Tourist Van Collides with Palm Oil Truck in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Injuring Several

Yesterday, the Sam Roi Yot Police Station received a report of a collision involving a tourist van and a palm oil truck. The incident occurred on the northbound side of Phetkasem Road at kilometer marker 253+600 in Ban Nong Khang, Moo 9, Sila Loi subdistrict, Sam Roi Yot district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

The collision left several foreign tourists injured and caused significant traffic congestion in the area. Emergency response teams from the Methee Thammasathan Sam Roi Yot Rescue Foundation and highway rescue volunteers were dispatched to the scene. Continued …

Regional action on PM2.5 pollution proposed

Thailand and its neighboring countries must work together to address the problem of PM2.5 haze pollution, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said yesterday. He said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was very concerned about the issue and has pledged measures to tackle it.

Farmers continued burning their fields amid worsening air pollution in Thailand. Footage shows walls of thick smoke drifting over burning farmlands in Nakhon Ratchasima province, sending levels of deadly PM 2.5 particles soaring to more than 20 times the safe limit.

Firefighters battled to extinguish the flames that rapidly spread across 40 acres of land due to strong winds. The Environmental and Pollution Control Office 11 reported that the seasonal agricultural burning – when farmers burn crops to cheaply clear their lands – was causing air quality to drop across northeast Thailand. PM2.5 pollution can cost Bangkok up to 6 billion baht

PM2.5 air pollution could cause an economic impact of 3 to 6 billion baht in Bangkok and surrounding areas if it persists for a month, the Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) said yesterday. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, with prolonged exposure linked to chronic health issues such as lung and heart disease.

Kevalin Wangpichayasuk, KResearch’s deputy managing director, noted that the pollution has economic repercussions across various factors, including healthcare costs and tourism. Continued …

Bangkok ranked 4th among most polluted cities worldwide

Bangkok today was ranked as the fourth worst city in the world for air quality, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir, as toxic haze continues to affect the capital and other provinces in the country. The air quality index in Bangkok reached 188 as of 9.40am.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) declared 48 of its 50 districts as red (hazardous-to-health) zones, with particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) levels averaging 88.4 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³). Continued …

Legal amendment on adultery in Thailand enforceable from Jan 22

An adultery law, under which a married person can sue for divorce from their spouse and demand compensation from them if they are found to have had sexual intercourse with a third party, came into force on Jan. 22.

The law is an amendment to Section 1523 of the Civil and Commercial Code, in line with § 27 (1) and § 27 (2) of the Thai Constitution, and ruling 13/2567 by the Constitutional Court. – ThaiPBS

Authorities warn of bird flu risks

Health authorities have warned people to take precautions while visiting livestock farms and not to drink raw milk to prevent them from contracting H5N1 avian influenza, now being found in mammals.

People who visit livestock farms must protect themselves from infection because there have been cases in many countries worldwide of bird flu in mammals such as dairy cows, pigs and even tigers, said Dr. Jurai Wongsawat, spokeswoman for the Department of Disease Control. Continued …

Runaway elephant sparks chaos in Phuket

Panic swept through Cherng Talay in Phuket yesterday as an escaped elephant roamed the village streets, prompting an urgent response from police and handlers. The drama began at around 10am when the elephant bolted from its camp, heading toward Cherng Talay Wittayakom School, with a scaffolding pole tangled around its neck.

Residents of a South Pattaya condominium were left stunned and terrified when a massive 4-meter-long python was discovered hiding within the building.

An explosion yesterday morning at a meditation pavilion in the Chulabhorn Pattana 5 Village, Rangae District, Narathiwat, left seven soldiers from the 45th Ranger Task Force injured. The attack, believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), has prompted heightened security measures in the area.

5,400 US Navy troops to disembark in Pattaya next week

Chonburi authorities are preparing for the arrival of 5,400 U.S. Navy personnel who will stay in Pattaya from Jan. 27-31 on furlough from a military training exercise. The troops will arrive on four U.S. Navy ships, which will dock in areas overseen by Sattahip and Laem Chabang police stations.

Thailand Celebrates First Day of Marriage Equality

Thailand marked a historic milestone as 1,832 same-sex couples registered their marriages nationwide yesterday, the first day of the Marriage Equality Act implementation. According to Naruemit Pride Co., organizers of Bangkok Pride, the registrations included 616 male couples, 1,216 female couples, and 960 male-female couples. Bangkok alone recorded 654 registrations across its districts.

At Siam Paragon’s Marriage Equality Day celebration, 185 couples registered their marriages. The event attracted LGBTQ+ couples, Thai celebrities, and diplomatic representatives, including officials from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, representing Taiwan, Asia’s first territory to legalize marriage equality. New Airline Regulations: Six Cases Where Passengers May Be Denied Boarding

Thailand launches green tariff

Thailand has started imposing the utility green tariff (UGT) for the first time, requiring companies to pay 4.21 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit) if they opt to use renewable power.

Toxic air crisis: Dust levels ‘red’ in most of Thailand

Ultrafine dust levels were in the red (hazardous-to-health) in 46 out of the 76 provinces and in greater Bangkok this morning, with only 10 provinces reporting moderate to good air quality.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTFA) reported at 8am that particulate matter 2.5 micrometrs and less in diameter (PM2.5) was at red levels in 46 provinces and at orange (starting to affect health) levels in 21 provinces. The Ministry of Public Health is set to recommend a nationwide work from home directive next week after PM2.5 ultrafine dust pollution surpassed safe thresholds in nearly every province yesterday, with greater Bangkok experiencing the highest levels.

PM2.5 impacted 1 million Thais, cost Bt3 billion last year: Health Ministry

Over 1 million people have been treated for health conditions linked to PM2.5 air pollution in the past fiscal year (October 2023-December 2024), costing the country around 3 billion baht in healthcare expenses, the Public Health Ministry reported on Monday.

A total of 1,048,015 people sought treatment for six PM2.5-related conditions over the 12 months, ranked as follows: Dermatitis (442,073 patients), conjunctivitis (357,104), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (226,423), asthma (18,336), acute coronary syndrome (4,051), and diseases from direct contact with air pollution (28). How China outdoes Thailand in PM2.5 dust war

Sonthi Kotchawat, an environmental and health expert with the Thai Environmental Scholars Assn., posted online: “China declares victory in the PM2.5 dust war with the ‘Blue Skies by 2025’ policy. How did they do it? Meanwhile, Thailand remains at the same point.

Baht projected to strengthen

The baht is likely to strengthen further after it appreciated beyond 34 to the dollar yesterday, as Donald Trump’s inauguration speech disappointed investors, prompting heavy selling of the dollar for profit-taking, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

Cambodian police free US man who was kidnapped in Thailand, smuggled across border

Cambodian authorities successfully rescued a man who was kidnapped in Thailand, drugged, and transported to Cambodia, where he was held captive. At the same time, his captors attempted to extort a ransom from his family.

According to the National Police, the victim, identified as Yu Emil, is an American citizen of Taiwanese descent. The rescue operation was conducted on Jan. 15, a day after the victim’s family reported the incident through the Ministry of Interior. Continued …

Ministry eyes GDP gain of greater than 3%

Thai cabinet approves carbon tax

The cabinet yesterday agreed to levy a carbon tax of 200 baht per ton of carbon emissions as part of the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul. The tax, however, will be included in the existing oil tax and will not affect the retail price of oil and oil products, Paopoom said.

Expats in Thailand warned of scams targeting bank accounts

A chief of police issued a warning to retirees in Thailand after two British expats in Pattaya were targetted by scammers attempting to drain their bank accounts. Police Lt. Col. Saksit Choobunrueang yesterday, announced that the elderly are being targetted by scam gangs because of their limited knowledge of technology.

The retirees, both residents of Thailand, received separate phone calls from the fraudsters claiming they might not need to register for a TIN (tax identification number), provided some routine checks confirmed their exemption. Continued …

Upper Thailand to get colder, heavy rain forecast for south

Another strong high-pressure system from China will extend to Thailand and the South China Sea from Friday to Monday, causing a decrease in temperature and strong winds in the area, the Thai Meteorological Department said in a weather warning today.

Expat tax returns due by March 31

Editor: We posted this news Saturday but several of our readers reported that the online site is in Thai only. We checked and translation is available in English, and in other languages if you use most any major Google or Microsoft platform – by right-clicking on the site. However, we found navigating the site dificult and could not find where to even start a filing.

There is also the question of how the dozens of dual tax treaties will be handled online – 95% of expats residing in Thailand reportedly come from countries with dual tax treaties with Thailand. Each one of those treaties is different. (information provided by Thai Examiner)

Highlights:
  • All income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year is declarable;
  • all expats who have been residents of Thailand for 180 days or more in the course of the last year are liable to file a return;
  • taxpayers should use the D-MyTax (Digital MyTax) system;
  • the income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin;
  • for most foreign expats on basic incomes such as Bt60,000 a month, the tax bill is approximately Bt11,000;
  • only electronic forms will be accepted until April 8, 2025; paper returns must be received by the end of March;
  • the return pertains to taxable income earned within Thailand and remitted to Thailand during 2024;
  • 95% of foreign expats originate from countries that have tax treaties with Thailand,
  • each country’s treaty with the kingdom is substantially different;
  • each individual residing in Thailand has unique circumstances, complicating the matter, particularly with the differences in tax treaties;
  • it is unclear how each individual’s situation will be treated;
  • the Thai government is reportedly drafting legislation to increase the tax burden on foreign residents, meaning that foreign residents in the kingdom will eventually be liable to pay tax on their worldwide income;
  • an independent survey showed that 16% of people plan to take professional advice, while a full 58% would not file a return at all;
  • 55% of expats in the survey are considering relocating to avoid spending 180 days in the country.

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

Changes to tax regulations in 2023 make The income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin. Tiger spotted in Kui Buri after a decade

The festive period has turned deadly for many, with a toll of 393 fatalities and 2,251 injuries reported over the past nine days of New Year travel. Authorities have attributed the alarming figures to reckless driving, with speeding identified as the primary cause of crashes.

Expat tax returns due by March 31

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

Changes to tax regulations in 2023 make all income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year declarable. The income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin. The question now is how many foreign taxpayers will file returns between now and March 31. After that, it remains to be seen if follow-up actions will be taken against those who fail to do so. A coach crash late last night on Route 41 in Surat Thani province has left five dead and dozens injured. The incident occurred near the Pa We intersection in Chaiya district, where the coach rolled onto its side and crashed into a tree.

Crackdown on Drink Driving

As the New Year celebrations are underway, courts in Thailand have taken a firm stance on driving offenses. On Dec. 30, the fourth day of the “10 Dangerous Days” campaign, 2,032 cases were sent to probation processes.

54% tariff on wine imports eliminated ‘indefinitely’

Thailand is cutting alcohol taxes and tariffs in a bid to lower the cost of a night out and attract more tourists. A 54% tariff on wine imports will be “exempted indefinitely”, according to local media accounts of a Thai cabinet meeting, while excise duties on locally produced wine will be cut to 10% or below.

The measure is designed not only to expand the budding domestic industry, but also to add to supplies of less-expensive alcohol. The government had in recent years increased tariffs on wine in a bid to raise revenues. Wild Elephant Herd Threatens Crops in Nakhon Ratchasima

2024’s elephant tragedy sparks soul-searching on safety of national icon

Tall, strong and excellent swimmers, it’s hard to imagine that elephants – Thailand’s national emblem – could succumb to floodwaters. So, when news emerged that two elephants had drowned in floods that struck Chiang Mai in October, shock and dismay rippled through Thai society.

On Oct. 5, two elephants were found dead in the Mae Taeng River, six kilometers from their home at the Elephant Nature Park in the northern capital. Park staff identified the drowned creatures as 16-year-old Fah Sai and 40-year-old Ploy Thong. The latter was blind. Continued …

15% multinational corporate tax begins Jan 1

The Royal Gazette website yesterday published a royal decree for the top-up tax on multinational corporations operating in Thailand, to come into effect on Jan. 1. The top-up tax is a mechanism designed to ensure that multinational corporations pay a minimum level of corporate income tax, typically aligned with the global minimum tax (GMT) initiative led by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

If a multinational corporation pays corporate income tax at a rate below 15%, it will need to pay the difference (to reach 15%) in the country where its parent company is headquartered. Thailand’s imposition of top-up tax will allow corporations to pay the difference in the kingdom instead. Continued …

GDP growth under pressure amid threat of US tariff hikes

Thai GDP might expand at a slower pace in 2025 than the projected growth of 2.6% this year, as the policies of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump could put pressure on exports, which have rebounded significantly to become a major growth driver of the economy.

While most forecasters predict economic growth will rise in 2025, Kasikorn Securities anticipates that the country’s GDP growth might fall to 2.4% because of emerging risks from policy uncertainties in the U.S., its trade war with China, and more intense competition from Chinese goods shipped to other markets. Hotels in Chonburi, Phuket unfazed by wage increase

The Thai Hotels Assn. (THA) said raising the daily minimum wage rate for unskilled workers next year will not affect hotels in Chonburi and Phuket because most already pay more than usual.
