25% drop in hotspots sought to reduce air pollution

The government aims to reduce hotspots by 25% this dry season compared to last year to mitigate air pollution, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong.

Thunderstorms to blanket Greater Bangkok as rain refuses to let up

Rain is predicted in Bangkok and its vicinity until Monday, according to the Meteorological Department. The agency on Friday issued a 10-day weather forecast, highlighting varying conditions nationwide.

A weak cold air mass will cover upper Thailand through Saturday, bringing morning fog and cooler weather to the upper parts of the northern and northeastern regions, while easterly and southeasterly winds are expected to bring moisture from the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to the lower northeast, the east, the lower central and the upper south, resulting in thunderstorms in these regions, it said. Another leopard spotted in Kaeng Krachan park

A leopard was spotted wandering around a helipad in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, believed to be waiting for its prey. Mongkol Chaipakdee, chief of the national park, said on Friday that park staff in the Ban Krang area observed the male leopard near the helipad.

The staff first saw the wild animal emerging from the nearby forest. It walked around a restroom area before entering the helipad, amid the cries of dusky leaf monkeys, said Mongkol. Continued …

A herd of over 80 wild elephants from the Thap Lan National Park invaded local farmland in Nakhon Ratchasima, feasting on crops and prompting a night-long operation by officials and volunteers to drive them back into the forest.

Wild elephants have been causing a stir in Nakhon Ratchasima as they forage beyond their natural habitat. What’s behind the rapid weakening of the baht

World’s second-largest solar power plant goes online

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) will start looking into the legal aspects of a small modular reactor project this month to prepare Thailand for using nuclear energy, as observers voice concerns over a decline in domestic gas supply and uncertainty surrounding Thai-Cambodian talks on joint petroleum production in the overlapping claims area (OCA).

Thailand is targeting economic growth of 3.5% in 2025 after 2.7% growth seen this year, and the government will soon consider more stimulus measures and the rollout of phase two of its US$14 billion handout scheme, the finance minister said on Wednesday.

A 95-million-baht renewable energy project in Pattaya has been abandoned after years of neglect, leaving its wind turbines in a state of disrepair. Global EV sales up 35%

Global sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose 35% in October from the same month last year, led by a 54% jump in sales in China, market research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday.

Five Injured in Bus-Truck Collision in Pran Buri

A traffic collision involving a tour bus and a Isuzu four-wheeled truck occurred on yesterday afternoon, leaving five people injured. The crash took place at kilometer marker 237+500 in Pran Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

According to the Prachuap Khiri Khan Highway Police Rescue Radio Center, the bus collided with the truck around 13:55. None of the 20, bus passengers sustained any injuries, but the passengers in the truck, carrying banquet supplies, were less fortunate. Continued …

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms are expected in 70% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, including Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. A delivery rider found himself in a humorous predicament when tasked with transporting a 6-foot mattress on his motorcycle. Baht slumps after US election

The Thai baht reached a two-month low on Thursday, with projections it might dip below 34.5 to the U.S. dollar shortly. This currency pressure follows predictions that the Federal Reserve will maintain higher interest rates longer than anticipated after Donald Trump clinched victory in the recent U.S. election.

According to the Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research), the baht was quoted at 34.34-36 against the dollar, dropping from the prior day’s rate of 34.17. Ultra-luxury houses boom amid slumping property market

Luxury houses priced at more than 100 million baht per unit have enjoyed over 450 billion baht in sales in the past 10 years, with some 394 new units being supplied to the market since 2015, property consultancy firm Colliers International reported on Wednesday.

While the rest of Thailand’s property market is contracting due to the high rejection rate of housing loans by financial institutions, buyers of ultra-luxury houses often pay in cash and therefore do not have to apply for loans, Collier’s research director Phattarachai Taweewong explained. EGAT aims to turn hydropower dams into giant ‘batteries’

Three more hydropower dams operated by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will be developed into giant “batteries” under a 90-billion-baht investment to supply clean power to the country, easing concerns about insufficient electricity generated by solar and wind power.

Southeast Asia is the second most-affected region in the world when it comes to road accidents, after Africa, and Thailand “tragically leads in this statistics”, said UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt on Monday in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, the head of Protected Area Regional Office 8 has filed a police report at Phu Ruea Police Station, urging swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Authorities yesterday discovered the body of a tuskless adult male wild elephant, known as a “Si Dor,” in the Nam Rin stream in Ban Song Khon, Pla Ba subdistrict, Phu Ruea district. Thai Rice Exports Surge 22% in First 9 Months

Thailand exported 7,448,941 tons of rice worth 172.019 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024 (January-September), an increase of 22% in volume and 45.8% in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Rice Exporters Association of Thailand.

He stated that white rice led exports with 4,702,455 tons (up 42%), followed by jasmine rice with 1,233,108 tons (up 9%), parboiled rice with 814,791 tons (down 28.2%), Thai fragrant rice with 487,587 tons (up 42.5%) and glutinous rice with 211,000 tons (up 15.7%). Continued …

Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. High blood pressure was the top medical condition among universal healthcare service outpatients in 2023, according to Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO).

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. The NESDC Office explained that living in their own houses also counted as a cost poor families did not have to bear. Continued …

Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

The company’s managing director, Kessara Thanyalakpark, said that rising household debt was among factors that hurt Bangkokians’ ability to purchase houses. “Currently, there is a disconnect between the demand for housing and the high prices set by property developers,” she said. Continued …

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. In the first nine months, Thailand’s imports amounted to $229.1328 billion, a 5.5% increase, resulting in a trade deficit of $5.9568 billion, or nearly 200 billion baht. Continued …

Foundation documents impact of plastic waste in Thailand

Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Chiang Mai Authority has backed a Thai-Chinese waste-to-energy power plant that is expected to take two years to complete. The joint investment agreement, valued at 2.3 billion baht, was signed on Friday.

Bangkok police detained seven individuals yesterday, including six officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, linked to an elaborate Bt300-million extortion scheme involving a fake search warrant and passport forgery accusations. The suspects, led by Police Lt. Col. Chanchai, are charged with extortion, misconduct, and abuse of power.

Thai economy continued to grow in Q3, but slowed in September

Thailand’s economy in the third quarter this year expanded from the previous quarter, but economic activities began slowing in September, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) said in its monthly report on economic and monetary conditions.

The central bank said the trend in September was mainly the decline of exports after strong growth in August. Private consumption also declined, it said, particularly in durables, consistent with a decrease in manufacturing production, while private investment was stable. Continued …

Thailand’s Winter Expected to Start Oct 29, Colder Than Last Year

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has announced that the 2024 winter season is set to begin on Oct. 29 and is expected to last until late February 2025. This season is anticipated to be colder than last year, with December 2024 to January 2025 marking the coldest period.

According to Dr. Sukanyaniyawinyacharn, acting director-general of the Meteorological Department, the onset of winter is assessed by three factors: a consistent drop in temperatures below 23°C across northern Thailand, a shift to northeast and east winds at lower altitudes, and a gradual decrease in rainfall. Retirement age to go up to 65

The Labor Ministry plans to raise the retirement age for both private and government sectors to 65 years, the same as in Singapore and Switzerland, said Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. Bangkok Braces for Rising PM2.5 Levels Amid Cool Weather

Bangkok is set to experience increased pollution levels over the weekend as PM2.5 particles hang heavy in the air, exacerbated by cool weather and poor circulation, according to the Pollution Control Department. Unsafe PM2.5 concentrations were recorded in 36 areas across the city, with Nong Khaem district leading the pack at 51.1µg/m³.

These fine particulate matters were measured between 19.5µg/m³ and 53.8µg/m³ early this morning. A combination of local climatic conditions and external influences, like the Trami tropical cyclone traversing the South China Sea, is expected to induce more rain next week, which promises to alleviate the pollution. Bangkok, Chiang Mai among world’s worst cities for air pollution

After the floods, air pollution follows in Thailand. Bangkok and Chiang Mai have made it into the top 50 cities worldwide for small dust particle pollution, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir.

A local resident was left in shock after discovering a massive black king cobra, over two meters long, hiding in their parked car. The incident, which took place near Tham Pha Pu Temple in Ban Nam Phu, Loei Province, quickly drew the attention of police and rescue volunteers.

A report about high levels of pesticides found in sampled Shine Muscat grapes has raised fears about food safety, leading many to wonder how many fruits and vegetables sold at markets are laced with toxic chemicals.

(Editor: There have been previous reports that garlic imported from China is grown with toxic chemicals. Hua Hin wet markets and groceries typically carry lower-cost Chinese garlic, which can be identified by the flat bottom of the bulbs.)

Dugong deaths rise in Thailand, as seagrass sources dwindle

Thailand has witnessed a concerning rise in dugong deaths, with eight found dead this month alone. Three of these deaths are believed to be due to the deterioration of seagrass, a crucial food source for these gentle marine mammals.

Trade agreements fuel growth in Thai agricultural exports

Thailand’s agricultural exports grew by 8% year on year in the first eight months of 2024, valued at $19.826 billion, the Department of International Trade Negotiations said. Of the total, 69% of exports were to countries with whom Thailand has free trade agreements, amounting to $13.774 billion (430 billion baht), department Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said.

Violence erupts in Deep South as deadline on Tak Bai case nears

Chinese-grown Shine Muscat grapes contaminated with dangerous chemicals

Shine Muscat grapes imported from China have been found to be heavily laced with dangerous chemicals, including chlorpyrifos, the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-Pan) and the Foundation for Consumers announced.

The two consumer protection organizations recently conducted laboratory tests on 24 samples of the juicy and popular grapes purchased from retail outlets, vendors and wet markets. Nine samples were imported from China, while the remaining 15 samples were imported from unknown sources. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices take a dive

Gold prices have taken a nosedive in Thailand, with gold ornaments now pegged at 44,100 baht per baht weight. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reports a 300-baht drop from yesterday, putting an end to the recent upward streak.

One of the cannabis shop owners in Phuket who fell victim to two foreign thieves, yesterday tracked down the suspects and physically assaulted them at their accommodation.

Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. It added that the government’s state welfare card scheme in 2023 accepted applications from those who had missed the application deadlines in the previous rounds, allowing more people to gain access to state-funded services and benefits. Thailand’s vehicle production hits the brakes

The automotive industry in Thailand has experienced a significant downturn in vehicle production, with September seeing a total of 122,277 units produced, marking a 25.5% decrease from the same period last year.

The Ministry of Finance has rolled out new registrations for the 2025 state welfare card, aiming to wrap up all the eligibility checks by March 31 next year. A fresh round of financial lifelines is coming with 1,545 baht heading straight into the pockets of those who qualify.

Costco Shipping Ports Ltd. has acquired 12.5% and 30% ownership holdings in Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co., (TLT) and Hutchison Laem Chabang Terminal (HLT).

ZHAO Fengnian, the chief accountant, signed the project agreement with collaborating firms at the project signing event in Vietnam on Wednesday, in the presence of ZHU Tao, the chairman of the board of Costco Shipping Ports. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $110 million, which includes the Berth A2

Bangkok housing market set to decline amid poor economy

SCB EIC, the research center of Siam Commercial Bank, predicts that the transfer of new residential units in Greater Bangkok will decline by 10% this year, with a further contraction of 1%-3% projected for 2025, mainly due to the country’s sluggish economy.

Thailand braces for tropical storm and cool winds in 24 provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rain in 24 provinces and urging vigilance regarding the powerful tropical storm Trami. Northern Thailand will experience cool weather and strong winds, while the southern seas will see high waves.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, particularly in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. A huge fish in the Mekong River thought to be extinct has been spotted three times in recent years. “The giant salmon carp is like a symbol of the Mekong region,” said Chheana Chhut, a researcher at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Casino Complex Law Set to Reach Thai Cabinet by Year-End

Cambodian-Thai trade up 10%, tops US$3 billion Jan-Sept

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand continues as usual, reaching over US$3.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, an increase of more than 10% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, after China, the U.S. and Vietnam, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

GDCE statistics show that from January to September, total trade between Cambodia and Thailand amounted to $3.169 billion, up 12.4% from the same period in 2023. Continued …

IMF forecasts 3.2% global growth for 2024-25, with Thailand trailing ASEAN

The global war against inflation has largely been won — and at surprisingly little cost to economic growth, the International Monetary Fund declared Tuesday.

In its latest assessment of the global economy, the IMF predicted that worldwide inflation will cool from 6.7% last year to 5.8% this year and to 4.3% in 2025. It estimates that inflation will fall even faster in the world’s wealthy countries, from 4.6% last year to 2.6% this year and 2% — the target range for most major central banks — in 2025. Thailand is gearing up to impose a 300-baht tourism tax, initially targeting air travel, possibly starting within the next six months.

Tweaks needed for northern Thailand tourism project

The new co-payment tourism promotion program for northern destinations in Thailand will need an upgrade in terms of both the amount of subsidies from the government and number of tourists to receive them, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.

The total budget for this program, Aeo Nuea Khon La Khrueng (travel to the north at half prices), will unlikely reach 24 billion baht as in the past program because the new one will be split into five phases for continuous economic stimulus effects, he said. Continued …

Thailand has reported 26.08 million arrivals in the nine-month Jan.-Sept. 2024 period, up 30.09% over the same period of 2023. A deeper analysis shows how the country is benefiting from both internal peace and external conflicts as it seeks to safeguard the role of tourism as an economic mainstay in the second year of post-Covid recovery.

It had been earlier hoped, although not targeted, that arrivals would hit the 40 million mark of pre-Covid 2019. Cabinet set to approve new contract for rail project linking 3 airports

The amended contract for the high-speed rail project linking three airports is now in the final phase and will be presented to the cabinet for approval next Tuesday (October 29), the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) said.

Metropolitan Police in Bangkok have issued warnings to tourists, particularly those carrying cash or valuables, in the most popular areas of the capital. The first warning comes after the arrest on Oct. 18th of an Iranian tourist who had targeted tourists while purporting to be a police officer. The culprit would identify cash in their belongings and appropriate a portion before escaping in a car.
