Walk on Hua Hin beach sparks ‘trash art’ effort

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Jarupatcha Achavasmit, a lecturer at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design at King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, spent her time in Hua Hin. While walking along the beaches, she noticed that the waves were washing up trash.

She assumed that it was the way the sea returned unwanted items to humans. She felt sorry for the sea and decided to help it by turning the trash it spat back at humans into art pieces. Continued …

Deluge expected with two storms on radar

Thailand is expected to face two storms from September to October, bringing heavy rainfall across various regions, according to the Meteorological Department. Thanasit Iam-ananchai, the department’s deputy chief, said two direct storms are forecast to affect the country during these two months.

He said there is no storm affecting Thailand at the moment and persistent rainfall causing runoff and flooding in the northern region and the upper part of the northeastern region is due to the monsoon weather system. Continued …

Phuket’s Big Buddha Foundation under fire for deadly landslide

The Phuket Big Buddha Foundation faces serious allegations from the Forest Department involving land encroachment, after a tragic mudslide last week at Khao Nak Kerd claimed 13 lives, mostly Myanmar nationals.

Officials from various local authorities, including the Forest Department and Phuket Buddhism Office, recently inspected the Big Buddha site to ascertain if it complied with the 2.4-hectare land limit established by the Forest Department. Using GPS technology, they discovered the site extends over 3.2 hectares, far exceeding the permitted area. This extra space reportedly accommodates parking, restrooms, and other amenities. Thai women track down alleged molester, call police

In a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns about the safety of ride-sharing services, a Bolt driver was arrested for molesting two young women on separate occasions. The suspect, identified as Seksan S, 47, was taken into custody by police from Banglamung Police Station on Aug. 27.

The first victim, a 15-year-old girl referred to as Miss Am, recounted her ordeal to the media. On Aug. 25 around 4:30 a.m., she called a white Toyota Vios through the Bolt app. She requested a ride from Soi 17, Pattaya Second Road, to her destination in Soi Nong Ket Yai. Two more deaths from moonshine poisoning

Two more deaths have taken the toll in Bangkok’s moonshine methanol scare to six, as investigators widen their search for those producing and selling the deadly rotgut beyond the city’s northern suburbs.

Dr. Pairoj Surattanawanich, deputy director-general of the Department of Medical Services, said on Wednesday that two more drinkers had died from the effects of methanol intoxication on Tuesday. One had died in hospital after earlier being resuscitated, and the other died at home. Continued …

20,000 counterfeit items discovered in Bangkok mall raid

Severe floods in many Thai provinces have resulted in tourism losses worth 491 million baht, while tourism expenditure is expected to contract by 200 million baht.

Thailand is gearing up for a significant influx of South Korean tourists during the upcoming six-day Chuseok holiday, hoping to hit a record high of 2 million Korean visitors by the year’s end. UK warns travelers not to smuggle pot into country

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned travelers to the United Kingdom from Thailand, Canada and the United States that any attempt to bring cannabis into the country could see them sent to jail after a huge increase in arrests was reported.

According to the British embassy in Bangkok, 378 air passengers have been arrested for smuggling cannabis, and an estimated 15 tons of the drug has been detected and seized at UK airports so far this year. Electricity bills to remain unchanged at 4.18 baht per unit

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) resolved on Thursday to keep the fuel tariff (FT) for electricity unchanged at 39.72 satang for September to December, which will keep electricity capped at 4.18 baht per unit.

Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, the commission’s secretary-general, said the move to keep the FT unchanged was in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on July 23 to retain the ceiling on power bills as part of the government’s bid to help ease people’s financial burdens. Continued …

Power tariff set to fall by early 2025

The power tariff, which will be capped at 4.18 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit) to maintain electricity prices until the end of this year, is likely to decrease early next year, as global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is thought to be decreasing, which would result in lower gas prices.

Thais ground overseas travel plans amid squeeze on spending power

Thailand’s outbound travel market is experiencing a slowdown in the second half of this year due to a decline in consumer spending power, according to Charoen Wangananont, president and board committee member of the Thai Travel Agents Assn. (TTAA).

In an interview, Charoen explained that economic uncertainties had prompted many Thais to postpone overseas travel plans to avoid additional expenses during the downturn. Thailand Eases Regulations for Coastal Hotels

The government includes “illegal hotels” in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga in the legal system and expects 2,500 more legal hotel rooms. Hotels with no more than 49 rooms do not have to carry out an environmental impact assessment (IEE).

This will allow hotels near the coast to operate legally without having to demolish or alter their buildings to comply with the new regulations, as these hotels were built before the ministerial order was announced. Continued …

Chinese Tourist Killed by Falling Tree in Chiang Mai

In a tragic accident in Chiang Mai, a Chinese tourist lost her life, and another was injured when a tree fell on them while they were ziplining. The incident occurred around noon in Village 2, Thep Sadet subdistrict, Doi Saket District. The Erawan Rescue Center swiftly dispatched emergency services to the scene.

The couple, Liu Yang, 46, and Jing Chen, 44, from China, were crossing a suspension bridge after enjoying a ziplining adventure. Body of missing Dutch teen recovered from Dragon Crest Mountain in Krabi

The body of a missing Dutch teenager was discovered on Thursday, a day after he was reported missing, on “Dragon Crest Mountain,” a popular tourist attraction on Phi Phi Islands, Krabi province.

Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

The agricultural drones project aimed at improving productivity has secured participation from 86 communities across 22 provinces in the first batch, a statement released by Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency said on Wednesday.

Little by little, the canopy of branches and interlocking leaves closes overhead as our vehicle rollicks deeper into the plantation. Rail tunnel in Saraburi closed within hours of opening

The State Railway of Thailand ( SRT ) stopped services through Phasadet tunnel, the longest railway tunnel in Thailand at 5.2km, yesterday within hours of its opening. The decision was taken after videos of dust blowing into carriages were posted online.

More work ahead on marijuana change

The government’s backtracking from its plan to relist cannabis as a narcotic drug is a step in the right direction. The reversal was ordered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin just days before a meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB).

Cannabis advocates praised the decision, ending a 10-day protest by advocacy group Writing Thailand’s Cannabis Future near Government House. Thailand’s instant coffee market is expected to grow by 5% this year as Nescafé Thailand plans to allocate 620 million baht for brand communication advertising.

Jojo Dela Cruz, business executive officer of Nestlé (Thai) Ltd.’s coffee and creamer business unit, said that in this year’s first quarter the value of the country’s instant coffee market was 5.7 billion baht, up 5% when compared with the corresponding period last year, while the value of the ready-to-drink coffee market reached 3.8 billion baht, up 10% from the corresponding period last year. People were being invited to experience romantic vibes in the rainy season on a special Kiha 183 tourism train, which will make 16 trips on seven routes in August and September. Thailand saw a surge in investment project proposals, led by electrical appliances and electronics, during the first half of 2024, with total proposals soaring by 64% year-on-year, worth 458 billion baht, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Thailand cuts 2024 car manufacturing target to 1.7 million

Months-long sluggish car sales have caused the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) to reduce its car manufacturing target for 2024 to 1.7 million units, down from 1.9 million units.

New Post-Graduate Visa for Foreign Students Implemented

Starting July 15, the Thai government has implemented the Non-Ed Plus Visa, which will allow foreign students studying bachelor’s degree level or above to extend their stay in Thailand for one year after graduation to give them time to find employment, travel, participate in other similar activities, or apply for a new type of visa once employed.

More macaques captured in Lop Buri

Thirty-eight long-tailed  macaques were captured yesterday in a new round of relocations, jointly launched by the Lop Buri municipal administration and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, to contain the population of the monkeys and to reduce the disturbance they cause.

The current operation will last 10 days, with an aim to capture up to 500 macaques for relocation to a shelter. A big cage has been placed near the old building of the waterworks office, in which to keep the captured primates during the 10-day operation before relocation. Continued … 

Residents squeal in protest as pig farm stinks up Chon Buri canal

Hundreds of residents in Chon Buri’s Phanat Nikhom district gathered yesterday to protest against a major pig farm, accusing it of polluting a local canal and causing a persistent foul odor for several years. The demonstration saw villagers from Village 6, Village 9, and Village 10 coming together to voice their frustrations.

The protestors assembled in front of the pig farm, which occupies 20 rai and houses over 8,000 pigs. S.Ken’s Bistro – Home of Crafted Food & Drinks

Expat News first met Kantapat “Ken” Agechaosuan when we were both starting new businesses in Hua Hin. Chef Ken, as he is known, was in need of an economical way to market his new restaurant, S.Ken’s Bistro in Kao Tao, to the Hua Hin expat community.

At that breakfast meeting, we forged a collaboration, as Ken calls it, that has lasted eight years – and now extending into a ninth.

Syphilis cases triple among Thai teens, fivefold increase in pregnant women

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) reported a significant increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among Thai people, particularly syphilis. Cases of syphilis among teenagers have tripled compared to previous years and the number of pregnant women with syphilis has increased fivefold.

A report concluded on July 18 showed that syphilis cases in Thailand doubled compared to 2018 (from an average of 11 to 28.1 per 100,000 population). Cases among teenagers tripled, from an average of 27.9 to 91.2 per 100,000 population. Continued …

Roadside bomb injures six police officers in southern Thailand

A roadside bomb detonated in Pattani yesterday, injuring six police officers and prompting the army to urge motorists to exercise caution. The explosion occurred on Road 42 in Nong Chik district as an armored pickup truck carrying the officers was returning to base from a checkpoint.

How Energy Intensive Are Data Centers?

(Note: Several data centers are currently planned or being built in Thailand, which will require a great deal more electric power than currently available.)

In 2022, the global electricity consumption stood at roughly 27,000 terawatt-hours, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). While countries like China and the United States had the highest electricity demand by a considerable margin, a new player that rivals the consumption of some of the biggest economies and is bolstered by the ongoing AI hype has entered the stage: data centers. As the International Energy Agency (IEA) points out in a recent report, estimated data center energy consumption could increase rapidly over the next two years.

While the median estimate for data centers, AI-connected offerings and cryptocurrency mining stood at 415 TWh in 2022, already significantly higher than the United Kingdom’s electricity demand and on par with the electricity consumption of France, this figure could rise to anything between 620 and 1,050 TWh in 2026. Per the IEA’s report, this would be the equivalent “to adding at least one Sweden or at most one Germany” to the most recent estimates. Continued …

Thai AirAsia eyes new Indian routes

Thai AirAsia is focusing on opening new routes to India and within Southeast Asia in the second half to offset unrecovered flights to China, which are still hampered by the sluggish economy and higher competition from domestic travel.

Tansita Akrarittipirom, head of commercial at Thai AirAsia, said the share of Chinese passengers had plunged to 17%, from 27% before the coronavirus pandemic, while the share of Indian passengers is expected to increase to 10% by the end of the year. Continued …

Expats angry at huge concessions in latest Thai visa announcements

Longstay expats with expensive visas say the new 60-days visa-exempt policy and the 180-days Destination Thailand Visa have made the Elite visa and the annual extensions of stay for retirement and marriage worthless. Geoffrey Fisher, a Brit who recently paid 900,000 baht (about 20,000 UK pounds) for the five-year Elite visa said he had wasted his money, as more or less anyone can now stay in Thailand almost indefinitely for a paltry sum.

The disenchanted argue that the 60-days visa-exempt can evidently be extended at local immigration for 30 days more, followed by a border run to start the whole process again. Some immigration officers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport have allegedly told new arrivals they can now do as many border runs as they like. Continued … 

Reminder: No alcohol sales this weekend

Thailand celebrates the start of Buddhist Lent, a three-day religous holiday, this weekend – meaning no alcohol sales for the duration. Today is Asahna Bucha Day, Sunday is Khao Phansa Day, and Monday is a second Asahna Bucha Day.

Alcohol sales are banned from Friday night at midnight until Monday night at midnight.

Asahna Bucha Day is the celebration in Thailand of the “Four Noble Truths” preached by Buddha in his first sermon after his enlightenment. These four noble truths are dukkha, tanha, nibbana, and the eight-fold path.

Khao Phansa Day is a Buddhist holiday observed in Thailand on the first day following the full moon occurring in the eighth month of the Thai lunar calendar. Khao Phansa marks the first day of “Buddhist Lent”, a time when observant Buddhists fast from such things as meat, alcohol, and tobacco. For the most part, only Theravada, rather than Mahayana, Buddhists observe Khao Phansa, and even many Theravada practitioners choose not to fast.

Hua Hin 94 Road Improvement Project Begins Monday

This week, Hua Hin municipal officials and staff, and representatives from Chok Kijcharoen Ltd., the contractor responsible for the project, inspected the site for the upcoming renovation of Hua Hin 94 Road. The project involves installing drainage pipes and resurfacing the road from the western railway intersection to Ban Chang Heng.

During the site visit, project officials announced that construction machinery would be deployed on Monday to begin the first phase of the project. This phase will cover the area from Hua Hin 94 Soi (in front of the 7-11) to the Amara Resort intersection. Continued …

PKK rubber farmers oppose fund use for fish purchase

Rubber farmers in Prachuap Khiri Khan raised concerns over the Ministry of Agriculture’s decision to use funds from the Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAOT) to buy black-banded trevally fish at 15 baht per kilogram. The farmers question the fairness and appropriateness of this policy.

Rungroj Ratanakaw, a resident of Thong Mongkol subdistrict in Bang Saphan district, voiced his disagreement with the ministry’s policy. Government ‘united’ despite weed policy U-turn

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai insisted the government is still united despite recent hiccups with the plan to re-list cannabis as a narcotic, adding that he already talked with Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The question of cannabis is fast becoming a political headache for Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. This week he was confronted by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who voiced his opposition to the process presently underway to re-criminalize possession and use of the drug for recreational purposes.

At a meeting between the key coalition partner and Srettha, Anutin confirmed he would vote against the criminalization of cannabis at a forthcoming meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB) to be chaired by the PM. Economists worry despite IMF’s positive forecast for Thai economy

Though the Finance Ministry is optimistic about Thailand’s economic prospects after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) upgraded the country’s GDP growth to 2.9% from 2.7%, many economists remain worried.

CIMB Thai Group recorded a consolidated net profit of THB 1.2946 billion, a year-on-year (“YoY”) decrease of THB 74.3 million, or 5.4%, while profit before tax (“PBT”) decreased by THB 117.2 million, or 6.8%, YoY to THB 1.611billion.

Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya PCL and its business units) posted a net profit of 15.75 billion baht for H1 2024, a 7.9% YoY decline due to increased prudential provisions. Operating profit growth was driven by revenue from 2023 ASEAN acquisitions and higher domestic income.

Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has firmly denied allegations from a United Nations report claiming that Thai-owned banks were involved in arms sales transactions with Myanmar’s government forces.

During a House of Representatives session, Maris rebuffed claims from Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur for human rights in Myanmar, who asserted that nearly $130 million in weapon sales had been funneled through unnamed Thai banks to Myanmar’s military, the Tatmadaw. NBTC votes not to purchase broadcasting rights for Olympics

A meeting of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) on Wednesday voted unanimously 7:0 not to spend 435 million baht to sponsor the purchase of broadcasting rights for the 2024 Olympic Games and 2024 Paralympic Games.

The motion proposed that the NBTC use resources from its Broadcasting and Telecommunications Research and Development Fund for Public Interest to sponsor the purchase of broadcasting rights for the two sporting events, which will be held in Paris, France from July 26 to Aug. 11, and Aug. 28 to Sept. 8, respectively.
