Car production suffers sharp downturn

Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

Thai-EU FTA talks unlikely to conclude this year

The Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) admitted yesterday that talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union are unlikely to conclude this year, despite earlier expectations. DTN Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said obstacles remain, with many sensitive and complex issues still under negotiation.

Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT

Young elephant dies in PKK after attack by larger elephant

A young female elephant from the Pa La-U area was found dead in the Huai Sat Yai reservoir after being fatally injured in an attack by a larger elephant, officials confirmed yesterday.

The carcass was discovered in the “Sao Ha” reservoir area in Ban Khon Nom Pattana, Huai Sat Yai, outside the boundaries of Kaeng Krachan National Park. New rules for SIM cards will require facial recognition

The government has announced stricter measures for SIM card registration to combat rising online fraud, following cases in which criminals have exploited SIM-swap scams to steal from victims.

The system will apply to all new mobile subscribers, both prepaid and post-paid, as well as existing users replacing SIM cards while keeping the same number. The technology verifies identity in real time through facial recognition, similar to banking applications. The Ministry of Commerce has issued a 2,000 baht fine to Michelin-starred street food vendor Jay Fai following a pricing complaint by a Thai YouTuber.

Wild Elephants Kill Villager in Khon Kaen

A group of wild elephants entered agricultural land in Si Chomphu District, Khon Kaen Province, and fatally attacked a local villager during the night.

Airports of Thailand revises Suvarnabhumi Airport plan, targets 120 million passengers

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. With the huge outlay on the new track/Hua Hin station, it would’ve been good if some more money had gone into those ancient screeching trains (one is just going by now and the noise is deafening!), and carriages which have seen better days.” – AB

Editor: Patience. The Thai government has limited resources, with all areas of the country clamoring for investment of one kind or another. PKK is just one small piece of the overall equation, and, frankly, other areas could use the money more than this area. And new rolling stock has been purchased, just not for the southern route – yet. (Of course, as the article below illustrates, there always seems to be money for tourism needs.)

Hua Hin has requested more than 400 million baht in funding for the 2026 fiscal year, with a significant portion aimed at upgrading the city’s water supply infrastructure.

      The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours.       Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Prachuap Khiri Khan officials have launched a targeted operation to identify drug users and dealers as part of the Interior Ministry’s “No Drugs No Dealers” policy, aimed at creating drug-free communities.

When a 200-pound Mekong giant catfish turned up at a flooded train station in the Thai city of Chiang Mai last year, it stopped people in their tracks. Seeing a six-to-seven-foot long fish trapped outside a ticket booth was a surreal sight — and it raised an obvious question: Where did it come from?

It certainly did not come from its natural habitat — the Mekong River, which runs through several Southeast Asian countries. The critically endangered species is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish and has become vanishingly rare in the wild in Thailand. Huay Mongkol Temple Mother’s Day draping draws crowd

Crowds gathered at Wat Huay Mongkol Saturday evening to take part in the 12th annual draping ceremony of the giant Luang Pu Thuat statue, held to mark Mother’s Day and honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s 93rd birthday.

More than 1,000 Thai and foreign visitors joined the ceremony, carrying a saffron-yellow cloth measuring 3 meters wide and 247 meters long in a clockwise procession before draping it over the statue, which bears the royal cypher “Sor Kor.” Continued …

South-bound trains resume normal services after Saturday’s derailment

The State Railway of Thailand has resumed its normal south-bound train services after removing three derailed carriages and repairing damaged tracks in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours.     Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Express Train Derails in Kui Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan

An express train traveling from Padang Besar to Bangkok Apiwat Station derailed this morning, leaving nine passengers injured, including a Buddhist monk and a young girl.

A disagreement over the price of fruit has left a foreign tourist in hospital with a serious stab wound after an incident in Patong in the early hours yesterday. Officers arrived to find the victim, from Azerbaijan, lying on the pavement with a deep abdominal wound. He was rushed to Patong Hospital for emergency treatment.

Saengduean Lek Chailert was five years old when she saw an elephant for the first time. It was in chains, lumbering past her home in rural Thailand on its way to help loggers pull trees from the forest. Wat Hua Hin: A historic temple in the heart of the city

Located in the center of town, Wat Hua Hin is the main temple in Hua Hin and a significant landmark for both locals and visitors. Known for its spiritual significance and historic roots, the temple offers a chance to experience local religious traditions and pay respect to one of the area’s most revered monks, Luang Pu Nak.

Originally established in 1896 during the reign of King Rama V, the temple was first known as Wat Amparam. Teenage pregnancy rates prompt action in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Prachuap Khiri Khan authorities have reviewed the province’s teenage pregnancy situation, highlighting the need for continued collaboration between health, education, and social sectors to address the issue.

Figures presented at the Provincial Public Health Office on Wednesday showed that from 2017 to 2025 there were 276 births to mothers under 20 years old, including 19 cases aged 10–14. Thailand’s Meteorological Department reported today that a low-pressure cell covering northern Laos and Vietnam, combined with the prevailing southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf, is expected to bring widespread thundershowers to the country.

Prosecutors indict 23 in Bangkok building collapse

Thai prosecutors yesterday indicted 23 suspects, including the head or Italian-Thai Development Plc, and a Chinese state-owned firm for violations that led to the collapse of the State Audit Office tower in Bangkok during the March 28 earthquake.

The partially built 30-story tower in Chatuchak district was the only building to collapse from tremors emanating from the powerful 7.7 magnitude quake in neighboring Myanmar. At least 95 people — almost all of them construction labourers — were killed in the incident. Continued …

Thai consumer confidence slips further

Thai consumer confidence dropped for a sixth consecutive month in July to its lowest level in 31 months, due mainly to concerns over US tariffs, a lagging economy, and government instability, a survey showed yesterday.

The Thai government plans compensation package to counter Trump’s tariffs, with a proposal for tax cuts in the works, aimed at supporting affected sectors.

According to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, “Some industries, like diamond and gemstone exporters, may be asked by buyers to bear part of the cost burden, such as half of the tariff. Thai elecronics firms consider moves to mitigate US tariffs

The electronics sector, which employs roughly 600,000 people, has started to freeze hiring and study partial manufacturing relocation to countries with lower costs and higher production efficiency than Thailand, in a bid to minimize the impact of US tariffs, says the Electronics & Computer Employers Assn.

Sampan Silapanad, president of the association, said while electronics manufacturers are unlikely to completely pull out of Thailand, partial manufacturing relocation is possible, especially for companies that already have production facilities in several countries, giving them more flexibility. Thai Airways reports 12 billion baht profit in Q2

Thai Airways (THAI) is flying high again, racking up a profit of more than 12 billion baht in the second quarter of 2025, fueled by cheaper jet fuel and strong passenger growth.

The flag carrier and its subsidiaries reported revenue of 44.83 billion baht (excluding one-time items) for the quarter, up 1.9% on last year. 10-year-old Canadian girl drowns off Kata Beach in Phuket

A rescue team yesterday discovered the body of a Canadian girl who had drowned in the sea off Kata Beach in Phuket. Officers from Karon Police Station and rescuers from the Kuson Dham Foundation were called to Kata Beach after the 10-year-old was swept away by waves while swimming with her family.

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours.     Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Mental health problems increasing in Thailand

Some 13.4 million Thais claim to have experienced mental health problems, with people aged 45–59, known as the pre-senior group, reporting the lowest happiness levels, according to the Thai Health Report 2025.

Wild elephants roam 30 kilometers for Thai produce

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has reported that wild elephants are straying beyond their forest habitats in eastern Thailand, traveling over 30 kilometers in search of food.

“These might help to make Hua Hin the “City of Happiness”: Turn the so-called “entertainment” areas (Walking St, Wonderland, Soi 80, etc.) into genuine family oriented bar/restaurant/cafe entertainment areas; keep the “seafood” wooden piers; have a bridge over Phetkasem road in downtown area to enable safe crossing; encourage fair taxi fares, instead of the “cartel” rip-off; stop the encroachment of food places on HH beach; stop dangerous windsurf and jetskis near the shore on HH beach.” – AJB

Heavy rain and strong winds expected across Thailand

Thailand says nearing deal with US to lower 36% import tariff

Thailand is close to an agreement with the United States to lower a threatened 36% tariff on its exports ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline, according to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, who expects trade talks to conclude within days.

The Southeast Asian nation will submit additional clarifications and final details of its proposal to U.S. trade officials in the coming days, Pichai said yesterday. That ancient proverb comes to mind when considering the eagerness of America’s trade partners around the world to negotiate deals with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Four countries already have, with Indonesia the latest to do so – and possibly the first to regret it.

The United States has announced a complex, tiered tariff regime, including a 25% tariff on labor-intensive goods such as textiles and footwear, a 40% tariff on goods suspected of being “transshipped” or having content of Chinese origin, and a 50% tariff on so-called “strategic sectors”, including aluminium, copper, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals. No more changes to minimum wage this year, says minister

The Ministry of Labor has confirmed there will be no further increases to the minimum wage this year, saying the next shift will take place in 2026. Minister Pongkawin Jungrungruangkit said yesterday that two wage adjustments have already taken place this year.

The minimum wage is usually only adjusted once a year, he said after a meeting of the national wage committee, which includes representatives of government, business and labor. Continued …

Sorawong Thienthong, minister of Tourism and Sports, said that despite global tourism facing several challenges in 2024, Thailand remains a leading destination, having welcomed more than 18.08 million international visitors and generated 1.4 trillion baht in revenue so far this year. TasteAtlas, a global platform dedicated to cataloging local cuisines, has ranked Sai Krok Isan and Sai Ua among the top 50 most delicious sausages worldwide. Topping the list is Salsiccia, an Italian sausage made from minced pork, pork fat, salt, pepper, and a variety of spices like fennel seeds, cumin, garlic, and chilli.

Thai villages win big for green tourism push

Thailand’s grassroots tourism projects just bagged six major accolades from the Pacific Asia Travel Assn. (PATA). Deputy government spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan credited the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) and its community network partners for putting Thailand’s local experiences on the global stage.

U Power inaugurates smart battery-swapping station in Thailand

U Power (UCAR) has launched Southeast Asia’s first operational smart battery-swapping station in Phuket. The Thailand station is said to integrate U Power’s UOTTA battery-charging and swapping system technology to improve the transmission of data and station control logic.
