Thai-Italian Chamber festivities this weekend

The Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce (TICC) (TICC) will host a series of events in Hua Hin from Nov. 3-5 under the banner “A long weekend at the Royal Coast Riviera.”

British Chamber to hold event Nov 10

Brakes Put On Sugar Price Hike

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai yesterday halted a four-baht increase in the ex-factory price of sugar nationwide for the 2023/24 production season, excluding VAT, as earlier announced by the Cane and Sugar Board.

Speaking after chairing a meeting of the Central Committee on Prices of Goods and Services, Phumtham said it has been agreed to designate sugar as a controlled product, with the panel’s resolution to be submitted to the Cabinet tomorrow and announced in the Royal Gazette tomorrow. Continued …

Bars to open until 4am in tourist areas from New Year

Entertainment places will be allowed to stay open until 4am in tourist provinces from this New Year festival onward, to help stimulate the economy, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Monday.

Anutin, a deputy prime minister, said it was Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s policy and would be initially implemented in provinces popular with tourists, especially foreigners. He cited Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. Hua Hin was not mentioned. Continued …

Thailand on the way to becoming a visa-free zone for tourists

Following Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s announcements to boost foreign tourism to Thailand, 80% of holiday arrivals no longer require a prior visa or a visa on arrival. They have become visa exempt, or visa free, travelers as far as Thailand is concerned.

US tourist stabbed to death in Phuket hotel

In Phuket, the body of a foreign male tourist was found stabbed to death inside a hotel room. The decomposing state of the body suggested he had been dead for 2-3 days. Notably, two passports were discovered, identifying him as a dual national of the United States and Costa Rica.

The so-called Naga fireballs witnessed in Nong Khai on Sunday night were nothing but projectile bullets fired from the Lao side of the Mekong, a Chulalongkorn University academic said on Monday.

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets

Hua Hin-Chiang Mai flights reduced to two per week

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

Cool season in Thailand delayed and warmer due to El Niño

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) announced that the onset of this year’s cool season is likely to be delayed by approximately two weeks, and will be warmer than usual. The shift has been attributed to unpredictable weather patterns and the influence of the El Niño phenomenon.

Typically, Thailand’s cool season commences around mid-October. However, this year the initial moderate cool spell is slated to hit the northern regions of Thailand tomorrow, marking the start of the climate shift. Study shows digital wallet scheme will boost GDP with minimal impact on public debt

A recent study conducted by the Fiscal Policy Research Institute shows that the 10,000-baht digital handout scheme could significantly boost Thailand’s GDP, the PM’s office spokesman Chai Watcharong said.

Isaan, Thailand: the good and the bad

If you’ve been to Thailand, the chances are you’ve met people from Isaan without realizing it. The hotel receptionist in Phuket, the tuk-tuk driver in Chiang Mai, the bartender in Hua Hin or the masseuse in Koh Samui could all be from the region that borders Laos and the Mekong River to the north and east, and Cambodia to the south.

Legal casinos and gambling in Thailand being weighed carefully

Thailand’s leaders are considering plans put forward last year for legalizing gambling and casinos in the Kingdom. In September, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin came out in favor of the move and has promised to bring the matter to cabinet.

By and large, public opinion is hostile to the prospect, as are many experts, given the history of gambling in the country and the social ills it creates. Rescued baby deer doing well at WFFT

That abandoned baby Muntjac deer Expat News reported on a few days ago is now safe and recovering at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). The deer, who has been named Cha Lao, was found all alone and was being chased by street dogs when it was rescued. AT WFFT, he was given a medical examination and has since been receiving specialist care. including regular bottle feeding with warmed milk. He is a little wobbly on his feet, and at just a few days old, the next few weeks will be vital for his survival.

The Thai cabinet announced four New Year public holidays yesterday from Dec. 29 through Jan. 1, said Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, secretary-general of the office of the prime minister.

Two killed, two injured in violent brawl over a woman

A violent brawl over a woman led to the deaths of two individuals and the injuries of two others in Prachinburi province. The violent brawl incident took place in front of a residential building where the victims were drinking alcohol. The police were able to apprehend one suspect at midnight today.

The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) is worried the impact of the Israel-Hamas war on Thai tourism could become severe if the conflict expands. ATTA President Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn said the Thai tourism industry this year has been buoyed by over 1 million Russian visitors, attracted by the warm weather, perceived safety, and affordable living.

Phichit to turn Akara Gold Mine into a mountain bike track

Sri Lanka’s cabinet approved issuing free tourist visas to visitors from seven countries, including China, India and Russia, a statement issued by the media ministry said on Tuesday, to boost tourism and help revive its crisis-hit economy.

Thailand is facing a unique demographic problem unlike other aging countries in northeast Asia and Europe. The country is growing old before it attains economic prosperity, a situation pointed out by a recent article in The Economist.

Unlike their counterparts in the developed world, the country will have to grapple with the challenge of supporting a burgeoning elderly population without the financial cushion that comes with high GDP per capita. Thai exports at US$46 billion in first 7 months of 2023

Thai exports amounted to US$46.18 billion between January and July, driven by free trade agreements (FTAs), Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director-general Ronnarong Phoolpipat announced this week. The top five FTAs contributing to this figure were:

  1. ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA): The agreement’s total value was U$16.49 billion, accounting for 72.7% of its utilization. Baby Deer Found Living Among Street Dogs Rescued by WFFT

When locals in a village in Thailand spotted a baby animal running around and barking near packs of street dogs, they immediately realized something was wrong. Despite the baby’s dog-like cries, he definitely wasn’t a dog — he was a muntjac deer who had wandered away from a nearby forest and was now all alone.

As soon as the villagers realized what was happening, they contacted Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) for help. The baby deer, later named Cha Lao, was only a few days old and clearly needed help. He was being chased by street dogs and would bark to try and keep them away. Continued …

Heavy rainfall to hit 43 Thai provinces

Bangkok was listed among the world’s top 10 most polluted cities on Friday as levels of harmful PM2.5 dust soared to 48 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3). IQAir, a website that collects air quality data worldwide, ranked the Thai capital 10th in its global pollution list as of 7am on Friday.

While PM2.5 levels remain at safe levels in other parts of the country, they have risen beyond the safety threshold of 37.5μg/m3 in most areas of Bangkok, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) reported. Continued …

Thailand’s EV initiative: Driving toward a greener future

The Thai government has embarked on an ambitious plan to replace aging government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), in line with its carbon neutrality goal set for 2050. The Thai EV initiative move was prompted by a notification issued by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, encouraging the use of EVs within the government sector.

Srettha’s order, issued via the Secretariat of the Cabinet, has directed the Finance and Energy Ministries to collaborate with the Budget Bureau, the Office of the Council of State, and other relevant sectors to facilitate the procurement process for EVs. Absolute Clean Energy (ACE), a prominent biomass power developer and operator based in Bangkok, is set to see a significant increase in revenue following the selection of its 18 solar power generation ventures to feed the national grid. Donations for Jungle Aid sought Oct 26

To celebrate their 7th anniversary, the Hua Hin Ladies (HHL) are seeking donations of rice on Thursday, Oct. 26, with the donations given to Jungle Aid.

Donations should be dropped off at Cheers Restaurant & Bar any time from 9am until closing. Those attending the HHL party that day can bring donations the evening of Oct. 26.

Canned fish, soap, and toothbrushes and toothpaste are also welcomed. Last year, the event collected 715 kg of rice, 220 cans of fish, and 150 bars of soap.

Domestic gold prices rose to a record high of 34,100 baht per baht weight on Thursday, up 300 baht from a day earlier, as the intensity of the Israel-Hamas conflict has driven up demand for the safe-haven asset, says the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA).

BMW Group Thailand will finalize its plan to build an electric vehicle (EV) factory in Thailand within this year, as the Munich-based premium car manufacturer joins other automakers worldwide in seeking to take advantage of opportunities in the EV industry, which is being strongly backed by the government.

Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor Sets New Investment Targets

Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) has set a new investment target of 500 billion baht (US$13.7 billion) over the next five years.

The government’s new Commerce minister pledged to address all long-standing obstacles within 99 days to better attract foreign investment into the EEC. This includes finalizing a key high-speed railway project that connects the EEC to three major airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and U-tapao. Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.
