Experts urge reform as Thailand’s growth slows to 2.7% in 2025

Thailand’s economy is at a pivotal moment as it contends with sluggish growth and structural issues that are expected to cap GDP growth at 2.7% in 2025. 256 tons of electronic waste seized from Laem Chabang Port

The Customs Department has seized over 256 tons of electronic waste smuggled from Japan and Hong Kong via Laem Chabang Port, department spokesperson Panthong Loykulnanta told a press conference.

Panthong said that the Customs Department has been vigilant in monitoring illegal imports of electronic waste. Austrian packaging manufacturer Alpla posted positive financial results in 2024, increasing its turnover to €4.9 billion, up 4% from €4.7 billion the previous year. The company said its commitment to the circular economy is ‘paying off’ as it announced a goal to double its current plastic recycling capacity to 700,000 tons/year by 2030.

As virgin and recycled plastic production shifts eastward, Alpla announced it will open a new plant in Thailand in 2025, without offering more details. Green jet fuel production starts in Thailand

PTT Global Chemical says it has started producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Thailand for the first time, with planned annual output of 6 million liters for the first phase.

Bangkok’s air quality plummeted to hazardous levels, with PM2.5 dust particles soaring to the orange health-threatening category across all 50 districts, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported today.

The average PM2.5 concentration in the city reached 47.6 µg/m³ this morning, significantly exceeding the safe limit of 37.5 µg/m³. The five worst-affected districts are Nong Khaem (56.7 µg/m³), Khlong Sam Wa (56.4 µg/m³), Thon Buri (55.3 µg/m³), Nong Chok (55.2 µg/m³), and Min Buri (55.2 µg/m³). Continued …

Corporate income tax cut to 10% in SEZs

The Revenue Department has reduced the corporate income tax rate for businesses in special economic zones (SEZs) to 10% for 10 years to promote investment in the zones.

According to Pinsai Suraswadi, director-general of the department, the tax reduction was approved by the cabinet on Jan. 13 and the department issued a royal decree to implement the tax reduction in SEZs. Handout phase 2 starts on Jan 27

The second phase of the government’s 10,000-baht cash handout will begin on Jan 27, two days earlier than planned, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said yesterday. The new phase will involve between 3.5 million to 4 million elderly citizens aged 60 and above receiving the cash via the government’s PromptPay app.

NBTC suspends OPPO and realme sales over data privacy breach

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Office of the Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC) have ordered the suspension of mobile phone sales by OPPO and realme due to the installation of loan applications without user consent. Both companies have until Jan. 16 to explain, failing which they face fines of up to 3 million baht.

Thailand’s poultry exports hit record high

The third quarter of 2024 brought record highs for poultry exports from Thailand, noted the Rabobank Global Poultry Quarterly 2025 report. According to the report, poultry export volumes reached a record 320,000 metric tons during the third quarter, an increase of 11% when compared to the third quarter of the previous year.

The report noted that processed poultry exports performed particularly well during the first three quarters at 505,000 metric tons, a year-over-year improvement of 14%. The improvement is largely attributed to a strong demand from European markets and from Singapore. Continued …

33 Chinese tourists saved from sinking boat off Phuket

Thirty-three Chinese tourists were safely rescued from a sinking catamaran off Phuket yesterday afternoon. The Phuket office of the Marine Department was informed that the catamaran sank about 1.6 nautical miles north of Koh Racha Yai, to the south of Phuket.

54% tariff on wine imports eliminated ‘indefinitely’

Thailand is cutting alcohol taxes and tariffs in a bid to lower the cost of a night out and attract more tourists. A 54% tariff on wine imports will be “exempted indefinitely”, according to local media accounts of a Thai cabinet meeting, while excise duties on locally produced wine will be cut to 10% or below.

The measure is designed not only to expand the budding domestic industry, but also to add to supplies of less-expensive alcohol. The government had in recent years increased tariffs on wine in a bid to raise revenues. Thai economy to shake off risks in 2025 but growth limited

Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. The Thailand Consumers Council is urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take legal action against importers of Shine Muscat grapes after lab tests showed some samples were contaminated with chemicals that are banned in Thailand.

According to TCC, 23 out of 24 Shine Muscat grape samples tested by the council last week were found to be contaminated with hazardous chemical residues beyond the acceptable legal limit. Thailand’s Meteorological Department has announced that the 2024 winter season is set to begin on Oct. 29 and is expected to last until late February 2025. This season is anticipated to be colder than last year, with December 2024 to January 2025 marking the coldest period.

According to Dr. Sukanyaniyawinyacharn, acting director-general of the Meteorological Department, the onset of winter is assessed by three factors: a consistent drop in temperatures below 23°C across northern Thailand, a shift to northeast and east winds at lower altitudes, and a gradual decrease in rainfall. Retirement age to go up to 65

The Labor Ministry plans to raise the retirement age for both private and government sectors to 65 years, the same as in Singapore and Switzerland, said Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn. Bangkok Braces for Rising PM2.5 Levels Amid Cool Weather

Bangkok is set to experience increased pollution levels over the weekend as PM2.5 particles hang heavy in the air, exacerbated by cool weather and poor circulation, according to the Pollution Control Department. Unsafe PM2.5 concentrations were recorded in 36 areas across the city, with Nong Khaem district leading the pack at 51.1µg/m³.

These fine particulate matters were measured between 19.5µg/m³ and 53.8µg/m³ early this morning. After the floods, air pollution follows in Thailand. Bangkok and Chiang Mai have made it into the top 50 cities worldwide for small dust particle pollution, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir.

Trade agreements fuel growth in Thai agricultural exports

Thailand’s agricultural exports grew by 8% year on year in the first eight months of 2024, valued at $19.826 billion, the Department of International Trade Negotiations said. Of the total, 69% of exports were to countries with whom Thailand has free trade agreements, amounting to $13.774 billion (430 billion baht), department Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rain in 24 provinces and urging vigilance regarding the powerful tropical storm Trami. Northern Thailand will experience cool weather and strong winds, while the southern seas will see high waves.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, particularly in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Cambodian-Thai trade up 10%, tops US$3 billion Jan-Sept

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand continues as usual, reaching over US$3.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, an increase of more than 10% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, after China, the U.S. and Vietnam, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

GDCE statistics show that from January to September, total trade between Cambodia and Thailand amounted to $3.169 billion, up 12.4% from the same period in 2023. Continued …

IMF forecasts 3.2% global growth for 2024-25, with Thailand trailing ASEAN

The global war against inflation has largely been won — and at surprisingly little cost to economic growth, the International Monetary Fund declared Tuesday.

In its latest assessment of the global economy, the IMF predicted that worldwide inflation will cool from 6.7% last year to 5.8% this year and to 4.3% in 2025. It estimates that inflation will fall even faster in the world’s wealthy countries, from 4.6% last year to 2.6% this year and 2% — the target range for most major central banks — in 2025.
