Bangkok PM2.5 tipped to worsen until Monday

Many parts of Bangkok have been blanketed in PM2.5 haze this week due to poor air circulation and an increase in hotspots in the provinces and neighboring countries, said Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt.

The poor air quality was reported not only in the capital but also in the central and northeastern provinces, and the dust pollution stemmed from stagnant air, burning of crops and weeds, and the wind blowing from the east, he said. Continued …

But for people familiar with the stories of a city of scammers located in a border town in Myanmar, it is not difficult to feel the gravity of terror inflicted on the woman who raised such a question.

Bitcoin mine in Chonburi shut down for massive electricity theft

The Crime Suppression Division (CSD) joined forces with the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) yesterday to shut down a Bitcoin mining operation in the Phanat Nikhom district of Chonburi after discovering it had tampered with its power meter to use electricity for mining purposes, largely free of charge.

CSD officers and PEA officials seized 996 Bitcoin mining machines and other related devices from the premises. PEA officials estimated that the operation had stolen electricity worth hundreds of millions of baht, although the exact figure has yet to be determined. Continued …

Expats in Thailand warned of scams targeting bank accounts

A chief of police issued a warning to retirees in Thailand after two British expats in Pattaya were targetted by scammers attempting to drain their bank accounts. Police Lt. Col. Saksit Choobunrueang yesterday, announced that the elderly are being targetted by scam gangs because of their limited knowledge of technology.

The retirees, both residents of Thailand, received separate phone calls from the fraudsters claiming they might not need to register for a TIN (tax identification number), provided some routine checks confirmed their exemption. Continued …

Air pollution hazardous or moderately dangerous to health was detected in 58 out of 77 provinces across Thailand this morning.

Air pollution soars in Thai capital again, surpassing safety standards

Bangkok was ranked ninth among countries with the poorest air quality worldwide today. The capital’s air quality index surged to 163 as of 9am, higher than the safe standard of 0-50, according to the IQAir website.

Meanwhile, air quality in 64 areas of Bangkok was again below the safety standard this morning, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s Air Quality Information Center said. Continued …

Upper Thailand to get colder, heavy rain forecast for south

Another strong high-pressure system from China will extend to Thailand and the South China Sea from Friday to Monday, causing a decrease in temperature and strong winds in the area, the Thai Meteorological Department said in a weather warning today.

A decrease of 5-7 °C is likely in the north and the northeast regions, and temperatures will drop by 3-5 °C in the central region, including Bangkok metropolitan area, the east and the upper south during the same period, the department said. Continued …

Big boost in air travel over the New Year holiday

Red-level air pollution blankets most of Thailand

Only seven out of 77 provinces in Thailand had safe air to breathe and most provinces including the capital were blanketed with red levels of hazardous ultrafine dust this morning.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 8am that 39 provinces were shrouded with “red” hazardous-to-health levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Continued …

Bangkok Air Pollution Reaches Hazardous Levels

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has stepped up the battle against Thailand’s air pollution crisis, with PM2.5 fine particulate matter levels reaching hazardous levels. Following a cabinet meeting, she has prolonged the directive to engage various ministries to anchor efforts in achieving lower pollution levels than last year.

After the meeting, Paetongtarn highlighted the concerning rise in dust levels across provinces, as evidenced by satellite images revealing more heat spots. Colder weather moving in from Friday

Temperatures are forecast to fall sharply in most regions of the country from this Friday due to the arrival of a high pressure system from China.

Sukanyanee Yawinchan, director-general of the meteorological department, said today that from Friday this week to Monday next week temperatures would drop by 5-7°C in the north and northeast, and 2-5°C in the Central Plains and Bangkok, east and upper south. Continued …

Cheaper electricity costs targeted

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has hinted at the possibility of bringing household electricity costs down after her father, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, said that the price could be reduced to 3.70 baht per unit this year, from 4.15 baht now. Paetongtarn said this was one of the government’s priorities to ease the rising cost of living.

Thai household costs surge: survey reveals rising living expenses

A recent survey conducted by the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) at the Ministry of Commerce has revealed a significant increase in Thai households’ living expenses. The survey found that average monthly household expenditure in December reached 18,207 baht.

TPSO Director Poonpong Nayanapakorn highlighted a 1.23% rise in headline inflation in December 2024, with the Consumer Price Index reaching 108.28 compared with 106.96 in December 2023. An 18-year- old boy has been arrested after attacking his mother’s ex-husband yesterday with a machete, severing his arm in a fit of rage. The incident, captured on video, occurred in the Prachuap Siri area of Prachuap Khiri Khan municipality, leaving the 54-year-old victim critically injured.

The violent altercation reportedly began as an argument outside a grocery store, where the teenager confronted the man for insulting his biological father. A retired nurse from Trang’s Mueang district has traded scrubs for feathers, earning a tidy nest egg by raising ostriches and selling their eggs and chicks. Expat tax returns due by March 31

Editor: We posted this news Saturday but several of our readers reported that the online site is in Thai only. We checked and translation is available in English, and in other languages if you use most any major Google or Microsoft platform – by right-clicking on the site. However, we found navigating the site dificult and could not find where to even start a filing.

There is also the question of how the dozens of dual tax treaties will be handled online – 95% of expats residing in Thailand reportedly come from countries with dual tax treaties with Thailand. Each one of those treaties is different. (information provided by Thai Examiner)

Highlights:
  • All income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year is declarable;
  • all expats who have been residents of Thailand for 180 days or more in the course of the last year are liable to file a return;
  • taxpayers should use the D-MyTax (Digital MyTax) system;
  • the income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin;
  • for most foreign expats on basic incomes such as Bt60,000 a month, the tax bill is approximately Bt11,000;
  • only electronic forms will be accepted until April 8, 2025; paper returns must be received by the end of March;
  • the return pertains to taxable income earned within Thailand and remitted to Thailand during 2024;
  • 95% of foreign expats originate from countries that have tax treaties with Thailand,
  • each country’s treaty with the kingdom is substantially different;
  • each individual residing in Thailand has unique circumstances, complicating the matter, particularly with the differences in tax treaties;
  • it is unclear how each individual’s situation will be treated;
  • the Thai government is reportedly drafting legislation to increase the tax burden on foreign residents, meaning that foreign residents in the kingdom will eventually be liable to pay tax on their worldwide income;
  • an independent survey showed that 16% of people plan to take professional advice, while a full 58% would not file a return at all;
  • 55% of expats in the survey are considering relocating to avoid spending 180 days in the country.

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

Changes to tax regulations in 2023 make The income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin. The question now is how many foreign taxpayers will file returns between now and March 31. After that, it remains to be seen if follow-up actions will be taken against those who fail to do so. Tiger spotted in Kui Buri after a decade

The festive period has turned deadly for many, with a toll of 393 fatalities and 2,251 injuries reported over the past nine days of New Year travel. Authorities have attributed the alarming figures to reckless driving, with speeding identified as the primary cause of crashes.

Expat tax returns due by March 31

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

To file online 

Changes to tax regulations in 2023 make all income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year declarable. The income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin. The question now is how many foreign taxpayers will file returns between now and March 31. After that, it remains to be seen if follow-up actions will be taken against those who fail to do so. US surgeon general sounds alarm about link between alcohol and cancer

U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued an advisory Friday warning Americans that alcohol consumption can increase their cancer risk and called for an updated health warning label on alcoholic beverages.

Surgeon general’s advisories are strongly stated warnings meant to deliver clear messages about health risks. Advisories are uncommon and reserved for issues that need immediate awareness and action. First 7 dangerous days claim 321 lives, fatalities up 13%

Forty-three people were killed and 200 injured in road accidents across Thailand on Thursday, the seventh of the “10 dangerous days” of the New Year holidays.

The casualties were recorded in 196 road crashes, the Road Safety Directing Center of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported yesterday. From Dec. 27 to Jan. 2, a total of 321 people were reported killed and 1,894 injured in 1,938 traffic accidents across the country. Continued …

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather alert for 10 provinces, warning of heavy monsoons affecting 30% of the area. Northern Thailand is experiencing another cold front, leading to further temperature drops.

Road Crashes Claim 272 Lives Over New Year’s Dangerous First Six Days

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has released its latest figures for road accidents during the New Year festivities. On Jan. 1 alone, 50 fatalities were recorded, bringing the total death toll to 272 over the notorious first “six dangerous days.”

Electricity prices in line for reduction this year

Whether Thailand’s electricity prices rise or fall after April 2025 needs to be closely watched, following the state decision to trim the power tariff to 4.15 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), down from 4.18 baht per unit in 2024.

Thailand’s roads have proven deadly once again during the New Year holiday season, with 215 lives lost just five days into the “10 Dangerous Days” road safety campaign, officials revealed today.

The statistics were announced by Somsak Thepsuthin, minister of public health and head of the New Year Road Safety Command Center, during a press briefing at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Coach Crash in Surat Thani Leaves Five Dead and Many Injured

A coach crash late last night on Route 41 in Surat Thani province has left five dead and dozens injured. The incident occurred near the Pa We intersection in Chaiya district, where the coach rolled onto its side and crashed into a tree.

The vehicle, a green and white Hino air-conditioned coach with license plate from Nakhon Pathom, was carrying approximately 38 passengers, most of whom were elderly tourists returning from a trip to Betong, Yala province. Crackdown on Drink Driving

As the New Year celebrations are underway, courts in Thailand have taken a firm stance on driving offenses. On Dec. 30, the fourth day of the “10 Dangerous Days” campaign, 2,032 cases were sent to probation processes.

Dairy products from Australia, New Zealand to become cheaper

The zero tariff on dairy products from Australia and New Zealand took full effect yesterday after a 20-year-long transitional period, with the Cooperative Promotion Department (CPD) warning local dairy farmers and cooperatives to prepare for the potential impact.

CPD Director-general Visit Srisuwan said the removal of tariffs could affect local dairy farmers, and urged them and their cooperatives to enhance milk quality and reduce production costs. Holiday road accidents claim 143 lives across Thailand

The number of road accidents in the first three days of New Year holiday travel neared 900, with more than 140. fatalities. Ayutthaya recorded the most accidents while Bangkok logged the most deaths.

Thai police are searching for three Korean tourists who were occupants of the room where a deadly fire originated at The Ember Hotel near Khao San Road, Bangkok. The Sunday night blaze resulted in three foreign tourist fatalities due to smoke inhalation.

During an inspection of the fire scene uesterday, Amorn Pimanmas, president of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, reported that the six-story hotel’s structure on Tani Road remained intact. Elephants to get birth control shots to limit population

45th Dugong Carcass Found in the Andaman Sea in 2024

A male juvenile dugong, emaciated and with barnacles attached to its body, was discovered washed ashore near the Ban Bo Mamuang Pier in Khlong Thom District, Krabi. This marks the 45th dugong carcass found in the Andaman Sea this year.

Preliminary examinations revealed that the carcass belonged to a male dugong measuring 200 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 100 kilograms. The animal was not yet fully grown and appeared malnourished. No significant injuries or fishing-related wounds were found. This discovery is the third dugong carcass reported in the last four days. 57 sugar mills ordered to suspend operations until Jan 2 to address air pollution

2024’s elephant tragedy sparks soul-searching on safety of national icon

Tall, strong and excellent swimmers, it’s hard to imagine that elephants – Thailand’s national emblem – could succumb to floodwaters. So, when news emerged that two elephants had drowned in floods that struck Chiang Mai in October, shock and dismay rippled through Thai society.

On Oct. 5, two elephants were found dead in the Mae Taeng River, six kilometers from their home at the Elephant Nature Park in the northern capital. Park staff identified the drowned creatures as 16-year-old Fah Sai and 40-year-old Ploy Thong. The latter was blind. Continued …

15% multinational corporate tax begins Jan 1

The Royal Gazette website yesterday published a royal decree for the top-up tax on multinational corporations operating in Thailand, to come into effect on Jan. 1. The top-up tax is a mechanism designed to ensure that multinational corporations pay a minimum level of corporate income tax, typically aligned with the global minimum tax (GMT) initiative led by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

If a multinational corporation pays corporate income tax at a rate below 15%, it will need to pay the difference (to reach 15%) in the country where its parent company is headquartered. Thailand’s imposition of top-up tax will allow corporations to pay the difference in the kingdom instead. Continued …

GDP growth under pressure amid threat of US tariff hikes

Thai GDP might expand at a slower pace in 2025 than the projected growth of 2.6% this year, as the policies of U.S. president-elect Donald Trump could put pressure on exports, which have rebounded significantly to become a major growth driver of the economy.
