14 Thai hospitals report quake damage

Donations for Jungle Aid sought Oct 26

To celebrate their 7th anniversary, the Hua Hin Ladies (HHL) are seeking donations of rice on Thursday, Oct. 26, with the donations given to Jungle Aid.

Donations should be dropped off at Cheers Restaurant & Bar any time from 9am until closing. Those attending the HHL party that day can bring donations the evening of Oct. 26.

Canned fish, soap, and toothbrushes and toothpaste are also welcomed. Last year, the event collected 715 kg of rice, 220 cans of fish, and 150 bars of soap.

BMW unit to settle EV plant plan by year-end

BMW Group Thailand will finalize its plan to build an electric vehicle (EV) factory in Thailand within this year, as the Munich-based premium car manufacturer joins other automakers worldwide in seeking to take advantage of opportunities in the EV industry, which is being strongly backed by the government.

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

New electricity tariff approved, reducing power bills to end of year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved a new electricity tariff of 3.99 baht per kilowatt-hour, a reduction aimed at decreasing power bills for households and businesses for the remaining four months of this year.

In its initial meeting on Sept.13, the cabinet agreed to lower the electricity tariff from 4.45 baht to 4.10 baht per unit. However, in a subsequent meeting on Sept. 18, it resolved to further reduce the rate to 3.99 baht per unit. Continued …

The remains of a Bryde’s whale was towed by trawler to Cha Am beach, near a fishing pier in Phetchaburi province yesterday, after it was found floating at sea, about five kilometers from the shore.

Commerce Ministry revises inflation forecast amid falling prices

Thailand celebrates its national flag today

The design of Thailand’s flag was adopted on Sept. 28, 1917, and since 2016, that day has been marked as a national day.

Downpours continue for much of Thailand

Scattered heavy rain, torrential in some areas, is forecast for the north, the northeast, the central including the Bangkok metropolitan area, the east, and the south of Thailand today and tomorrow, the Thai Meteorological Department warned today.

Factory output down 7.5%, bigger than forecast

Thailand’s manufacturing production index (MPI) in August dropped 7.53% from a year earlier, the Industry Ministry said today, as exports were sluggish amid soft global demand.

BoT hikes interest rate to 10-year high

The Bank of Thailand on Wednesday raised its benchmark interest rate to the highest level in 10 years, as it moved pre-emptively to check inflationary pressures from the government’s proposed economic stimulus.

The central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted unanimously to increase the one-day repurchase rate by a quarter-point to 2.50%, as predicted by 10 of 21 economists in a Bloomberg survey. The rest had expected no change. Continued …

Baht expected to continue its slide

Economists are warning the baht will weaken further throughout this month and next because of higher volatility in money and capital markets worldwide after the U.S. Federal Reserve’s hawkish comments about its benchmark interest rate.

Poon Panitchpibun, money market strategist at Krungthai Global Markets, a research center of Krungthai Bank, said the baht opened on Thursday at 36.25 to the U.S. dollar, depreciating from the previous day’s close of 36.07. Continued …

Landscaping of beach road a priority?

Hua Hin municipal officials plan to improve the landscaping of the road leading to City Beach. At a meeting yesterday, the Sanitation and Environment Division was told to improve the landscape down to the beach front.

Given that the road is lined almost in its entirety with businesses and vendor stalls, where landscaping would be installed is a question, as is whether the cost of such landscaping is even necessary. The only break in the vendor lineup are the two Centara entrances.

Previously, “beautification” of the road involved new asphalt, as well as building vendor buildings to replace the makeshift stalls that were present. The result has been a narrowing of the pathway that accommodates motorcycles as well as pedestrians. The vendor improvements were made after a fire near the beach destroyed several stalls.

Officials did recommend also that the road be kept clean and that more trash bins would be installed.

Hua Hin seeks approval to hold long-tail boat racing event Nov 17-19

The Hua Hin municipality has submitted a formal request to provincial officials for the green light to host its annual long-tail boat racing event at Khao Tao reservoir in November.

The heart of the discussion revolved around the municipality’s request for the continuation of the longboat racing event. This event traditionally occurs every November to December at the Khao Tao reservoir, a project that was initiated by royal directive. Continued …

Continuous thundershowers are forecast for most of the country today, with isolated heavy rains in the lower central region, including metropolitan Bangkok, and the east, according to the Meteorological Department.

Intense plankton bloom threatens Chon Buri’s marine life and mussel farms

A severe plankton bloom, unusually dense in nature, has emerged off the eastern coast of Chon Buri province, leading to the formation of what marine scientists are referring to as an aquatic “dead zone.” This situation poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of local fishermen and the operations of mussel farms in the region.

(Editor note: Plankton blooms such as this one are generally caused by chemical runoffs from farm activities. With the Chao Phraya River emptying into the Gulf, and carrying runoff from Thailand’s farming heartland, such dead zones are likely to continue, and worsen.)

More than 6% of all Thais still live on less than 2,803 baht per month

Although poverty has decreased in Thailand, incomes have risen and income inequality has decreased, disparities persist and require attention, the National Economic and Social Development Council said in a report.

The report put the poverty line at 2,686 baht per month per person in 2017 and at 2,803 baht per month per person in 2021. It focused on poverty under the government of former prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his 12th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2017-2021). Continued …

A woman’s late-night drive took a slithery turn when a python surprised her by emerging from the engine compartment after she returned from a meal. At around 1am today, emergency services from the Thung Mahamek Fire Station were called to a parking lot in front of a convenience store in the Yan Nawa district of Bangkok.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin set up a committee on Tuesday to oversee the implementation of his government’s much-publicized 10,000 baht digital wallet scheme.
