The bank accounts of innocent people frozen during police investigations into scammers’ mule accounts will be unlocked within half a day, national police chief Kittharath Punpetch said yesterday.

A 39-year-old vegetable vendor in Mueang district, Prachuap Khiri Khan, has shared her near-death ordeal after a traditional treatment for shingles spiraled into a life-threatening infection.

The woman said the ordeal began earlier this month whe shingles appeared on her neck and behind her ears. Initially, she self-medicated with over-the-counter drugs, but when her symptoms persisted, she turned to a traditional healer on a friend’s advice. Female employees in Thailand will be entitled to maternity leave of up to 120 days under the Labor Protection Amendments bill, which passed the Senate yesterday.

Under the new bill, a mother is entitled to 120 days of maternity leave, with full pay for 60 days, compared with 98 days and 45 days of full pay under the current law. Thai PM suspended

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from her duties pending a ruling on whether she breached ethical standards in violation of the constitution, following a controversial phone call with Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen.

Revision of alcohol sales ban from 2-5 pm under review

The Ministry of Public Health expects scrutiny of a new bill containing a series of amendments to the Alcohol Control Act 2008 to be completed later this month, says Minister Somsak Thepsutin. The legislation will get rid of outdated military-era sales restrictions and ease curbs on advertising, but will also introduce some stricter regulations.

        For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Trump’s tariffs to remain in effect after appeals court grants stay

A federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the most sweeping of President Donald Trump’s tariffs yesterday, a day after a U.S. trade court ruled that Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing the duties and ordered an immediate block on them.

Thailand’s Central Bank Cuts Interest Rate to Boost Economic Growth

Thailand’s central bank has surprised markets with an unexpected decision to cut its key interest rate by 25 basis points, reducing it from 2.5% to 2.25%. Cutting policy rate the right move: Thai private sector

The Thai private sector says the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s cutting of the policy rate by 25 basis points, from 2.50% to 2.25% per annum, is well suited to the country’s current economic situation and will help several sectors, notably exports and tourism.

In a bid to help reduce the public’s debt burden, the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 5:2 on Wednesday to lower the key policy rate with immediate effect after over a year of holding the rate at 2.50%. Continued …

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was joined by several of her ministers at yesterday’s launch of her administration’s economic recovery program. The event, held at Government House, was also attended by representatives from the public and private sectors, including CP Group, The Mall Group, BJC Big C, PT, OR, SeaValue, Thai Union, and OSOTSPA.

Emphasizing that the government is prioritizing economic stimulation and citing last month’s launch of the 10,000-baht economic stimulus, she said that the program is crucial for maintaining the momentum in stimulating the Thai economy to ensure maximum efficiency and value. This round focuses on small businesses, which make up 90% of all businesses and form the backbone of the Thai economy, with the program designed to reduce costs, increase income, and expand opportunities over five months. Thai growth upgraded as cash handout improves outlook

Analysts have upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and next to 2.8% and 3%, respectively, thanks to the government’s cash handout lifting the economy, but warned of an “economic cliff” in 2026 if no new growth engine is introduced.

Kiatnakin Phatra Research (KKP) and BofA Global Research both increased their Thai GDP outlooks for 2024 from 2.6% to 2.8%, with the forecasts for next year rising from 2.8% to 3.0%. They noted the government’s 10,000-baht cash handouts will temporarily help the Thai economy. Continued …

Industrial sentiment dips in September

The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) continued to decline to 87.1 points in September, in part because of the impact of severe flooding and slow economic growth. The index, which gauges business confidence among manufacturers, stood at 87.7 points in August, down from 89.3 points in July.

Circuit board makers invest Bt162 billion in Thailand, seek BOI incentives

The Board of Investment said that many foreign printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers have been seeking special privileges for their investments worth 162 billion baht over the past year. BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said on Wednesday that most of these circuit board manufacturers were from China or Taiwan, and they have applied for BOI privileges in 95 projects.

These include expansion projects of foreign manufacturers already established in Thailand, such as Mektec and KCE, he said. There were also newcomers showing interest, such as Unimicron, Compeq, WUS, Gold Circuit, Chin Poon, Dynamic Electronics, Apex Circuit and Unitech, he said. Continued …

Thailand plans $1.7 billion of soft loans for property sector

The government is planning to offer 55 billion baht ($1.66 billion) of soft loans to support the property sector and help boost the economy, a deputy finance minister said today. The plan will be submitted to the cabinet for approval, Paopoom Rojanasakul said in a message to reporters.

FedEx Expands Electric Vehicle Fleet in Thailand

Federal Express Corp., one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has advanced toward its vehicle electrification goals by introducing four new zero-tailpipe emissions electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet in Thailand. The expansion builds on the success of its initial launch of EVs in 2022 as part of the company’s efforts to transition to an all-electric parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet by 2040.

The new EVs will support parcel PUD operations within high-traffic areas in Bangkok and Pathum Thani such as Chaeng Watthana, Tiwanon, Lat Phrao, Ram Inthra, Ngam Wong Wan, Prasert Manukit, Sukhonthasawat, Thammasart, and Chiengrak. PM says handout will give ‘jolt’ to economy

Department of Business Development bolstering support for online commerce

The Thai Department of Business Development is working to support the adoption of e-commerce by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

According to various sources, e-commerce will reach 750 billion baht by 2025. ‘We Travel Together’ co-payment scheme may return

To further boost the tourism industry, the Tourism and Sports Ministry is planning to bring back the popular “Rao Tiew Duay Kan” (We Travel Together) co-payment scheme implemented to revive the industry after the Covid-19 outbreak.

The world is headed toward uncharted waters

Thai mango exports more than double in first three months

Thailand’s exports of fresh mango in the first quarter this year increased 130%, to about 1.6 billion baht, compared to the same period last year, while exports of sticky rice increased 13%, to about one billion baht during the same period.

Chotima Iemsawasdikul, director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department, said the TasteAtlast website’s recent ranking of Thai mango sticky as the world’s second best rice pudding has further increased the popularity of the dessert in numerous countries, offering a good opportunity for Thai exporters to increase exports and make use of the FTAs Thailand has with ASEAN, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, Chile, Peru and Hong Kong. Hua Hin celebrates legacy of boxing champion Pone Kingpetch

The Hua Hin municipality commemorated the legendary Thai boxer Pone Kingpetch on the 64th anniversary of his historic world title win with a series of events yesterday honoring his contributions to the sport and his enduring legacy in the community.

The celebration took place at Pone Kingpetch Public Park, named after the celebrated athlete who was the first Thai to claim a world boxing championship. Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. 206 Deaths in 5 Days of ‘Songkran 7 Days Road Safety Campaign’

A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

The provinces with the total highest fatalities were Bangkok and Chiang Rai with 13 deaths each. The total highest number of accidents was Chiang Rai with 61 and the highest number of injuries was Nan with 60 injuries. Continued …

Most Thais waiting for 10,000-baht digital handout, opinion poll finds

Nearly 70% of Thais said they are ready to receive the 10,000-baht digital wallet handout that is being launched as an economic stimulus measure, a recent poll shows.

Under the scheme, all Thais aged 16 and above with a monthly income of less than 70,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht will receive 10,000 baht via a digital wallet to spend at local shops. Digital wallet ‘super app’ to link with bank apps

The so-called super app earmarked for the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme will work in sync with existing mobile applications for banks on users’ phones, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

The app, he explained, was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and the Digital Government Development Agency (DGA) for use in any digital-based policies. Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Thailand’s foreign tourism boom: 10 million visitors fuel 500 billion windfall

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The data, up to date as of yesterday, shows 10,723,953 foreign visitors have contributed to an income of 518 billion baht (US$14 billion).

Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. This revised plan involves the use of 30 trucks to relocate 450 tons of cadmium tailings per day, starting May 7. Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. I watch for a while, then return inside, where it takes the nocturnal serenade of an Indian nightjar to lull me back to sleep.

Here’s the really wild part. My tent is pitched in Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest national park and one of the world’s newest UNESCO heritage sites. It’s in the southwest, a £12 taxi ride from the golden beaches of the ritzy resort of Hua Hin, itself a £1 train ride from Bangkok. Water disruption daily from 9:30am-3:30pm daily

Hua Hin’s mayor has confirmed that the water supply to large parts of Hua Hin will be suspended from yesterday ahead of the Songkran festival, which will still go ahead and which is due to get underway from today.

Hua Hin’s water management authorities have said there will be a temporary suspension of the water supply from the Khao Laeng water production plant. The suspension, aimed at reallocating water resources to meet the festival’s heightened demand, will affect significant portions of the city from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Continued …

Interior Ministry slashes mortgage, transfer fees to boost property sales

Two directives from the Interior Ministry were published in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday in a bid to boost the sale of property in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on the previous day. The directives go into immediate effect.

One of the directives states that in line with the government’s policy to support and reduce the burden on those who want to have their own homes and to boost the sale of property, the transfer fees and mortgage fees for houses, duplexes, townhouses, commercial buildings and land with buildings worth no more than 7 million baht will be set at 0.01% until Dec. 31. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced yesterday that the government’s 500-billion-baht digital wallet initiative will be launched in full swing in the fourth quarter to stimulate economic growth. Tourism authorities in Thailand are pushing for a long-term reciprocal visa-free scheme with India, projected to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027. Somsong Sachaphimukh, the vice president of the Tourism Council of Thailand, highlighted the positive impact of the current temporary visa exemption for India, which has accelerated the Indian market’s growth.

Satellite images show there are some 600 hotspots in Thailand, mostly on forested land, and more than 4,000 in Cambodia, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Agency (GISTDA) said.

Economic crisis feared amid digital wallet dispute

Thailand welcomed 128,969 foreign visitors on Feb. 8, two days ahead of this year’s Chinese New Year, while total foreign arrivals this year nearly reached 4 million, Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke said on Saturday.

Boat Carrying Chinese Tourists Capsizes, All Safely Rescued

A long-tail boat carrying seven Chinese tourists plus the vessel’s crew members capsized off Krabi yesterday, but fortunately all were safely rescued by a passing boat. The accident occurred near Koh Lao Lading island, around 300 meters from Koh Hong, with the two islands being part of Krabi’s Than Bok Khorani National Park.

Koh Samui Sees Increase in Visitors Following Visa Exemptions

Wiwat Chuenban, the chairman of the Surat Thani Provincial Tourism Industry Council, revealed an increasing number of foreign and Thai tourists visiting Koh Samui in January and February.

After a visa exemption for Chinese tourists, there were four direct flights from Chengdu, China, to Surat Thani in one week. There was also a direct flight route from Taiwan to Surat Thani, as well, resulting in a surging number of bookings of more than 672 hotels, and 25,000 rooms were reserved, according to Wiwat. 5,000 Chinese tourists a day on Phuket over Chinese New Year

Chinese tourists have descended on Phuket to celebrate Chinese New Year, pushing hotel occupancy on the island to 81%. Phuket has long been a popular destination for Chinese travelers due its strong Chinese heritage and ancestry.

The director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the number of Chinese arrivals has jumped to between 4,000 and 5,000 a day. Lertchai Wangtrakuldee says this is the highest number of arrivals of any nationality and the island expects to see revenue of 6.8 billion baht from the holiday period. Continued …

A 35-year-old Chinese man on vacation with his family in Pattaya for the Chinese New Year reportedly fell to his death from a condo in north Pattaya yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at approximately 2pm at a condo in central Pattaya whose name has been withheld pending further investigation.

The victim, identified by his family to the press and police as 35-year-old Yuanhui Lai, had reportedly fallen to his death from the balcony of a rented condo on the 18th floor of the condominium. Continued …

Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to increase after third runway is operational in July

The construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in time for its use in July, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said Sunday. Once the new runway is in use, the airport capacity will be increased from 67 flights per hour to 94 flights per hour, Suriya added.
