Issara United to launch THB1.7-billion Sasa Hua Hin condo project in Hua Hin

Issara United, a joint venture between SET-listed developer Charn Issara Development and Thai conglomerate Saha Group, will launch a new condo project in Hua Hin worth 1.7 billion baht to capitalize on the robust demand for vacation homes.

The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok has warned Thai media outlets about coverage of Taiwan, saying it could damage the friendship between the people of China and Thailand. In an angry tone, the diplomatic mission strongly criticized as “nonsense” and “fallacies” the pronouncements of the Taiwanese foreign minister in an interview given in Taipei on Nov. 1 to the TV station Thai PBS, which was broadcast on Nov. 3.

Thai Government Plans to Establish Clean Drinking Tap Water

Anutin Charnvirakul, deputy prime minister, has delegated that both Thai metropolitan and regional officials authorized that electric or water bill payments could be postponed for 3 months if the electric or water bills were less than 300 and 150 baht each month, respectively.

Dengue fever infections increase by about 300% this year

The number of dengue fever patients in Thailand recorded between Jan. 1 and Nov. 1 was more than 123,000, which is an increase of nearly 300% compared to last year.

Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, acting director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said that, of the 123,000 people infected, 139 have died and most were in the 25-34 age group. Continued …

Electricity tariffs: Potential 6 baht/unit increase expected next year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed three options for determining electricity tariffs for the first quarter of next year. The electricity tariffs could potentially increase to a peak of 6 baht per unit. Air Pollution Soars Across Most Of Bangkok

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday satellite data appearing on its “Dust Check” application showed that dangerous particles in the air known as PM 2.5 had soared in 48 of 50 Bangkok districts and exceeded the red code, which is 90 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in 34 of them.

According to Thailand’s color-coded air-pollution-warning system, green means moderate or no risk at all; yellow means the air is unhealthy for those suffering from respiratory illnesses, with children and the elderly urged to limit time spent outdoors; orange means it’s unhealthy for all; and red means hazardous. Thai Anti-Trafficking In Persons (ATP) officers confiscated E-cigarettes, E-liquids, and other equipment, a total of 60,500 units worth over 10 million Baht, at a private distribution center in Bang Pa-in, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced his government’s intention to promote Thailand as a global festival destination, in the hopes of boosting tourism across the country and attracting more foreign tourists over the New Year period.

Srettha announced that Thailand will host two major events, namely the “Thailand Winter Festival”, which consists of 3,000 festivals and local events across the country, and the “Colorful Bangkok Winter Festival 2023”, which includes 200 festivals and events in the capital. Van Overturns In Chiang Mai, Killing 2 Foreigners, Injuring 10

Yesterday, a tourist van traveling from Chiang Mai to Pai overturned on the Chiang Mai-Pai route, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they found two foreign tourists dead outside the vehicle.

Thai baht hits new low against US dollar amid gold price drop

The 2023 financial year has seen the Thai baht rank as one of the region’s poorest performing currencies, depreciating to a low of 37.14 to the U.S. dollar on Tuesday – a level not seen since November of the previous year.

Are economic danger signals flashing for both Thailand and the world?

On Tuesday, PM Srettha Thavisin pointed to the declining baht, saying that the Bank of Thailand was monitoring the situation and that it would help boost Thai exports and tourism. The baht has fallen 7% this year but is still higher than the rates set in October 2022 with Bangkok analysts suggesting that although it may fall to ฿37.55 to the dollar in the weeks ahead, but then recover with the high season for foreign tourism, to anywhere between ฿35 and ฿36 by the end of 2023.

However, could this year be different? In the last week alone, Thailand’s 10-year bond yields have risen 4.57% amid a similar surge in the United States, as markets have become wary of risk. This will make the government’s contentious expansionary stimulus plans for the economy more expensive in a darkening economic environment, with an implosion of the Chinese economy and market skepticism about Pheu Thai’s expansionary policies at a time when world economic danger signals are flashing. Man with four wives suspected of murdering five of his 10 children

Police in the Bang Khen area of Bangkok this week were investigating another possible serial killer after it emerged that a 46-year-old man with four wives and a history of violent domestic abuse, but who claims mental illness, may have murdered five of his 10 children in the period from 2012 up to this month when he allegedly murdered his two-year-old daughter.

Songsak Songsaeng was committed to prison on Friday when he appeared in court on multiple charges linked with the death of his daughter, while police are still investigating the death of four of his sons from 2012 to 2017. Continued …

Suspected killer’s third wife arrested on murder charges relating to 4 infant boys

The third wife of the suspected serial killer, 46-year-old Songsak Songsaeng, was arrested by police on Friday on charges including murder. She appeared before the Criminal Court on Saturday in connection with the deaths of four infants between 2013 and 2018.

Jessada Meepian is the 33-year-old mother of a 12-year-old girl, Wiyada, the only surviving child out of five from the relationship between the pair who, it was revealed, on Friday, alerted authorities and activists to the murder of a two-year-old girl at the hands of Songsak and his fourth wife Sunan Nahuanin, the mother of the baby girl. ‘Big Joke’ accused of being involved in online gambling operation

Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) officers raided the home of Royal Thai Police (RTP) Deputy Commissioner Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn this morning over allegations of his involvement in an online gambling operation. Big Joke denied the allegation and refused to allow officers to enter his home.

M&T Computer moving, Hua Hin Mall closing

Expat News has learned that Hua Hin Mall, located just north of the municipal office on Phetkasem Road, will be closing by December. Intown residents are most familiar with the grocery store, which generally has lower prices than Makro, or with the computer repair shop.

Many of the tenants have already moved out, with M&T Computer planning to relocate by Oct. 1 across from the Malee shopping center at 5/233 Soi Village, Khlong Chonprathan Road. M&T is where many people go for computer repairs and equipment. They can be reached at 089-174-0589 or 094-985-9947.

No word yet on where, of if, the grocery or the other stores at the mall will relocate.

New “electrical” blue tarantula species found in Thailand

Entomologists in Thailand have been stunned by an electrifying new species of tarantula found in the southern part of the country.

The spider, known as the Chilobrachys natanicharum, has a “blue-violet hue resembling the color of electrical sparks,” researchers from the Entomology Museum at Khon Kaen University and the Natural History Museum of the National Science Museum said in a paper announcing the find. Mrigadayavan Palace 3-day reopening Oct 13-15

The historic Mrigadayavan Palace in Cha Am will temporarily reopen to the public for three days Oct. 13-15. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024

The can be viewed Oct. 13 from 1:30-4:30 pm, and on Oct. 14-15 from 9am-4:30 pm.

Admission fees are as follows:

  • Adults (both Thai nationals and foreigners: 90 baht per person
  • Higher education students and teachers: 60 baht per person
  • High school students and their teachers: 30 baht per person
  • Elementary school and kindergarten students, young children, teachers, priests, monks, the elderly, and people with special needs are encouraged to make a donation.

Navy Confirms Retrieving HTMS Sukhothai From Sea Off PKK

The Navy yesterday confirmed it is going ahead with its project to retrieve a sunken corvette from the Gulf of Thailand sea floor, while categorically dismissing allegations of non-transparency over it.

Navy spokesman Adm. Pokkhrong Monthatpalin said the Navy Fleet based at Sattahip will certainly have the sunken HTMS 442 Sukhothai retrieved by a private firm from the bottom of the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan, though six bidders had earlier failed to meet specifications under the 200-million-baht project’s terms of reference. Late-night drive in Bangkok takes a twist with surprise python visit

A woman’s late-night drive took a slithery turn when a python surprised her by emerging from the engine compartment after she returned from a meal. At around 1am today, emergency services from the Thung Mahamek Fire Station were called to a parking lot in front of a convenience store in the Yan Nawa district of Bangkok.

The woman had been driving back from a meal with friends at Lang Linchi Road when the incident occurred. The driver, and identified only as Monchanapath, was shocked to see a python’s head emerge from the front of her black Mazda2 car. Continued …

Cabinet takes steps to ease cost of living, sets dates for visa-free scheme

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin set up a committee on Tuesday to oversee the implementation of his government’s much-publicized 10,000 baht digital wallet scheme. The committee will be chaired by the premier himself in his capacity as finance minister, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said.

In the policy statement delivered to Parliament on Monday, the Pheu Thai-led coalition had stated that the 10,000 baht digital wallet handout would not be a burden on the country’s public debt and would adhere to stringent financial discipline. Continued …

Digital wallet scheme could take a decade to pay off, economists warn

The government’s digital wallet scheme will most likely help Thailand’s GDP reach 6% next year, but the effect will be short-lived and will saddle the country with a massive amount of public debt for nearly a decade, Siam Commercial Bank’s Economic Intelligence Center (EIC) warned on Wednesday.

Thailand approves visa-free entry for 5 months for Chinese

Thailand’s new government Wednesday approved a measure granting temporary visa-free entry to Chinese tourists, signaling that the recovery of the country’s tourism industry is a top economic priority.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said the visa exemption, which will also apply to visitors from the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan, will be effective from Sept. 25 until Feb. 29 next year. Nearly 18.5 million foreign tourists have visited Thailand so far this year, with the Malaysians leading the way. Of the total number of foreign tourists to visit the kingdom this year, 3 million were Malaysian.

Foreign Tourists Marvel as 52 Baby Turtles Emerge on Koh Tao

Yesterday, in Surat Thani province, members of the Turtle Conservation Assn. on Koh Pha Ngan received a report from staff at the Koh Tao Resort, Nai Thon Beach, Koh Tao, that the first baby turtles from Mother Thongdee’s second nest had emerged from their eggs since Monday morning from a total of three nests.

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets

Can I drink tap water in Hua Hin?

The tap water source for Hua Hin comes from the Pranburi Dam and Phetburi Dam. The water from the dams is treated at water-treatment plants before it is pumped into the tap water distribution system.

There are five water-treatment plants in Hua Hin and they all use a similar process to treat the water. The water is first filtered to remove sediment and other large particles. It is then disinfected with chlorine to kill harmful bacteria and viruses before it enters the tap water distributed in Hua Hin. Continued …

Intense waves, coupled with rising sea levels, caused severe damage to a cement road along Hua Hin beach in Satun province. The wave damage disrupted the lives of 2,500 households in 10 villages, causing transportation difficulties. Local officials have swiftly initiated an assessment of the damage and marked hazardous areas.

Following the distress signal from local leaders about the powerful sea wave hitting the shore, Jamras Hongsai, the head of the La-ngu subdistrict administrative organization, accompanied by local disaster prevention and mitigation officials, promptly arrived at the scene. Hua Hin-Pattaya bus service twice a day

Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets
