Hua Hin’s new downtown food court is a delight

Expat News finally made a visit to Hua Hin’s newest food court, located in the middle of downtown. We were pleasantly surprised.

“The Patio” is hidden down a narrow alley directly across the street from the clock tower. A small blue sign is all that marks the spot. Developers have remade a hollowed-out space within the surrounding buildings, only a short walk through alleys or Phetkasem Road to the touristy Night Market.

Care evidently was taken in selecting food vendors, as there was a wide variety of choices, and not many duplicate vendors. Whole, salted tilapia, baked potatoes with the trimmings, meat and seafood kabobs, a variety of Thai dishes, and even pizza are available, but hardly the end of the offerings. There is also a full bar and live entertainment.

One might expect the prices to mirror the outrageous prices of the Night Market or the Cicada market, but prices at The Patio were much lower, although higher than other food courts where the rent is probably much lower. There is plenty of seating in the open air environment, and even with the crowd we saw that night, the vibe was quiet and friendly.

Public Songkran events in Hua Hin

Hua Hin is gearing up for a vibrant and larger-than-ever Songkran festival, which will take place between April 11-13. Songkran is, of course, the traditional Thai New Year, originally observed as a three-day national holiday from April 13 to 15.

The traditional activities are the pouring of scented water onto sacred Buddha images and the palms of one’s parents, as well as the famous water-splashing activity. But for many people, and in many parts of the country, Songkran means three days of water fights. Continued …

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was slammed by netizens after saying that the liberal cannabis policy had caused huge damage to the Thai people, with this outstripping any economic benefit.

Srettha, who mentioned this during an interview on a possible policy to relist cannabis as a category 5 narcotic, was sternly ticked off by some online users for allegedly not understanding the regulations and the network that is calling for the issuance of a cannabis bill to amend the current law, because large amounts are being smuggled in from neighboring countries, which is negatively affecting pharmacists and villagers who are using the plant for medical purpose. World Bank cuts Thai growth to 2.8% on weaker exports

Thailand’s economic growth is expected at 2.8% this year before accelerating to 3.0% in 2025, the World Bank said on Monday, on account of weak exports and a delayed budget.

The growth outlook for 2024 and 2025 was reduced from 3.2% and 3.1%, respectively, as forecast in December. Continued …

Newly merged True Corp eyes wider market share

Telecom giant True Corp. is hoping to capture 65% of the market through its latest collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The main focus of the expansion will be selling SIM cards and roaming services to foreigners, True Corp.’s CEO Manat Manavutiveth said on Monday.

Bookings for electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to keep growing throughout the Bangkok International Motor Show, thanks to the launch of new EV models and sales promotion campaigns, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

More than 9 million foreign tourists recorded in first quarter

Thailand welcomed 9,370,297 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and March 31, a 44% jump year on year, the Tourism and Sports Ministry reported on Monday. These visitors have generated tourism income of around 454.65 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs, it added.

China was the top source market for foreign tourists to Thailand, with 1,756,337 arrivals, followed by Malaysia (1,168,574), Russia (622,813), South Korea (558,873), India (472,952), Germany (315,033), Laos (308,097), the UK (290,486), the U.S. (280,248) and Japan (271,427). Continued …

Passenger charges rise at six major Thai airports

Passenger service charges (PSC) at six major Thai airports have seen an increase, as announced by the Airports of Thailand. The charges, applicable on both domestic and international departing flights, have been raised at Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Don Mueang, Hat Yai, Phuket and Suvarnabhumi airports.

Dangerously thick smog intensifies, expands

Red-coded levels of PM2.5 dust have increased and expanded from the north into parts of the central plain and the northeast, with the worst levels in Chiang Mai, this morning.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that 21 provinces faced red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Hua Hin discusses ways to combat drought season water shortage

In response to the looming water shortage during the hot season, officials at Hua Hin Municipality met on Friday to discuss ways to maintain an adequate water supply.

79 confirmed Covid cases at PKK prison

The Covid-19 situation at Prachuap Khiri Khan prison is set to be managed by an imminent emergency operations center (EOC), following the identification of infection clusters. This development comes as the public health permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, reported intensified surveillance in the wake of 79 confirmed Covid cases at the prison.

The first infection was detected on March 27 after a 35-year-old female inmate exhibiting influenza-like symptoms tested positive for Covid upon her admission to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. Road safety concerns during Songkran addressed

Officials have met in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province to discuss ways to reduce the rates of road incidents during one of Thailand’s most celebrated holidays.

The officials noted that accidents tend to occur more frequently on secondary roads. Consequently, the decision was made to reallocate resources from main roads to enhance safety measures on these less-monitored paths. 86 tigers rescued from Thailand temple die

More than 80 tigers that were rescued from a temple in Thailand have died from a viral disease, according to local media reports.

The Buddhist temple – Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua, known as Tiger Temple, in Kanchanaburi province, west of Bangkok – was a tourist attraction where visitors took selfies with tigers and bottle-fed cubs. Rescue workers at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation branch in Wichit Municipality, Phuket, have been kept busy with a surge in reptile sightings. Even before the onset of the rainy season the task of managing the movement of these creatures has become a daily routine.

Yesterday, a massive python and a baby monitor lizard were captured in Soi Thepanusorn. The first call for assistance came early, at 9am, when a small monitor lizard had managed to sneak into a local’s house in Moo 4, Wichit. 30 rainmaking planes to battle drought, pollution

Baht falls to three-month low as US inflation delays expected rate cut

The baht hit a three-month low against the U.S. dollar yesterday, slipping below 36 to the dollar. This was attributed to higher than anticipated U.S. inflation, which led the market to predict a delay in the Federal Reserve’s first interest rate cut, initially expected in May.

Bangkok urges work from home amid rise in PM2.5

Levels of fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) soared in most Bangkok districts on Wednesday, prompting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to call on state agencies and private organizations to allow their staff to work from home Thursday and Friday.

Court orders government to form urgent plan to address PM2.5

The Administrative Court in Chiang Mai yesterday ordered Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the National Environment Board to draw up an emergency plan within 90 days to deal with the PM2.5 pollution problem in northern provinces and to develop short- and long-term plans to deal with it.

Split-second decision saved mother’s life at Suphan Buri fireworks plant

As Thailand and the province of Suphan Buri, just to the northwest of Bangkok, mourn the deaths of 23 people in a catastrophic firework explosion, it emerged that one fortunate woman survived. Namfon Bunkom, in a tizzy, just minutes before the explosion, hastily departed the building. Her son, who normally collected money from her, had failed to turn up and was at home instead.

Namfon’s flustered decision, a near-run thing because of her commitment to work, saved her life. However, any joy or relief for the Thai woman was subdued. Afterwards, she confirmed that her mother and many of the people she knew had perished. Continued … 

500kg of explosives in storage at factory

Authorities estimate that the fireworks factory in Suphan Buri may have had at least 500 kilograms of explosive materials stored in its compound before the blast on Wednesday afternoon.

The explosion occurred at village Moo 3 in tambon Salakhao of Muang district at about 3.30pm, killing 23 workers instantly. The explosion also caused damage to four houses located about 300 meters from the factory. Continued …

The Commerce Ministry is keeping a close watch on prices in 18 categories in the first quarter, with costs nudging up for animal feed raw materials, the minimum wage is adjusted, and transport costs rise as a result of the Red Sea attacks.

The 14.8 million tons of mineral resources discovered recently in Phang Nga province may not be entirely lithium, a rare mineral that is a key component for making batteries for electric vehicles, a government official clarified today.

Thailand halts poultry imports from Belgium, France

Thailand has suspended poultry imports from Belgium and three provinces of France in a bid to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The announcement by the Department of Livestock Development, published in the Royal Gazette on Thursday, will be in effect for nine days.

The move follows a World Organization for Animal Health report on the spread of HPAI in both countries. Baht depreciation expected to deepen amid global market volatility

EV, battery demand to spur Thai company’s revenue

Growing demand for commercial electric vehicles and batteries is expected to boost the total revenue of Energy Absolute (EA), a renewable energy and EV developer and operator, to reach a record high of more than 41 billion baht this year, up from 27.5 billion baht in 2022.

Thai PM says use of cannabis must be regulated within six months

Speaking in New York, Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said that his government will amend the law on cannabis, to restrict its use to medical purposes and to control retail cannabis outlets, within six months. (There are a reported more than 12,000 cannabis-related businesses in Thailand.)

During his interview with Bloomberg, the prime minister said that, since cannabis was decriminalized in Thailand last year, by removing it from the Category 5 drugs list, it has become the first country in Asia where cannabis is available for medical, as well as recreational purposes, resulting in the rapid growth of retail outlets offering cannabis and its extracts over the counter. SAT-1, a new satellite terminal at Suvarnabhumi airport, successfully underwent the third and final full-scale trial operation on Thursday night prior to the soft opening scheduled for Sept. 28.

Tablets for students plan resurrected

Illegal Thai gun owners given 30 days to ‘trigger’ compliance
