The governments of Thailand and China on Friday together held a ceremony to give New Year’s blessings to all Chinese nationals and descendants worldwide, and officially launched the Chinese New Year Festival in Thailand.

8-year-old becomes the youngest to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand

Water sports history was written yesterday when eight-year-old Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen became the youngest to windsurf 107 kilometers (66 miles) across the Gulf of Thailand – a claim to fame he most wanted as a gift for his ninth birthday this coming Sunday. It was a case of “third time lucky” for Shane, whose two previous attempts at the epic crossing were scuppered by poor wind conditions.

The boy wonder achieved his kite foil crossing in just four hours and 10 minutes – the fastest time yet for windsurfers of any age. He even beat the four hours and 45 minutes crossing time recorded by a jetskier. Thailand’s wee windsurfing wizard was flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and landed at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Unsafe levels of smog cover upper Thailand

 

Forty-eight from all 77 provinces, especially those in the northeast, experienced hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported at 10am that 13 provinces were blanketed by red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.8 to 97.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Young organ donor saves lives after death in Hua Hin

Doctors from Hua Hin Hospital and the Thai Red Cross Society have posthumously honored a 13-year-old patient for donating organs following his tragic death.

Patcharaphon Srilert, 13, from Hua Hin recently passed away from a brain aneurysm, with his family choosing to donate his organs to assist numerous patients awaiting treatment. 44.3% jump in spending for inbound Chinese New Year bookings

Data from leading global travel service provider Trip.com Group has revealed that Thailand will see an increase of 44.3% in total trip expenditure for inbound bookings when comparing this year’s Chinese New Year (CNY) festive period with 2023’s CNY period, with expenditure for outbound travelers increasing by 70.8%.

Lifting of afternoon alcohol sales ban being considered

The Thai government is considering lifting the afternoon prohibition on alcohol sales in a bid to boost its tourism industry. Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew is planning to ask the government’s alcohol control committee to discuss the appeal by the Thai Alcohol Beverage Business Assn. (TABBA) to revoke the rule that restricts alcohol sales between 2pm and 5pm.

Thai boy, 8, to cross Gulf of Thailand on a kite foil from Pattaya to Hua Hin

Thanawat “Shane” Promwen, 8 years old, started his adventure across the Gulf of Thailand this morning, embarking on a journey of 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Pattaya to Pak Nam Pran, in the Hua Hin area, setting the record for being the youngest child ever to achieve this goal. by crossing with kite foil.

Shane has been making waves in the kite and wing foilling world since the age of 3, and his latest adventure marks a big step forward. In preparation for international competition in 2024. At present, he is too young to compete and has to rely on special invitations to participate in adult competitions.

Fifty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with hazardous levels of ultra-fine dust on Monday morning, most of them in the central plains, the north and the northeast.

The public has been advised to wear N95 masks whenever they go outside on Sunday as air pollution in Bangkok remains high, with PM2.5 levels reaching unhealthy levels.

Wild gaurs in rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima

Deadly explosion at fireworks factory leaves all 23 workers dead in Suphanburi

All the 23 workers in a fireworks factory in Suphanburi province were killed in a deadly explosion on Wednesday afternoon, local authorities said. Police and local officials said the accident happened at 3.30pm at the factory in Ban Khoi Ngam or Moo 3 village in Tambon Sala Khao of Muang district.

Rangers in a Phetchabun wildlife sanctuary rescued a baby elephant stuck in a pool of mud and successfully returned it to its herd last week. Ronnarat Sirimakorn, chief of Phetchabun’s Tat Mok National Park, said on Wednesday that a team of rangers spotted the baby elephant stuck in a dry creek at 2pm last Thursday.

Thailand targets 23.1 million MICE visitors in fiscal 2024

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has set a target to attract a minimum of 23.1 million meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) visitors by fiscal 2024. Thai air force to battle surging fine dust pollution crisis

With fine dust pollution surging to alarming levels in Thailand, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has tasked the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) with spearheading the nation’s countermeasures. Air Force Chief, ACM Phanpakdee Pattanakul, confirmed the directive on Tuesday.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) revealed that the provinces of Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon are presently grappling with high levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (PM2.5). Electricity bills in Thailand are unlikely to be trimmed from the existing rate, as the power tariff, which is used to calculate the bills, is expected to stay in a range of 4.2-4.25 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), says Khomgrich Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC).

Like many locations in Thailand, Hua Hin has seen a significant rise in air pollution, as levels of PM 2.5, the fine particulate matter known for its adverse health effects, have reached concerning levels over the last 24 hours.

We have just helped rescue 15 elderly and sick tigers and leopards from a condemned breeding mill in Thailand and likely helped save them from death. But there are up to 15 critically endangered Indo-Chinese leopards and sick and elderly tigers that still need rescue right now or face life in a zoo (if they survive). These are wild creatures who have lived chained and beaten their entire lives.

Last year, we told you that a horror big-cat breeding facility in Thailand had been shut down, and its resident cats were in urgent need of relocation to our partner sanctuary. We were there in December when the first 15 rescued big cats arrived at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT). Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) recently uncovered a significant privacy breach involving 5,261 organizations. Among these, a majority of 4,886 were government agencies from both central and local sectors. The lapse in data protection was observed between Nov. 9 of the previous year and Jan. 12.

The violations were primarily due to excessively revealing personal data on various websites and a noticeable absence of necessary security measures to safeguard this private information. Electricity price support has cost PTT Bt10.8 billion in lost revenue

State-owned oil and gas giant PTT Plc has said that that its support measures to control electricity prices have cost the company 10.8 billion baht in lost revenue.

Thai Tourism Agencies Get Huge Budget Boost

Led by a record 60% increase in the 2023/24 fiscal year budget of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Thai government is positioning the tourism industry as “the primary engine of economic growth” this year. However, those hopes are likely to be dashed in the event of a wider conflict in the Middle East.

A detailed analysis of the Thai budget bill, currently going through Parliament, shows that the budget allocation for the TAT is up from 3,258 million baht in fiscal year 2022/23 (beginning in October) to 5,201 million baht in fiscal year 2023/24, the largest percentage increase of any government agency. In the same period, the budget allocation for the Thai Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is up from 637 million baht to 826 million baht and the Department of Tourism in the Ministry of Tourism and Sports up from 1,753 million baht to 1,896 million baht.
