Every time a complaint about tourism scams or inflated prices goes viral, Pattaya is usually the first name dragged into the conversation. Beach chairs, jet skis, taxis, drinks — Pattaya has long been portrayed as the poster child for tourist rip-offs. Double cold front to hit Thailand after New Year

Pongnakorn Pochakorn, assistant spokesperson for the Finance Ministry, said preliminary figures showed spending under the Khon La Khreung Plus scheme reached 84.19 billion baht before it ended on Dec. 31. A total of 19.76 million people used the scheme.

The total comprised two parts: Public spending: 42.81 billion baht, including 41.25 billion baht spent at general participating shops and 1.55 billion baht spent via food delivery platforms. Thailand tourism slips in 2025 despite domestic growth

Thailand’s tourism performance in 2025 declined, with foreign arrivals falling and total tourism revenue edging lower, even as domestic travel continued to rise, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

The Thai Bankers Assn. (TBA) has announced that starting Feb. 14, 2026, all mobile banking apps in Thailand will support only iOS 14 and Android 10 or higher. This move is in response to the growing cybersecurity threats, especially attacks targeting devices with outdated operating systems, which are vulnerable to data theft, financial fraud, and malware installation.

According to the TBA, this change is a preventive measure aimed at reducing risks from various cybersecurity threats, such as malware, phishing, data interception over public networks, and remote control of devices. Outdated smartphones, particularly those no longer receiving security updates from their manufacturers, will no longer be able to access mobile banking apps starting Feb. 14. Continued …

Police Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiewphan said 104 deceased victims had been sent for identification, marking a rise from the previously confirmed 85 fatalities. A Democrat Party MP described the scene in Hat Yai today as “apocalyptic” on the first day that floodwaters have receded, and residents, who had been trapped in their homes for days, were finally able to leave, searching for food, clean water, and medical assistance.

Official shelters at several locations in Songkhla have become overcrowded with people whose homes and belongings were destroyed by the flooding. People are scrambling for food, evacuation centers are disorganized, corpses have floated in and have to be placed along the roadside, and the cries of people in distress lasted through the night. Minister admits government misjudged Hat Yai flood situation

Paradorn Prissanananthakul, minister attached to the prime minister’s office, acknowledged the government’s failure in assessing the Hat Yai flood crisis yesterday. As Director of the Emergency Flood Crisis Operations Center, he responded to questions from the media about when the government would admit its misjudgment, which led to the deaths of many people.

A youth delegate from an indigenous tribe in Brazil said something at COP30 that made my brow rise the first time I heard it: everyone is closer to being displaced than becoming a billionaire. I understood the sentence, but it didn’t sink in. Not the way it does now, watching what is happening in Thailand.

Many people still believe climate disasters happen to “other people”. And yet these same people repost updates, donate to relief, criticize the government, and talk about structural change. But I wonder if we truly understand the scale of what is unfolding. We act like observers helping “them”, without realizing this is not about “them.” It is about us. Continued …

More rain forecast for Thailand’s south

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) reported yesterday that a moderate northeast monsoon continues to prevail over the Gulf of Thailand, the south, and the Andaman Sea, bringing reduced rainfall overall, though isolated heavy rains are still expected in the lower south.

Hat Yai District Chief dismissed for neglecting duties during flood crisis

The Department of Provincial Administration, under the Ministry of the Interior, announced yesterday the dismissal of Eak Young-Apai Na Songkhla, the Hat Yai district chief, after an investigation revealed that he had not been present in his area of responsibility since Nov. 22.

The Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) has proposed a 60-day relief framework to ease the impact on tourism businesses caused by severe flooding in the south, with damages estimated at more than 10 billion baht.

Indian Stepfather Arrested for Killing of 8-Year-Old Boy in Cha-am

Police in Cha-am have arrested an Indian man suspected of brutally killing his eight-year-old stepson at their home in Hua Sai Tai community. The man, identified as Kanthoran Singh, aged 33, was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting the boy, who was found dead with multiple injuries. The suspect has denied all charges.

The child’s body was discovered on Sunday inside the house he shared with Singh. Police responding to the scene found the boy lying motionless with foam around his mouth, bruising on his body and bloodstains on the bed. His body was sent to Phra Chom Klao Hospitalfor a detailed autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Continued …

19 Rai public park to get a makeover

Hua Hin City Municipality has announced plans to upgrade the 19 Rai public park at Suan Luang Queen’s Park. The park, widely used by residents for walking, exercise, and leisure, is considered an important green space in the city.

According to the municipality, the project will prioritize maintaining existing trees to preserve shade throughout the park. Additional trees will also be planted to expand green coverage. While the Thai baht has fluctuated over the past decade, foreign tourists say the currency swings rarely impact their vacations. One long-time visitor recalls arriving in Thailand in 2015 when the exchange rate was about 30 baht to the USD. Today, it hovers around 32. Over the years, it has peaked at 38 and dropped as low as 29.

The Marine Department is preparing to allocate more than 249 million baht for a sand-nourishment project to prevent coastal erosion along Cha-am Beach. The initiative is part of efforts to restore the beach, which has been affected by long-term erosion linked to natural processes and coastal development. Hua Hin celebrated Loy Krathong last night, with residents gathering at several locations across the city to take part in one of Thailand’s most recognizable annual cultural traditions. This year’s Loy Krathong celebrations in Hua Hin were scaled back following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, but the events continued in a respectful and reflective manner.

At Khao Tao Reservoir, families and groups of friends released krathongs made from natural materials such as banana leaves and bread into the water as part of the long-standing tradition of paying respect to the Goddess of Water and symbolically letting go of misfortune. Bribery probe deepens police credibility crisis

The reputation of the Royal Thai Police (RTP) has suffered a significant blow following a decision by the Police Complaints Review Committee (PCRC) to formally accuse former National Police Chief Torsak Sukvimol and more than 200 police officers of disciplinary misconduct for allegedly accepting bribes from online gambling networks.

Thailand to Tax All Online Shopping Imports Starting 2026

In a significant policy shift, Thailand’s Customs Department announced today that starting Jan. 1, 2026, all foreign goods sold online will face an import duty if valued at more than 1 baht. This move will end the current exemption for items priced below 1,500 baht, which will expire at the end of this year.

The introduction of this duty, alongside the existing value-added tax (VAT), is predicted to generate at least 3 billion Thai baht annually for the government. The improving global economy is expected to boost Thai exports by 9.5%-10% this year, higher than previously estimated, but Thailand will not gain significantly from the growth, says the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB). The headline consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.76% year-on-year to 100 in October, marking the seventh straight month of decline, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

EV and PPV boost car production in September, while pickup truck sales decline

Automotive Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported that in September car production grew by 14% compared to the previous month, driven largely by the increase in electric vehicles (EVs) and pickup passenger vehicles (PPVs). However, pickup truck production declined, impacted by the challenging economic conditions and stricter lending policies.

A total of 128,104 cars were produced in September 2025, reflecting a 14% increase from August and a 4.8% increase from September 2024. This growth is mainly attributed to the increased production of electric passenger vehicles (EVs), which compensate for the reduced imports of EVs into the country in 2023-2024. Thailand’snational parks have collected approximately 2.2 billion baht in entrance and accommodation fees from tourists in fiscal year 2025, announced the chief of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) yesterday.

Atthapol Charoenshunsa, DNP director-general, stated that the revenue from tourists between October 2024 and September 2025 rose by 8.39 million baht, or 0.38%, compared to the same period last year. Forest Taskforce Probes Kaeng Krachan Land Grab

A special taskforce from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) has launched an investigation into alleged forest encroachment and destruction in Kaeng Krachan National Park and adjacent state land in Hua Hin district, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The probe follows reports that investors have cleared forested hillsides and excavated soil in protected zones.

The taskforce is examining claims of land ownership under Nor Sor 3 Kor documents allegedly covering 3,162 rai — 2,016 rai of state property and 1,146 rai within the national park. Investigators found new evidence of encroachment beyond these documents, totaling 914 rai, 81 rai within the park and 833 rai of state land. Bus crashes in Hua Hin, 8 students injured

Eight student cadets were injured when a Hua Hin–Pranburi route bus skidded on a rain-soaked road and crashed into a power pole while descending Khao Dang Pass yesterday. Police have charged the driver with reckless driving and damaging government property.

Man Trampled to Death by Wild Elephant in Phu Wua Forest

A 55-year-old man was found dead after being attacked by a wild elephant in the Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary in Bueng Kan province. The discovery followed a three-day search after the man was reported missing by his relatives.

Authorities believe he encountered the elephant at close range while collecting forest produce and was trampled to death. Preliminary examinations indicated that the man sustained fatal injuries consistent with being attacked by a wild elephant. Thailand’s exports grew at the slowest pace in nearly a year in August due to the impact of US tariffs, which is expected to be more pronounced from September to December, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary-general of the Board of Investment (BOI), has revealed that in the first half of 2025 foreign direct investment (FDI) and domestic investments led to 1,880 investment promotion projects, a 38% increase compared to the same period last year. The total investment value reached 1.05 trillion baht, a rise of 138%.

The eastern region led the way in investment applications, with 1,010 projects, accounting for 54% of all projects. Thailand’s tourism industry is facing a significant downturn, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) forecasting 33.4 million foreign arrivals this year. Family fun in northern Thailand

Five days in northern Thailand over Thanksgiving was the perfect amount of time to experience many of the highlights, including an overnight in Chiang Rai. November in northern Thailand typically has milder temperatures, which makes it the perfect time of year to visit.

We arrived late in the evening on the first day and took a shuttle van from the airport (they provided car seats) that our Airbnb host had arranged for us. Upon arrival at the Airbnb, we put the kids to bed (it was the best little farm stay) and then were served a welcome dinner that was one of our top meals of the week.
