Thailand’s Central Bank Cuts Interest Rate to Boost Economic Growth

Thailand’s central bank has surprised markets with an unexpected decision to cut its key interest rate by 25 basis points, reducing it from 2.5% to 2.25%. The move comes after five consecutive meetings where the rate was held steady, and amid persistent calls from the government for monetary easing to support a sluggish economy.

Cutting policy rate the right move: Thai private sector

The Thai private sector says the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s cutting of the policy rate by 25 basis points, from 2.50% to 2.25% per annum, is well suited to the country’s current economic situation and will help several sectors, notably exports and tourism.

In a bid to help reduce the public’s debt burden, the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 5:2 on Wednesday to lower the key policy rate with immediate effect after over a year of holding the rate at 2.50%. Continued … 

PM formally launches economic recovery program

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was joined by several of her ministers at yesterday’s launch of her administration’s economic recovery program. The event, held at Government House, was also attended by representatives from the public and private sectors, including CP Group, The Mall Group, BJC Big C, PT, OR, SeaValue, Thai Union, and OSOTSPA.

Emphasizing that the government is prioritizing economic stimulation and citing last month’s launch of the 10,000-baht economic stimulus, she said that the program is crucial for maintaining the momentum in stimulating the Thai economy to ensure maximum efficiency and value. This round focuses on small businesses, which make up 90% of all businesses and form the backbone of the Thai economy, with the program designed to reduce costs, increase income, and expand opportunities over five months. Thai growth upgraded as cash handout improves outlook

Analysts have upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and next to 2.8% and 3%, respectively, thanks to the government’s cash handout lifting the economy, but warned of an “economic cliff” in 2026 if no new growth engine is introduced.

Kiatnakin Phatra Research (KKP) and BofA Global Research both increased their Thai GDP outlooks for 2024 from 2.6% to 2.8%, with the forecasts for next year rising from 2.8% to 3.0%. They noted the government’s 10,000-baht cash handouts will temporarily help the Thai economy. Continued …

Industrial sentiment dips in September

The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) continued to decline to 87.1 points in September, in part because of the impact of severe flooding and slow economic growth. The index, which gauges business confidence among manufacturers, stood at 87.7 points in August, down from 89.3 points in July.

Nava Chantanasurakon, vice chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), attributed the dip in September to floods in the north, northeast and parts of the central region. Continued …

Circuit board makers invest Bt162 billion in Thailand, seek BOI incentives

The Board of Investment said that many foreign printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers have been seeking special privileges for their investments worth 162 billion baht over the past year. BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said on Wednesday that most of these circuit board manufacturers were from China or Taiwan, and they have applied for BOI privileges in 95 projects.

These include expansion projects of foreign manufacturers already established in Thailand, such as Mektec and KCE, he said. There were also newcomers showing interest, such as Unimicron, Compeq, WUS, Gold Circuit, Chin Poon, Dynamic Electronics, Apex Circuit and Unitech, he said. Continued …

Thailand plans $1.7 billion of soft loans for property sector

The government is planning to offer 55 billion baht ($1.66 billion) of soft loans to support the property sector and help boost the economy, a deputy finance minister said today. The plan will be submitted to the cabinet for approval, Paopoom Rojanasakul said in a message to reporters.

FedEx Expands Electric Vehicle Fleet in Thailand

Federal Express Corp., one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has advanced toward its vehicle electrification goals by introducing four new zero-tailpipe emissions electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet in Thailand. The expansion builds on the success of its initial launch of EVs in 2022 as part of the company’s efforts to transition to an all-electric parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet by 2040.

The new EVs will support parcel PUD operations within high-traffic areas in Bangkok and Pathum Thani such as Chaeng Watthana, Tiwanon, Lat Phrao, Ram Inthra, Ngam Wong Wan, Prasert Manukit, Sukhonthasawat, Thammasart, and Chiengrak. Talks with Laos focus on renewable effort

PM says handout will give ‘jolt’ to economy

The launch of a 145-billion-baht handout program to needy people next week is certain to give a “jolt” to the economy, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Tuesday, as her government promised more stimulus measures ahead.

Final minimum wage decision due Friday

The national wage committee is scheduled to convene again on Friday, with the aim of introducing a 400-baht minimum wage among large employers nationwide on Oct. 1, as planned, according to Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Industrial sentiment fell in August due to weak domestic demand, high production costs and floods, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said today.

The FTI said its industrial sentiment index dropped to 87.7 in August from 89.3 in July, when it had risen for the first time in four months. The world is headed toward uncharted waters

Thai mango exports more than double in first three months

Thailand’s exports of fresh mango in the first quarter this year increased 130%, to about 1.6 billion baht, compared to the same period last year, while exports of sticky rice increased 13%, to about one billion baht during the same period.

Chotima Iemsawasdikul, director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department, said the TasteAtlast website’s recent ranking of Thai mango sticky as the world’s second best rice pudding has further increased the popularity of the dessert in numerous countries, offering a good opportunity for Thai exporters to increase exports and make use of the FTAs Thailand has with ASEAN, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Chile, Peru and Hong Kong. Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. 206 Deaths in 5 Days of ‘Songkran 7 Days Road Safety Campaign’

A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

The provinces with the total highest fatalities were Bangkok and Chiang Rai with 13 deaths each. The total highest number of accidents was Chiang Rai with 61 and the highest number of injuries was Nan with 60 injuries. Continued …

Most Thais waiting for 10,000-baht digital handout, opinion poll finds

Nearly 70% of Thais said they are ready to receive the 10,000-baht digital wallet handout that is being launched as an economic stimulus measure, a recent poll shows.

Under the scheme, all Thais aged 16 and above with a monthly income of less than 70,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht will receive 10,000 baht via a digital wallet to spend at local shops. The so-called super app earmarked for the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme will work in sync with existing mobile applications for banks on users’ phones, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. This revised plan involves the use of 30 trucks to relocate 450 tons of cadmium tailings per day, starting May 7. Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. Hua Hin’s mayor has confirmed that the water supply to large parts of Hua Hin will be suspended from yesterday ahead of the Songkran festival, which will still go ahead and which is due to get underway from today.

Hua Hin’s water management authorities have said there will be a temporary suspension of the water supply from the Khao Laeng water production plant. Two directives from the Interior Ministry were published in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday in a bid to boost the sale of property in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on the previous day. The directives go into immediate effect.

One of the directives states that in line with the government’s policy to support and reduce the burden on those who want to have their own homes and to boost the sale of property, the transfer fees and mortgage fees for houses, duplexes, townhouses, commercial buildings and land with buildings worth no more than 7 million baht will be set at 0.01% until Dec. 31. A long-tail boat carrying seven Chinese tourists plus the vessel’s crew members capsized off Krabi yesterday, but fortunately all were safely rescued by a passing boat. Koh Samui Sees Increase in Visitors Following Visa Exemptions

Wiwat Chuenban, the chairman of the Surat Thani Provincial Tourism Industry Council, revealed an increasing number of foreign and Thai tourists visiting Koh Samui in January and February.

After a visa exemption for Chinese tourists, there were four direct flights from Chengdu, China, to Surat Thani in one week. Chinese tourists have descended on Phuket to celebrate Chinese New Year, pushing hotel occupancy on the island to 81%. Phuket has long been a popular destination for Chinese travelers due its strong Chinese heritage and ancestry.

The director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the number of Chinese arrivals has jumped to between 4,000 and 5,000 a day. A 35-year-old Chinese man on vacation with his family in Pattaya for the Chinese New Year reportedly fell to his death from a condo in north Pattaya yesterday afternoon. Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to increase after third runway is operational in July

The construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in time for its use in July, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said Sunday. Once the new runway is in use, the airport capacity will be increased from 67 flights per hour to 94 flights per hour, Suriya added.

Concert and music performance are the most popular Children’s Day activities, while top music artists are the individuals Thai youths are most interested to meet in person, according to a poll jointly conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Suan Dusit Poll. In Thailand, Children’s Day is observed on the second Saturday of January, which falls on Jan. 13 this year.

The pump rice of diesel will be increased by 5 baht/liter from July 21 if the caretaker government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha or the new government, which is yet to be formed, does not extend the excise tax cut introduced on Feb. 18 last year.

Excise Department Director-General Ekniti Nitithanprapas said on Sunday that the caretaker government could seek approval from the Election Commission to extend the tax cut, adding, however, that the issue has not yet been discussed with caretaker Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith. Residents in the Wat Pa Lan Kam community have sought the help of monks to perform an exorcism ceremony in an attempt to ward off evil spirits associated with the so-called “spirit of the deceased.”

Russian Tourist Drowns On Patong Beach

A Russian tourist drowned at Patong Beach on Saturday in the early morning. The victim was pulled up to the beach and was later identified as Rafaylovich Pavel, 53, a Russian national. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hua Hin now has twice-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and 3pm, and departing from Pattaya at 8am and 4pm. Tickets are 473 THB.

Tickets can be bought in person at the Hua Hin bus station or online. Buses depart from the Hua Hin bus station and in front of Government Savings Bank, Cha Am.. Tickets

Sansiri plans 22 Thai projects this year, including ‘Cabanas Huahin’

Thailand to get 2 new types of lottery: fully digital and semi-digital

The Government Lottery Office’s board approved the plan to issue two new types of lottery – the six-digit (L6) and three-digit (N3) lotteries.

The move was proposed by the Finance Ministry.

The L6 lottery will go for 80 baht each, the same as the lotteries currently available, but will only be sold in digital format. Some of these lotteries will be sold via the Pao Tang application, said Lavaron Sangsnit, chairman of the Lottery Board. Continued …

Websites of all 20 Thai ministries hacked by online gambling platforms

The websites of state agencies under all 20 Thai ministries have been attacked by hackers working for online gambling platforms, Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said on Friday.

He said the hackers managed to plant malicious script on web pages of the government agencies that linked to online gambling websites.

More than 30 million URLs of compromised state-agency websites were found to have been corrupted. Continued …

New amendments make it easier to set up companies in Thailand

The government has adjusted requirements for the registration of limited partnerships and mergers in a bid to ease the setting up of startups.

Deputy government spokesperson Trisulee Trisaranakul said on Friday that amendments to the Civil and Commercial Code now allow a limited partnership to be registered in the name of two people instead of three.

The amendment was announced on Nov. 8, 2022, and went into effect 90 days later, on Feb. 7. Continued …

Thailand woos foreign film production to promote growth, cultural soft power

Thailand is promoting its film industry as a shooting location for foreign films in an effort to boost the economy and improve the kingdom’s image through cultural soft power, a government spokesman said.

Thailand’s popularity as a filming destination has grown over the years due to its diverse locations and skilled production crews, which will help the Southeast Asian country become known for its beauty, said Anucha Burapachaisri, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister and government spokesman.

Encouragement of foreign film productions was another cost-effective measure, as it would generate income for businesses and locals near film locations throughout the country, Anucha said. Continued …

Monkey thieves corraled in Nakhon Sawan

The two suspects caught trying to capture long-tailed macaques were met with fury from Nakhon Sawan locals as they were brought back by police to enact their crime on Friday.

Thaweeluck, 37, and Phromphiram, 23, (last names withheld) were arrested on Thursday as they were trying to hit the creatures with tranquilizer darts.

‘Without private sector in tow, Thai government cannot achieve sustainability goals’

Thailand’s government should speed up the country’s sustainable development and ensure that private companies are achieving their own sustainable goals, experts from Baker & McKenzie said during a seminar at The Athenee Hotel in Bangkok on Friday.

During the seminar on “Sustainability and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)”, the company’s partner, Yuthana Sivaraks, said ESG has been trending since the launch of the Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty that commits states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, on Dec. 11, 1997.

He added that the move to deal with greenhouse gas emissions had changed from voluntary to mandatory after the Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change, was adopted in 2015. Continued …

Police officer dies, four injured in insurgent attack in Yala Province

One police major was killed and four other officers were injured when the blast from a bomb, hidden under a road in Bannang Sata district of Thailand’s southern province of Yala, impacted the pickup truck in which they were traveling Friday.

The five-man team was on its way to investigate the torching of road rollers by suspected insurgents last night. When the truck arrived near the scene of one of the damaged rollers, insurgents, who may have been hiding nearby, detonated the device.

The powerful explosion tore a large hole in the road and blew the police car onto its roof. The police major died at the scene. – Thai PBS

Surat Thani Tourism Hits Highest Growth in Thailand

Surat Thani tourism, which includes Samui, Phangan, and Tao (Turtle) islands, has reached the highest growth in the country, with tourism revenue increasing 900% from a 600% increase of tourists year over year.

Surat Thani Gov. Witchawut Jintoe said that according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, last year Surat Thani’s revenue from tourism was 27.66 billion baht. Continued …

Almost 2,000 Chinese flights to enter Thailand

Thailand’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAAT) authorized 1,910 flights from China to enter the kingdom, with 671 expected to arrive in February and 970 slated for arrival in March, according to CAAT President Suttipong Kongpool.

In addition, the CAAT has received 6,318 flight requests for the period from Feb. 13 to 19, bringing the total number of flights for February 2023 to 25,256. A total of 269 Chinese flights already arrived in the country last month.

The increase in flights follows the relaxation of travel restrictions by the Thai government after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the lifting of harsh border restrictions by China on Jan. 8. Continued …

AoT launches new plan to handle rise of passengers

Suvarnabhumi International Airport has announced new measures to handle the rise of incoming passengers, as the number of arrivals at Bangkok’s main international gateway jumped following China’s decision to reopen its borders.

The Airport of Thailand (AoT) revealed on Friday that Suvarnabhumi airport has come up with many measures to tackle the delays in passenger servicing time, which have already begun improving service flow, especially during peak hours, it claimed.

According to Suvarnabhumi Airport Director Kittipong Kittikachorn, the airport received complaints about luggage claim delays from approximately 30 flights per day last month. Continued …

Thai street cuisine is prepared in open spaces and served to customers searching for quick and delightful meals. It is typically sold from carts, stands, and the sides of the road.

Thai Airways cancels flights to Germany due to strikes

Thai Airways announced the cancellation of all flights from Bangkok to Frankfurt and Munich and vice versa yesterday due to labor strikes at airports all over Germany.

Airport workers at major hubs in Germany were taking part in a day-long strike over pay, disrupting airline operations.

Public sector workers and ground handlers were striking at seven airports: Frankfurt Main, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hannover and Bremen. Continued …

Operators seek tourism law reform following Japan scam

Tour operators are calling for tourism laws to be reformed to protect travel agents, not only customers, following an alleged Japan tour scam worth 14 million baht.

Ten retail travel agents filed a complaint against one wholesale company with the Royal Thai Police’s Central Investigation Bureau this week, alleging they were scammed when they bought outbound package tours to Japan for a price of 21,899 baht. The wholesale company said it could not arrange the tours as promised.

According to the Tourism Department, this company has allegedly been offering scam tours to Japan since before the pandemic, with reportedly more than 400 victims. Continued …

European tourists learn to do Thai-traditional rice farming in Mae Hong Son

A group of European tourists from France, Sweden, England, and Germany was guided to do Thai traditional rice farming at Fern Rim Than Resort, Ban Hua Nam Mae Sakut subdistrict, in Mae Hong Son Province.
