Road safety above profits

The collapse of a launching gantry crane and precast concrete on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon early on Friday morning resulted in the deaths of six construction workers and the injury of nine others. It was a shocking accident on this stretch of road, also known as Highway 35, which is already well known for its high rate of motoring accidents.

Last week’s collapse adds to a grim list of statistics linked to the road. According to the Department of Highways (DoH), 2,242 accidents occurred on the highway during 2018-2023, or 373 cases each year. In those six years, 132 people died, and 1,305 people were injured. Continued …

Thai car market suffering sales slump

Thailand’s auto market has been sluggish this year, with October sales hitting just 37,691 units – the lowest monthly figure in over four years. This decline has been attributed to several factors, including a slow economic recovery and increasingly stringent credit policies from financial institutions dampening consumer purchasing power.

Thawatchai Jungsanguanpornsuk, managing director of Phranakorn Automotive Co., said that loan rejection rates have surged to 70%, particularly impacting pickup trucks, like single-cab and extended-cab models. Strict credit policies have also been exacerbated by falling second-hand car prices leading to a noticeable downturn in the auto market. Continued …

Thai Property Reforms: A Boon or Burden for Foreign Buyers?

Thailand is currently at a crossroads, deliberating potential reforms to its property laws that could significantly alter the landscape for foreign buyers. Prominent figures are advocating for changes to bolster foreign investment in the country’s real estate market, hoping to invigorate economic growth that has remained sluggish in recent years.

At present, Thailand’s property laws are quite restrictive to foreign ownership. Foreigners can own a maximum of 49% of condominium units in any building, ensuring that Thai citizens maintain majority control. Land leases, on the other hand, are typically capped at 30 years, a policy designed to prevent permanent foreign ownership over what is deemed a national asset. Continued …

Destination Thailand Visa: a hugely successful move but with ongoing ambiguities

Nostradamus the seer was very wise not to include the still-evolving DTV in his futuristic predictions. Still, over the course of the last four months, we have learned a lot: Thai embassies and consulates worldwide interpret the published rules and required documentation at their own discretion.

In general, the rules have softened so that applicants can apply not only from their main base, but wherever they are on a visa run. But illegal applications from within Thailand remain a risky non-no. After all, your Thai immigration record will show when you are – or, in fact, are not – resident in the kingdom. Continued …

How Rolled Ice Cream Made Its Way From Thailand To Worldwide Fame

Once upon a time, social media was captivated by Thai rolled ice cream. Unlike your typical scoop, this sweet treat began as a liquid base, spread on a frosty pan, chopped, mixed with fresh fruits or toppings, and rolled into delicate strips right before your eyes. It was a show served in a cup with colorful toppings that quickly became an Instagram sensation.

The rolled ice cream trend, while not new, has been a street favorite in Thailand since its debut in 2009 as “I-TIM-PAD” by Kajitsa Premwimol. Gaining popularity across Thailand and neighboring countries, the concept made its way to the U.S. in 2015, when Premwimol and two friends opened I-CE-NY in New York City. Continued …

Key points on the new funding deal from the UN climate talks agreement

In the wee hours Sunday at the United Nations climate talks, countries from around the world reached an agreement on how rich countries can cough up the funds to support poor countries in the face of climate change.

It’s a far-from-perfect arrangement, with many parties still deeply unsatisfied but some hopeful that the deal will be a step in the right direction. World Resources Institute President and CEO Ani Dasgupta called it “an important down payment toward a safer, more equitable future,” but added that the poorest and most vulnerable nations are “rightfully disappointed that wealthier countries didn’t put more money on the table when billions of people’s lives are at stake.” Continued …

Tariffs ‘could affect 25% of Thai exports to US’

Thai exports to the United States are expected to be the most seriously affected in Southeast Asia based on potential U.S. tariff increases, as Thailand has a significant share of trade with the U.S., according to ttb analytics.

The research house of TMBThanachart Bank (ttb) said that once Donald Trump is sworn in as president, Washington is expected to introduce several aggressive policies, including significant increases in import tariffs. This scenario is expected to affect at least 25% of Thailand’s total exports to the U.S. Continued …

Thai economic and investment landscape under Trump 2.0

The global economy in the first quarter of 2025 will be shaped by three themes, according to Dr. Piyasak Manason of the Investment Strategy Department at INVX-Research Group, at InnovestX Securities: U.S. economic resilience, China’s strategic pivot, and escalating economic tensions following Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Despite showing signs of strength, Manason says, the U.S. economy exhibits some vulnerabilities. While employment growth has slowed significantly, the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book signals a broader economic deceleration. “We expect the Fed to make four interest rate cuts in 2025, potentially bringing the federal funds rate down to 3.4% by year-end,” he says. Thailand-China Visa-Free Policy: Boon or Bane to Tourism?

Expat News is pleased to introduce our newest sponsor:

We are passionate about solar energy. We had our own solar system installed. After a few days, we found it so inspiring we were hooked and decided to start a business. Personally, we would like to see every house on the planet equipped with solar power.

We had been hearing of people with less than positive experiences after having their system installed, so decided we should provide a professional service to ensure people do not experience anything other than excellence in their new venture, whilst making a significant contribution to the environment.

The solar industry is rapidly expanding, largely due to falling prices, along with peoples’ desire to see their monthly electricity bill reduced, as the cost of electricity steadily increases. Couple this with more and more people being aware and taking action against global warming, solar power is one of the obvious ways to help achieve this.

Therefore, it not only becomes a financial saving, but also helps the environment for future generations. A win-win situation for all.

All of our products (Inverters/Panels/Batteries/Hardware) are sourced locally from distributors in Thailand. This facilitates quick and easy backup or replacement, should it ever be needed.

It is hard not to emphasize enough that all of our products are genuine items. Our solar panels are backed up with certificates from the manufacturer. We will never sell counterfeit products. We only install PEA approved equipment.

Chinese buyers in Chiang Mai spark Thai fears for future stability

In a recent surge of property acquisitions in Chiang Mai, Chinese buyers are acquiring homes and other investments, fueling both economic growth and local unease. In the heart of Thailand’s cultural capital, signs in Chinese adorn shops and cafes, marking a stark shift driven largely by Chinese nationals who now invest heavily in the area.

This buying spree, primarily focused in Hang Dong, San Kamphaeng, and San Sai, totaled investments from Chinese buyers of up to 5 billion baht in recent years. Houses priced from 3 million baht have proven particularly appealing, given the comparative affordability against China’s urban property markets, where prices can far exceed $700,000. Continued …

Trump tariffs ‘could cost Thailand Bt160 billion’

Thailand risks missing its economic growth target next year if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump follows through with his pledge to raise tariffs, as it could hurt the country’s exports and weaken the baht, according to a study.

The economy could potentially lose about 160 billion baht ($4.6 billion), shaving off about 0.9 percentage points from a projected 3% gross domestic product growth rate next year, Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, told a briefing on Wednesday in Bangkok. He expressed support for the development of entertainment complexes, nuclear energy, and the strategic use of artificial intelligence (AI) to drive growth.

This neutrality allows Thailand to serve as a platform for dialogue, helping to facilitate agreements between the two economic giants. Continued …

Is the Thai baht at risk with Trump’s return to the White House?

The Thai baht is on track to experience significant vulnerability amid changing political dynamics, particularly due to Donald Trump’s resurgence in the White House. Given Thailand’s high dependency on trade — boasting a trade volume that is 129% of its GDP — the baht’s position is precarious, especially as U.S. monetary policy, under the hawkish Federal Reserve, threatens to further weaken it.

The rise of the dollar, fueled by Trump’s policies intended to enhance U.S. production, poses additional risks for trade-reliant economies, positioning Asian currencies, including the baht, for potential declines. Continued …

10 healthiest Thai food orders, according to a nutritionist

Traditional Thai food is made with flavorful, good-for-you ingredients. (Think: a colorful, vegetable-filled coconut curry made with dozens of health-boosting herbs and spices, served over an energizing pile of rice.) But, as with many cuisines, what you’ll find in most restaurants is a higher-sugar, higher-salt, and higher-fat spin on many Thai dishes.

There’s good news though: So many popular Thai options are still nutritious and filling (or at least can be with some slight order tweaks). After all, Thai cooking typically puts vegetables and other plant-based foods in the spotlight — and many options use coconut milk instead of cream and herbs instead of cheese, says dietitian Amy Gorin, owner of Amy Gorin Nutrition in New York City. Here’s How the Rich History pf Bangkok’s Canals Connects to the Forward-thinking City

Bangkok’s first boundary was described in water. When King Rama I established the capital in 1782, it was on an island his predecessor had made by cutting a canal across a peninsula in the Chao Phraya River. But when I drift through the city today, it’s easy for me to forget this defining relationship between land and water.

Easy to be lost among malls with names that signal their preeminence (Paragon, Centralworld) or their sparkle (Palladium, Platinum). But then, when I cross a bridge over the Saen Saep Canal, my attention is drawn to the brown water and the commuter boat passing beneath me.
