Jimmy Carter, 39th US president and noted humanitarian, has died

Former President Jimmy Carter, honored more widely for his humanitarian work around the globe after his presidency than for his White House tenure during a tumultuous time, has died. He was 100.

Carter died Sunday in his hometown of Plains, Georgia. 54% tariff on wine imports eliminated ‘indefinitely’

Thailand is cutting alcohol taxes and tariffs in a bid to lower the cost of a night out and attract more tourists. A 54% tariff on wine imports will be “exempted indefinitely”, according to local media accounts of a Thai cabinet meeting, while excise duties on locally produced wine will be cut to 10% or below.

The measure is designed not only to expand the budding domestic industry, but also to add to supplies of less-expensive alcohol. The government had in recent years increased tariffs on wine in a bid to raise revenues. A police pickup truck crashed into a lamp post, snapping it in two, resulting in injuries to a police lieutenant colonel and two passengers. The incident occurred on a roadside in Cha Am.

A total of 93 fatalities and 575 injuries have been reported across Thailand over the first two days of the New Year’s holiday period, according to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

Mangrove forest  will soon be exempt from land tax to empower the country’s marine ecological system and rich biodiversity, says the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR).

DMCR chief Pinsak Surasawadi said the cabinet recently approved a proposal for waiving tax on privately owned virgin mangrove forests to mitigate the problems of fertile wetlands being transformed into agricultural land. Under the Land and Building Tax Act 2019, any property classified as vacant land or not being used properly must be taxed at a higher rate than areas used for agriculture. Thunderstorms possible tomorrow

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in certain areas. Bangkok and central regions are expected to experience the most severe conditions, affecting 22 provinces in total.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms are expected in 30% of the area, with heavy rain, particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 34°C. Easterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h. Lax Law Enforcement Cited for Alarming Road Fatalities in Thailand

Advocates are raising concerns about insufficient enforcement of road safety laws, which they believe is significantly contributing to Thailand’s staggering road fatality rate. On average, the country registers around 48 road deaths daily.

Speaking at a recent event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, advocates pressed for immediate improvements in law enforcement. The event, supported by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Center, threw light on Thailand’s grim statistics. Facebook scams cost 718 million baht in Thailand last year

Facebook scams and fraudulent activities have inflicted significant financial damage, totaling 718 million baht over the past year, according to the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong.

500,000 krathong floats collected in Bangkok waterways

A total of 514,590 krathong floats were collected from Bangkok waterways after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down 19.6% from last year. Lat Krabang district saw the highest number of floats.

On Saturday, officials from the Department of Environment, the Department of Drainage and Sewerage and all 50 district offices completed the collection and sorting of the floats around 5am Saturday, having started at 8pm Friday. Continued …

Pattaya authorities and fishermen collect debris after Loy Krathong Festival

Officials from the Pattaya Environmental Department, along with local fishermen, launched a clean-up operation along the Pattaya Beach at 3 M on Nov. 16. The team worked together to collect krathong (floating lantern) debris along a 5-kilometer stretch of the beach, including Jomtien Beach.

The clean-up effort came in the aftermath of the Loy Krathong Festival, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month, when both Thai and international tourists participated in the traditional ritual of floating krathongs to pay respects to the goddess of water, Phra Mae Khongkha. Though Miss Thailand, Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri, won fourth place in Miss Universe 2024 in Mexico on Sunday, several fans in Thailand praised her for her achievement in the final round. A 21-year-old Phuket native, her family runs a hotel in the southern island province. She is currently studying in Thammasat University’s Faculty of Political Science. Escaped Monkeys Cause Mayhem at Thai Police Station in Lop Buri

In a bizarre turn of events, approximately 200 monkeys broke free from their enclosure at the Pho Khao Ton monkey nursery, located in Lop Buri’s Muang district, and made their way to the nearby Tha Hin police station. The incident unfolded on Saturday evening, causing significant commotion and surprising both residents and law enforcement officers.

The nursery, which houses about 300 monkeys captured from Lop Buri’s streets, faced an unforeseen challenge when the cage structure failed to contain its inhabitants. Curing loneliness

Studies have shown that loneliness and isolation can have a negative health impact, comparable to risks associated with smoking up to 15 cigarettes or drinking six glasses of alcohol per day.

According to a report by the National Economic and Social Development Council, the number of Thais who received mental health services increased from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023. The National Environment Board has resolved to enforce the Euro 6 standards for petrol internal combustion engines (ICE) from Jan. 1 next year, Industry Minister Akanat Promphan said on Sunday.

During its third meeting for this year on Friday, the NEB had emission standards for ICE engines on its agenda, Akanat said. Baht tipped to rise to 36.1 to the greenback

The baht could appreciate further to 36.1 to the U.S. dollar in the short term following recent gains to a one-month high on Monday, as weaker than expected U.S. economic data prompted the market to anticipate the Federal Reserve may start trimming U.S. interest rates in September.

The Thai currency led Asian currency gains, trading at 36.4 baht to the dollar on Monday morning, up 0.4% from Friday’s close of 36.58, as investors rushed to sell dollars after personal consumption expenditure (PCE) and core PCE pointed to cooling U.S. inflation. Continued …

Bus routes to link airports

State-run bus operator Transport Co. will launch bus services to three major airports run by Airports of Thailand (AoT) and open ticketing offices in an effort to allow seamless travel to destinations in other provinces, the company announced on Monday.

Baby twin elephants receive blessings from monks

The Royal Elephant Kraal Village in Ayutthaya’s Suan Prik subdistrict on Sunday hosted a merit-making ceremony to celebrate the world’s first twin elephants of different sexes reaching the age of one month. A 36-year-old elephant named Pang Jamjuree gave birth to male and female calves on the night of June 7. The male calf weighs in at 104.9kg and the female at 62.15kg. Blaze Takes Lives of 21 Cats from Poor Woman, 5 Survive

A tragic fire broke out at 4-story commercial building in a residential area in Bangkok, late Sunday night, killing 21 cats that were under the care of a female traditional massage therapist.

Officials took 10 minutes to control the fire. There were no human injuries or fatalities. However, 21 cats on the second floor died. Officials managed to save five cats that had inhaled smoke. Myanmar rebels flooding Thailand with meth

Armed ethnic groups are producing more illicit drugs to traffic in or through Thailand to finance their fight against the forces of the Myanmar government, a senior army officer said on Monday.

Thai government seeks 7 billion baht for EV subsidies

The Thai government plans to request an additional 7 billion baht in funding to support the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs). This effort aims to subsidize 35,000 EVs, with expectations for EV production facilities to compensate with 80,000 to 90,000 units in the first year. Recriminalization of hemp, pot would wipe out Thai cannabis market worth billions

More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.

The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. Why are so many foreigners residing in Thailand problematic types?

I can’t help but notice all the negative aspects about many of the expats I’ve come across in Thailand. It’s disheartening to see that so many foreigners seem to fall into one of several categories: unpleasant, criminal, or otherwise problematic.

Firstly, the number of rude and disrespectful expats is staggering. It’s as if some people left their manners at the airport. From obnoxious behavior in public to a complete lack of respect for Thai culture and people, these individuals don’t add anything positive to the backdrop. A Russian man has been arrested and illegal drugs seized from his room in Hua Hin town of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Heavy rainfall in Phuket disrupted flights and caused widespread flooding across the tourist island province. The ongoing drought in Thailand’s Buriram province has resulted in a severe water shortage, forcing about 300 households across three villages in the Mueang district to buy water. The crisis is due to the drying up of groundwater sources, which the villages have traditionally relied on, as they don’t have access to local water pipelines.

The villages of old and new Ban Nong Makhuea, and Ban Nong Hua Ling, despite being near the Huai Jorakhe Mak reservoir, which serves the Mueang district, have no direct access to its water. EEC prepares for water shortages

A water shortage, caused by an El Niño-induced drought, in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) could be avoided as water supplies have been prepared for factories to help them get through the dry season this year, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

There are 41 industrial estates housing 6,000 factories in the EEC, which covers parts of Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao. Their demand for water stands at 1.5 million cubic meters a day. Continued …

Doctor raises alarm over rising Covid-19 admissions and deaths

A lecturer in Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine has warned Thais to be more vigilant against Covid-19, saying infection rates appeared to be worsening, with higher hospital admissions, deaths and severe cases.

Warning over minimum wage increase

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that if the government raises the minimum daily wage to 400 baht nationwide, it may lead to GDP growing at a rate below 2.6% and increase the rate of inflation to 3%, affecting consumer purchasing power.

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the UTCC, said a survey of 403 business operators across the country, carried out between April 22-26 and comprising manufacturing (36.9%), trade (33%), and the service sector (30.1%), found that an appropriate minimum daily wage would be 370 baht per day. Thailand was one of the top three countries in the Asia-Pacific region to suffer a significant surge in financial fraud scams last year, according to Google’s 2023 Bad Apps Report.
