Ministries to clamp down on crop burning as pollution levels rise

In a move to fight air pollution, the ministries of Natural Resources and Environment, and Agriculture and Cooperatives jointly declared war on crop burning, vowing to crack down on one of the main sources of PM2.5 fine dust.

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter and can be inhaled, boosting the risk of health problems like heart disease and asthma. Continued … 

Rapid response plan to cut PM2.5 in the works

Some 11 urgent measures were unveiled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Tuesday to address the PM2.5 smog problem, with a focus on quickly adjusting actions to ensure effective results.

The measures will aim to rapidly tackle forest fires and smog to minimize environmental impacts and safeguard public health, Jatuporn Buruspat, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, told a press conference. Continued …

Bus driver in fatal PKK cash was asleep at wheel

The driver of a bus that crashed in Prachuap Khiri Khan, killing 15 people, has confessed to falling asleep at the wheel, leading to a charge of reckless driving.

The accident, which occurred on Dec. 5, involved a tour bus enroute from Bangkok to Na Thawi, which veered off the road and collided with a large tree along Phetkasem Road in Thap Sakae near Wanakorn National Park. Cold wave from China hits Thailand: Significant temperature drop and heavy rain forecast

Thailand is currently under the influence of a new surge of high-pressure area or cold air mass from China, as declared by the Thai Meteorological Department.

The prime minister and interior minister have released a joint directive suspending the issuing of gun licenses for one year to prevent more shooting tragedies.

Thai wage committee upholds 2.37% minimum wage increase

Yesterday, a senior government official announced that the tripartite wage committee has decided to uphold their previously agreed-upon plan to increase the average daily minimum wage by 2.37%.

The committee, consisting of representatives from the government, employers, and employees, has agreed to uplift the pay threshold range to 330 to 370 baht, starting in January. This was confirmed by Pairoj Chotikasathien, the permanent secretary of labor. Continued …

Explosive growth in Thai insurance industry predicted for 2024

The Thai General Insurance Assn. (TGIA) has foreseen an unprecedented surge in the insurance industry, with premiums expected to skyrocket to 303 billion baht in 2024.

Time for dithering on tourist insurance to stop

The Thai cabinet on Tuesday finally shelved the long-running plan for a foreign tourism levy. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, however, rejected a stop-gap measure to replace it. He ordered the introduction of automatic insurance cover for all foreign tourists to be provided through the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

A passenger van with a Bangkok license plate collided with a rice-harvesting truck with a Phetchaburi license plate yesterday morning on Petchaburi Road (southbound) in Phetchaburi Province, seriously injuring two foreign tourists.

The Cabinet has resolved to cap the price of diesel and electricity for households in a bid to ease people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

Srettha, who also doubles as finance minister, said under the measure proposed by the Energy Ministry, diesel will be retailed at no more than 30 baht per liter for three months, while the price of electricity for households using less than 300 units per month will be capped at no more than 4.2 baht per unit. Fine dust pollution spikes across Thailand

Intensified fine dust pollution has led to heightened levels of fine particulate matter under 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, in 30 provinces across Thailand, including Bangkok. This development was recorded yesterday through the satellite-based Check Foon application, developed by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Samut Songkhram experienced the highest dust level, peaking at 84.1 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) at 8am. This level significantly surpassed the safe threshold of 50µg/m³, making it the only province to reach a code red status, indicating potentially harmful air. The air pollution crisis in Thailand, specifically the hazardous PM2.5 particles, presents a formidable challenge to new Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his cabinet. This issue transcends mere environmental concerns, morphing into a litmus test for the government’s commitment to public health and its willingness to confront entrenched industrial and agricultural interests.

PM2.5 particles are fine particulate matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Bus accident in PKK’s Thap Sakae leaves 14 dead, 35 injured

At least 14 people were killed and 35 others injured when a tour bus left the road and crashed into a tree in Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Thailand’s weekly Covid-19 cases surge over 500, with three fatalities

The Department of Disease Control in Thailand (DDC) reported a sudden surge in weekly Covid-19 cases, with over 500 new patients and three fatalities. The DDC revealed 88 cases of pneumonia among Covid patients. The report, which covers the period from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, confirms an average of 76 hospital admissions and one death per day.

The cabinet on Monday approved a tax refund scheme for shopping to stimulate domestic spending early next year and promote wider use of electronic invoices, according to the Finance Ministry.

Electricity and fuel prices are expected to increase next year

Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. PM rejects electricity tariff hike proposal

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin rejected the electricity tariff hike approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday, explaining that he was worried the increase would be too burdensome for consumers. Most of the general public are currently facing rising cost of living. Srettha added that the increase could hurt the government’s popularity in the next general election.

Pork prices sizzle down, fueling October’s inflation cool-off

A decline in pork prices significantly contributed to a reduction in the inflation rate in October, an anonymous figure within the Finance Ministry has revealed. The inflation experienced a year-on-year decrease of 0.31% in October, largely due to a 0.2% drop in energy prices, attributed to lower oil costs and employed subsidies to keep energy prices in check.

Informal debtors owing Bt1.5 billion flood govt mediation service

Over 37,000 people owing a combined 1.5 billion baht applied for the government’s informal-debt resolution program in its first two days, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern revealed that 37,579 people had registered for debt mediation as of Saturday at 4pm. Of these, 36,338 registered online, while 1,241 visited Debt Relief Assistance Centers set up around the country.
