Bangkok Urges Work from Home Amid Severe Air Pollution Threat

Bangkok residents are being urged to work from home next week, as the city’s air quality is set to deteriorate drastically. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has made this call to counter rising levels of PM2.5 particles, which are anticipated to worsen due to pollution and adverse weather conditions.

Measures to discourage sugarcane farmers from burning crop leftovers – a major contributor to PM2.5 air pollution – have been approved, the Cane and Sugar Board said on Friday.

PM2.5 refers to dust particles measuring 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, long-term exposure to which is linked with chronic diseases, including lung and heart problems. Major sources of PM2.5 include traffic emissions, factories, forest fires, and burning of harvest leftovers. Continued …

Flights fight PM2.5 pollution

Thailand is taking its fight against air pollution to the skies, deploying special flight operations to tackle the dangerous PM2.5 dust particles. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced that the innovative operations have already improved air quality in key regions, including Bangkok, the central region, and the upper north.

Launched by Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI), the mission began on Dec. 1 last year in Bangkok and surrounding areas, expanding to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Tak, and Mae Hong Son provinces the following day. Global minimum tax is coming for multinational companies

The global minimum tax (GMT) represents a significant reform in international taxation under the framework of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Its objective is to align tax systems with global standards by requiring large multinational corporations (MNCs) to pay a minimum tax of 15% (effective tax rate or ETR) in every country where they operate, even in jurisdictions with low tax rates, no tax liability, or special tax incentives. A new top-up tax is expected to impact 1,200 multinational corporations, but it would generate revenue of 12 billion baht in June 2027 for the public sector, a senior official said.

Revenue Department Deputy Director-general Panuwat Luengwilai said yesterday that the top-up tax came into effect on Jan. 1 this year. New study reveals 10 most polluted tourist cities, Bangkok fourth

A new study reveals the tourist cities with the highest pollution levels anywhere worldwide. Based on the study conducted by DIPNDIVE, Egypt’s Cairo came out on top, despite attracting 14.9 million visitors annually.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles, the world’s third most visited city with more than 49 million tourists annually, is the second most polluted destination, while top Asian destination Hong Kong ranked third. Grenade Explodes at Tak Festival, Leaves 3 Dead, 39 Injured

During the annual “Amazing Umphang” fair in Tak province, a grenade exploded near the main stage, turning a night of celebration into chaos. The incident occurred around 23:30 last night, as locals and visitors gathered to enjoy a traditional dance performance at the event’s dance stage.

Cabinet nods for power bill subsidy for vulnerable groups

The Cabinet has approved a total budget of Bt1.9 billion to subsidize power bills for vulnerable groups during September–December 2024. For power bills in September, the Cabinet approved that the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial Electricity Authority allocate a subtotal budget of Bt472.67 million for the subsidy.

The retroactive measure means that vulnerable individuals with power bills recorded at no higher than 300 units during the four-month period are eligible for the subsidy, equivalent to a 19.05 satang discount per unit. The special measure benefits 2.31 million people in metropolitan areas and another 16.55 million in provincial areas. – Thai PBS

Millionaire woman among 12 beggars arrested in Bangkok

Twelve beggars were arrested in the inner Sukhumvit area of Bangkok on Thursday night, including a Thai woman who had earned over a million baht. The Immigration Division 1 revealed on Friday that locals had complained about a lot of beggars in the area, which was hurting Thailand’s image.

Bt300 billion allocated for six dual-track railway projects

The Transport Ministry aims to invest almost 300 billion baht to expand a raft of dual railway tracks next year. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced the plan to accelerate the implementation of the second phase, which will cover six dual-track railway projects.

These routes span a total of 1,312 kilometers, with a combined budget of 298.06 billion baht. Thailand second among high-risk nations under Trump’s 2.0 plans

Thailand’s digital economy expands 5.7% in 2024

Collision on Chao Phraya River Near Bangkok Bridge, One Boat Sinks

A boat collision occurred on the Chao Phraya River near the Bangkok Bridge yesterday, resulting in one vessel sinking and damage to five others. Police officers from Bang Kho Laem Police Station, along with the Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department and the Marine Department, were dispatched to the scene to investigate.

The incident took place near the Bangkok Bridge, where six boats were involved. One boat, a 40-seat vessel, completely sank, while another sustained significant damage to its side and rear. PM says handout will give ‘jolt’ to economy

The launch of a 145-billion-baht handout program to needy people next week is certain to give a “jolt” to the economy, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Tuesday, as her government promised more stimulus measures ahead.

Final minimum wage decision due Friday

The national wage committee is scheduled to convene again on Friday, with the aim of introducing a 400-baht minimum wage among large employers nationwide on Oct. 1, as planned, according to Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Industrial sentiment fell in August due to weak domestic demand, high production costs and floods, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said today.

The FTI said its industrial sentiment index dropped to 87.7 in August from 89.3 in July, when it had risen for the first time in four months. The world is headed toward uncharted waters

The Thai Cabinet has tasked the Interior Ministry with amending the Condominium Act to increase the foreign ownership limit in condominium projects from 49% to 75%. Additionally, they have been directed to modify the Land Act to allow foreigners to lease land for 99 years, up from the current 50 years.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated on Friday that the Land Act requires minimal changes. The existing law already permits a 50-year lease with an option to extend for another 50 years. Thailand has approved the collection of 7% value-added tax (VAT) on imported goods sold for less than 1,500 baht (US$40.93) from July to December, a finance ministry official said on Friday.

Hua Hin takes ‘long term’ measures to improve water supply

Hua Hin is making strides to address the region’s water supply challenges amid a severe drought by enhancing its infrastructure. On Tuesday, Siraphan Kamonpramot, adviser to the mayor of Hua Hin, led the 12th Coordination, Monitoring, and Inspection Committee meeting to discuss the water supply crisis.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Atichat Chaisri detailed plans to install a new raw water pipeline to bolster the production of tap water. Exports down but manufacturers told not to worry

Thailand’s export value in March dropped to $24.96 billion, a decline of 10.9% year on year and the lowest in eight months. The contraction was also the largest in the region, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday.

Heavy rains forecast for mid-May

Following the pandemic-induced economic crisis of 2020-21, the new Thai government has been focused on boosting the rate of economic growth. Thailand’s economic growth has fallen more than Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia or Vietnam due to its high dependence on exports and the tourism sector.

Smog levels continue to rise

Smog levels continued to rise this morning, with PM2.5 dust readings exceeding 200 micrograms per cubic meter of air in three northern provinces, including Chiang Mai.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that 20 provinces recorded red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). They ranged from 76.1 to 227.2 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. The government-set safe threshold is 37.5µg/m³. Continued …

Health Ministry warns against eating geckos for sexual benefits

Health authorities have raised alarms over a dangerous trend among middle-aged men in Thailand, involving the consumption of live geckos as a supposed sexual enhancement remedy. A 59-year-old man named Sommai recently captured public attention by eating a gecko live on social media, claiming regular consumption would bolster health, offer an alternative to erectile dysfunction and improve one’s sexual performance within three hours.

Atthapol Kaewsamrit, deputy director-general of the Department of Health, Ministry of Public Health, revealed that this online-shared information is not only baseless but also poses a significant health risk. Diesel at Shell stations rises to 30.49 baht per liter

Shell Thailand raised its retail price for diesel to 30.49 baht per liter as soon as the government announced it was lifting the 30-baht price ceiling on Tuesday. The government decided to lift the price ceiling on diesel after the Oil Fuel Fund recorded a deficit of 100 billion baht from the subsidy.

The 30-baht price cap was implemented last September in a bid to ease people’s financial burden and was extended every three months until it expired on March 31. Continued …

Big Joke woes: Arrested for money laundering, released on bail

Deputy National Police Chief Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, reported to the enquiry officer at Taopoon police station on Tuesday afternoon, to acknowledge the money-laundering charges filed against him. He was granted bail after about four hours of questioning.

Surachate told reporters as he left the police station at about 8pm that he has denied all the charges and vows to fight the case in the court. He insisted that he is still regarded as innocent until he is found guilty by the court. Continued …

Lop Buri plans macaque control center to tackle monkey menace

Marijuana in Thailand will be regulated, not banned: public health minister

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said the government will soon pass a bill that ensures marijuana is used for medical and health purposes only. Cholnan made this comment on Tuesday to apparently correct Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who recently told an online news site that his government will be putting marijuana back on the list of narcotics.

The domestic gold price surged to a new record high this morning, with 96.5% gold ornaments being sold at 40,200 baht a baht weight, up 450 baht from the previous day.

Cabinet endorses 400-baht daily wage to hotel workers in 10 provinces

The Cabinet on Tuesday endorsed the tripartite wage committee’s decision to set a daily minimum wage of 400 baht for hotel workers in 10 tourist-destination provinces, the labor minister said. The new rate would take effect in time for Songkran Day on April 13.

It was the first time this year that the wage panel, which comprises representatives from the government, employers and employees, used a wage calculation method based on types of businesses and areas where businesses are located, instead of setting universal daily wages based on provinces.
