Bank of Thailand promises fix after accounts frozen without warning

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has pledged to tighten its procedures for freezing and unfreezing suspected bank accounts after technical issues and police instructions led to several customers’ balances being displayed as negative. The central bank said the problems caused confusion and distress for affected individuals, but measures are being introduced to prevent a recurrence.

According to Daranee Saeju, assistant governor overseeing the Payment Systems Policy and Financial Consumer Protection Group, the central bank identified two separate causes behind the incidents. The first occurred on Sept. 1 when some banks failed to update end-of-day transactions, leaving accounts showing outdated balances. This technical error was corrected the following day and banks were instructed to compensate affected customers and strengthen safeguards. Continued …

Foreign nominee land, business ownership under the microscope

Thailand’s Ombudsman has urged parliament to amend laws and close loopholes that allow foreign nationals to use Thai nominees to acquire land and control businesses, a practice that authorities say is widespread in economically strategic provinces.

Ombudsman Songsak Saicheua said that while Thailand’s existing laws prohibit foreign nationals from owning land and restrict foreign control of certain businesses, some have found ways to circumvent the rules. Common methods include marrying Thai citizens, setting up companies with nominal Thai shareholders while foreigners manage operations, or using other intermediaries to mask actual ownership. Thailand’s top economist, Anusorn Thamjai of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), is sounding the alarm. H he interim government that a stronger baht could hit an already fragile economy hard this year.

Thailand’s tourism to apply emergency plan to revive the industry

Thailand, traditionally a strong tourism market in Southeast Asia, is currently experiencing a noticeable dip in tourist numbers during 2025. Projections suggest a revenue decrease of about 5%, with approximately 3 million fewer tourists visiting compared to previous years.

This decline, the most significant in recent memory, has understandably caused concern among government officials and those working in the industry. After all, Thailand’s tourism contributed $42.7 billion to the economy last year and remains a vital part of the nation’s financial health. With rising labor costs, increased energy prices, and a relatively short average tourist stay (under seven days), Thailand has announced an ambitious urgent plan to try to reverse this downward trend. Pattaya’s past holds back growth as Western crowds decline and Asia steps in

Once the playground of Western tourists seeking sun, nightlife, and beaches, Pattaya is undergoing a demographic shift. The city, long associated with European and American visitors, is seeing a steady decline in long-time Western attendees. Meanwhile, a new wave of tourists from China, India, Russia, South Korea, and Japan is reshaping the face of the city.

Despite Thailand welcoming over 22 million tourists so far this year, Pattaya is struggling to capture the financial benefits. While other destinations see increased spending, Pattaya’s economy reflects a city still adapting to its changing audience. Many businesses are built around Western expectations, leaving a disconnect with the preferences of the new visitors, who often seek different experiences, from cultural activities and family-oriented attractions to shopping and culinary tourism. Tracing ‘waste colonialism’ in Southeast Asia

For much of the last 50 years, high-income countries have consumed massive amounts of plastic and trash and given little thought to what would become of it. This was largely because it was out of sight, out of mind, as much of that trash ended up being shipped overseas, first to China, and then recently to Southeast Asia and other Global South countries.

But this model could be coming to an end as some of the top waste-importing countries in Southeast Asia have started to ban foreign waste imports this year. Thailand and Indonesia both announced they would stop importing plastic waste in January in an effort to combat toxic pollution. Malaysia prohibited the import of plastic scrap on July 1, Vietnam has announced that a ban on plastic waste imports will go into effect sometime this year. Continued …

The project began on July 22, 2024, and was originally scheduled to be completed in February this year. However, work was halted due to issues involving underground utilities and soil subsidence. Electric bills to remain steady through 2025

Electricity bills during the last four months of this year will not be further reduced as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has decided to maintain the current power tariff despite positive factors that could lead to a lower rate.

The tariff rate, which is used to determine electricity prices, stands at 3.98 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), applicable until the end of August. The 3.98-baht rate is among three options the ERC unveiled yesterday to seek the public’s opinion. The others were 4.87 and 5.10 baht a unit. Continued …

Are damaged Thai banknotes still usable?

Whether damaged Thai banknotes are accepted generally depends on the discretion of individual vendors. Minor damage, such as a small tear at the corner, often does not prevent their use for payment.

However, if the banknote is significantly damaged, such as being torn by 20% of its size, and the user is unsure whether it can be used, the note can be exchanged for a new one at a bank, under the conditions set by the Bank of Thailand (BoT), as follows: Continued …

Zika Virus Spreads During Thai Rainy Season

Thai health authorities are urging heightened vigilance as the Zika virus continues to spread across the country during the current rainy season. The Department of Disease Control, under the Ministry of Public Health, today issued a warning about the increase in cases, with particular concern for three provinces reporting high patient numbers: Phayao, Bangkok, and Maha Sarakham.

The bill extends maternity leave for female workers from the current 98 days to 120 days, while also establishing paternity leave for fathers and spouses to assist with childcare responsibilities.

Under the new provisions, employers must provide full salary compensation for paternity leave, capped at 15 working days. This marks a major advancement in Thailand’s workplace policies supporting new parents. Continued …

Thai food prices surge 106.5% in 13 years, cost of living soars amid rising rent and inflation

According to research conducted by Agency for Real Estate Affairs (AREA), food prices in Thailand have surged by 106.5% over the past 13 years, from 31 baht per dish in 2012 to 64 baht per dish in 2025. The study focused on prices in the Silom, Surawong, and Sathorn areas, which are considered key business districts in Bangkok.

Despite the rise in food prices, the minimum wage in the same period only increased by 33.3% from 300 baht to 400 baht, creating a significant gap between wages and living costs. Continued …

Trump’s 36% tariff a disaster for Thai economy, banks warn

Thailand is facing growing pressure from the looming deadline for negotiations over retaliatory U.S. tariffs, with just two weeks left. The risk is especially high if the U.S. imposes tariffs on Thai imports that are significantly higher than those on competing countries, threatening not just exports but the broader economy.

Piti Tantakasem, CEO of TMBThanachart Bank (ttb), said a 36% tariff would be catastrophic for Thailand. While some countries have already conceded to the U.S. by offering tax breaks in exchange for lower import duties, Thailand now faces an economic threat of historic proportions. Continued …

Thailand to offer ‘no tariffs on 90% of US goods’

Thailand is ready to offer scrapping tariffs on 90% of U.S. goods, up from 60% in an earlier proposal, in a bid to avert a punishing 36% levy threatened by President Donald Trump, according to a business group advising Thai negotiators.

The government’s third proposal would potentially eliminate tariffs and non-tariff barriers on about 10,000 U.S. products, Chanintr Chalisarapong, vice chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said yesterday. Continued …

Detailed Analysis of Trade War Impacts on Thai Consumers

The U.S.-China trade war has intensified, with the U.S. imposing a total tariff of 125% on Chinese goods by April 10, and China retaliating with 84% tariffs on U.S. goods. This escalation, marked by rapid tariff hikes in early 2025 (e.g., U.S. increases of 10% on February 1 and March 4, and China’s 15% tariff on U.S. goods on March 10), disrupts global trade patterns, affecting countries like Thailand, which is deeply integrated into international supply chains.

Thailand’s economy, heavily reliant on exports to the U.S. and China, faces both challenges and opportunities, with downstream effects on consumers. Continued …

Thailand risks major losses if US pork market opens under 0% tariff deal

Kasikorn Research Center has raised concerns over the prolonged U.S.–Thailand tariff negotiations, especially the risks of a 0% tariff exchange that would open Thai markets to specific U.S. agricultural products — most notably pork — while reducing tariffs in other sectors. The deal, analysts warn, could hurt Thailand far more than it benefits it.

Following the U.S. government’s announcement of a 36% reciprocal tariff on Thai imports, effective Aug. 1, Thai policymakers are under pressure to respond. One of the most vulnerable sectors is agriculture, particularly pork and offal, which have emerged as key bargaining chips in negotiations. Continued …

K-Research puts GDP growth at 1.2%

GDP growth this year could be as low as 1.2% or even less if the government fails to clinch a deal with the U.S. that ensures the reciprocal tariff is competitive with those granted to neighboring countries, said Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

The think-tank has maintained its growth forecast at 1.4% this year, but Burin Adulwattana, K-Research’s managing director and chief economist, referred to the current downside risks for a possible downgrade. Continued …

Tourism Ministry delays ‘Travel Fee’ collection, eyes mid-2026 rollout

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced a delay in the implementation of the long-planned travel fee for foreign tourists, locally referred to as the “Kha Yeap Pan Din” (literally, “stepping onto Thai soil” fee). Officials have confirmed that the measure will not be enforced in 2025 as initially planned.

Chakrapol Tangsutthitham, assistant minister of Tourism and Sports, stated that the decision was made following a review by Minister Sorawong Thienthong, who deemed the current timing inappropriate due to ongoing external uncertainties. Continued …

Less Tourism To Thailand: Is There A Reason For This Trend?

Thailand, which was formerly a top draw card among tourists in Southeast Asia, has been experiencing a noticeable downturn in tourist arrivals from over a year ago. Latest figures reveal a 5% fall in the visits made by tourists to the country, with the first half of 2025 seeing a total of 16.6 million visitors, at a reduction of 17.5 million the previous year. The drop was significant in May 2025, in particular, with 14% fewer tourists than the previous year.

This decline is particularly alarming to Thailand, where tourism represents around a fifth of the country’s gross domestic product. At a time when millions of jobs and businesses rely on tourism, these decreasing figures are not simply a figure; rather, they signify an imminent economic struggle which may put the livelihood of many at risk. Rethinking Short-Term Rentals in Thailand

In Thailand, many property owners are increasingly turning to short-term rentals to supplement their income. However, the regulatory environment remains murky — especially when it comes to condominiums. While short-term leasing was previously tolerated under certain interpretations, a 2022 directive from the Department of Lands reaffirmed that condominiums are for residential use only, effectively banning daily rentals.

Despite this restriction, demand from tourists and supply from owners have persisted, fueling a parallel market that often operates outside formal oversight. This unregulated growth poses several problems: it disrupts long-term residents, undermines the authority of condominium associations, and prevents the state from collecting appropriate taxes. Without a modern legal framework, Thailand risks allowing informal practices to erode community trust and economic opportunity alike. Continued …

The Chiang Mai Police responded after a viral video showed several individuals attacking a foreign man outside an entertainment venue. The video depicted the attackers forcibly restraining the man, identified as a 27-year-old Brit, preventing any retaliation while they searched him for valuables.

The incident began at a karaoke bar on Sri Don Chai Road in the bustling Chang Khlan area. BoT pegs growth at sub-2% for 18 months

The Bank of Thailand has assessed the Thai economy is likely to grow at a rate of less than 2% over the next 18 months, primarily due to pressures from U.S. tariff policies.

Speaking at a monetary policy forum yesterday, Piti Disyatat, deputy governor for monetary stability at the central bank, said the heightened uncertainties arising from U.S. tariffs on Thai exports are expected to negatively impact the country’s exports, private investment, and domestic consumption in the second half of 2025 and throughout 2026. Trump imposes new tariffs on 8 countries, including ASEAN members

This move prompted ASEAN leaders to convene in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, where Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as ASEAN’s chair, called for enhanced regional trade, noting that ASEAN is the fifth largest economy in the world, heavily reliant on exports. He expressed concern over the detrimental impact of the U.S. tariffs on ASEAN nations, which have led to intensified trade talks with the U.S. Continued …

Why Some Thais Get Triggered When Westerners Say “Ni Hao” to Them

Is using the Chinese greeting “ni hao” (你好 or hello) on Thais by Westerners considered a racist move? Business owners urge negotiations over US tariffs

With trade tensions exacerbated by the U.S.’s reciprocal tariffs, key business sectors are calling on the Thai government to prioritize negotiations with Washington during the 90-day pause, as the nation is expected to be one of the hardest hit from the tariff rate of 36%, which is significantly higher than the regional and global average.

With exports at risk, analysts and business sectors also warn of far-reaching economic impacts, compounded by China’s slowdown and cooling investor sentiment, particularly regarding vulnerable sectors such as tourism. Continued …

China expected to gain from US tariff move

U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policy is likely to make China even stronger and clarify the trend of manufacturing base relocation from China to other countries, including Thailand, says Sompop Manarungsan, president of the Panyapiwat Institute of Management.

The specialist on the Chinese and U.S. economies warned the Thai government not to rush into agreements with the U.S., urging a thorough consideration of the broader impact. Continued …

Will the global economy stall?

The timing could hardly have been less propitious. Just as the world economy was showing signs of stabilizing, the odds of a policy-induced global recession have risen significantly. The latest update to the Brookings-FT Tiger index reveals a mixed picture, with the financial index declining and private-sector confidence crumbling, even as macroeconomic data (which lag the other indicators) suggest a more benign scenario.

Obviously, the biggest factor is U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policy, which has disrupted world trade and fueled turmoil in financial markets, undermining growth prospects that had looked promising at the start of the year. The U.S. economy performed well in the first quarter of 2025: output and employment grew robustly through March, and inflation fell gradually. But that all changed in April with Trump’s announcement of “reciprocal” tariffs aimed at practically all U.S. trading partners. Continued …

Trade war spurs decoupling between China and the United States

The ongoing trade war between the United States and China has significantly accelerated the decoupling of their economies, driven by escalating tariffs and retaliatory measures. Recent developments show the U.S. imposing cumulative tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods, with effective rates reaching 156%, while China faces tariffs as high as 245% on its imports to the U.S. due to its retaliatory actions.

These measures have pushed U.S.-China trade toward an expected decline of over 80%, described by the World Trade Organization as “tantamount to a decoupling.” Continued …

Casino Bill Stalls Amid Fierce Opposition and Coalition Tensions

The Pheu Thai Party faces a major setback, as its casino-entertainment complex bill encounters fierce resistance from multiple quarters. Initially set for a fast-tracked approval by April 9, the bill’s first reading in the House of Representatives has been postponed until the next parliamentary session on July 2.

The decision comes amid heated opposition, particularly from Bhumjaithai Party members and critics outside parliament. Interior Minister and Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul assured there’s no internal party turmoil, despite party Secretary-general Chaichanok Chidchob opposing the bill in parliament. Egg price rises hurting consumers, traders alike

Director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, Wittayakorn Maneenetr, said the main cause of the price increase is the extreme heat, which has led to a drop-off in egg production, with hens laying fewer and smaller eggs. Continued …

Thai Banks in Focus Amid Economic Slowdown

As Thailand’s economy shows signs of slowing, the banking sector is one to watch for its resilience and profit potential. In 2024, commercial banks reported solid earnings to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), and early Q1 2025 results suggest continued strength.

Bangkok Bank (BBL) led the pack, reporting a Q1/2025 net profit of Bt12.6 billion, up 19.9% YoY. The increase was driven by higher operating income, particularly net interest income of Bt31.9 billion and a net interest margin of 2.9%. Non-interest income also rose, fueled by strong fee-based services and gains from investments. Continued …

China heats up Thailand’s Bt30-billion air conditioner market

Thailand’s air conditioner market, valued at over 34.5 billion baht, is expected to grow by 6% this year, according to estimates from major electronics brand LG. The company attributes this projected growth to delayed seasonal heat in 2025, with warmer weather arriving in mid-February instead of early February as in previous years.

Mitsubishi, another leading player in the market, forecasts a slightly lower growth rate of 5%, with the market valued at approximately 33.5 billion baht. Both projections, however, fall short of the impressive 14% growth recorded last year, driven by persistent and extreme heat that boosted demand across the country. Continued …

Foreign tourists to pay more as Japan rolls out dual-pricing system

Thais heading to Japan should prepare for potentially spending more, as the country is set to introduce a “two-tier” pricing system at major tourist attractions from July. The policy will set different rates for Japanese citizens and foreign visitors in a bid to tackle over-tourism, while generating additional revenue.

Japan, which has set a target of 60 million foreign tourists annually by 2030, has seen record-breaking visitor numbers, particularly from China and South Korea. The weak yen has further fueled tourism, with 36.86 million international arrivals recorded last year, surpassing Thailand’s 35 million for the first time. Continued …

How the Rural Doctors Movement started a healthcare revolution in Thailand

For Dr. Vichai Chokevivat, the harsh reality of healthcare in rural Thailand wasn’t something he studied; it was something he lived. As a young doctor, he witnessed families, already on the brink of poverty, forced to sell their land, or in some cases, even their children, just to pay for basic medical treatment.

“It was such a painful and bitter experience,” he says. “We dreamed of providing free medical care to the sick.” That dream, shared by many of his colleagues, didn’t take shape in boardrooms but in the remote, underserved corners of the country. Continued …

Like bamboo swaying in the wind

When a powerful country comes courting, a smaller country is wise not to reject the courtship out of hand, even if it isn’t fully swayed or convinced. The lesser of the two powers may appear to be an eager, willing and ready partner, but there may well be a measure of ambiguity behind the ready acquiescence and responsive smile.

Beijing has repeatedly urged Bangkok to inject some speed into a delay-ridden rail project designed to connect Thailand to China via Laos by high-speed train. Here’s How the Rich History pf Bangkok’s Canals Connects to the Forward-thinking City

Bangkok’s first boundary was described in water. When King Rama I established the capital in 1782, it was on an island his predecessor had made by cutting a canal across a peninsula in the Chao Phraya River. But when I drift through the city today, it’s easy for me to forget this defining relationship between land and water.

Easy to be lost among malls with names that signal their preeminence (Paragon, Centralworld) or their sparkle (Palladium, Platinum). But then, when I cross a bridge over the Saen Saep Canal, my attention is drawn to the brown water and the commuter boat passing beneath me. I imagine following the boat upriver, past stilt homes, open-air markets, and temples, before it enters another neighborhood: my childhood. Continued …

Thai border run woes: From easy as pie to digital fly, book before you buy

Once upon a time, jetting off for a Thai visa was as easy as pie. A quick border dash to a nearby country, pop into a consulate in Laos, Malaysia, or Vietnam, and voilà! You’d be done and dusted, ready for an evening drink by the Mekong River. Ah, the good old days!

But hold onto your hats, because the digital age has swept in like a whirlwind, turning the visa game on its head. In recent years, many consulates have swapped the spontaneous stroll-in method for an appointment-only system, meaning you have to jump online and nab a slot before making your visa run. Continued …

Gold prices to sparkle amid global turmoil, US policy

Gold prices are primed for a glittering rise this week, says the Gold Research Center (GRC). Driven by a trio of global factors – the Middle East turmoil, cues from the Bank of Japan’s (BoJ) policy moves, and faltering U.S. economic signals — this precious metal is sparking keen market interest.

While most experts brace for stable or dipping gold rates, the GRC Gold Survey bucks the trend with predictions of domestic price hikes. Last week, the Gold Traders Assn. reported 96.5% of gold bars in the local market swinging between 42,750 and 44,000 baht per baht weight (around 15.1 grams), closing with a glistening 43,700 baht, a 1,150 baht leap from the week before.
