firmer Baht may be good for Thailand’s tourism future

As Thailand enters the height of the travel season, the strengthening baht has once again become a focal point of discussion across the tourism industry. Trading recently between 31.4 and 31.8 to the US dollar, the firmer currency has raised familiar concerns: will a stronger baht deter visitors, or does it reflect a deeper shift in how Thailand is positioning itself on the global tourism stage?

At first glance, there is little evidence of a slowdown. International arrivals remain solid, flights are busy and hotels in key destinations continue to report healthy occupancy levels. Beneath the surface, however, spending patterns suggest a more complex picture. Continued …

39 million foreign tourists predicted for 2026

The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) expects 39 million foreign arrivals next year, including 9 million Chinese tourists, while announcing its readiness to help stimulate 3 billion baht via its trade show in January.

The “Thailand Tourism and Mice Next 2026” is scheduled for Jan. 23, with 1,200-1,500 participants from Thailand and overseas, and is expected to generate at least 3 billion baht in revenue. Continued …

Phasing out coal makes economic sense

Thailand’s recent update to its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) was met with polite applause from diplomatic circles and global communities. By finally aligning the national net-zero target with the mid-century goals of our neighbors, the kingdom appears to be getting back on track.

However, experienced observers of Thai energy policy know that targets are easy to set but difficult to realize. A closer look at the Energy Sector Investment Needs and Prioritization section reveals a roadmap that focuses on speculative technology over economic reality. Continued …

Why Thailand’s wellness economy is poised to lead Asia’s aging future

Thailand is entering a demographic turning point. Within a few years, almost one-third of the population will be over 60 years old. Births have fallen below deaths, and the country is on a clear path toward becoming a super-aged society. This shift carries deep consequences for fiscal sustainability, labor productivity and long-term growth.

At the same time, the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and cardiovascular conditions is placing unprecedented strain on the health system. According to the World Health Organization, NCDs already account for 74% of all deaths in Thailand — imposing both direct medical costs and large productivity losses estimated in the hundreds of billions of baht annually. Thailand Faces 40 Road Deaths Daily as Drunk Driving Persists

Thailand’s road crisis is making headlines as civil society groups highlight the grim reality of 40 fatalities daily and losses reaching 600 billion baht annually. These groups are advocating for tough measures against drunk drivers, including vehicle confiscation during the New Year 2026.

In the lead-up to the upcoming New Year festivities, civil society networks, including the Foundation Against Drunk Driving, are raising alarm over the surge in road deaths, particularly during the “seven dangerous days.” Continued …

Unsafe levels of smog cover Bangkok, 26 provinces

Ultra-fine dust reached unsafe levels in Bangkok and 26 provinces this morning, primarily in the Central Plains, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported that particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and smaller (PM2.5) ranged from 38.2 to 67.9 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) in the affected areas. The safe threshold for PM2.5 set by the Thai government is 37.5 µg/m³. Continued …

Cannabis Shops Must Become 100% Clinics Under New Thai Law

In a major shake-up, Thailand’s cannabis shops must now transform into fully-fledged clinics to continue operating. Despite existing licenses, all outlets need to reregister and must employ certified medical professionals onsite. This rule follows a new governmental decree aiming for stricter regulation to ensure cannabis is used solely for medical purposes.

Yesterday, Dr. Thewan Thaneerat, deputy director-general of the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, announced the cabinet’s approval of a draft ministerial regulation. The regulation requires cannabis shops to upgrade their operations to comply with new medicinal standards by January–February. The goal is to elevate over 10,000 licensed cannabis shops into medical facilities or clinics that meet the Ministry of Public Health’s approval. Continued …

Bullion climbed past US$4,465 an ounce for the first time, extending a sharp move that followed a 2.4% jump in the previous session, its strongest one-day gain in more than a month.

Traders have increasingly priced in another round of Federal Reserve easing next year, a backdrop that typically supports non-yielding assets such as precious metals. Continued …

Residents of a condominium in Nonthaburi province staged a protest after the building’s former juristic person manager took over a shared rooftop area to breed dogs for sale, with nearly 100 Thai Ridgeback dogs reportedly kept at the property.

According to residents, the rooftop was originally designed as a common area where occupants could enjoy a 360-degree view of Nonthaburi, nearby provinces, and the Chao Phraya River. Continued …

Thailand and Cambodia will resume bilateral talks later this week aimed at securing a more durable ceasefire along their shared border following deadly clashes that have killed dozens and displaced hundreds of thousands.

8 injured in Cambodia rocket strike on Sa Kaeo civilian area

The Royal Thai Army has condemned Cambodia for firing BM-21 multiple rocket launchers into a civilian area in Sa Kaeo province, injuring eight people and damaging several homes.

Major Gen. Winthai Suvaree said that at about 4 pm yesterday, Cambodian forces fired BM-21 rockets into Ban Nong Samet in Khok Sung district, Sa Kaeo — an area of Thai civilian homes and community buildings, not a military zone. Continued …

Thailand to tax under-1,500-baht imported goods

The Thai Customs Department has announced a landmark policy shift that will see all imported goods taxed from the first baht, effectively ending the long-standing tax exemption for items valued under 1,500 baht. The new regulations are set to come into force on Jan. 1.

The move is designed to provide a fairer environment for domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which have struggled to compete with a flood of low-cost, tax-free imports from abroad. Continued …

Customs Targets Online Sales

The Thai Customs Department is clamping down on the sale of non-certified products through online platforms. In a bid to tackle the flow of illegal or substandard goods, the department has signed agreements with online sales platforms.

The primary focus is on goods lacking standard certifications from bodies like the Thai Industrial Standards Institute and the Food and Drug Administration. The effort also targets prohibited items such as e-cigarettes. Continued …

National Housing Authority Unveils Eight-Point Roadmap for 2026

The National Housing Authority (NHA) has announced an ambitious strategic plan for 2026, centering on eight “urgent missions” designed to bridge the housing gap for all segments of Thai society. The “Housing for All” initiative aims to deliver more than 13,000 new units through a variety of purchase, hire-purchase, and rental schemes.

According to the NHA, the 2026 roadmap is built upon the dual principles of universal design (UD) — ensuring accessibility for the elderly and disabled — and eco-friendly development, following “eco-village” standards. Continued …

Thailand Broadens FTA Network to 17 Agreements, Anticipates More Deals

Thailand’s Department of Trade Negotiations announced the successful conclusion and signing of three new free trade agreements (FTAs) this year, raising the total to 17 agreements with 24 trading partners. The newly established FTAs with Sri Lanka, the European Free Trade Assn. (EFTA), and Bhutan are set to take effect in 2026.

Thailand is expediting negotiations on several key FTAs, including those with the European Union, South Korea, the ASEAN–Canada FTA, upgrades to the ASEAN–India Trade in Goods Agreement, and the Thailand–Peru FTA. Continued …

Car exports decline 12%

Thailand’s car exports dropped 12% year-on-year between January and November to 78,692 units, as internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles lost ground in overseas markets amid growing competition, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Surapong Paisitpatanapong, FTI vice chairman and spokesman for the federation’s Automotive Industry Club, said the decline stemmed from global automakers phasing out ICE models in favor of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), new carbon emission taxes on oil-fuelled cars in some countries, and the economic slowdown among Thailand’s trade partners. Continued …

Thailand construction sector at a critical juncture

The Thai construction industry stands at a critical juncture, grappling with persistent challenges that threaten its long-term viability. A recent analysis by the Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) highlights a sector besieged by low labor productivity, escalating costs, liquidity concerns, and the growing imperative to align with global sustainability trends. However, the report also offers a clear path forward: embracing technology and fostering international partnerships.

For years, productivity in the Thai construction workforce has lagged behind other industries, showing only a modest 2.7% CAGR over the past decade, significantly lower than sectors like hospitality and food services. This structural issue, coupled with business constraints such as limited new project acquisitions and rising operational costs, has created a precarious financial landscape for many contractors. Thai Hotels Group Sees Foreign Arrivals at About 33 Million in 2026

Thailand’s hotel industry expects the number of foreign visitors to hold steady at around 33 million in 2026, despite economic uncertainty, weather disruptions, and regional tensions, the Thai Hotels Assn. said.

Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, president of the association, said hotel revenues grew in the fourth quarter of 2025 compared with the previous quarter, driven by an increase in long-haul travelers and government domestic tourism stimulus programs. Those measures, including the government-subsidized domestic tourism scheme and the government travel tax refund program, helped support revenues, particularly at four-star hotels and above. Thailand eyes Chinese tourism market

As political tensions continue to divert Chinese tourists from Japan to other countries, Thai tourism operators are urging authorities to take a more aggressive approach in attracting this market, reinforcing safety perceptions to compete with other Asia-Pacific nations targeting tourists from the mainland.

Chinese tourists have canceled hundreds of thousands of trips to Japan since November, after China issued warnings to its citizens over a diplomatic spat concerning Taiwan. The dispute follows Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stating a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo. Continued …

Why ‘Hands-Free Travel’ Is Becoming a Key Trend for Visitors to Thailand

As the New Year holiday season approaches, Thailand tourism continues to attract a growing number of international travelers seeking leisure, culture, and convenience. Alongside the continued momentum of tourism, however, one familiar challenge remains unchanged: crowded airports, tight schedules, and the growing complexity of managing luggage throughout increasingly dynamic journeys.

Recent travel behavior points to a clear shift in priorities, as highlighted in global travel trend reports by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Modern travelers are placing greater value on the quality and ease of the travel experience itself. As a result, “hands-free travel” — defined as traveling without the need to physically manage luggage — is emerging as a key travel trend for 2026, particularly during peak periods such as the New Year holiday season. Spending New Year’s Eve In Thailand? Top Countdown Destinations For 2026

There is no one-size-fits-all way to celebrate New Year’s Eve, particularly in Thailand. Some people are drawn to late nights spent moving between fireworks displays and open-bar parties, gravitating toward large, high-energy gatherings where crowds come together for the countdown. New Year’s Eve, after all, has a reputation as the ultimate amateur night.

Others actively avoid the crush, preferring quiet walks through uncrowded outdoor spaces or trips to lesser-known destinations, where the turn of the year is marked with smaller, more intimate celebrations away from the big cities. Continued …

Thai EV Production Skyrockets by 1,974% as Offset Deadlines Loom

Thailand rewrites SEA Games history with record-breaking gold rush

As the SEA Games conclude today, Thailand is set to put the icing on its success in reclaiming the overall title with a new record total of gold medals after their athletes continued to win one title after another on the penultimate day of the 33rd SEA Games on Friday.

The Kingdom already shattered the previous best overall haul of 205 gold medals set by Vietnam when it hosted the Covid-delayed Games three years ago after another profitable day for Thai athletes propeled the country to a tally of 232 titles. Continued …

Travel conditions across southern Thailand have largely returned to normal following recent flooding, with steady improvements reported in all affected provinces, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Temples, tanks, and landmines: Thailand and Cambodia’s deadliest border year

This year witnessed renewed border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia that sparked deadly armed clashes in July and December, opening fresh wounds in a centuries-old dispute. Relations have deteriorated so badly that a return to normality appears unlikely anytime soon.

This year’s two rounds of border fighting were described as the deadliest since the 15th century, when the Ayutthaya kingdom ousted the Khmer Empire as the region’s dominant power. Continued …

Two Weeks of Needless Thai-Cambodian War or War for Votes

Two weeks of needless Thai-Cambodian border war with no end in sight is depressing, particularly when very few Thais — especially public figures or semi-public figures — are willing to publicly call for an end to this tragic madness.

The war is so “popular” among ultranationalist Thais to the point where one risks being accused of being pro-Cambodia, or even being Cambodian or a spy for Cambodia, for calling for an end to the war. Continued …

Thai Army Reports Heavy Border Clashes Over Past 24 hours

The Thai Army’s Second Army Region reported intense fighting along the Thai–Cambodian border over a 24-hour period, marked by heavy weapons fire and drone strikes, with no confirmed Thai casualties.

The update summarized security conditions yesterday, highlighting sustained exchanges of artillery, mortars, and drones in several frontier areas. The military said the clashes affected multiple provinces in the lower northeastern region, prompting heightened security measures. Continued …

F-16s Again Bomb Cambodian Positions Amid Border Clashes

Thai fighter jets carried out air strikes against Cambodian military positions early today, intensifying clashes along the Thai–Cambodian border and prompting evacuations in nearby communities.

The Royal Thai Air Force deployed F-16 aircraft to drop four bombs on targets in the Ta Phraya–Bueng Takuan area, as fighting on the ground escalated with heavy artillery exchanges. Residents near the frontier were forced to flee to shelters as the violence spread across several locations. Continued …

ASEAN meets in Kuala Lumpur as Thailand sets three ceasefire terms

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow arrived in Kuala Lumpur yesterdayto attend a special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting today convened by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in his capacity as ASEAN chair.

Sihasak travelled with Nikorndej Plangoon, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as regional diplomats gather to discuss the Thailand–Cambodia situation amid international attention over whether the talks could help pave the way for a ceasefire. Continued …

Hun Sen’s war is his last gasp

Hun Sen, the patriarch of Cambodian politics and Senate president, has seemingly dusted off an old playbook: the “externalixation of internal problems.” By instigating a series of sharp and unprovoked armed attacks against Thailand, the regime is attempting to wrap itself in the national flag to obscure a far more dangerous reality – the rot consuming Cambodia from within.

For decades, the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has traded on stability and control. But as 2025 closes, that narrative is fracturing. The recent, intense skirmishes – involving airstrikes and evacuations of hundred thousands – are conveniently timed. They distract a restless population from a cratering economy and, more critically, from the deluge of exposés revealing the grotesque, unfounded wealth of the Hun family empire. Continued …

Nearly Half a Million Cambodian Migrant Workers in Thailand Face Uncertain Future

As the border war between Thailand and Cambodia enters its second week today, and thevcrackdown specifically targeting unregistered migrant workers from Cambodia is on the rise, Thai-based Cambodian labor right activist Saing Ry reported about how she and the more than 400,000 migrant workers are coping and their future.

QUESTION: What is the overall current situation of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand like? Do they feel afraid or unsafe?

Saing Ry: I feel confused, anxious, scared, and unable to think clearly about which path to take, because the (Thai) prime minister has announced an indefinite postponement of the registration and renewal process for Cambodian migrant workers. Many workers’ permits will expire, and there is still no clear solution. Continued …

Thailand, the sick man of Southeast Asia?

Thailand is confronting a convergence of economic and political pressures that threaten to lock in prolonged stagnation caused by weak growth, demographic decline, and low productivity. Decades of political instability, repeated intervention by unelected ‘tutelary’ powers and the blocking of reformist forces have undermined policy continuity, discouraged investment and diverted spending away from long-term growth drivers like education and public investment.

Renewed border tensions with Cambodia and looming elections now compound these structural weaknesses, leaving Thailand trapped in a cycle of political uncertainty and economic underperformance that erodes its regional standing. Continued …

Big C shuts 170 Big C Mini outlets as growth falters

BJC Big C, the consumer goods and retail arm of Berli Jucker Plc (BJC), is still grappling with growth challenges as Thailand’s economy expands only slowly.

Over the first nine months of 2025, performance across BJC’s business groups was mixed. In the third quarter, its key pillars — packaging manufacturing, healthcare, and technical supplies and services, and retail — all contracted, driven by multiple factors. Continued …

US trade talks still on course

Trade talks between Thailand and the US remain on track even as Thailand operates under a caretaker government. According to Chotima Iemsawasdikul, director-general of the Department of Trade Negotiations, Thailand is continuing technical negotiations with the US regarding the tariffs, which she reaffirmed remain at 19%.

“The issues in the technical negotiations are similar to those in trade liberalization talks, covering market access for goods and services, as well as investment,” Chotima said. “The US raised issues cited in its ‘National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers’, particularly non-tariff measures, which the US views as affecting trade and its economic security.” Continued …

Any US trade deal must wait for new parliament and cabinet

A top official at the Ministry of Commerce on Friday warned that the United States could raise tariffs if peace is not quickly restored between Thailand and Cambodia, while the director-general of the Department of International Trade Negotiations confirmed that technical talks with the U.S. Trade Representatives’ office are ongoing.

As things stand, Thailand cannot sign any trade deal until a new government is formed, likely in May 2026, because the caretaker government is barred from making binding commitments, and any agreement will also require approval from the House of Representatives, dissolved by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Dec. 12. Deloitte forecasts 3% growth under stable government

Thailand can accelerate economic growth to nearly 3% if it secures a stable post-election government and implements targeted investment policies, says Deloitte Thailand, while reaffirming the nation’s strong potential to emerge as a regional data center hub.

Metinee Jongsaliswang, country managing director at Deloitte Thailand, said the firm projects economic growth in 2026 at around 2% under its base-case scenario, factoring in multiple uncertainties beyond the country’s control. Continued …

Thai brands eye China’s booming premium health and beauty market

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), citing information from the Thai Trade Center in Kunming, China, reports that China’s premium health and beauty market is continuing to grow, particularly in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. Consumers in these top-tier markets increasingly prioritize high-quality products, modern design, and brands that reflect their individual lifestyles.

Recent indicators suggest that premium consumption in China remains a meaningful economic opportunity for Thai entrepreneurs and international businesses, even as the broader economy faces headwinds. Continued …

Chinese automaker ramps up Thai EV production

Omoda & Jaecoo (Thailand), a subsidiary of Chinese state-owned automaker Chery Automobile, has announced plans to produce 28,000-30,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) locally in 2026, as demand for electric mobility continues to rise among Thai consumers.

Company President Cedric Cui said 85%-90% of production will serve the domestic market under the government’s EV incentive schemes, while 10%-15% will be exported to Australia, Europe, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Continued …

Why a Firmer Baht May Be Good for Thailand’s Tourism Future

Thailand’s strengthening baht is back in the spotlight as the peak travel season gathers pace. Trading in the range of 31.4–31.8 baht to the US dollar, the currency has firmed in recent weeks, prompting renewed debate across the tourism sector.

Does a stronger baht discourage visitors, or does it signal a more fundamental shift in how Thailand positions itself globally? On the surface, the answer appears to be no. Arrival numbers remain healthy, flights are full and hotels in major destinations continue to report strong occupancy. Yet spending patterns tell a more nuanced story. Continued …

From tourists to residents, Thailand is quietly changing

Thailand has always been good at attracting people. For decades, visitors have come for the obvious reasons: climate, affordability, food, and a lifestyle that feels lighter than the one they left behind.

What is different now is not the attraction itself, but who is staying and for how long. In 2025, Thailand recorded just over 30 million foreign arrivals, generating an estimated 1.4 trillion baht in tourism revenue. These figures are often quoted, usually to demonstrate recovery or growth. They matter but they do not tell the whole story. A quieter change is taking place beneath the headline numbers. Pattaya and the incident that never existed

There is a story one of the lawyers in our office likes to recount. It always brings a knowing smile – not because it is humorous, but because it captures something deeply and unmistakably Thai.

An Indian man had arranged to purchase sexual services from a person he believed to be a woman in Pattaya. The terms were agreed upon: a price, a place, and a mutual understanding. The encounter took place as arranged. Trouble began afterward, when the man refused to pay. His explanation was blunt: “You are transgender, not a real woman. I paid for a real woman.” Continued …

Chinese Vs Thai Fried Rice: What’s The Difference?

We dare foodies to name a more versatile comfort food than fried rice. When epicures are yearning for a taste of something warming, nourishing, and easy on the stomach, chances are, they’re picking up the phone or taking a walk down the block to secure the bag (it’s also wicked easy to whip up a killer batch of fried rice at home, for the record).

Maybe folks are headed toward the plexiglass window of their go-to local Chinese restaurant, beaming softly like an everyman’s “Nighthawks.” Or maybe they’re headed to their local Thai joint and unfolding a paper takeout menu. For foodies hungry for a taste of the truth, what’s the actual difference between Chinese and Thai-style fried rice? Continued …

2026 may bring Thailand’s new era of extreme weather

Tara Buakamsri, director of the Climate Connectors program, says Thailand is entering a period of rapidly shifting climate conditions — and that global heating is no longer just an environmental issue, but the backdrop shaping economic security, public health, energy stability, and people’s quality of life.

Thai politics, he argues, can no longer respond with slogans or by brushing aside scientific evidence. Tara cited the latest outlook from the UK Met Office, which forecasts that average global temperatures in 2026 are likely to be more than 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels (1850–1900). Continued …

Thai importers face EU carbon restrictions

Thailand’s exports to Europe face fresh pressure from the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which enters its definitive phase on Jan. 1.

The EU has also rolled out Regulation (EU) 2025/2083, described as a CBAM “simplification” package, aimed at reducing complexity and easing the burden on small importers ahead of full implementation. Continued …

Mekong arsenic levels deemed safe

Recent water quality tests have confirmed the Mekong River is safe, with arsenic levels within acceptable limits, according to a senior local environmental official.

Tests of samples collected between Nov. 12 and 17 in Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, and Nakhon Phanom found arsenic levels below 0.010 milligrams per liter (mg/L) at monitoring stations, said Saichon Laophakdee, director for environment at the provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment.
