Thailand must adapt to meet its unique demographic challenge

Thailand is facing a unique demographic problem unlike other aging countries in northeast Asia and Europe. The country is growing old before it attains economic prosperity, a situation pointed out by a recent article in The Economist.

Unlike their counterparts in the developed world, the country will have to grapple with the challenge of supporting a burgeoning elderly population without the financial cushion that comes with high GDP per capita. Thailand had a GDP per person of just $7,000 in 2021, while 14% of its population was already 65 or over, setting it on course for a demographic dilemma that could have far-reaching implications for its socio-economic fabric. We are seeing more of the type of diplomacy the new prime minister is engaging abroad and there is valid cause to be concerned. PM Srettha Thavisin was in Beijing a few days ago as part of the gathering of leaders from 130 nations attending China’s 10th anniversary of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

It was there that the new PM, who was on a four-day visit to China, spoke at a Thai Board of Investment (BOI)-organized forum in Beijing in front of many potential Chinese investors and verbally degraded Thailand’s stature by describing China as Thailand’s “elder brother.” Continued …

Thai exports at US$46 billion in first 7 months of 2023

Thai exports amounted to US$46.18 billion between January and July, driven by free trade agreements (FTAs), Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director-general Ronnarong Phoolpipat announced this week. The top five FTAs contributing to this figure were:

  1. ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA): The agreement’s total value was U$16.49 billion, accounting for 72.7% of its utilization. Major exports under this agreement included automobiles for transportation (weighing less than 5 tons), sugar, petroleum oils, oils from bituminous minerals, and cars for personal transportation (1,500 – 2,500 cc). Exports unexpectedly rise for 2nd straight month

Thailand’s customs-based exports unexpectedly increased 2.1% in September from a year earlier, helped by higher shipments of rice and farm products, the commerce ministry said today, despite sluggish global demand.

The reading compared with a forecast for a 1.75% year-on-year drop for September in a Reuters poll, and followed August’s 2.6% increase. Continued …

Thai auto exports threatened by Israel-Hamas conflict

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is closely monitoring the Israel-Hamas conflict for fear that if the war expands to include other neighboring Arab nations, Thai vehicle exports could be affected late this year.

Vehicles are the leading Thai exports to Israel in terms of value, at US$243 million per year. In the first eight months of this year (Jan.-Aug.), Thailand exported $124 million worth of vehicles and auto parts to Israel, representing 1% of total Thai auto exports. Continued …

The Royal Thai Police is turning to elephant patrols in response to a directive by PM Srettha Thavisin to upgrade security for tourists in Thailand. It comes with visitor numbers from China down substantially in October following the Paragon Shopping Center shooting in the Pathum Wan area of Bangkok on Oct. 3.

Visa-Free Visits for Russian Tourists Extended Nov 1

Starting on Nov. 1, Thailand will allow Russian tourists to stay visa-free for up to 90 days. The move comes as tourists from the country have had increasingly few options for travel, given Moscow’s war on Ukraine, the impact of sanctions, travel restrictions, and a weakening ruble.

Nongbua Lamphu native, Wiphawadee “Jaem” Vannachai, 40, became an overnight sensation on social media after a clip recording her heroic efforts to rescue Thai workers from Israeli war zones went viral.

Bangkok’s electric train flat fare drops to 20 baht, ridership soars by 90%

A surge of nearly 90% in ridership was recorded on Bangkok’s Red and Purple electric train lines Monday, following the introduction of a 20-baht flat fare.

State revenue outperforms target by 6.9%

For the first 11 months of fiscal 2023, government revenue exceeded its target by 6.9%, or 153 billion baht, achieving a treasury balance of 300 billion baht at the end of August, said Fiscal Policy Office Director-general Pornchai Thiraveja.

Pornchai said the government collected net revenue of 2.36 trillion baht for the first 11 months of fiscal 2023 (October 2022 to August 2023), an increase of 6.9%, an improvement on 4.9% growth recorded in the same period last year. Continued …

World’s biggest eyewear company opens new plant in Rayong

EssilorLuxottica, the world’s leading eyewear producer, officially opened a new plant in Rayong on Tuesday. The integrated ophthalmic lenses and frames manufacturing plant is part of the company’s 16-billion-baht investment to turn Thailand into its Southeast Asia manufacturing hub. The new factory is expected to create 6,000 jobs.

Hotels unable to improve room rates

Hotels in major destinations overall have been unable to improve the average daily room rate during the high season, due to the slow rebound of the mass market, according to the Thai Hotels Assn. (THA).

Sanpech Supabowornsthian, president of THA’s eastern chapter, said hotels in Pattaya and the eastern region previously wanted to offer rooms at the same rate as 2019’s level during the high season after seeing a healthy rebound in international tourism. Continued …

Petrol prices to drop by 2.50 baht as new year gift

The deputy prime minister and minister of energy announced plans to reduce petrol prices by 2.50 baht per liter as a new year’s gift to the Thai people. The minister, Peeraphan Saleerathaviphak, also revealed the establishment of an official committee to investigate fuel pricing.

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Western retirees in Thailand feeling rather insecure

Premier Srettha Thavisin’s new Pheu Thai-led administration has already seen massive investment in Thailand’s short-term visa programs. The mass market Chinese tourists are now 30 days visa-free, at least until February 2024, and appear to have no problem obtaining a further month at immigration if wished.

The sports and tourism ministry is planning to spend 600 million baht in the next financial year to promote marketing campaigns abroad for tourism. Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. Hua Hin municipality outlines plans for future development

Hua Hin municipality commemorated its 86th anniversary with a merit-making ceremony on Monday. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul led the ceremony, which was overseen by Phra Kru Wichitthamvibhat, the chief of Hua Hin District and the abbot of Wat Busayabunpot.

Two fitness centers open in Hin Lek Fai

On Saturday, Hua Hin welcomed two new fitness centers – Elite Fight Club Hua Hin and CrossFit Hua Hin.

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

Five other people were also injured, three of whom are being treated at Chulalongkorn Hospital, with two in a serious condition. The two others are being treated at the Police General and Bangkok Christian hospitals. Continued …

PM Puts Weapon Systems Procurement On Hold

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday suspended the procurement of any weapon systems during fiscal 2024, so that, he said, the government’s annual budget could be spent for optimum use.

13 Electric Poles Collapse During Installation, 12 Injuries, 2 Deaths

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A rescue squad was urgently dispatched to aid the injured and send them to nearby hospitals.

A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint.

Giant python crashes lunchtime in Yala

A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Weakening baht boosts Thailand’s exports and tourism

Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, pointed out yesterday that the weakening baht, despite its potential negative impact on energy import costs, is actually proving to be a boon for the country’s exports and tourism. The baht had earlier plummeted to an 11-month low against the U.S. dollar, trading at 37.095.

According to Srettha, who also holds the finance minister portfolio, this depreciation isn’t entirely detrimental. It has a favorable effect on the country’s exports and tourism sectors – key contributors to Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP). Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

The tourism confidence index in Thailand has taken a hit, with figures sliding from 91 in the same period of 2019 to 69 in the third quarter of this year, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).

The third quarter’s number also represents a decline from 74 and 72 recorded in the first and second quarters of 2021, respectively. US dollar surge hits Asian currencies: Thai baht suffers

Asian currencies experienced a dip today, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah bearing the brunt of the losses. This was mainly due to the rising strength of the U.S. dollar, bolstered by robust economic indicators and the threat of inflation from the Federal Reserve, which have pushed U.S. bond yields to a 16-year peak.

Suspected killer’s third wife arrested on murder charges relating to 4 infant boys

The third wife of the suspected serial killer, 46-year-old Songsak Songsaeng, was arrested by police on Friday on charges including murder. She appeared before the Criminal Court on Saturday in connection with the deaths of four infants between 2013 and 2018.

Jessada Meepian is the 33-year-old mother of a 12-year-old girl, Wiyada, the only surviving child out of five from the relationship between the pair who, it was revealed, on Friday, alerted authorities and activists to the murder of a two-year-old girl at the hands of Songsak and his fourth wife Sunan Nahuanin, the mother of the baby girl. M&T Computer moving, Hua Hin Mall closing

Expat News has learned that Hua Hin Mall, located just north of the municipal office on Phetkasem Road, will be closing by December. Intown residents are most familiar with the grocery store, which generally has lower prices than Makro, or with the computer repair shop.

Many of the tenants have already moved out, with M&T Computer planning to relocate by Oct. 1 across from the Malee shopping center at 5/233 Soi Village, Khlong Chonprathan Road. M&T is where many people go for computer repairs and equipment. They can be reached at 089-174-0589 or 094-985-9947.

No word yet on where, of if, the grocery or the other stores at the mall will relocate.

New “electrical” blue tarantula species found in Thailand

Entomologists in Thailand have been stunned by an electrifying new species of tarantula found in the southern part of the country.

The spider, known as the Chilobrachys natanicharum, has a “blue-violet hue resembling the color of electrical sparks,” researchers from the Entomology Museum at Khon Kaen University and the Natural History Museum of the National Science Museum said in a paper announcing the find. Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.
