Bank of Thailand aims to quickly unlock frozen accounts

The Bank of Thailand is expediting efforts to unlock the financial transactions of suspended accounts affected by investigations into mules. In collaboration with relevant agencies, the regulator is upgrading its operational processes to better distinguish between mule accounts and legitimate ones, allowing the public to transfer money as usual.

Under the new system, banks will be able to unlock suspended transactions within one day, or as quickly as 3–4 hours per case, compared with the previous 3–7 days. Preparations are under way for the Nakhon Hua Hin Run 2026, which will take place on March 29 next year at Khao Tao Reservoir. The Hua Hin Sports Assn., in collaboration with Hua Hin City Municipality, confirmed the date following a planning meeting held yesterday

The event will feature three distances: a 5-kilometer run, a 10.5-kilometer run and a 3-kilometer VIP fun run. Heavy rain to continue until Sunday

The Th Meteorological Department said heavy downpours are expected across Thailand until Sunday, as a monsoon trough is currently passing through the upper parts of the country, bringing stormy conditions to the lower north, northeast, east and the Central Plains.

The trough’s interaction with southwestern monsoon winds from the Andaman Sea will bring intense showers over the next five days, as well as strong winds that could whip up waves of up to two meters in the lower Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, according to the alert. Continued …

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) plans to seek cabinet approval to build a bridge connecting the southern mainland and Koh Samui in late 2026, with construction to commence two years later.

Foreign residents in Hua Hin and across Thailand are reporting significant inconvenience after Bangkok Bank froze their accounts without prior notice, leaving many unable to access funds for daily expenses, bills, and emergencies.

The stricter identity verification measures, which began intensifying in May 2025, follow regulatory measures from the Bank of Thailand to curb financial fraud, money laundering, and so-called “mule” accounts used in scams. Local residents in the Nong Kae community of Hua Hin are calling for safer and more convenient ways to cross the railway at Soi 106 after officials confirmed an underpass cannot be built at the site.

On Friday, the mayor of Hua Hin City Municipality assigned Natthawan Mitdee, the mayor’s secretary, along with City Council President Cheep Suksri, council member Sorayut Premkamolnet, the director of the engineering office, and relevant officials to meet with representatives from the State Railway of Thailand, the head of the Nong Kae community, and local residents. Truck overturns on Phetkasem Road spilling 5 million meth pills

A lorry carrying millions of methamphetamine tablets crashed after a tire burst, scattering its illicit cargo across a stretch of Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) in Kui Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The driver fled the scene.

The crash occurred at around 7.30 am yesterday near Ban Samrong, Sam Krathai subdistrict. The Bhumjaithai Party held the royal command ceremony in which Anutin Charnvirakul, party leader and MP on the party-list system, was formally appointed as the 32nd prime minister of Thailand yesterday.

Arphat Sukanan, secretary-general of the House of Representatives, brought the royal command appointing the prime minister to the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters on Phaholyothin Road. For much of the last 50 years, high-income countries have consumed massive amounts of plastic and trash and given little thought to what would become of it. Police and local officials raided a pool villa in Cha-am, 52 young men and women were allegedly holding a drug-fueled party in the early hours yesterday.

The joint operation, led by Provincial Police Region 7 officers, Cha-am police, and district officials, uncovered a large gathering aged between 16 and 28. Police have arrested members of the infamous “Sergeant M16” drug trafficking network, a syndicate accused of moving more than 10 million methamphetamine pills, during a raid on a pool villa in Hua Hin.

The operation, led by Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau investigators and Romsai police, resulted in the capture of four high-value suspects, each carrying a government-issued bounty of 1.5 million baht. Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT

Young elephant dies in PKK after attack by larger elephant

A young female elephant from the Pa La-U area was found dead in the Huai Sat Yai reservoir after being fatally injured in an attack by a larger elephant, officials confirmed yesterday.

The carcass was discovered in the “Sao Ha” reservoir area in Ban Khon Nom Pattana, Huai Sat Yai, outside the boundaries of Kaeng Krachan National Park.
