“I’m amazed by the everyday weather forecast on Hua Hin News. It’s always the same, i.e. Huge deluge, storms, big rain, floods etc. but in reality it’s got nothing to do with Hua Hin. Why is it appearing on this local news? I wish we had some rain but it’s tiring to read everyday the same news which doesn’t affect us in a slightest and doesn’t happen.” – Pinky

13 million speed pills seized in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Highway police seized over 13 million methamphetamine pills and arrested two couriers in Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan on Monday.

The discovery was made when officers stopped a 22-wheel trailer truck with a Songkhla license plate at a checkpoint at kilometer marker 378 of Phetkasem Road, police said at a briefing in Bangkok on Tuesday. Continued …

Death toll in bus blaze tragedy rises to 22 students, 3 teachers

The death toll from a devastating bus blaze tragedy on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok has soared to 25. Among the victims were 22 young students and three teachers.

According to a grim update, the ill-fated coach was packed with 44 students, aged between three and nine, along with their teachers from Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani. Thailand needs to revamp its rules for school bus operations

As details emerge of the gruesome school bus fire yesterday that claimed the lives of 22 young children and three teachers, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport need to start to ponder on the revamping the rules governing use of vehicles used for transporting children.

In the early afternoon incident yesterday, the three teachers in the back were unable to open the emergency exit’doors and were reportedly covering the students when their charred bodies were found by the forensic team. Water levels in Phitsanulok rise as Yom River receives upstream runoff

The flooding in Phitsanulok province, particularly in the Bang Rakam Model area, is being impacted by the overflow from the Yom River basin, which is flooding both the old and main channels of the Yom River. The affected areas include Phrom Phiram, Mueang and Bang Rakam districts.

The Bang Rakam flood retention field, part of the project to manage floodwaters after the harvest season, has now exceeded its capacity, holding 440 million cubic meters of water (110%). The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for severe weather across Thailand, predicting heavy rains in 80% of Bangkok and surrounding areas, with a high risk of flash floods and landslides.

The TMD forecasts that the upper regions of Thailand will experience unstable weather conditions over the next 24 hours. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain are expected in some north and northeast areas. Python pops into Pattaya mall

A bustling Pattaya City mall turned into a scene of chaos when a nearly 3-meter- long python made an unexpected appearance. The incident, which occurred Monday, saw the Pattaya Land Disaster Prevention Radio Center receiving a report of a large snake spotted under a car in the mall’s parking lot on Pattaya Klang Road.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a crowd of onlookers, comprising both locals and tourists. The python was first seen coiled around the tire of a white Nissan sedan. When officers attempted to capture it, the snake became startled, slithering away and seeking refuge under another vehicle, a green Toyota. Bank of Thailand Intervenes to Manage Baht’s Exchange Rate

The Bank of Thailand has confirmed its active intervention to manage the value of the baht against the U.S. dollar, aiming to ensure the currency’s fluctuations are in sync with regional currencies.

Minister pledges Bt400 daily wage by year’s end

The Labor Ministry has given assurances that the 400-baht minimum wage will be introduced nationwide by the end of the year, according to Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Cash transfers reach 14 million Thais

The Finance Ministry has deemed the first round of the cash handout program as successful at stimulating the economy, as more than 14 million people received transfers. Only 2% of the transfers were unsuccessful, said Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO).

The transfers went to state welfare cardholders and people with disabilities in the first phase from Sept. 25-30, said Pornchai. Continued …

New Gulf power plant starts operating in Rayong

Gulf Energy Development has started commercial operation of a new gas-fired power generating unit in Rayong to support the company’s long-term electricity sales to the state grid.

Digital travel platform Agoda has unveiled the top destinations in Asia that travelers visit specifically for a culinary trip, and it’s South Korea that takes the crown for foodies on the move.

No less than 64% of travelers to South Korea shared with Agoda that South Korea’s culinary delights are their main reason for traveling. Airbnb reports 30% surge in Thailand bookings

As Thailand’s tourism sees a resurgence and the industry prepares for the start of the upcoming high season in Q4, Airbnb has released Thailand travel data for the first half of this year. The data shows an increasing interest in travel to Thailand among guests, with combined domestic and international bookings surging over 30% in H1 2024 compared to H1 2023.

Travel habits among international and domestic travelers were similar, with Bangkok the #1 most-booked destination in Thailand by Airbnb guests in H1 2024. The Perfect Place For Your Next Golfing Getaway

The brown circles stretching across the grass didn’t initially grab my attention as the caddie drove down the fairway at Khao Yai Country Club. Unfortunately, as anyone who has ever tried to get a train from Hua Hin to Bangkok knows, there is only one train a day which leaves at a useful time, takes a reasonable time, and goes to the central station: Train #40, 14.36 from Hua Hin. Thai Chamber Predicts GDP Growth Surge from Digital Cash Stimulus

Business debt is now nearly as high as household debt, manufacturing faces contraction

The head of one of Thailand’s key economic agencies highlighted another critical problem for the economy. In the course of explaining a projected contraction in manufacturing for 2024, Worawan Chitarun of the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) underlined the sky-high level of business debt acting like a weight on economic development.

In short, this is in addition to household debt. Presently, Thailand’s level of business debt is 87.6% of GDP, nearly the same as the country’s household debt level, which is 90.8% of GDP. Continued …

Fiscal 2024 sees highest revenue for Thai Treasury Dept in 91 years

The Treasury Department reported total earnings of 14.38 billion baht for fiscal 2024, making this the highest revenue earned in 91 years, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said on Monday. He noted that this figure represents a 57.9% increase from the previous fiscal year’s revenue and is 25.4% higher than projected.

Paopoom attributed this surge in revenue to the department’s expedited bidding and leasing contracts for its properties, as well as the extension of contracts with major tenants. Only four out of more than 26,000 businesses in Thailand inspected by the Business Development Department were found to be illegally operating through nominees, while 64 others were found to have violated the accounting law.

Surge in Chinese arrivals, tourism income expected during Golden Week

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimates that between 132,000 and 183,000 Chinese tourists will enter Thailand during China’s Golden Week which runs from today until Oct. 7.

FED (Foundation for Education and Development) in Thailand announced that the Thai government has allowed undocumented workers from four countries, including Myanmar, to make new registrations and accompanying children under the age of 18 to stay legally in Thailand.

All police stations nationwide are being alerted to guard banks where “fragile” groups of people are withdrawing 10,000 baht handouts, after finding out that loan sharks were waiting there to grab the money. A Maha Sarakham police team tightened security at the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and other bank branches in this central northeastern region.

Police Col. Kraithong Chaisingh, head of Maha Sarakham city police station, said he sent a team of policemen to maintain law and order at this BAAC branch, which was crowded with farmers, and other bank branches and locations where vulnerable groups of people and the disabled are streaming in to check whether the 10,000 baht giveaway had been deposited before queuing up to withdraw money either via ATM if they have a card or wait to do so from a teller. Thailand sees 1.9 million new electric vehicle registrations, a 13% decline

As many as 1,876,356 electric vehicles (EVs) were registered in Thailand in the first eight months of 2024, a nearly 13% drop compared to the same period last year. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) said on Friday that registrations had declined by 280,091 vehicles from the 2,156,447 in the same period last year.

The department said that despite the lower number of registered EVs in 2024, the trend of new EV registrations was still growing, especially after January. Continued …

Overflowing Ping River continues to affect downtown Chiang Mai

The flooding triggered by the overflowing of the Ping River in Chiang Mai’s Mueang district is even worse than in 2011, according to a report. The surge in the river flooded residences and commercial zones in the district on Wednesday night, including San Pa Khoi Market and the Charoen Prathet and Night Bazaar neighborhoods.

At least 2,000 households were expected to be affected by the flooding, especially those in and around the Night Bazaar where water levels exceeded one meter. Eleven provinces in the Chao Phraya Basin, including metropolitan Bangkok, have been warned to prepare for possible flooding as the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat province will increase its rate of water discharge.

Korat faces water shortage with all its reservoirs only half full

While several provinces in the north are suffering serious flooding, especially Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima in the northeast is facing a water shortage with all of its 27 reservoirs now less than half full.

For an example, Lamtakong reservoir, which is the main source of water for Mueang, Sung Noen, Si Khio, Kham Thalae So and Chalerm Phra Kiat, now contains 92.26 million cubic meters of water, 30.6% of its capacity. Of that, only 25.2% of the water is usable. Continued … 

Roadside bomb injures eight soldiers in Narathiwat

Eight soldiers sustained injuries in a roadside explosion in Rangae district, Narathiwat, believed to be orchestrated by insurgents. The incident took place when an improvised bomb, tied to a power pole along a local road in Ban Hulu Pare, tambon Tanyongmat, was detonated as a military pickup truck carrying the soldiers drove past.

Mortgage growth forecast to plunge

Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) expects 1.2% growth in mortgages within the commercial banking sector this year, the lowest level of expansion in 23 years. The low rate is attributed to the diminished purchasing power of home buyers.

In the second quarter of 2024, commercial banks booked marginal year-on-year growth of 0.8% in mortgage loans, down from 1% the previous quarter, said Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of banking and financial sector research at K-Research. Continued …

Production index projected to decline 1% in 2024

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) is likely to contract by 1% this year, given the declines recorded during the first eight months of the year, caused by a raft of economic problems and the impact of severe floods, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

The best-case scenario for MPI growth is a flat reading, said OIE Director-general Warawan Chitaroon. The office previously downgraded its MPI growth projection for 2024 from a range of 2%-3% to 0-1%. It revised down the range again on Thursday to between -1% and 0. Continued …

Chiang Mai City: Floods Expected to Surpass 2011 Levels

The flooding in Chiang Mai continues to worsen as the Ping River reaches record-breaking levels. As of 9pm last night, the water level in the city of Chiang Mai had risen to 4.83 meters, surpassing the 2022 flood level. Authorities expect the level to climb above 5.10 meters, exceeding the 2011 flood levels.

Reports from Chiang Mai indicate that the situation remains critical, as new floodwaters from Mae Taeng District have reached the city. The flooding has expanded, inundating major economic areas such as the Night Bazaar, San Pa Khoi Market, and parts of the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, with water depths ranging from 50 to 100 cm. Playful rain, cheerful mist at Ban E-Tong

As soon as we arrived at Ban E-Tong, a small village in Kanchanaburi province, in the late afternoon, everyone found themselves in a kingdom engulfed by mist. The familiar scenes were almost entirely swallowed up. We willingly stepped out of the car, humbly embracing the clarity of the season.

The Commerce Ministry is inspecting pork prices nationwide in a bid to reduce expenses for Thai consumers and boost the competitiveness of producers.

Pit Bull Attacks & Kills 67-Year-Old Woman Cycling in Pathum Thani

A 67-year-old woman in Pathum Thani was fatally attacked by a Pit Bull while cycling near her home in Chiang Rak Noi, Sam Khok District. The woman was found with severe bite wounds over most of her body. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The first 3 million needy and disabled people — out of a total of 14.5 million — will receive their 10,000-baht handout under the government’s digital wallet program today, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

10,000-Baht Grant for Over 30 Million People Unlikely This Year

It is unlikely that over 30 million Thai citizens will receive a 10,000-baht grant under the second phase of the Pheu Thai-led populist handout scheme this year, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated yesterday.

The manufacturing and sales of vehicles in Thailand fell by more than 20% in August compared to the same period last year, stats from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) show.

Thailand will postpone a hike in the minimum wage to 400 baht per day scheduled for Oct. 1 by about two weeks due to a lack of a quorum at meetings of the committee working on the increase, a senior labour official said on Monday.

Mechanic Crushed to Death by Truck in Cha Am

An incident claimed the life of a 28-year-old truck mechanic yesterday while he was repairing the undercarriage of a 10-wheeler truck. The incident occurred at a truck repair shop along the Cha Am-Pranburi bypass, heading toward Bangkok.

According to police reports, the mechanic had finished replacing parts under the truck and was preparing to reattach the rear wheels. About 20 armed men took four officials hostage, stole firearms and bombed and torched four buildings at the office of the Hala Bala Wildlife Sanctuary in Waeng district in Narathiwat Saturday night.

Attapon Charoenchansa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said four sanctuary officials were captured in their living quarters while the black-clad and heavily armed attackers, with faces covered, bombed and torched the sanctuary office complex. A Life Changing Move to Rural Thailand

Charissa Enget needed to find an engineering course she could afford. She found one in rural Thailand, where she got a scholarship and living costs were low. It took her six months to learn the language so she could communicate with fellow students, make friends, and travel round the country at weekends.

“I think living abroad is a lot different from traveling abroad, just because you really get to know the people and experience the culture, and it changes your way of thinking a lot more. Thailand changed the way I interact with people in a lot of ways, and I feel bonded to Thailand for the rest of my life. It really changed the way I want to live my life, and I’ll never stop loving Thailand or traveling back there as much as I can.”

Tropical storm Soulik to hit Thailand with heavy rain for 5 days

Tropical storm Soulik over central Vietnam is forecast to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rain to several parts of Thailand for the next five days, the Thai Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

Condo group calls for looser real estate lending rules

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has proposed to the government that it make an exemption from paying corporate income tax, extends the period for the submission of tax returns and exempts import tariffs on machinery for businesses hardest hit by the flooding.

Flood victims to receive maximum 230,000 baht per household

The government will provide a maximum of 230,000 baht in financial aid to every household affected by floods in several provinces, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Monday. This money is on top of the 40,000 to 50,000 baht compensation being paid for other cases, such as deaths, PM’s Secretary-general Prommin Lertsuridej, added.

Paetongtarn said that she would propose to the Cabinet that 3 billion baht be disbursed from the central budget for flood relief during a meeting today. Continued …

Nong Khai governor says flooding to end in two weeks

The governor of Nong Khai province said flooding in the province may end in two weeks because the level in the Mekong is now receding, and the provincial administration will organize a major cleanup once the situation eases.

Singto, veteran member of K9 Search & Rescue team passes away

“Singto,” a member of Thailand’s K9 Urban Search and Rescue team, has died of cancer after 11 years of dedicated service to the organization, said Alongkot Chukaew, deputy director of K9 USAR Thailand. Alongkot noted that Singto was a very strong dog, always ready to face any challenge, and worked with him through difficult times, such as diving in reservoirs to search for missing persons. Damage to the economy from flooding could reach 27 billion baht

The flooding in northern Thailand has been the most severe in the past 80 years and impacted the economy by as much as 27 billion baht, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on Monday.

Minimum wage rising to 400 baht despite employers skipping meeting

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said the minimum daily wage is rising to 400 baht nationwide from Oct. 1 despite employers’ representatives not showing up for the tripartite wage committee meeting yesterday. He warned employers that if they still remain silent and not show up for the next meeting scheduled for Friday he would still proceed with the wage hike.

Phiphat mentioned that he had received letters from chambers of commerce in almost every province, including provincial industrial councils and the Federation of Thai Industries, stating that they were not ready to increase wages at this time. Continued …

Baht expected to continue to rise

The baht could appreciate further, after hitting a 19-month high of 32.2 baht to the dollar on Monday, if the U.S. Federal Reserve cuts interest rates deeper than 25 basis points at its meeting this week, as falling U.S. inflation could prompt the central bank to deliver an outsized rate cut.

The Thai currency rose from Friday’s close of 33.33 baht against the greenback as investors rushed to sell the dollar ahead of the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday, according to Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research). Continued …

Less than 40 million expected to join digital wallet scheme

As Thailand’s tourism continues to grow, the Thai Hotel Assn. (THA) has suggested that the government launch another round of stimulus measures focusing on labor and financial support.
