New study reveals 10 most polluted tourist cities, Bangkok fourth

A new study reveals the tourist cities with the highest pollution levels anywhere worldwide. Based on the study conducted by DIPNDIVE, Egypt’s Cairo came out on top, despite attracting 14.9 million visitors annually.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles, the world’s third most visited city with more than 49 million tourists annually, is the second most polluted destination, while top Asian destination Hong Kong ranked third. Grenade Explodes at Tak Festival, Leaves 3 Dead, 39 Injured

During the annual “Amazing Umphang” fair in Tak province, a grenade exploded near the main stage, turning a night of celebration into chaos. The incident occurred around 23:30 last night, as locals and visitors gathered to enjoy a traditional dance performance at the event’s dance stage.

Cabinet nods for power bill subsidy for vulnerable groups

The Cabinet has approved a total budget of Bt1.9 billion to subsidize power bills for vulnerable groups during September–December 2024. For power bills in September, the Cabinet approved that the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial Electricity Authority allocate a subtotal budget of Bt472.67 million for the subsidy.

The retroactive measure means that vulnerable individuals with power bills recorded at no higher than 300 units during the four-month period are eligible for the subsidy, equivalent to a 19.05 satang discount per unit. The special measure benefits 2.31 million people in metropolitan areas and another 16.55 million in provincial areas. – Thai PBS

Millionaire woman among 12 beggars arrested in Bangkok

Twelve beggars were arrested in the inner Sukhumvit area of Bangkok on Thursday night, including a Thai woman who had earned over a million baht. The Immigration Division 1 revealed on Friday that locals had complained about a lot of beggars in the area, which was hurting Thailand’s image.

Bt300 billion allocated for six dual-track railway projects

The Transport Ministry aims to invest almost 300 billion baht to expand a raft of dual railway tracks next year. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced the plan to accelerate the implementation of the second phase, which will cover six dual-track railway projects.

These routes span a total of 1,312 kilometers, with a combined budget of 298.06 billion baht. Thailand second among high-risk nations under Trump’s 2.0 plans

The Innovation and Technology Information Foundation (ITIF), a U.S.-based think tank, released its “Trump Risk Index”, evaluating risks faced by 39 U.S.-allied countries and territories under Donald Trump’s presidency. Thailand emerged as the second nation facing the highest risk and is the only Asian country in the top 10.

The report highlighted Thailand’s vulnerabilities, particularly its significant trade surplus with the U.S. and its below-average defense spending. Thailand’s digital economy expands 5.7% in 2024

Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Prasert Chanthararuangthong announced on Friday that Thailand’s digital economy is projected to grow by 5.7% this year. He attributed this growth to the effective implementation of digital economy policies by the governments of both former prime minister Srettha Thavisin and his successor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra.

Researchers in Thailand are exploring the science behind herbal compresses

The scent of fragrant lemongrass mingles with earthy ginger and tangy tamarind, punctuated by the sharp, menthol-like aroma of camphor. It’s a familiar smell for spa-goers: a traditional Thai herbal compress. The treatment combines herbs in a cotton cloth, which is wrapped into a compact ball and steamed for around 10 minutes before the practitioner applies it to the body, typically after a massage.

Herbal compresses have been used for centuries for muscle aches, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation. However, it’s unclear how much benefit comes from the herbs: a 2015 review paper highlighted that the effects were mainly associated with heat, which increases blood flow and reduces pain. Modest growth likely for Thai vehicle production in 2025

Thailand’s automotive sector continues to face significant economic and financial headwinds as of the third quarter of 2024. According to data provided by the Asean Automotive Federation, total vehicle sales declined by 25.3% year-on-year as of September 2024 to tally 438,303 units.

Vehicle production followed the downward trend in sales, declining by 18.6% year-on-year over the same period to total 1.13 million units. Thailand’s agricultural exports surge to Bt1.54 trillion Jan-Oct

Thailand’s agricultural sector chalked up a trade surplus of over 900 million baht in the first 10 months of the year, driven by strong export performance, a senior official of the Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) said on Thursday.

Total agricultural trade value climbed to 2.15 trillion baht between January and October, representing a 6.49% increase compared to the same period in 2023, office Secretary-general Chantanon Wannakejohn, said. PM to chair Pheu Thai party meeting in Hua Hin tomorrow

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will take a day away from matters of government tomorrow so she can chair a general meeting of the Pheu Thai Party in Hua Hin. Also attending will be former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, her father, and Srettha Thavisin.

Paetongtarn will travel to Hua Hin by train, departing from Bangkok in the morning, stopping at Bang Bamru railway station to pick up her family, who will include her sister, Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong’s family and her elder brother, Panthongtae Shinawatra. I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. Cabinet approves debt-relief measures

The cabinet on Wednesday approved debt support measures, including interest suspensions and reduced principal payments, to help tackle household and small-business debt, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. Thailand’s shrimp industry battered by disease, low prices

Thai shrimp production is expected to decrease by 4% year-on-year because of disease outbreaks and falling prices, says the Thai Shrimp Assn. Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the association, said total shrimp production in 2024 is predicted to fall to 270,000 tons, from 280,000 tons last year.

The decline is attributed to disease outbreaks and unstable weather, which affect the quality of baby shrimp and farming conditions. Falling prices have also prompted some farmers to postpone their new farming cycles. Continued …

Nearly 17.5 million motorists will be traveling during New Year break

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. Young people in Thailand call for a bigger role in climate action

Youth advocates yesterday submitted climate action recommendations to the Royal Thai government. The recommendations drew on a national Suan Dusit Poll of nearly 1,000 children and young people across Thailand, followed by one-to-one discussions between UNICEF and young representatives.

The poll found that 93% of young people reported feeling the impact of climate change in their daily lives, affecting their mental and physical health, and that 85% were eager to take action. EV Primus Opens Wuling Electric Vehicle Assembly Line in Thailand

EV Primus, has announced the establishment of an assembly line for Wuling electric vehicles. The company plans to promote the production of six vehicle models by 2027 and launch two new car models within this year.

ADB upgrades Thailand growth forecast, trims developing Asia’s outlook

The Asian Development Bank has upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and kept the forecast for next year unchanged. Collision on Chao Phraya River Near Bangkok Bridge, One Boat Sinks

A boat collision occurred on the Chao Phraya River near the Bangkok Bridge yesterday, resulting in one vessel sinking and damage to five others. Rainmaking flights over Hua Hin give air quality instant boost

The air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin, Bangkok, its adjacent provinces and some northern provinces has reportedly improved following the first day of rainmaking flights by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (DRRAA).

Baby elephants’ trunks caught in snares, rescue underway

Authorities from the Department of Conservation Area 2 (Sriracha) mobilized a team of veterinarians and wildlife officers to rescue two injured baby elephants trapped in snares. Concerns have been raised over the potential danger posed by the protective elephant herd during the operation.

The injured elephants were first spotted on Sunday in the forest around Kaeng Hang Maew, Kaeng Hang Maew District, Chanthaburi. 40% of fathers smoke, survey shows

Almost four in 10 fathers in Thailand smoke cigarettes, which mostly has a negative influence on their children, especially as more young people are now vaping while the average age of people who vape drops each year, according to new survey findings.

The survey, conducted recently on 1,159 fathers and other male relatives who have a key role in raising a child from birth until six years of age, found that 39.8% of respondents are smokers. Most (77.22%) smoke cigarettes, 12.36% vape and the rest both smoke both, he said. Continued …

Cabinet puts Bt10,000 benefit for the elderly on hold

Cabinet approves 38.58 billion baht for rice farmers’ subsidies

The Cabinet on Tuesday earmarked 38.58 billion baht to cover subsidies for 4.68 million rice-farming households nationwide this year, Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said. She said the funds would be spent on providing a 1,000 baht per rai subsidy, capped at 10 rai per family.

Cabinet to consider carbon tax next week

The Finance Ministry is set to propose a carbon tax for cabinet approval on Dec. 11. Speaking at the Sustainability Forum 2025 seminar on Tuesday, Kulaya Tantitemit, director-general of the Excise Department, said the implementation of the carbon tax would not affect operators or consumers of oil and petroleum products because the overall tax burden on oil and petroleum products will remain the same.

Road safety above profits

The collapse of a launching gantry crane and precast concrete on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon early on Friday morning resulted in the deaths of six construction workers and the injury of nine others. It was a shocking accident on this stretch of road, also known as Highway 35, which is already well known for its high rate of motoring accidents.

Last week’s collapse adds to a grim list of statistics linked to the road. According to the Department of Highways (DoH), 2,242 accidents occurred on the highway during 2018-2023, or 373 cases each year. In those six years, 132 people died, and 1,305 people were injured. Continued …

14 southern provinces on high alert for floods from today

30% of tourists to Japan experienced overtourism problems in 2024

Over 30% of foreign tourists to Japan experienced problems associated with overtourism during their trips in 2024, and more than 60% said they are willing to accept higher charges as a way to ease congestion and protect natural and cultural resources, according to a recent survey.

The survey of 7,796 foreigners about their travel plans and experiences, jointly conducted by the Development Bank of Japan and the Japan Travel Bureau Foundation and released in October, found that congestion of tourist destinations was the most common problem, with 32% of respondents saying they experienced it during their stay. Excessive PM2.5 pollution in many parts of Bangkok today

Air quality in Bangkok today is poor, with the amount of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere measured in 63 places as exceeding the 37.5 micron (µg/m³) safety level, according to the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

The levels of PM2.5 over the past 24 hours, as measured at 7am this morning, range from 30.9-56.3µg/m³s, with the worst air pollution being reported in Nong Khaem, where the level was 56.3µg/m³s. Continued …

Electric buses spell end to Phuket songthaews

The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO) on Monday did a test run of its fleet of electric buses, which were bought to alleviate air pollution, reduce traffic congestion and promote smart city development.

Two more dugongs found dead in seas off Krabi

Two more dugongs have been found dead in the sea off the southern province of Krabi, bringing the total number of deaths to 15 in the past two months.

One carcass was found floating in the sea in Chao Ooth Bay of Ko Lanta district by fishermen, while the other was found in the sea off Nua Khlong district. ADB, Gulf ink $820-million loan for 12 renewable energy projects in Thailand

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Gulf Renewable Energy Co., a subsidiary of Gulf Energy Development Public Co., have signed an $820-million loan that will fund the construction of 12 renewable energy projects across Thailand.

ADB said the projects include eight ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) plants with contracted capacity of 393 megawatts (MW) and four ground-mounted solar PV plants with battery energy storage, with contracted capacity of 256 MW and 396 MW-hours of energy storage. Continued …

Valeura starts up three more oil wells at Jasmine field offshore Thailand

Valeura Energy has completed a five-well infill drilling program on its Jasmine field in license B5/27 in the Gulf of Thailand. Three new wells have come onstream from the Jasmine D platform, all drilled as producers.

Royal Navy leads eco-mission to save Maya Bay

Maya Bay, the jewel of Thailand’s Andaman Sea, is getting a new lease on life thanks to a conservation push led by the Royal Thai Navy (RTN). On Monday, Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul of the RTN Third Area Command spearheaded the installation of mooring and fish egg buoys, alongside a deep-sea garbage collection effort.

Treaty could end our plastic crisis

On Nov. 13, a coalition of 160 civil society organisations in Thailand made a historic plea, submitting a joint statement urging the Thai government to champion a strong Global Plastics Treaty at the upcoming fifth and final negotiations in Busan, South Korea. This treaty, initiated in 2022, aims to establish a legally binding global framework to address plastic pollution across its entire life cycle.

But scientists are increasingly using the bands to measure exposure to toxic chemicals present in the air around us and in everyday items we use, including personal care products.

Silicone mimics the way the human body absorbs harmful chemicals and has little pores similar in size to pores in human cells.
