The Kite and Art Festival Prachuap Khiri Khan will take place at Saran Withi Pier today and tomorrow, bringing two evenings of kite displays, art, and family-friendly activities to the seafront.

What global shifts mean for expats in Thailand

Ren Lexander, PhD, gave a timely talk, “Taking Stock in Uncertain Times: What Global Shifts Mean for Us in Thailand,” at a meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club. He invited his audience to “take stock” of the rapidly changing global situation. Although the current Middle East conflict is less than two months old, its ripple effects are already being felt worldwide.

The speaker emphasized that in an increasingly interconnected world, shocks travel faster and hit harder — a reality seen in both the 2008 financial crisis and today’s geopolitical tensions. Rainy season officially begins today

Thailand will officially enter the rainy season today, but with less rain than usual in the forecast, the Meteorological Department announced yesterday.

The season’s official start is dependent on three conditions: continuing rain over 60% or more of upper Thailand, lower-level winds shifting to southwesterly, and upper-altitude winds turning to easterly, Director-general Sukanyanee Yawinchan said. Continued … 

Ride-hailing apps given one month to improve safety standards

Thailand’s Transport Ministry has given ride-hailing platforms one month to improve passenger safety measures or risk license suspension, as new rules are prepared for app-based taxi services. The planned measures include requiring drivers to hold public driving licenxes, installing CCTV cameras in vehicles, and providing passenger insurance coverage.

Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat said the measures are aimed at improving standards for ride-hailing services operating through mobile applications. The announcement comes as ride-hailing platform Bolt seeks renewal of its operating license. Continued … 

Scientists dig up Southeast Asia’s largest dinosaur in Thailand

Along a meandering river in a warm and arid region that is now Thailand roughly 113 million years ago, a plant-eating behemoth almost 27 ‌meters long browsed on the treetops without much fear of predators due to its sheer size. This was Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis, the largest-known dinosaur from Southeast Asia.

Researchers have unearthed skeletal remains of Nagatitan, a member of the dinosaur lineage called sauropods known for having a long neck, long tail, small head, and four columnar legs. Continued … 

Anutin calls corrupt Phuket officials ‘disgusting’ after beach encroachment

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul criticized corrupt officials in Phuket for facilitating land encroachment at Freedom Beach, describing the actions as “disgusting”. The Freedom Beach encroachment case gained national attention after People’s Party MP Chaloempong “Sam” Saengdee claimed he received death threats while investigating illegal occupation on Freedom Beach and surrounding land under the Khao Nak Kerd National Forest in Kathu district.

According to Chaloempong, parts of the protected forest had been converted into a luxury resort development. Visitors were reportedly charged an entry fee of 300 baht to access the beach despite it being public land. Baht Likely to Decline Further Amid Escalating Mideast Tensions

The Thai baht is projected to depreciate further, potentially reaching 33.50 per US dollar this week. This forecast follows a recent testing of a nine-month low at 33.04 on Monday. The primary driver for this expected weakening is the heightened uncertainty stemming from the conflict in the Middle East, which is bolstering the US dollar as a safe-haven asset.

Investors are increasingly revising their expectations, now anticipating that the US Federal Reserve will refrain from further policy rate cuts this year, consequently leading to rising US bond yields. Thai businesses warn corruption crisis is worsening

Thailand’s private sector has warned that corruption remains a structural crisis undermining the business environment, after a new survey found nearly nine in 10 businesses see graft as an obstacle and, for the first time, identified state agencies with the highest alleged bribery risks.

The survey was released by the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking, or JSCCIB, through its Zero Corruption working group and Puean Mai Thon. It covered 401 business executives and representatives nationwide between March 26 and April 10. Continued … 

Koh Phangan nominee crackdown shows 68% of firms with foreign ownership links

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul arrived on Koh Phangan on Wednesday as hundreds of police, DSI investigators and land officials launched one of Thailand’s biggest crackdowns on suspected illegal foreign business networks, raiding companies and land plots amid allegations of nominee ownership, hidden foreign control and proxy shareholders across the island’s tourism economy.

The operation came as authorities revealed that nearly 68% of registered businesses on Koh Phangan and Koh Samui involve foreign investment. Meanwhile, investigators widened their probes into high-value firms, suspicious land holdings, and concealed ownership structures linked to Israeli, French, British, and Russian investors. Geoeconomics of Thai ‘land bridge’

After nearly two decades of ups and downs, Thailand’s “land bridge” idea has regained attention amid the ongoing military standoff between the United States and Iran over threats to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.

Thailand confirms end to 60-day visa-free stays

Thailand’s visa-free entry for nationals of 93 countries is set to be cut from 60 days to 30 days after government officials confirmed plans to end the policy introduced in July 2024. The proposal, confirmed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Foreign Ministry, is expected to go to Cabinet next week, and an official start date will be announced after approval.

The 60-day exemption was launched to support Thailand’s post-pandemic economic recovery. It applied to travelers from 93 countries, but officials said the scheme has been misused by some foreigners for illegal work, overstays, and criminal activity. Continued … 

THAI to add Europe flights despite jet fuel concerns

Flag carrier Thai Airways International (THAI) plans to add European flights, yet still maintain proactive fuel cost and route network management amid short-term concerns about spillover impacts from the war in the Middle East and geopolitical tensions.

Solar rooftop panels to be inspected due to fire hazard risk

The government has ordered the Office of the Consumer Protection Board to urgently investigate unsafe solar rooftop installations linked to fire risks and consumer losses exceeding 500,000 baht, following complaints about substandard equipment and improper electrical work.

‘No swimming’ red flags out in Hua Hin

Hua Hin authorities have banned swimming along the main beach after red flags were raised today following warnings of strong winds and rough seas in the Gulf of Thailand.

According to the Meteorological Department’s forecast for Nov. 17-23, the Gulf is experiencing waves of 2–3 meters as the northeast monsoon strengthens and an easterly wind surge moves across the south. The system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of the southern provinces and hazardous sea conditions throughout the week. Continued …

Supreme Court Orders Thaksin to Pay 17.6-Billion-Baht Tax Bill

The Supreme Court has ordered Thaksin Shinawatra to pay 17.6 billion Thai baht in taxes, fines, and fees relating to the sale of Shin Corp. shares in 2006. This overturns the earlier decisions by Thailand’s Central Tax Court and the Special Appeals Court, which had sided with Thaksin, previously canceling the Revenue Department’s tax assessment due to illegality.

The origins of this case trace back to a 2017 tax assessment by the Revenue Department, demanding payment from Thaksin following the sale of Shin Corp. shares. In 2023, Thaksin managed to initially win his case in both the Tax Court and Appeals Court. However, the Revenue Department challenged these rulings, leading to the Supreme Court’s recent reversal. Ministries agree to ease ride-hailing registration

The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry and Transport Ministry have reached an agreement to ease some of the burden drivers face when registering to provide a service via ride-hailing platforms.

The move follows a request from a group of drivers for support regarding this matter from both ministries. DES Minister Chaichanok Chidchob said the two ministries reached a conclusion to respond to the eight requests regarding the easing of the registration process. Continued …

Illegal Villa Still Operating Despite Demolition Orders on Samui

“Citizens for Samui,” a local civic group, reported yesterday that a luxury villa project in Bo Phut, Koh Samui, Surat Thani, continues to operate despite repeated demolition orders.

Senior Thai policymakers have issued stark warnings about the country’s economic trajectory, with the deputy prime minister describing Thailand as either “stuck in a rut” or potentially “falling off a cliff.”

Veerathai Santiprabhob, chairman of the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) and former Bank of Thailand governor, quoted Ekniti Nitithanprapas, deputy prime minister and finance minister, who stated last month that “Thailand’s economy is facing a stuck situation or may be falling off a cliff.” Continued …

TDRI warns Thai economy risks falling behind ASEAN

The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) has warned that Thailand is at risk of being overtaken by its ASEAN neighbors if the country fails to reform its economic model, stressing the need to develop “Good Jobs” and overhaul the nation’s production system to boost competitiveness.

TDRI Presiden Somkiat Tangkitvanich said during the annual seminar, “Reimagining Thailand’s Development Model”, that the Thai economy has entered a prolonged period of “chronic slow growth” lasting more than three decades. Thailand, once capable of expanding 7% per year, is now growing at only about 2%, placing it near the bottom of Asia — ahead of only Japan. Continued …

Thailand upbeat on exports to US

Businesses and economists are optimistic that the US will not be tough on trade negotiations with Thailand following Bangkok’s suspension of its peace accord with Cambodia, saying US President Donald Trump is feeling domestic pressure to lower taxes to ease rising inflation.

Burin Adulwattana, managing director of Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research), said Trump is expected to lower taxes on additional imported items to avoid the impacts of high tariffs on US consumers. Continued …

Council warns of tariff impact on GDP growth

The Thai economy must brace for the impact of the US’s reciprocal tariff policy, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), which projects next year’s GDP growth will slow to 1.7%, down from an estimated 2% this year.

For 2026, the NESDC expects Thailand’s economic growth to be lower than this year, largely due to the effects of America’s tariff measures, which are expected to weigh on global trade volume. Food shops get benefit boost from co-payment scheme

Food shops participating in the Khon La Khrueng Plus co-payment scheme and completing the government’s online delivery upskilling program will be eligible to receive benefits of up to 2,000 baht if they secure at least five delivery orders during the campaign period, deputy government spokeswoman Lalida Prertwiwatana said.

She said that the co-payment scheme is designed not only to ease living costs and stimulate economic activity, but also to help small food vendors expand into the rapidly growing online delivery market. Continued …

Data center services to earn Bt14.2 billion in 2026

Thailand’s data center service business is projected to post 14.2 billion baht in revenue in 2026, marking a 9% increase from the estimated 13.1 billion baht in 2025.

The Thai data center service business has experienced an annual total revenue growth rate of 11.1% over the past five years, primarily fueled by demand from the private sector, which accounts for roughly 95% of the need for data storage services in Thailand, said Theeraphoom Vuthipramote, a researcher at K-Research. Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia X, which recently launched flights to Istanbul, is planning to establish more long-haul routes to Europe sometime next year, its CEO Benyamin Ismail said yesterday.

American Tourist Issues Warning After Henna Disaster in Bangkok

An American tourist, Nick Nayersina, has issued a stark warning after his holiday in Bangkok took a painful turn due to a black henna face tattoo. The impromptu decision during a night out with friends led to a severe allergic reaction, causing blistering and oozing on his face, which may result in permanent scarring.

Nayersina was unaware that black henna, unlike traditional henna, contains chemicals harmful to the skin. Black henna is popular for its dark pigment, resembling a real tattoo. Thailand’s Administrative Court has ruled to annul a Labor Ministry announcement that authorized foreign pilots to operate flights within the Kingdom, finding the decision to be an unlawful exercise of ministerial discretion.

The decision, issued yesterday, arose from a lawsuit brought by the Thai Pilots Assn. and its president against the Labor Ministry and other government bodies. Section of Soi 94 closed to Saturday for repair work

Road resurfacing work has resumed on Soi 94 after months of delays, with a section of the road temporarily closed to traffic until July 12, Hua Hin City has announced.

The closure affects the stretch between the junction in front of the 7-Eleven and the junction at Soi Charoen Pattana 2, near Craft, Scruffy’s, and Pizza Garden. The road will be closed daily from 9am to 4pm through to Friday to allow for the installation of drainage pipes, which form part of the ongoing reinforced concrete resurfacing project. Continued …

Thailand Tightens Grip on Ride-Hailing with Tough New Rules

Thailand’s Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) has introduced stringent regulations for ride-hailing services.
