Two Malaysian Tourists Die in Motorbike Crash in PKK

Two Malaysian tourists lost their lives in a motorbike crash while traveling in heavy rain from Mae Hong Son to Malaysia. The incident occurred on Phetkasem Road in Bang Saphan Noi District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

The crash took place on a curve between kilometer markers 415 and 416 near Ban Nam Lot in Sai Thong subdistrict. At the scene, officers found a black Kawasaki big bike severely damaged off the road and on the roadside grass. Two victims were found, but their identities not disclosed. Continued …

Power prices to see long-term fall

Energy policymakers are optimistic regarding a long-term reduction in the prices of Thai electricity bills, with the power tariff decreasing to 3.70 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), attributed to ongoing attempts to reduce losses in the country’s power supply system.

Nationwide Face Mask Distribution Begins to Combat Air Pollution

Starting tomorrow, the Ministry of Public Health will begin distributing over 8 million face masks across the country to tackle harmful PM 2.5 dust pollution. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those in high-risk areas, known as orange and red zones, can collect masks from public hospitals and health offices. Each person is eligible to receive one mask per day for up to seven days.

The ministry emphasizes there is no mask shortage, with ample supplies of both surgical and N95 masks available. Citizens are advised to monitor air quality levels before heading outdoors and to wear a mask if pollution levels are high to safeguard their health. – aseannow.com

Forest burners in Korat arrested

The authorities have arrested five suspects who set fires to forested areas in the northeastern province of Korat and are searching for 10 more suspects to face prosecution.

From Jan. 1 to Saturday, 25 forest fires were reported, with 6,016 rai of land being destroyed in total, and the major cause was foraging and hunting activities, Deputy Gov. Surapan Sinlapasuwan said in a meeting at the city hall yesterday. Continued …

Four Militants Killed in Yala Security Operation

In an operation in Krong Pinang District, Yala Province, four suspected militants were killed following a confrontation with security forces early yesterday morning. Residents of 44 provinces enjoyed good to very good air quality this morning, while 12 of the 76 provinces had orange (starting to affect health) levels of PM2.5, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Thai FDA approves kratom use for health and economic benefits

Tourist Van Collides with Palm Oil Truck in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Injuring Several

Yesterday, the Sam Roi Yot Police Station received a report of a collision involving a tourist van and a palm oil truck. The incident occurred on the northbound side of Phetkasem Road at kilometer marker 253+600 in Ban Nong Khang, Moo 9, Sila Loi subdistrict, Sam Roi Yot district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Regional action on PM2.5 pollution proposed

Thailand and its neighboring countries must work together to address the problem of PM2.5 haze pollution, Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said yesterday. He said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was very concerned about the issue and has pledged measures to tackle it.

PM2.5 pollution can cost Bangkok up to 6 billion baht

PM2.5 air pollution could cause an economic impact of 3 to 6 billion baht in Bangkok and surrounding areas if it persists for a month, the Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) said yesterday. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, with prolonged exposure linked to chronic health issues such as lung and heart disease.

Bangkok ranked 4th among most polluted cities worldwide

Bangkok today was ranked as the fourth worst city in the world for air quality, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir, as toxic haze continues to affect the capital and other provinces in the country. The air quality index in Bangkok reached 188 as of 9.40am.

Legal amendment on adultery in Thailand enforceable from Jan 22

An adultery law, under which a married person can sue for divorce from their spouse and demand compensation from them if they are found to have had sexual intercourse with a third party, came into force on Jan. 22.

Thailand Celebrates First Day of Marriage Equality

Thailand marked a historic milestone as 1,832 same-sex couples registered their marriages nationwide yesterday, the first day of the Marriage Equality Act implementation. Thailand is bracing for a cool spell across its north, northeast, and central regions during the new year period, with temperatures expected to remain low until Jan. 9, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

Dutch man, 80, saved by CPR in PKK

An 85-year-old man of Dutch nationality was found unconscious and without a pulse after an apparent drowning incident at a popular tourist resort in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Thanks to the swift actions of emergency responders, the man’s life was saved.

The incident occurred yesterday when the elderly man, whose name has not been disclosed, was seen struggling in the water by bystanders. Witnesses immediately called for help, and a local rescue team and emergency medical staff arrived at the scene shortly after. Continued …

Tiger Rescued From Zoo Cage Now Enjoying Life at WFFT

About a year-and-a-half ago, Maruay didn’t know what grass felt like beneath his paws, or what breeze felt like when it brushed his sapphire flesh. He had never taken a sunbath or dipped his feet in river water. Instead, he spent his days caged inside barren concrete walls of a Phuket zoo where tourists looked at him the way humans look at their captives.

But back in 2022, word reached the officials of Thailand’s Wildlife Friends Foundation. They raided this zoo and rescued 10 tigers, including Maruay. A footage that has been running viral on the internet, shows a blissful Maruay floating in the lake, with his favorite toy. Continued …

The first report by a local journalist on Dec. 26, 2004, at 8:20 am was simple: “Giant waves hit Phuket,” announced a reporter working for Channel 11 (now NBT2).

Thailand’s new business registration increased 2.37% in the first 11 months compared to a year earlier, with the accumulated number approaching the 90,000 target for 2024, official data showed on Monday.

The Energy Policy Administration Committee has resolved to extend the capped price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking at 423 baht per 15-kilogram cylinder until March 31 next year.

Cabinet okays raising foreign staff quota

The cabinet has approved in principle increasing the number of foreign workers at businesses to deal with the shortage. Upgrade of Hua Hin Airport to continue next year

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Saturday the ministry had ordered the Department of Airports, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other agencies to develop Hua Hin’s operations, including acquiring a certificate to operate it as an international airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), said the development plan for Hua Hin Airport consists of two major projects. The first, expanding the runway, has been completed. The second, work on related infrastructure aspects of the airport, such as the runway tunnel over the highway, still need 300 billion baht and budget approval. Continued …

“It will be the end of Hua Hin as a laid back beach town resort. Tourist operators from China, India and Russia will promote Hua Hin as a place to have a vacation.”

“Heard this rubbish for years and they cannot even get a single service yet from Singapore or KL . And, of course, if you noticed the traffic congestion already in peak season, and the new train station, the road system will also need upgrades. Have they planned for that?”

Canada is the leading country worldwide for essential healthcare coverage, according to The World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Health Statistics 2024 report. The organization ranked 194 countries based on a selection of indicators of key health concerns, such as reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health, infectious diseases, noncommunicable diseases and service capacity and access.

Wild Elephant Kills Man in Prachinburi

Yesterday, a wild elephant from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary crossed into a village in Prachinburi Province, fatally attacking a 45-year-old man near a sugarcane field.

The Kabin Buri Police Station was notified of the incident in the early morning. The victim was found dead on the edge of a sugarcane field. Construction Workers Found Dead After Landslide on Koh Samui

In an incident on Koh Samui, Surat Thani, a landslide caused by heavy rain buried the makeshift shelters of construction workers, leaving two men from Myanmar missing. The workers were stationed at a site where four vacation homes were being constructed located on a hillside.

The landslide struck around 4 am yesterday. ADB upgrades Thailand growth forecast, trims developing Asia’s outlook

The Asian Development Bank has upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and kept the forecast for next year unchanged. The bank also said developing Asia is likely to grow more slowly than previously thought this year and next, and the outlook could worsen if President-elect Donald Trump makes swift changes to U.S. trade policy.

Developing Asia, which includes 46 Asia-Pacific countries stretching from Georgia to Samoa – and excludes Japan, Australia and New Zealand – is projected to grow 4.9% this year and 4.8% next year, slightly lower than the ADB’s forecasts of 5.0% and 4.9% in September. Continued …

Thailand trails Asia in rice yield race – by a lot

Thailand’s rice yields are significantly lower than other major Asian rice producers, according to Anon Nonsee, deputy director general of the Department of Rice. The average rice yield in Thailand is about 400 to 500 kilograms per rai (0.16 hectares), far below Vietnam’s 1,000 kilograms per rai and China’s 1,000 to 1,200 kilograms per rai.

While some Thai rice varieties can achieve yields similar to these countries, jasmine rice, renowned for its fragrance and soft texture, brings the average down due to its lower yield of 350 to 400 kilograms per rai. British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

British man’s Thai-high trip goes up in smoke at Manchester customs

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Increase in unemployment likely in early 2025, expert says

Demand for nursing homes and residences for the elderly has surged as Thailand has entered an aged society, according to results of a survey by the Real Estate Information Center (REIC) released on Sunday.

In Thailand, the number of people aged above 60 years accounts for 20% of the population. The aged population is expected to increase by 4.89% annually. A majority of survey respondents planned to travel during the New Year, of whom over 90% are opting for domestic trips, according to a nationwide Dusit Poll by Suan Dusit University.

Chinese visitors to Thailand between January-November top 6 million

Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

China ranked as the top source of tourists with 6,214,226 visitors, followed by Malaysia (4,506,898), India (1,915,152), South Korea (1,685,600), and Russia (1,503,312).
