Thailand’s Winter Expected to Start Oct 29, Colder Than Last Year

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has announced that the 2024 winter season is set to begin on Oct. 29 and is expected to last until late February 2025. This season is anticipated to be colder than last year, with December 2024 to January 2025 marking the coldest period.

According to Dr. Sukanyaniyawinyacharn, acting director-general of the Meteorological Department, the onset of winter is assessed by three factors: a consistent drop in temperatures below 23°C across northern Thailand, a shift to northeast and east winds at lower altitudes, and a gradual decrease in rainfall. Fireworks Explosion Claims 4 Lives, Injures 7 at Kathin Festival Celebration

Tragedy struck a village gathering in Kalasin Province as a fireworks explosion claimed the lives of four individuals and injured seven others while they prepared for a Kathin festival celebration. The incident occurred yesterday in the village of Kao Noi, Kamalasai district.

Retirement age to go up to 65

The Labor Ministry plans to raise the retirement age for both private and government sectors to 65 years, the same as in Singapore and Switzerland, said Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. Phiphat said on Friday that the idea of extending the retirement age was attributed to today’s improvements in health and medical advancements.

According to him, the ministry also plans to amend the Social Security Act and expand the social security benefit to cover 2 million migrant workers, including those from Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, he said. Continued …

Bangkok Braces for Rising PM2.5 Levels Amid Cool Weather

Bangkok is set to experience increased pollution levels over the weekend as PM2.5 particles hang heavy in the air, exacerbated by cool weather and poor circulation, according to the Pollution Control Department. Unsafe PM2.5 concentrations were recorded in 36 areas across the city, with Nong Khaem district leading the pack at 51.1µg/m³.

These fine particulate matters were measured between 19.5µg/m³ and 53.8µg/m³ early this morning. A combination of local climatic conditions and external influences, like the Trami tropical cyclone traversing the South China Sea, is expected to induce more rain next week, which promises to alleviate the pollution. Bangkok, Chiang Mai among world’s worst cities for air pollution

After the floods, air pollution follows in Thailand. Bangkok and Chiang Mai have made it into the top 50 cities worldwide for small dust particle pollution, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir.

Black Cobra Found Under Car’s Hood, Fearless Monk Captures It Barehanded

A local resident was left in shock after discovering a massive black king cobra, over two meters long, hiding in their parked car. The incident, which took place near Tham Pha Pu Temple in Ban Nam Phu, Loei Province, quickly drew the attention of police and rescue volunteers.

Grapes of wrath

A report about high levels of pesticides found in sampled Shine Muscat grapes has raised fears about food safety, leading many to wonder how many fruits and vegetables sold at markets are laced with toxic chemicals.

(Editor: There have been previous reports that garlic imported from China is grown with toxic chemicals. Hua Hin wet markets and groceries typically carry lower-cost Chinese garlic, which can be identified by the flat bottom of the bulbs.)

The report was not conducted by a government agency but by the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-PAN) and the Foundation for Consumers, both non-government organizations campaigning against the use of chemicals in farming. Continued …

The playful and pudgy mammal that went viral from its Thai zoo enclosure has a sad story to tell about her fellows hippos. Moo Deng is the two-month-old pygmy hippo who flicks her ears in joy and likes splashing in water. She lives the life of a superstar at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, where huge crowds have massed – but the chances of spotting her relatives in the wild are slim.

Pygmy hippos (Choeropsis liberiensis) are endangered and estimated to number fewer than 2,500. Their decline has been drastic: a long-term survey in a national park in Ivory Coast found 12,000 pygmy hippos in 1982; 5,000 in 1997 and 2,000 in 2011. Dugong deaths rise in Thailand, as seagrass sources dwindle

Thailand has witnessed a concerning rise in dugong deaths, with eight found dead this month alone. Three of these deaths are believed to be due to the deterioration of seagrass, a crucial food source for these gentle marine mammals.

Pinsak Suraswadi, director-general of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, said on Thursday three dugong carcasses were spotted in Satun, two each in Trang and Phuket, and one in Krabi. Continued …

Deputy Minister of Finance Julapun Amornvivat has outlined his plans for a casino bill to be sent to the cabinet before the year’s end. On Thursday, he outlined key details to be discussed with the Entertainment Complex Act.

Trade agreements fuel growth in Thai agricultural exports

Thailand’s agricultural exports grew by 8% year on year in the first eight months of 2024, valued at $19.826 billion, the Department of International Trade Negotiations said. Of the total, 69% of exports were to countries with whom Thailand has free trade agreements, amounting to $13.774 billion (430 billion baht), department Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said.

Thailand remains the No. 1 agricultural products exporter in ASEAN and ranks eighth globally. Major export markets include China, which represents over 31% of Thailand’s total agricultural exports, followed by ASEAN at 15%, Japan at 11%, and South Korea at 3%. Continued …

Violence erupts in Deep South as deadline on Tak Bai case nears

Three violent attacks were carried out in Pattani and Narathiwat Wednesday evening and early Thursday in what are suspected to be symbolic attacks related to the Tak Bai massacre case, the statute of limitations on which is due to expire today.

Tak Bai massacre families left without justice as charge deadline expires

Khalijah Musa was just 12 years old when her brother Sari was stuffed into a Thai army truck, hands bound, joining a pile of arrested protesters who all suffocated to death.

Chinese-grown Shine Muscat grapes contaminated with dangerous chemicals

Shine Muscat grapes imported from China have been found to be heavily laced with dangerous chemicals, including chlorpyrifos, the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-Pan) and the Foundation for Consumers announced.

The two consumer protection organizations recently conducted laboratory tests on 24 samples of the juicy and popular grapes purchased from retail outlets, vendors and wet markets. Nine samples were imported from China, while the remaining 15 samples were imported from unknown sources. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices take a dive

Gold prices have taken a nosedive in Thailand, with gold ornaments now pegged at 44,100 baht per baht weight. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reports a 300-baht drop from yesterday, putting an end to the recent upward streak.

As of this morning, gold bullion is fetching 43,500 baht to buy and 43,600 baht to sell per baht weight. Meanwhile, 96.5% purity gold ornaments are being snapped up for 42,720.88 baht but hitting the market at 44,100 baht. Continued …

Phuket cannabis shop owner finds thieves for a taste of revenge

One of the cannabis shop owners in Phuket who fell victim to two foreign thieves, yesterday tracked down the suspects and physically assaulted them at their accommodation.

Several cannabis shop owners in Phuket reached out to other vendors to warn them after losing products to the two foreign thieves, whose identities remain undisclosed. CCTV footage from some of the ganja shops showed the thieves stealing entire jars of products from each shop. Continued …

Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. It added that the government’s state welfare card scheme in 2023 accepted applications from those who had missed the application deadlines in the previous rounds, allowing more people to gain access to state-funded services and benefits. Thailand’s vehicle production hits the brakes

The automotive industry in Thailand has experienced a significant downturn in vehicle production, with September seeing a total of 122,277 units produced, marking a 25.5% decrease from the same period last year.

The Ministry of Finance has rolled out new registrations for the 2025 state welfare card, aiming to wrap up all the eligibility checks by March 31 next year. A fresh round of financial lifelines is coming with 1,545 baht heading straight into the pockets of those who qualify.

China’s Cosco Shipping invests $110 million in Thailand terminals

Costco Shipping Ports Ltd. has acquired 12.5% and 30% ownership holdings in Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co., (TLT) and Hutchison Laem Chabang Terminal (HLT).

ZHAO Fengnian, the chief accountant, signed the project agreement with collaborating firms at the project signing event in Vietnam on Wednesday, in the presence of ZHU Tao, the chairman of the board of Costco Shipping Ports. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $110 million, which includes the Berth A2
in TLT, Berths A3, C1-C2 and D1-D3 in HLT, where D1-D3 is partly under construction. Continued …

Bangkok housing market set to decline amid poor economy

SCB EIC, the research center of Siam Commercial Bank, predicts that the transfer of new residential units in Greater Bangkok will decline by 10% this year, with a further contraction of 1%-3% projected for 2025, mainly due to the country’s sluggish economy.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rain in 24 provinces and urging vigilance regarding the powerful tropical storm Trami. Northern Thailand will experience cool weather and strong winds, while the southern seas will see high waves.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, particularly in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Cambodian-Thai trade up 10%, tops US$3 billion Jan-Sept

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand continues as usual, reaching over US$3.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, an increase of more than 10% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, after China, the U.S. and Vietnam, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

GDCE statistics show that from January to September, total trade between Cambodia and Thailand amounted to $3.169 billion, up 12.4% from the same period in 2023. Continued …

IMF forecasts 3.2% global growth for 2024-25, with Thailand trailing ASEAN

The global war against inflation has largely been won — and at surprisingly little cost to economic growth, the International Monetary Fund declared Tuesday.

In its latest assessment of the global economy, the IMF predicted that worldwide inflation will cool from 6.7% last year to 5.8% this year and to 4.3% in 2025. It estimates that inflation will fall even faster in the world’s wealthy countries, from 4.6% last year to 2.6% this year and 2% — the target range for most major central banks — in 2025. Thailand has reported 26.08 million arrivals in the nine-month Jan.-Sept. 2024 period, up 30.09% over the same period of 2023. A deeper analysis shows how the country is benefiting from both internal peace and external conflicts as it seeks to safeguard the role of tourism as an economic mainstay in the second year of post-Covid recovery.

It had been earlier hoped, although not targeted, that arrivals would hit the 40 million mark of pre-Covid 2019. Rescuers had the ultimate catch-and-release experience after saving a monster Mekong River catfish that became trapped inside a flooded train station in Thailand. “It was one of the biggest I have seen,” Boonsong Tangrid said of the dramatic rescue, which occurred in Chiang Mai.

Weather warning for heavy rain in 40 provinces

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued another serious weather warning for 40 provinces, urging residents, especially in Bangkok, its surrounding areas, the southern region, and the eastern region, to prepare for heavy rainfall affecting up to 70% of these regions.

In the southern region, the eastern coast will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with some areas getting heavy rain. Provinces affected include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The temperatures will be between 23-25°C at the lowest and 30-34°C at the highest. Suitability index for buying property and a new car continues to fall

The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has reported that the suitability index of purchasing a new car in September 2024 declined for the seventh consecutive month, reaching its lowest point since March 2023. The index for September 2024 was recorded at 67.0, down from 70.2 in August.

In September, 9.7% of consumers believed it was a suitable time to purchase a new car, 47.6% were unsure, and 42.7% deemed it unsuitable. That compares with 10.5%, 49.2% and 40.3% considering it suitable, being unsure or feeling it was unsuitable, respectively. Continued …

Dubai-based global digital infrastructure company EDGNEX Data Centers by DAMAC has announced a joint venture with PROEN Crop, a leading Thailand technology provider, to invest US$1 billion (32 billion baht) in several data center projects in the kingdom.

Heavy rain in Hua Hin and Cha Am are anticipated to impact tourism during the upcoming three-day holiday, potentially worsening domestic visitor numbers. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) identified natural disasters as a critical factor to monitor during the high season.

Earlier this week, continuous rainfall led to flooding in Cha Am, Hua Hin, and parts of Phetkasem Highway, with water levels measuring between 20 and 40 centimeters. Udom Srimahachota, Thai Hotels Assn. Vice president, noted that tourists faced an additional two-hour travel time to reach their destinations in these areas. Medical experts in Thailand are advising high-risk groups to receive boosters for Covid-19, given a recent surge in cases and fatalities. Families of bus fire victims to share 9 million baht

Consumer confidence index plunges to lowest in 14 months

The rising cost of living and the severe flooding in several areas of Thailand are among the reasons the consumer confidence index has once again dropped, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said on Thursday.

UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting reported that Thailand’s consumer confidence index in September stood at 55.3, dropping from 56.5 in July. The index has been falling for seven consecutive months and is now the lowest in 14 months, or since August 2023. Continued …

World Bank lowers Thailand’s GDP growth forecast from 2.8% to 2.4%

The World Bank has reduced Thailand’s GDP growth forecast for 2024 to 2.4%, while projecting that the Chinese economy will decline from 4.8% this year to 4.3% in 2025, owing to a weak property market and low consumer and investor confidence.

The World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific Economic Update forecasts released on Tuesday said that the economy in the East Asia and Pacific region would expand by 4.8% in 2024 but would slow to 4.4% in 2025. Continued …

State revenue collection on course to hit target

The Finance Ministry is confident that revenue collection for fiscal 2024, which ended on Sept. 30, met its target as collections gradually improved, bolstered by higher contributions than expected from the Revenue Department and state-owned enterprises.

Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said the latest report on net revenue collection from the Finance Ministry indicates for the first 11 months of fiscal 2024 (October 2023 to August 2024), the government collected net revenue (after tax refunds) of 2.452 trillion baht, which is 17.4 billion baht or 0.7% less than the target. Approvals granted to 11 out of 14 proposals for industrial estates

Some 14 industrial estates have requested approval for setting up new estates or expanding current ones this year, expecting to support factory investment of 480 billion baht, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) said.

The authority has approved 11 industrial estates, while three others were under consideration, the authority’s director, Sumet Tangprasert, said. Rice prices across major Asian hubs declined to their lowest in more than a year this week, pressured by slow demand and increased supply after top exporter India recently eased restrictions on exports of the staple.

Thai worker killed in northern Israel

One Thai worker was found dead and another suffered a severe concussion after an anti-tank rocket was fired at the Kibbutz Yir’on Agricultural Estate in northern Israel, near the border with Lebanon on Friday morning, according to the Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with very heavy rainfall expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. Flood-related bacterial infections on the rise

Thailand’s Disease Control Department is alerting the public to a rapid rise in cases of Leptospirosis and Melioidosis during the rainy season and floods. They are bacterial infections to which children are particularly prone and which require close monitoring.

Phuket’s reservoirs are bursting at the seams, with Bang Niew Dam in Srisoonthorn now at 103% capacity. The island is bracing for more rain and potential flash floods through Saturday, as the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of continued downpours.

Tourist destinations in the Andaman Sea will reopen next Tuesday (October 15) for the high season until May 15 next year, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation announced on Tuesday.
