Thailand vs. Vietnam vs. Malaysia: Which is better for long-term living?

Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia have each carved out their own space in the long-term expat landscape. Thailand offers dependable healthcare and a well-established expat infrastructure. Vietnam stands out for rock-bottom costs and relentless urban energy. Malaysia brings modern living standards, cultural diversity, and an English-speaking environment that makes settling in remarkably smooth.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. The right choice depends on what you actually need day-to-day: your budget, visa requirements, healthcare priorities, and the kind of lifestyle that keeps you sane over the years, not just months. Continued …

Tighter Tax and Business Enforcement for Expats Explained

Following recent media coverage highlighting the Thai authorities’ increasing scrutiny of nominee company structures, MBMG Group and Hua Hin Accounting & Law have released further insights from their recent seminar, which examined the broader tax, business, and compliance framework now facing expatriates and foreign business owners in Thailand.

The event, titled “2026 Expat Crackdown – New Tax & Enforcement Rules Every Expat Must Understand,” provided practical guidance on how expats can legally structure their income, businesses, and property holdings under a much stricter enforcement environment expected in 2026. Continued …

Red levels of PM2.5 cover about one-third of Thailand, including PKK

Harmful levels (red levels) of ultrafine dust shrouded about one-third of Thailand this morning, including Bangkok and nearby provinces.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8 am that red levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 75.6 to 142.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air in Bangkok and 26 provinces. The air pollution was worse than red levels measured yesterday morning when red levels covered Bangkok and 19 provinces and the highest level of PM2.5 reached 116.4µg/m³. Continued …

Unnamed Khao Takiab restaurant said violating lincense

A forest task force has inspected a well-known restaurant on Khao Takiab in Hua Hin after finding that its license to operate in a forest area had expired, with officials confirming the business was still operating and legal proceedings have been initiated.

(Editor: The source of this report regularly does not name local businesses in legal cases such as this. We notice that other media have no problem with identifying those who break the law – see cat cafe story below – and we suspect the source of this article hides the truth to protect local buisnesses and Hua Hin’s “reputation”. Quite simply, that’s not how media should operate.)

The inspection took place on Monday after the Royal Forest Department received information from members of the public alleging that forest land in the Khao Takiab area of Nong Kae subdistrict was being used without permission. The report cited the operation of a restaurant, the presence of accommodation facilities and the construction of access routes within a forest area. Continued …

Cat Cafe Owner in Bangkok Faces Animal Cruelty Charges

A cat cafe owner in Bangkok’s Bang Khen district is under investigation for animal cruelty after a viral video showed him abusing cats at his business, the Just Cat Cafe. The footage, showing the owner hitting and throwing cats, prompted immediate backlash, leading him to close the cafe permanently. District officials confirmed the closure after inspecting the premises on Monday.

The incident came to light when the disturbing video was shared online, capturing the owner’s actions in a room full of cats. The visuals showed the man hitting several cats and throwing one against a wall. Allegations of poor hygiene, leading to skin infections among the cats, further fueled public outrage and demands for intervention. Continued …

US Siblings Reunite with Their Thai Hero

Three American siblings have been reunited with a Thai man who helped them during their childhood, over 50 years after they last met. During the Vietnam War, Raoul, Lisaree, and Mark Butland lived in Thailand with their father, an American GI in Ubon Ratchathani, where the now 80-year-old Poon Pong-aree supported their family.

Poon, then a tricycle driver and Muay Thai boxer, assisted the Butlands by finding them housing and a school, even teaching the boys boxing. Mark Butland recalled a tense moment when Poon protected the family from Vietnamese troops during a wedding in Laos. After returning to the US in 1972, they lost contact with Poon, although they never forgot his kindness. Continued …

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation carried out the operation on three female wild elephants in Bo Rai district, Trat province, on Jan. 25. The project was initiated due to the rapid growth in the wild elephant population in eastern forest areas. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said today the agency is closely monitoring reports of Nipah virus (NiV) infections in West Bengal, India, and the containment measures being implemented by Indian authorities.

(Question: Given the deadly nature of this virus, and the fact there is no cure, should Thailand allow tourists from India to enter the country at this time? Did Covid not teach us anything?)

And he would launch a rival to the United Nations that would make him World President for Life. Continued …

The suspension aims to block applicants potentially dependent on public benefits in the US.

The State Department has instructed consular officers worldwide to refuse visas under existing legal provisions while conducting a comprehensive review. This pause, without a set end date, will last until the reassessment concludes. Other affected ASEAN nations include Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, alongside countries such as Russia, Somalia, and Brazil. Continued …

Thai Property Market Faces Worst Slowdown in Nearly 30 Years

The Thai real estate market is experiencing its most severe downturn in nearly three decades, since the 1997 financial crisis. The stock of unsold residential properties has skyrocketed, with new project launches falling sharply. Consumer purchasing power has weakened due to high household debt, and the mortgage lending situation is tighter than ever before.

Experts are uncertain whether the market will recover within the next 2–3 years, especially given the ongoing low economic growth in Thailand. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts that Thailand’s economy will grow by only 1.6% in 2026, reflecting the deep structural issues still present in the economy. This downturn may not just be a cyclical slow down but could be a prolonged adjustment, with no clear end in sight. Continued …

Chartsiri Sophonpanich, president of Bangkok Bank, pointed out that in 2026 the world will continue to face risks, volatility, and uncertainty, driven by five key factors that will serve as both obstacles and opportunities in shaping ASEAN’s future. He made this remark during the opening of the AEC Business Forum 2026 yesterday.

Chartsiri explained that we live in a multipolar world, shaped by the rise of China, Russia, and the BRICS, challenging the global rule-based order. This rivalry is leading to trade fragmentation and disruptions in technology and supply chains. Continued …

Thailand targets increased revenue from foreign film productions

Thailand has set a target to increase revenue from foreign film productions by at least 10% in 2026, building upon a record-breaking performance in the previous year, the Department of Tourism said yesterday.

The Southeast Asian country welcomed more than 546 international film productions in 2025, generating a record high of over 7.717 billion baht (about 246.944 million U.S. dollars) in circulating revenue, said the department’s Director-General Jaturon Phakdeewanit. Continued …

Gold and silver hit record highs as geopolitical tensions rise

Gold and silver prices reached historic highs yesterday, driven by mounting geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty. Gold surged to a record $4,641.40 per ounce, and silver followed with a 5.2% rise, touching $92.23 per ounce.

The rise in precious metals was largely attributed to global geopolitical risks, particularly tensions between the US and Iran. Iran warned that it would attack US military bases in neighboring countries if the US intervened in protests within Iran. These threats, combined with broader economic concerns, pushed investors toward safe-haven assets like gold and silver. Continued …

Riding on a record-breaking 2024 and strong momentum in 2025, Thailand is setting an ambitious target of welcoming 2.5 million Indian visitors this year. With more than 1.3 million Indians having already traveled to the country by July, the market is emerging as one of Thailand’s most important growth drivers, underpinned by a strategic shift from volume-led recovery to value-focused tourism.

India remains among Thailand’s top three source markets. In an exclusive interaction with TravTalk, Nattachit Oonsiam, director, Tourism Authority of Thailand, Mumbai office, said the market has exceeded expectations since the post-pandemic rebound. Continued …

Parties vow to ban sales of cannabis

Three political parties – the People’s Party, Democrat, and Pheu Thai – have pledged to put cannabis back on the narcotics list and allow its use only for approved medical purposes, while operators urged the future administration to eliminate foreign businesses using nominees and unfair competition from illegal businesses.

In the run-up to next month’s general election, the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) and Thai Hotels Assn. (THA) hosted a political forum yesterday titled “Thai Tourism: What to Do Next?”, bringing together representatives from three political parties. Continued …

The victim succumbed to severe injuries at Hua Hin Hospital after being attacked late on New Year’s Eve, prompting a swift investigation by local authorities.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Dec. 31 at the fishing pier in Hua Hin subdistrict, Hua Hin district. Police from Hua Hin Police Station were called to reports of a serious assault and later confirmed that the injured man, identified as Her Hai Yin, aged 20 and a Myanmar national, had died from his wounds. The incident, which occurred on the evening of Jan. 1, left three people injured and caused panic among shoppers in a busy community area.

The shooting followed a confrontation between two groups of teenagers at a local market in Bang Saphan district. An argument escalated into violence, with a firearm being discharged three times, resulting in injuries to an adult male, a 14-year-old boy and the infant, who was initially believed to have been struck by a bullet. Temperatures in the Northeast are expected to fall by 2-4°C, while the rest of upper Thailand — excluding the lower south — is forecast to see temperatures drop by 1-3°C, with cool mornings. Continued …

Thailand denies Cambodia ‘land grab’

Thailand has rejected foreign media accusations that it has seized Cambodian territory or blocked Cambodian villagers from returning to their homes, insisting all Thai operations remain strictly within its jurisdiction.

The Joint Press Center on the Thailand–Cambodia border situation said recent descriptions by some foreign media outlets of Thailand “occupying” Cambodian land misrepresented both the facts on the ground and the legal status of the disputed areas. Continued …

Displaced families stranded on Thailand–Cambodia border despite ceasefire

Despite the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand holding temporarily, new realities have emerged on the ground that are difficult to reverse. A Cambodian village, Chalk Chai, is now under Thai control, with Thai troops visibly present inside the village, although Cambodia maintains that no territorial change has legally occurred.

The Cambodian authorities emphasize that troop positions since the ceasefire do not alter the existing borders, which are defined by treaties and international law. Nonetheless, civilians remain cut off from their homes, with many unable to access personal belongings and fearing military threats if they attempt to return. Continued …

The Thai real estate crisis: When domestic purchasing power collapses

In a situation where the Thai economy faces challenges on all sides, especially the high level of household debt, reaching 90% of GDP, and the slowdown in nationwide residential property transfers, projected to fall by 6% in 2026, the Thai real estate market is inevitably dependent on foreign investment.

The question of whether aggressively promoting the sale of real estate to foreigners, particularly luxury condominiums and villas in strategic areas, constitutes “selling out the nation” is therefore not just a moral issue, but a complex matter of policy and economic mechanisms. Continued …

Exporters face another tough year

Thailand’s exports in 2026 are expected to face volatility and challenges due to a global economic slowdown that is dampening demand in key trading nations. High household debt will curb purchasing power, while a sluggish recovery in the global labor market, geopolitical uncertainties, and rising trade protectionism will continue to influence this sector, noted the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC).

Dhanakorn Kasetrsuwan, chairman of TNSC, said shipments this year will be gradual and uneven, rather than a clear upward trend, because of the fragility of the global economy. Continued …

Thai Immigration Hits Back at Viral Airport Queue Claims

The Thai Immigration Bureau has refuted viral claims of extensive wait times at Suvarnabhumi airport, asserting that passengers are processed within 30 minutes even during peak travel seasons.

The controversy ignited with a social media post by a Japanese tourist, who mocked the lengthy queues experienced at the airport’s immigration counters, dubbing the situation “amazing.” This criticizm has gained traction, with other Japanese netizens voicing similar grievances and advising travelers to anticipate up to two-hour waits during busy holiday periods. Phuket tourism surge outpaces island’s infrastructure

Phuket’s tourism industry is calling on the government to urgently resolve what it describes as a deepening infrastructure crisis, warning that the island’s rapid tourism growth is outstripping its ability to cope.

The Phuket Tourist Assn. said that while tourism and the city’s expansion have continued year after year, infrastructure has not kept pace and cannot adequately support the scale of growth. The association urged the state to move from discussion to delivery, saying the problems have been talked about for years without meaningful implementation. Continued …

After the countdown, tourists question whether Pattaya is a beach paradise or a dumping ground

The fireworks had barely faded when Pattaya Beach revealed a very different New Year scene. As tourists woke on Jan. 1 expecting soft sand and sea views, many instead found piles of plastic cups, food containers, bottles, and cigarette butts scattered across the shoreline.

For first-time visitors especially, the contrast was jarring. Overnight, a globally marketed beach destination appeared to some less like a tropical paradise and more like a dumping ground after the party moved on. Continued …

Patong Beach Buried Under Trash After New Year Revelry

A shocking scene awaited early risers at Patong Beach as the first day of the year dawned. The iconic Thai tourist hotspot was engulfed in a sea of rubbish following the New Year’s Eve celebrations. Instead of its usual pristine sands, piles of waste covered the shore, left behind by revelers who welcomed 2026 with reckless abandon.

Photos highlighted the enormity of the environmental damage. An array of litter, including alcohol bottles, beer cans, and single-use plastics like water bottles and cups, was strewn across the coastline. Abandoned camping chairs and festive items added to the mess, creating a daunting task for cleanup crews. Continued …

What makes an elephant abandon her calf – and is it a problem?

Khao Tom, a two-month-old elephant, plays with a wildlife officer, nudging his face and curling her trunk around his wrist. When she lifts her trunk in the air, signaling that she is hungry, the team at the rescue center seems relieved – she has not been eating well. A vet prepares a pint-sized bottle of formula, which she gulps down impatiently.

Khao Tom has been in the care of Thailand’s national parks and wildlife department since September, when rangers rescued her from a farming area inside Lam Khlong Ngu national park. Born with a congenital disorder affecting her knees, she struggled to keep up with the herd. Within days of her birth, her mother had moved on without her. Continued …

Thai Party Plans to Axe 1,000 and 500 Baht Notes

The Thai Pakdee Party has announced a plan to cancel the 1,000 and 500 baht banknotes throughout Thailand. This move aims to combat corruption and disrupt illicit cash flows. Warong Dechgitvigrom, the party leader, asserted these notes enable gray money operations to disguise illegal wealth.

Warong says eliminating these notes will restrict corrupt networks from using physical cash for storing, transferring, and paying bribes, which are difficult to trace. Unlike digital transfers, cash transactions in large amounts leave no record, making them ideal for underhand deals. Continued …

The Restaurant Assn. opposes the new alcohol law requiring restaurant operators to share some responsibility for any issues caused by drunk patrons. The revised Alcoholic Beverage Control Act of 2025 prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages to people under 20, as well as those who are already drunk.

Under the new legislation, alcoholic beverage sellers must verify a buyer’s age when there is reasonable doubt, using a national ID card or other officially issued identification. Continued …

Bangkok issues PM2.5 health warning

Bangkok has issued a public health warning from tomorrow to Jan. 3, as weather conditions are expected to increase the risk of PM2.5 pollution across the capital. Weak winds and low atmospheric ventilation, most pronounced from nighttime through early morning, are forecast to trap airborne particles and allow pollution levels to build.

City officials have urged residents, farmers, and business operators to avoid all forms of open burning, including agricultural-residue burning, waste incineration, and other outdoor burning, as such activities would significantly worsen air quality during the high-risk period. Continued …

Strong baht adds pressure on condo market

A stronger baht is emerging as another major headwind for Thailand’s property sector, particularly the condominium market that relies heavily on foreign high-spending buyers, with signs some are delaying both title transfers and new deals amid exchange-rate uncertainty.

Industry assessments say the baht’s appreciation against major currencies such as the US dollar and the yuan makes Thai condominiums instantly more expensive for foreign investors — even if developers do not raise prices — reducing investment yields, especially for buyers planning to rent out units or hold them for medium- to long-term gains. Thai rice exports may fall as much as 12.5% in 2026

Thailand’s rice exports are projected to fall to 7 million tons next year from about 8 million in 2025, with the strong baht making it harder to compete with plentiful ‌supplies of India, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.

Thailand’s Air Travel Booms Ahead of New Year with Increased Seats and Reduced Fares

Air travel across Thailand has surged ahead of the 2026 New Year holiday, with passenger numbers climbing steadily throughout December, prompting the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and the Ministry of Transport to expand seat capacity and lower fares to support public travel.

As of Dec. 21, about 479,979 passengers had passed through Thai airports, including roughly 208,040 domestic travelers and 271,939 international passengers, bringing traffic close to pre-pandemic levels. Passenger volumes are expected to peak between Dec. 27 and Jan. 4. On international routes, travel between Thailand and China reached about 19,852 passengers, around 75% of pre-COVID levels, while arrivals from India totaled 10,616, exceeding pre-pandemic figures by about 10%. What will power Southeast Asia in the coming year? 5 trends to watch

Fears of a major trade slowdown in 2025 following a barrage of US tariffs turned out to be less destructive than expected, as Southeast Asia’s growth remained relatively resilient.

Front-loaded shipments, electronics exports, and foreign direct investment (FDI) turned out to be the engines behind the region’s resilience this year. This was even as domestic spending and consumer confidence struggled in some economies. Continued …

Inside Thailand’s return to medical-only cannabis

In June 2022, Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize marijuana. What followed was a “gold rush” of sorts, as entrepreneurs, farmers, and investors rushed to open shops, plant fields, and invest in what then seemed like a booming new industry.

Just seven months later, over 18,000 cannabis shops lined Thailand’s streets. Tourists flocked to the country for a taste of what was banned back home, while locals in rural communities cultivated cannabis alongside rice and corn. Continued …

How to See Thailand’s Wonders Without Feeling Like a Tourist

Some incorrectly assume that Thailand is synonymous with full moon–partying backpackers, over-the-top resorts, crowded beaches, and tourist-thronged temples. In reality, there’s a collective desire among Thais I’ve spoken to across the country for travelers to discover what their homeland is truly about: diverse cultures, a symphony of food, remarkable landscapes, mountainscapes and seascapes, and mind-boggling artisanship and architecture.

Smiling Albino travel company founder Dan Fraser, a Bangkok resident for 26 years, emphasizes the thrill of going off the grid in the country. “You get that high adrenaline rush feeling that you’re one of the first (travelers) to ever walk this trail or bike that route or hang out in this little curry shop in a riverside fishing village,” he says. “Thailand has that kind of opportunity in spades — it’s around every corner, even in Bangkok.” Continued …

Thai year of environmental upheaval

In 2025, Thailand faced a convergence of challenges that laid bare its vulnerability to environmental degradation, natural disasters, and complex regional dynamics.

From polluted rivers and hazardous air quality to seismic disturbances, destructive floods, and sensitive diplomatic disputes, these developments have tested the nation’s preparedness, governance, and capacity for cross-border cooperation. Together, they underscore mounting pressures on ecosystems, public safety, and national values amid an increasingly volatile regional landscape. Continued …

Plastic waste is choking the planet — recycling won’t be enough

If the world continues with business as usual and fails to make urgent systemic changes, plastic pollution leaking into the environment — on land, in water, and in the air — will more than double by 2040, reaching an estimated 280 million metric tons a year. The scale is likened to dumping a truckload of plastic waste into the environment every single second, nonstop.

The economic damage caused by the plastics system is also rising to shocking levels — especially when “hidden costs” that are not reflected in material prices are included. Animal Trafficking Allegations Denied by Dutch WFFT Founder

The Dutch founder of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), Edwin Wiek, has denied accusations of animal trafficking after receiving a tiger from the Karen National Liberation Army (KNU) in Kanchanaburi on Wednesday.

The allegations were made by retired national park official Chaiwat Limlikit-aksorn, who claimed that Wiek and Thai officials were involved in the illegal transfer of the tiger from Myanmar into Thailand. Chaiwat made these claims public online and called for an investigation. Continued …

Thai Court Ruling Shifts Credit Card Fraud Proof to Banks

Thailand’s Supreme Court has ruled that banks, not customers, have the responsibility to prove who authorized disputed credit card transactions. This ruling sets a legal precedent aimed at enhancing consumer protection amid increasing cyber scams. By placing the burden on banks, the decision represents a major step towards empowering consumers against unauthorised credit card charges.

The landmark decision, Supreme Court ruling No. 2624/2568, originated from a case where a bank pursued a customer over disputed charges made without the cardholder’s consent. The customer insisted their card had been compromised, while the bank contended liability lay with the cardholder, adhering to typical credit card agreements holding users responsible for all transactions. The Bangkok Air Quality Information Center this morning reported a concerning rise in PM2.5 levels across the city, with many areas exceeding safe limits.

The average PM2.5 concentration for Bangkok is 36.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), just below the standard limit of 37.5 µg/m³. However, certain areas are facing dangerously high pollution levels. Continued …

Thailand sets SEA Games gold record

Thai athletes more than compensated for the football heartbreak of the previous night by setting a new benchmark for total gold medals at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games yesterday.

As of last night, the country’s haul stood at 232 golds, with more expected before the close of competition. The figure comfortably eclipsed the previous record of 205, set by Vietnam at their home Games in 2021 — an edition delayed and disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Continued …

Cambodia Tallies Heavy Losses in Border Conflict

Cambodia is counting mounting human and economic costs from renewed fighting with Thailand, as hospitals treat severely wounded soldiers and civilians flee border areas. The second round of clashes has lasted longer and proved more destructive than the five-day conflict in July, with heavy casualties and widespread displacement.

The fighting resumed on Dec. 7 along the 800-kilometer border, involving artillery exchanges and close-quarter battles over forested hilltops. Thai air strikes have hit targets inside Cambodia, which has limited air defenses and no significant air force, while Cambodia has fired BM21 rockets into Thailand, killing one civilian and injuring others despite early evacuations. Thai marines repel Cambodian forces’ attempt to retake Trat border area

Gunfire erupted once again along the Thai-Cambodian border early yesterday as Cambodian forces attempted to reclaim the so-called Ban Sam Lang (three houses) area, prompting Thai marines to respond with artillery and mortar fire, forcing the intruders to retreat in disarray.

Capt. Thammanoon Wanna, commander of the Trat Marine Task Force, yesterday confirmed that Thai surveillance detected movement of three to four Cambodian vehicles entering the Ban Sam Lang area of Ban Nong Ri in Trat province during the early hours. Continued …

International media view on Thai-Cambodian border clash, scam centers

The ongoing Thai-Cambodian border conflict has entered its 13th day. Recently, The Wall Street Journal reported on the Thai Air Force’s attack on a “scam center” as part of the strategic objectives in the region.

The paper highlighted that many buildings in Cambodia, far from being mere entertainment venues or tourist accommodations, are, in fact bases, for online scams, siphoning money from victims worldwide. These operations are linked to human trafficking, money laundering, and cybercrime on an industrial scale. Continued …

Thai banks cut interest rates following MPC decision

In a move aligned with the Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC) unanimous decision to reduce the policy interest rate by 0.25% to 1.25% from 1.5% per annum, several commercial and state-owned banks in Thailand have announced cuts to their interest rates. This is aimed at easing the financial burden on consumers amid an economy showing clear signs of slowing down and increased risks.

For retail clients, KBank has adjusted its MRR (minimum retail rate) by 0.01%, from 6.78% to 6.68% per annum. Additionally, deposit rates have been cut by 0.05% to 0.10%. These changes will be effective from Dec. 22. Continued …

Agricultural economy to grow despite headwinds

The country’s agricultural economy is expected to see slightly slower but still robust growth of 2%-3% next year as landowners and farmers have secured more water resources and benefit from higher demand in the global market, as well as accelerated domestic economic growth.

However, the industry still faces a raft of challenges, including the impact of climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and higher tax barriers, according to the Office of Agricultural Economics. Continued …

Working sideways – how affordability reshaped ambition

In Bangkok, work no longer arrives as a single, contained thing. For many younger people, especially Gen Z and early-career millennials, employment sits inside a wider arrangement rather than at the center of it.

A full-time role might exist, but it is rarely the whole story. It is supplemented by freelance work, part-time consulting, tutoring, content creation, small businesses, or projects that are still forming. This is often described as hustling, but that framing misses the point. What’s emerging is not a chase for scale, but an attempt to balance affordability with autonomy. Continued …

Rivals, rain, and rising costs: Thailand’s tourism crown slips

As the windows rattled from distant explosions, British tourist Brian sat sleepless in a dim hotel room in Thailand’s Trat province, waiting out a curfew he had not known existed. With artillery ringing out from across the border with Cambodia, his dreams of reaching the island of Koh Kood seemed to dissolve into the darkness.

“The police said the road was closed and I’d have to find accommodation overnight,” Brian said. “I heard explosions all through the night, but I got out first thing in the morning.” Continued …

Chiang Mai guesthouses pivot to long-haul markets

Tourism in Chiang Mai could reap benefits from robust long-haul markets, while the segment is expected to continue growing next year as LOT Polish Airlines became the latest carrier to confirm a new scheduled flight to Bangkok.

La-iad Bungsrithong, a board advisor for Thai Hotels Assn., said Chiang Mai tourism operators this year have learned to adapt their businesses amid the absence of two major feeder markets, Chinese and domestic tourists, which severely declined. Continued …

Footage shows several flight attendants using bottled water to extinguish the fire, which was ultimately brought under control. Continued …

Video exposes what really happens to tigers at ‘selfie zoos’

Investigations by World Animal Protection have documented conditions at 17 major tiger entertainment venues across Thailand. The findings paint a disturbing picture of systematic abuse hidden behind tourist-friendly facades. Continued …

25% of new cars sold globally in 2025 were EVs, 20% in Thailand

More than 25% of new cars sold globally in 2025 are now electric, according to new analysis from energy think tank Ember. This growth is increasingly driven by emerging markets that, only a few years ago, had minimal adoption of EVs.

Indonesia has reached 15% this year, surpassing the US for the first time. Thailand has reached 20% and has sold more EVs in the first three quarters of 2025 than Denmark. These shifts demonstrate how rapidly the region is transitioning from a low base to a position of leadership. Continued …

Malaysia Postpones Special ASEAN Meeting on Thailand-Cambodia Conflict

Malaysia’s government has postponed a meeting of foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that it has called to address the escalating border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. The meeting, initially scheduled for yesterday, will now be held on Dec. 22 after Thailand requested a delay.

“We are still coordinating, monitoring. They (Thailand) have asked for a slight postponement of the special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting, so we are postponing to get everything in order,” Anwar said. “But we are still appealing to them to stop the fighting. Very critical. I’m in touch with them virtually on a daily basis.” Continued …

16 Thai Civilians Dead Amid Ongoing Border Tensions

Border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia persisted yesterday, with Thai officials confirming the civilian death toll has now reached 16. The Thai Defense Ministry has reported limited economic impacts so far, despite escalating military actions. Heavy shelling continues at strategic locations, with both sides exchanging fire.

In recent developments, Rear Adm. Surasant Kongsiri stated Cambodian forces continued their assault, prompting Thai military retaliation. BM-21 rockets targeted strategic sites like Hill 677 and the Chong An Ma border pass in Ubon Ratchathani early yesterdy. Subsequently, they deployed heavy weapons at Hill 350 and the Prasat Ta Khwai temple in Surin province, an ongoing flashpoint in the conflict. Continued …

Anutin Tells Trump: Cambodia Must Cease Fire First

This comes after Trump threatened tariffs on Thailand and Cambodia if hostilities continue. Trump made these remarks in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, highlighting his use of tariffs as leverage.

Thailand’s 1.64 Million Vacant Housing stock: A Wake-Up Call for the Real Estate Market

Thailand is grappling with a staggering oversupply in its residential property market, with 1.64 million housing units currently unoccupied nationwide. Valued at approximately Bt3.45 trillion, this idle inventory represents an economic waste nearly equivalent to the country’s annual budget.

The surplus has been attributed to a combination of overzealous construction projects, speculative investments, and a slowing economy, which has dampened consumer purchasing power. Industry experts warn that if the situation persists, it could lead to a prolonged downturn in the real estate sector, affecting developers, financial institutions, and related industries. Thai baht strengthens 2.2% against regional currencies

The Thai baht has appreciated by 2.2% against regional currencies from Dec. 1-16, outperforming other currencies such as the Malaysian ringgit (1.1%), Japanese yen (0.9%), and Singapore dollar (0.5%). This has raised concerns over the rapid strengthening of the baht, prompting the Bank of Thailand (BOT) to step up scrutiny of dollar transactions, particularly in the gold-trading sector.

BOT Gov. Vitai Ratanakorn explained that the baht’s rise in December was largely driven by the weakening of the US dollar, with additional pressure coming from domestic factors such as seasonal inflows linked to tourism, exports, and investments in stocks and bonds. A significant increase in dollar sales by gold traders to buy baht has also contributed to the rise. Continued …

A warning has issued about a pickpocket gang operating in Bangkok’s Chinatown after CCTV evidence revealed three women stealing from a tourist. A posting on social media shows the gang targeting a foreign woman on Songwat Road.

In the video, the suspects wore disguises including hats and face masks, using umbrellas to obscure the view during the theft. The foreign tourist became suspicious when the same suspect attempted a second theft, prompting her to distance herself from the group. Continued …

The focus remains on international visitors, with a significant portion expected from Russia, India, and China. Continued …

Thai Men’s Health Gains Attention as a New Generation Embraces Self-Care

For decades, men’s health in Thailand has remained largely in the shadows. Conditions such as hormone imbalances, erectile dysfunction, chronic fatigue, stress, and body-image concerns are widespread but rarely discussed publicly.

While the country has made significant strides in areas such as women’s health, maternal care, and mental health advocacy, men continue to face cultural expectations to appear strong, self-reliant, and unaffected — a burden experts increasingly describe as a “silent health crisis.” Continued …

Thailand’s fragmented energy plans

The world is racing toward clean energy. Thailand, blessed with sun and wind, should be surging ahead. Instead, the country is stuck with one of the lowest shares of clean power in the region – an awkward contrast to its ambitions on paper.

As global demand for electricity jumped by more than 1,050 terawatt-hours in 2024, clean energy took the lead. In Asia-Pacific, it accounted for three-quarters of new power generation. Continued …

Thailand aims to reuse 100% of its plastics by 2027

They are preparing petrochemical producers for the European Union’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM), which could soon extend to plastics. In the global fight against climate change, plastics have emerged as both a symbol of modern convenience and an environmental challenge. Continued …

Hope for tigers grows as Thailand safeguards a key link in their habitat

Following the path of the tiger isn’t easy. Yet the three rangers, clad in camouflage, move lithely through the steep bamboo thicket, tracking the muddy hoofprints of a sambar deer. A breeze rustles the stone oak trees as the sound of grasshoppers pierces the silence. It’s easy to imagine the tiger slinking confidently across this terrain, the master of its Thai kingdom. Continued …

Hua Hin golf course may be used for flood control

A meeting on flood defense planning was held on Thursday to assess the potential use of part of the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course as a water-retention area to help reduce flood risks within the city. The session focused on how existing open land could support a wider flood defense system for Hua Hin.

Discussions were held on site at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, where officials examined the terrain and surrounding drainage patterns. The aim was to identify suitable areas that could temporarily store excess water during periods of heavy rainfall and release it in a controled manner, reducing pressure on drainage systems and nearby communities. Thailand and Cambodia agree on new ceasefire

In a significant diplomatic move, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire following several days of deadly clashes. The renewed truce aims to halt all shooting and adhere to the original peace accord facilitated by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

An escalation in cross-border violence threatened the original ceasefire that Malaysia brokered in July. Despite the initial agreement, Thailand and Cambodia engaged in a propaganda war and minor skirmishes persisted. The conflict stems from long-standing territorial disputes related to a 1907 map drawn during Cambodia’s French colonial period, which Thailand disputes. Continied …

Anutin rebuts Trump, vows to keep fighting

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today publicly rejected comments by US President Donald Trump, who had claimed that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a ceasefire and described the landmine incident that killed and injured Thai soldiers as an “accident”.

Responding in English, Anutin posted: “It’s definitely not a roadside accident. Thailand will continue to perform military actions until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people. I want to make it clear. Our actions this morning already spoke.” Continued …

So Who Is Lying—Anutin or Trump? Or Did They Simply Misunderstand Each Other

While Thai PM Anutin, speaking after his discussion with Trump, stated that if there were to be a request for a ceasefire, it would have to be conveyed to Cambodia first, and only then could matters proceed.

About a little over two hours later, Trump posted on social media shortly after midnight Bangkok time yesterday (the morning of Dec. 12 in Washington, DC) that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to “CEASE all shooting effective this evening.” “This evening,” when accounting for the 12-hour time difference between Washington, DC, and Bangkok, would still most likely mean Saturday night in Bangkok. Guns still blazing as Thai–Cambodian border war enters Day 6 despite Trump call

Clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border continued overnight in Trat province despite calls by Donald Trump with both leaders. Thai forces shelled artillery bases in Koh Kong and deployed F-16s at dawn to bomb a key bridge after detecting a Cambodian troop and weapons build-up.

In Trat province, clashes raged throughout the night and into the early hours, expanding as far as Hat Lek in Khlong Yai district. Thai forces struck artillery positions in Koh Kong and later called in F-16 fighter jets to bomb a strategic bridge after intelligence indicated that Cambodian troops and heavy weapons were moving up close to the frontier. F-16s Bomb Bridge Near Trat Border

The Royal Thai Air Force carried out an air strike early yesterday, deploying two F-16 fighter jets to bomb the Chai Chum Nia Bridge in Pursat Province, Cambodia. The operation followed reports of troop reinforcements and the movement of heavy weapons near Thailand’s border in Trat Province, with the bridge identified as a key logistical route.

Thai security officials said the decision to target the bridge followed several days of monitoring military movements in the area. Naval forces had detected a continuous build-up of troops and the movement of heavy weapons close to the Thai border in Trat Province. These developments raised concerns about potential security threats and prompted coordination between naval and air force units. Continued …

This marked the fifth consecutive day of clashes along the border.

In the latest violence, Cambodian troops opened fire with artillery, followed by the first salvo of BM-21 rockets, alternating with further artillery strikes. Thai forces returned fire intermittently before fighting resumed along the entire border line. Continued …

Cambodia demands bribes from Thai citizens to return home

Thai nationals in Cambodia face challenges returning home through the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province. Reports indicate that Cambodian authorities prevented their crossing without providing an explanation. Relatives allege demands for payments of 12,500 baht per person to allow passage.

These developments occur against a backdrop of increased security measures along the Thai-Cambodian border due to rising tensions between the two nations. On Dec. 10, Thai officials ordered Cambodian nationals in Thailand to return home over security concerns, citing suspicions of espionage activities. Following this, Cambodian authorities reportedly blocked Thai citizens from crossing back, prompting a halt in the repatriation of Cambodian nationals from Thailand. Continued …

Thailand’s flagship high-speed rail project linking Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao faces further delays after the House dissolution pushed the government into caretaker status, preventing approval of key amendments to the CP-led PPP contract.

Large-scale investment schemes under the Ministry of Transport that were queued for Cabinet approval must now be held back for the next government. Among them is the high-speed rail link in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumim and U-Tapao airports, where the state is preparing to seek Cabinet approval to amend the public-private partnership (PPP) contract. Siblings return to Thailand after 50 years seeking to find the man who watched over them in 1975

Three American siblings whose father was stationed in Thailand with the US military in a media role in 1975 returned to the kingdom this week. Their mission was to find a Thai man who had cared for them as children.

The three, two brothers and a sister, carried sharp memories of Poon Pong-aree, who watched over them in northern Thailand. Armed only with memories, a few images, a name and a rough idea of their father’s old post, they still managed to locate him. A stark and emotional reunion followed. The siblings later confirmed that their sole purpose in returning to Thailand was to meet their childhood guardian. Continued …

Thailand’s Food Delivery Trends Reveal Nation’s Evolving Palate

The dramatic rise of matcha reflects a growing appetite for what industry insiders are calling “affordable luxury” – premium products that feel indulgent without breaking the bank. Despite individual cups often costing upward of 100 baht, and some specialty versions reaching 250 baht, Thai consumers have embraced the Japanese green tea powder as more than just a trend. Rainmaking operations launched in Hua Hin to combat air pollution

Thailand has commenced a new royal rainmaking operation in Hua Hin to tackle hazardous PM2.5 air pollution affecting Bangkok, its surrounding provinces and northern regions. The initiative, led by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation, officially began yesterday. Authorities aim to reduce airborne particulate matter and protect public health ahead of the busy year-end period.

The Royal Rainmaking Department conducts weather modification not only to combat drought and increase water resources but also to mitigate haze, forest fires, and fine particulate pollution. The 2026 fiscal year plan includes operations in Hua Hin and Rayong for Bangkok and surrounding areas using five aircraft. Continued …

Thai police crack down on black-smoke vehicles as PM2.5 rises

In a significant move against rising PM2.5 pollution, Thai police have initiated nationwide inspections of vehicles for black smoke emissions, arresting over 9,000 offenders. The initiative includes setting up 15 stringent checkpoints across Bangkok to combat this escalating environmental issue, particularly pressing during the winter months.

PM2.5, a hazardous air pollutant, primarily originates from three sources: diesel engine emissions, open-field burning, and low atmospheric pressure. Due to these factors, traffic police have partnered with Bangkok authorities and other agencies to enforce strict measures against polluting vehicles. Continued …

Bangkok Chokes: Dangerous Smog Levels Grip City Again

The highest measurement was in Samut Sakhon province.

Orange levels, which start affecting health, were recorded in 30 provinces, with figures between 38.9 to 72µg/m³. Provinces facing these conditions include Ayutthaya, Phetchaburi, Prachin Buri, and Chanthaburi, among others. Meanwhile, 23 provinces enjoyed good or very good air quality, mostly located in the north and south, with PM2.5 levels ranging from 9.7 to 25µg/m³. Continued …

Hat Yai flood exposes failures in Thailand’s crisis response

Flooding that engulfed the southern city of Hat Yai last month, killing over 100 people, also exposed deadly gaps in Thailand’s disaster-management system, experts say. They warn that unless lessons are learned from the massive floods, the ongoing cycle of preventable tragedies will continue.

“If governance doesn’t improve and people are not alerted, disasters like this will keep recurring,” said Assoc. Prof. Seree Supratid, director of Rangsit University’s Center for Climate Change and Disasters. Continued …

Deadly Asian floods are no fluke. They’re a climate warning, scientists say

Southeast Asia is being pummeled by unusually severe floods this year, as late-arriving storms and relentless rains wreak havoc that has caught many places off guard.

Deaths have topped 1,400 across Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, with more than 1,000 still missing in floods and landslides. In Indonesia, entire villages remain cut off after bridges and roads were swept away. Thousands in Sri Lanka lack clean water, while Thailand’s prime minister acknowledged shortcomings in his government’s response. Continued …

Government Apologizes for Flood Relief Chaos, Extends Deadlines

The Thai government has apologized following a major disruption in flood relief efforts after a crucial website crashed. This shutdown hindered registration for relief payments for flood victims in the south. The process has now been simplified to require only an ID card, bypassing the need for community consultations as per the latest cabinet resolution.

Government spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat expressed regret over the registration issues, emphasizing the urgency of getting financial help for those in need. The aim has been to act swiftly, but regulatory hurdles caused delays. In a move to expedite relief, ministers decided to exempt Songkhla from community consultations due to the severity of the flood crisis there. Continued …

Flood income loss at Bt30 billion this month

The private sector estimates the deadly floods in the south have caused income losses of 20-30 billion baht, weighing on GDP growth in the final quarter of this year.

Speaking at the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) meeting yesterday, Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, said the floods in southern Thailand are expected to result in 20-30 billion baht worth of income losses in December alone, reducing fourth-quarter GDP by 0.1%-0.2%. Hat Yai flood relief drowning in red tape

Once a thriving southern trading post, Hat Yai has been swamped not only by muddy water but by the kind of hard, bitter lessons disasters bring. The failures have been endless, from inefficient warning systems and uncoordinated responses and rescue efforts, to the current chaos of claiming flood compensation.

Time and again, bureaucracy has failed to save the public. Instead, it has proven itself absurdly cruel, hindering aid and actively piling suffering onto the disaster victims. Continued …

Thai Economy Faces Severe Slump in 2026 as China Overcapacity and Floods Bite

Thailand’s business committee has issued a warning that the nation’s economy is set for a severe slowdown in 2026, with growth projected to fall as low as 1.6%. The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) yesterday attributed the bleak outlook to two primary factors: escalating competition from China’s industrial overcapacity and the crippling financial toll of the recent southern floods.

Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), stated that the global economy is slowing, with China being a key drag. Weak domestic demand is forcing Beijing to rely heavily on exports, intensifying competitive pressures on Thai businesses, especially in manufacturing. Continued …

Thailand’s Automotive Sector at a Crossroads

Thailand, Southeast Asia’s leading automotive hub, is undergoing a profound transformation, as the global shift from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates. Once a pillar of the economy contributing more than 10% of GDP and employing over half a million workers, the sector now faces both short-term disruption and long-term opportunity.

Under the government’s “30@30” vision, Thailand aims for 30% of domestic vehicle production to be EVs by 2030. To achieve this, policymakers have rolled out two major incentive packages focused on stimulating demand through subsidies, tax cuts, and a 1:1 local production requirement. Continued …

Domestic Airfare Prices Plunge as China Routes Cut

Domestic airfares in Thailand are seeing a notable decrease as airlines withdraw from underperforming Chinese routes to bolster domestic flights. This shift comes amid complaints over high fares for routes like Bangkok-Hat Yai, where tickets reportedly reached nearly 10,000 baht. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is investigating, as low-cost carriers have a price ceiling of 7,266 baht for this route.

Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth of Bangkok Airways reported a 2.2% drop in average airfares year-on-year for the third quarter, with a further 1.1% decline over nine months. This reduction is credited to increased competition among local airlines, leading to discounted fares. Meanwhile, weak demand from foreign travellers has pushed Thai AirAsia’s average fares down by 12% to 1,633 baht. Continued …

Tourism Success Hinges on Affordability as Middle-Class Travel Expands

The ultimate factor determining tourist destination choices is affordability, with expanding middle-class purchasing power reshaping global travel patterns, according to Omri Morgenshtern, CEO of Agoda, speaking at a media briefing yesterday.

“In the end, what really makes travelers decide to come is cost,” Morgenshtern said. “When middle-class people have more disposable income, they can spend more. In the past, they might have traveled domestically, but now they can travel internationally. If it’s cheaper than traveling at home, they’ll go abroad.” Continued …

The charge will rise from 730 baht per person to 1,120 baht per person, effective from early 2026.

It is expected that AOT will take some time to gather data and consult with the CAAT before presenting the proposal for approval. The existing tariff rate, which is used to calculate power bills, is 3.94 baht a unit, applicable between September and December. The ERC based the new rate mainly on a proposal by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), said Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, secretary-general of the ERC. Continued …

Deputy Permanent Secretary Sakda Alapach said the figure was expected to “increase only slightly” as residents returned to their homes. Continued …

According to Vissarut Panyapinyopon, real estate lending head at KKP Bank, and Kornthip Puckprasurtdee, the bank’s real estate industry data researcher, the era of mass-market, large-scale projects is over, and survival depends on financial prudence, hyper-specific targeting, and a willingness to think smaller. Modern rainfall patterns are no longer merely “heavy” — they now come as high-intensity downpours, hammering cities for hours and overwhelming drainage systems. Daily rainfall of 300–400 millimeters has exceeded all previous models, breaking the city’s defensive thresholds and surpassing the limits of aging infrastructure. Continued …
