Alien: Earth series filming at Sam Roi Yot lake

The new science fiction horror series Alien: Earth, part of the iconic Alien franchise, has brought global attention to Sam Roi Yot after scenes were filmed at Bueng Bua in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. Known locally as the lotus lake, the location features prominently in the eight-part series, which premiered in Thailand on Disney+ yesterday and runs through to Sept. 23.

One-eyed abused tiger, Rambo, escapes with his life after 20 years in cruel captivity

For almost 20 years, Rambo the tiger lived in a concrete cell in Thailand, sentenced to life imprisonment for tourists’ entertainment. The first thing he did upon being rescued was take a swim. For five blissful hours, the Bengal tiger – a species known to love water – experienced the joy of swimming for the first time in his life.

Rambo is elderly, half blind, and suffers from severe dental issues due to years of malnutrition and gnawing on the metal bars of his cage. In order to live his final years without pain, he needs the very best, dedicated care. Continued …

12 fishermen test positive in Hua Hin drug crackdown

Prachuap Khiri Khan officials have launched a targeted operation to identify drug users and dealers as part of the Interior Ministry’s “No Drugs No Dealers” policy, aimed at creating drug-free communities.

Yesterday, Deputy Governor Suthee Laosubinprasert and Mueang District Chief Supachai Krutdam oversaw inspections of three fishing vessels at Khlong Wan Pier. Urine tests were carried out on 17 crew members — three Cambodians, two Myanmar nationals, and 12 Thais. Results showed 12 people tested positive for drugs, including two Cambodians and 10 Thais. Thailand’s Meteorological Department reported today that the monsoon trough is currently lying across the upper north of Thailand and into a low-pressure cell over Laos, while the moderate southwest monsoon is prevailing over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf.

Isolated heavy rains are expected in the north, northeast, east, and south (west coast) over the next few days, the department said. Thai Army accuses Cambodia of laying landmines in Thai territory

The Royal Thai Army yesterday posted a video that showed Cambodian soldiers planting landmines in areas patroled by Thai forces. The video, dated July 21, featured a Cambodian soldier in camouflage, wearing a green t-shirt and sandals, burying what appeared to be PMN-2 mines.

How 600-pound megafish became a collector’s item in Thailand

When a 200-pound Mekong giant catfish turned up at a flooded train station in the Thai city of Chiang Mai last year, it stopped people in their tracks. Seeing a six-to-seven-foot long fish trapped outside a ticket booth was a surreal sight — and it raised an obvious question: Where did it come from?

It certainly did not come from its natural habitat — the Mekong River, which runs through several Southeast Asian countries. The critically endangered species is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish and has become vanishingly rare in the wild in Thailand.   • Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

Hua Hin has been recognized with the National Merit Marker Award for its efforts to prevent drowning, receiving top honors at a national seminar held to mark World Drowning Prevention Day.

Thai Army says 2,500 Cambodian Troops Killed in Border Clashes

The Thai army reports that about 2,500 Cambodian soldiers have died in ongoing border clashes as they attempt to reclaim the Prasat Ta Khwai area in Panom Dongrak district, Surin, and the Pumakhua area in Kantharalak district, Sisaket. Maj. Gen. Wanchana Sawatdee shared this estimate during an interview, noting reports from four different sources, but concerns about accuracy persist, with estimates ranging from 700 to 6,000.

Cambodian forces have mainly suffered casualties in rear support divisions due to Thai airstrikes, rather than in direct frontline engagement. Thai troops have regained control over disputed territories by adhering to established boundaries, while Cambodian forces have retreated. Thailand tops global infidelity list with 51% rate

Research conducted in 2024 highlights Thailand as the leading country where spouses most frequently engage in infidelity. It is the only Asian nation to make the list of the top 20 countries with the highest rates of marital cheating.

In the global ranking of infidelity rates, Thailand leads with 51%, followed by Denmark at 46%, Germany and Italy each at 45%, and France at 43%. Grab posts surge in orders among expats

Grab has reported a 50% surge in delivery orders from expatriates and digital nomads in Thailand over the past 12 months. Thai cuisine such as fried rice, chicken rice and Thai tea have become favorites, while GrabBike usage grew by 30%, said the company.

A 5-meter-long python fell through the ceiling of a cat room in an apparent attempt to prey on a group of pedigree Scottish Fold cats.

Upon arriving at the two-story house, officers discovered the massive python coiled on top of a cabinet inside a room used for housing cats. US Tariff Threatens to Cut Thai Exports by 275 Billion Baht, Study Finds

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has warned that a 19% US customs tariff could slash Thai exports by 275.069 billion baht in 2026, trimming the country’s GDP by 1.48% for the year.

According to Thanawat Polwichai, president and chief adviser for the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, the immediate impact for the remaining five months of 2025 is estimated to be a 114.612 billion baht reduction in exports, which would lead to a 0.62% drop in GDP for the year. Key Thai sectors still protected under US tariff pact

Thailand’s pledge of near-total market access for US goods includes key limits to protect some domestic industries, according to a government official, laying out the terms the country sought for its tariff deal with Washington.

The Thai baht has returned to an appreciating trend against the US dollar, driven primarily by external factors, as weaker-than-expected American employment data fuels speculation of aggressive Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.

Former Hua Hin expat seeks bail in murder trial

Graeme Davidson, a Hua Hin resident and well-known member of the local expat community, is seeking bail in Australia after being charged with the murder of his wife during a kayaking trip in 2020. Davidson, a former army major, had been living in Hua Hin since April 2021.

He was arrested in Brisbane earlier this year during a return visit and was charged with the murder of his wife, Jacqueline Davidson, and with multiple counts of fraud and attempted fraud in relation to life insurance claims exceeding AU$1 million. Continued …

Less rain expected for 10 days

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a 15-day forecast predicting a temporary drop in rainfall across the upper regions before a resurgence of heavy rain in 10 days over much of the country.

Less rainfall can be expected between July 31 and Aug. 10, followed by a resurgence of widespread and heavy showers from Aug. 11 to 14, especially in the north, northeast, central plains and eastern regions — including Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. Continued …

Eastern rail service resumes normal operation to Cambodia border

The railway service from Bangkok to the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province is now operating again after a temporary suspension due to Thai-Cambodian border clashes.

US imposes 19% tariff on Thai products

Thailand has successfully negotiated a reciprocal tariff agreement with the United States, resulting in a substantial reduction in (threatened) import duties on Thai goods from 36% to 19%, government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap announced today.

The new rate, effective from today, positions Thailand competitively alongside key regional economies such as Vietnam, Philippines, and Japan, which already enjoy similar tariff levels. Continued …

Thai Chamber of Commerce praises 19% US tax deal

Poj Aramwatananont, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, expressed high praise for the Thailand negotiation team (“Team Thailand”) for successfully reaching a 19% reciprocal tariff agreement with the United States, which allows Thailand to remain competitive with its regional counterparts. Countries like Indonesia and Vietnam currently face similar tariff rates of 19% and 20%, respectively.

(Editor: What is not revealed in today’s tariff news is what Thailand gave up. Most of the countries in previous deals also exempted tariffs on US products. Did Thailand do the same? Are Thai agricultural products protected? Did Thailand promise investments in the US as other countries have done?)

Although the new tariff rate is higher than the previous 10%, Poj regarded it as a strong achievement, especially considering that Thailand had faced the possibility of a 36% tariff. The fact that Team Thailand managed to lower the figure to 19% within a limited timeframe demonstrated their dedication, strategic understanding, and proactive negotiation abilities. Continued …

Economic downturn leads to 6,244 business closures in H1 2025

In the first half of 2025, Thailand saw a reduction in new business registrations due to the economic slowdown, with 6,244 businesses shutting down, according to the Department of Business Development (DBD).

Thai GDP growth set to slow in Q3

100% Booking Cancellations Hit Thai Hotels Amid Cambodia Border Clashes

Clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border have upended the tourism industry in seven provinces, with a 100% cancellation rate in affected areas. Phuket Faces Waste Crisis as Garbage Piles Up

Thailand Tops ASEAN in EV Registrations, Investment Surpasses $4 Billion

Thailand’s electric vehicle (EV) market continues to flourish, with registrations up 52% year-on-year in the first half of 2025. Total investment for the production of electric vehicles, charging stations and battery facilities has exceeded $4 billion.

According to Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary general of the Board of Investment (BOI) and secretary of the National Electric Vehicle Policy Committee (EV Board), 57,289 new battery electric passenger vehicles (BEVs) were registered in the first half of 2025, an increase of 52% compared to the same period in 2024. Thailand F-16 jet bombs Cambodian targets as border clash escalates

A Thai F-16 fighter jet bombed targets in Cambodia, both sides said, as weeks of tension over a border dispute escalated into clashes yesterday that have killed at least 12 people, including 11 civilians.

Tourism confidence dives

A self-styled charity organizer has landed in hot water after allegedly conning top-tier donors out of 2.7 million baht, all under the pretense of raising money for underprivileged children and monks. Instead of helping the needy, she reportedly helped herself.

Cambodia opens fire at Thai military base

Cambodian soldiers opened fire at a Thai military base in the northeastern province of Surin and launched rockets toward Si Sa Ket this morning, as hostilities in the disputed border area worsened, according to the Royal Thai Army.

Vietnam was the first in Asia to reach a deal with the U.S., agreeing to a 20% counter-tariff, followed by Indonesia at 19%. It is only a week away from the Aug. 1 deadline when the 36% reciprocal tariff levied on Thai exports to the U.S. will take effect. However, U.S. President Donald Trump has left the door open for countries to negotiate for lower tariffs.

‘Moderately Serious’ Arsenic Levels Found in Kok River

Four out of five samples of water taken from Kok River in Thailand, which is a tributary of Mekong River, showed arsenic levels higher than the standard limit of 0.01 milligram per liter, according to a recent water-quality assessment by the Mekong River Commission (MRC), classifying it as “moderately serious”.

Editor: A “promenade” is in the plans. However, legal action by the affected businesses is a possibility, delaying any demolition and possible “improvements” perhaps by years.

Red Cross and Hua Hin District Fair starts today

The 27th annual Red Cross and Hua Hin District Fair will take place from June 27 to July 6. Thai regulator prepares for possible gas price spike

The tentative ceasefire between Israel and Iran is giving Thai energy regulators more time to brace for liquefied natural gas (LNG) price fluctuations, which often lead to higher electricity bills, says an energy official who requested anonymity.

Officers from Mueang Phang Nga Police Station apprehended two suspects, 29 year old Muhama Wadeng and 27 year old Sulaiman Gaza, in the southern province of Phang Nga at 3.30 am Tuesday. Patong Beach gets bomb squad and sniffer dogs for tourist safety

Phuket officials are ramping up security in one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations after a safety inspection at Patong Beach, aimed at reassuring tourists and locals. On Wednesday, a bomb scare was averted thanks to the swift action of local police, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units, and specially trained sniffer dogs.

A wave of coordinated attacks shook Pattani Province Wednesday night, as a group of at least 10 armed men stormed and set fire to the Plen Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO)building in Sai Buri District, destroying four vehicles and leaving behind what appeared to be explosive devices at multiple sites across two districts.

The incident prompted police, firefighters, and emergency response teams to rush to the scene. Suspected Explosive Device Found Outside Phang Nga Governor’s Residence

Authorities in Phang Nga were placed on high alert after a suspected explosive device was discovered yesterday near the perimeter fence of the provincial governor’s residence. Initial reports indicate that the device, disguised to resemble a rock, contained an operational explosive mechanism with a possible blast radius of up to 10 meters.

Authorities have set a final deadline ofJuly 7 for the demolition of more than 30 beachside buildings in Hua Hin that have been deemed illegal due to encroachment on public coastal land.

The buildings in question include homes, guesthouses, and seafood restaurants, many of which have become familiar fixtures in the area over several decades. Ongoing road improvement works in the Takiab area

Local officials have carried out an on-site inspection of ongoing road-improvement works in the Takiab area, as part of efforts to upgrade road conditions and improve safety for motorists. The project involves applying an asphalt concrete overlay to the Nong Kae–Takiab Road. The resurfacing is scheduled to take place between June 24 and July 3.

Hua Hin installs high-capacity water pumps to help prevent flooding

Hua Hin has begun operating two high-capacity water pumps to reduce the risk of flooding during the rainy season. The pumps, provided by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (Region 4), are diesel-powered and capable of discharging 31,500 liters of water per minute. They have been installed at two key locations — at the end of the Khlong Takiab canal and near the Huana Reservoir.

Road safety shock: Pedestrian deaths on the rise

A new report on deaths among footpath users is shocking and unacceptable. On Monday, the Department of Disease Control released its safety report, saying 5,066 pedestrians were killed in accidents from 2015 to 2024, or 506 deaths annually.

Businesses call for delay in minimum wage hike

The government needs to reconsider its plan to increase the daily minimum wage in Bangkok to 400 baht from July 1, as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot bear additional costs in such a weak economy, which is expected to slow further in the second half of this year, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Bangkok is slated to be added to a list of provinces where the daily minimum wage is 400 baht, a campaign pledge of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. A pilot program in four areas raised the daily minimum wage to 400 baht on Jan. 1 this year. Continued …

New minimum wage could lead to hotel layoffs

Large-scale layoffs in the hotel sector could be seen during this low season if the government agrees to raise the minimum wage to 400 baht from next week as planned, while the Thai Hotels Assn.(THA) has submitted a petition to the prime minister, asking for the policy to be cancelled.

La-iad Bungsrithong, an adviser to the THA board, said that as five-star hotels in Chiang Mai had earlier been mandated with the 400-baht daily minimum wage, they had already felt an impact from the soaring wage costs, which are up 14% from last year. Continued …

Phuket Fines Over 28,000 Foreign Tourists for Traffic Offenses So Far in 2025

Phuket officials have reported that 28,809 foreign tourists have been fined for traffic violations on the island to date in 2025. Russian visitors topped the list with 3,121 cases, followed by tourists from China (1,721), the UK (1,419), France (1,365), and India (1,069).

Since Jan. 1, the police have arrested 369 foreigners for various offenses. These include 87 violations of the Immigration Act, 65 cases of drunk driving, and 27 breaches of the Alien Employment Act.
