Certainly, after Minister of Public Health Cholnan Srikaew on Sunday unveiled his new draft legislation, the future of marijuana or pot outlets that have become ubiquitous in Thailand, are now verily in doubt.

New tax era in Thailand begins

Thailand is moving toward greater integration with the international tax framework to stamp out tax avoidance and evasion. Significantly, it comes with the Revenue Department reporting a surge in income in the first few months of the fiscal year, which will also see foreign residents more closely scrutinized for tax.

Thailand’s Revenue Department is to share tax information with 138 countries worldwide as part of the new OECD framework agreed in July 2023. At the same time, the Sept. 15 order, which altered the income tax status of all foreign residents after 35 years, is also now in effect. Continued …

The Excise Department plans to implement four tax measures for the environment and society this year, says Director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas.

The four measures comprise supporting the use of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), including batteries used in other industries such as solar cells; proposing a carbon tax on the energy, transport and industrial sectors; supporting the use of pure ethanol in the production of bioplastics; and supporting the use of certain cars to assist the elderly or disabled. Thai national parks report record revenues and visitors in 2023

The Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation disclosed the rankings of the top 10 highest-earning and most-visited national parks from the pool of 133 parks for the previous year.

Based on revenue from January to December 2023, the top 10 Thai national parks accumulated a total income of 1,651,868,101 baht (US$47 million). Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi topped the chart with an income of 377,321,864 baht (US$10 million). The source from the Office of the Council of State said it would not be making public the advice, but it would let the government disclose the legal advisory council’s opinion. Ministries to clamp down on crop burning as pollution levels rise

In a move to fight air pollution, the ministries of Natural Resources and Environment, and Agriculture and Cooperatives jointly declared war on crop burning, vowing to crack down on one of the main sources of PM2.5 fine dust.

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter and can be inhaled, boosting the risk of health problems like heart disease and asthma. Continued … 

Rapid response plan to cut PM2.5 in the works

Some 11 urgent measures were unveiled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Tuesday to address the PM2.5 smog problem, with a focus on quickly adjusting actions to ensure effective results.

Bus driver in fatal PKK cash was asleep at wheel

The driver of a bus that crashed in Prachuap Khiri Khan, killing 15 people, has confessed to falling asleep at the wheel, leading to a charge of reckless driving.

Thai wage committee upholds 2.37% minimum wage increase

Yesterday, a senior government official announced that the tripartite wage committee has decided to uphold their previously agreed-upon plan to increase the average daily minimum wage by 2.37%.

The Thai General Insurance Assn. (TGIA) has foreseen an unprecedented surge in the insurance industry, with premiums expected to skyrocket to 303 billion baht in 2024.

Time for dithering on tourist insurance to stop

The Thai cabinet on Tuesday finally shelved the long-running plan for a foreign tourism levy. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, however, rejected a stop-gap measure to replace it. He ordered the introduction of automatic insurance cover for all foreign tourists to be provided through the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Bus accident in PKK’s Thap Sakae leaves 14 dead, 35 injured

At least 14 people were killed and 35 others injured when a tour bus left the road and crashed into a tree in Thap Sakae, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Thailand’s weekly Covid-19 cases surge over 500, with three fatalities

The Department of Disease Control in Thailand (DDC) reported a sudden surge in weekly Covid-19 cases, with over 500 new patients and three fatalities. The DDC revealed 88 cases of pneumonia among Covid patients. The report, which covers the period from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, confirms an average of 76 hospital admissions and one death per day.

Since the start of the year, the total number of Covid cases has reached 36,204, with 826 cumulative deaths. Among these, 88 patients have been diagnosed with pneumonia and 40 required respiratory support. Continued …

The cabinet on Monday approved a tax refund scheme for shopping to stimulate domestic spending early next year and promote wider use of electronic invoices, according to the Finance Ministry.

14 Thai hospitals report quake damage

The plan to build a “land bridge” from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea as a route for international trade was given the green light on Oct. 16. Government Must Fix Economy First

A poll conducted by Matichon and Daily News, with over 42,848 votes, reflected the voices of the people from all regions of Thailand. The majority, about 60.2%, indicated that the government should prioritize solving economic and cost-of-living issues, with the highest percentage of male respondents at 63.7%.

The survey, conducted online from Oct. 1-31, reached people of all ages, occupations, education levels and income levels across the country. Thailand is expected to remain the second-largest digital economy in Southeast Asia in terms of gross merchandise value (GMV) from 2023 to 2030, according to data in the “eConomy SEA 2023” report.

Long boat racing returns to Kao Tao Nov 17-19

Khao Tao Reservoir will host the 16th edition of “Long Boat Racing for River Masters” between Nov. 17-19. Participants from all over Thailand are expected to compete across four boat categories.

The event will feature traditional Lao vessels, ancient long boats, Naga head long boats from Nan province, and iron long boats from Buriram.

This competition is organized by Hua Hin municipality, the Thai PBS television station and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth).

Long boat races on Pranburi River Nov. 26

A second longboat racing event will take place on Pranburi River on Nov. 26, following the longboat races on the Kao Tao Reservoir a week earlier. Teams from all over Thailand are expected to participate.

Influenza cases rise five-fold in Thailand

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most popular festivals, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. It involves releasing “krathong” — lotus-shaped rafts decorated with candles, incense and flowers — onto lakes and rivers to honor the Buddha and the water goddess. Video: Cobra caught by wildlife handlers

A cobra lurking near a resident’s yard was captured by wildlife handlers in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The terrified homeowner called the snake catchers for assistance on Oct. 7. Footage shows the volunteers grabbing the three-meter cobra using snake tongs as it tried to hide in a narrow alley beside the house. Gregal, a beachfront Mediterranean restaurant, has opened in Hua Hin. The restaurant is located beside The Royal Princess Condominium Hua Hin. Wine tax in Thailand: A Protectionist Barrier?

Why is wine tax in Thailand 250% on average? In most cases, duties constitute a state’s first protection against products imported from other countries in direct competition with local production.

Does Thailand produce wine? Yes, local production is around one million liters per year and is based in three areas of the country: Loei, Hua Hin and Khao Yai. The projects are relatively recent, and the quality of the wine produced is rather low, with a high price. Electric prices lowered, but how long can subsidies last?

The national oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc has agreed to delay accepting payments of 8-9 billion baht for the gas it sells to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to help the government reduce power bills for the rest of this year. Gas makes up around 60% of the fuel used for power generation in Thailand.

To tame aggressive electricity prices, the Srettha Thavisin cabinet resolved last month to reduce the power tariff to 3.99 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), from 4.45 baht, but this increases the financial burden on EGAT, which needs part of the power tariff to help it settle a huge loss. Continued …
