Covid infections rise

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is seeking partnerships with at least 11 international airlines in an effort to bolster rising and mature markets in the second half this year.

Tourism firms seek supply-side initiatives

The private sector has collectively called for attention to be paid to tourism’s supply side after the prime minister insisted on refraining from the collection of a 300-baht tourism fee from foreign tourists, which was meant to be used to set up a tourism development fund.

“The government’s performance over the past eight months would rate as 10 out of 10 for stimulating tourism demand, mainly attributed to visa policies. Long way to go for Hua Hin Airport international status

Hua Hin’s long journey toward a fully functioning, modern airport has reached yet another juncture with the latest updates on its ongoing upgrades.

The long-standing issue of the airport’s inability to accommodate larger aircraft such as the A320, which seats up to 180 passengers, remains a significant hurdle. Plans to revamp the tunnel entry site, which requires expansion of the tunnel entering Hua Hin, a critical factor in this limitation, are underway with an additional 300 million baht allocated to the project. Anukul Peedkaew, the permanent secretary of the Thai Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), has published statistical data on the NationalThailand website on the rate of Thai children being born in the past year, showing the lowest rates in 71 years.

Police raids in response to murder plot linked with Bt1 billion family business concern

Thai police on Friday morning cut the head off a dangerous plot that was already in motion to murder a businessman, his mother and their lawyer. The suspected mastermind behind the diabolical scheme, however, turned out to be the man’s father and the woman’s estranged husband.

Police with the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) were alerted to the plot in November linked to a substantial business dispute. The matter became urgent in recent days when investigators detected three hit men pursuing the target while traveling in Bangkok. House says yes to marriage equality

The House’s approval of all four bills seeking to amend the Civil and Commercial Code to allow same-sex marriages in the country during their first reading has received positive responses from members of society, according to government spokesman Chai Watcharonke.

PTT Exploration and Production Public Co. (PTTEP) has received the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice 2023 in the environmental improvement category with gold level from the green organization, for the PTTEP reforestation project. “We don’t want our brothers and sisters in other parts of the country to face the impacts we have been facing,” says Thanawan Kainok, addressing a panel discussion on the “Past, Present and Future of Potash in Isan” in Wanon Niwat district, in northeast Thailand’s Sakon Nakhon province.

Climate-smart rice farming the future

Rice is Thailand’s most important food crop and an integral part of Thai culture and society. At the same time, rice farmers remain among the poorest occupational groups in Thailand and are extremely vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate — rice farming is a water-intensive and temperature-sensitive activity conducted in a climate that is becoming increasingly characterized by longer dry spells and higher temperatures.

Government to seek higher minimum wage next year

The government will go on the offensive in its push for a large daily wage hike for workers next year after this year’s modest rise, according to government spokesman Chai Wacharonke.

The government was left disappointed after it failed to encourage the tripartite committee on regulating the daily minimum wage to agree to increase wages. The committee agreed to a hike of only between 2 and 16 baht, or an average of 2.4%. The rate has reportedly irked Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. A new study reveals that diet could play a role in the fact that Thai elephant populations are increasing. Padej Laithong, director of the Wildlife Conservation Office of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, announced Tuesday the results of a survey on the behavior of wild elephants in Thailand.

Thailand has pledged a whopping 40% cut in carbon emissions, up from its initial 30%, following the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai.

Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, the Thai minister of Tourism and Sports, publicly revealed the cumulative number of foreign tourists from Jan. 1 to Dec. 20 was at 26,455,680 people, generating income of more than 1.1 trillion baht.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has postponed collecting the controversial tourist tax for fear that Thailand’s tourism industry could be affected. Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, however, clarified on Thursday that the tourist tax would not be revoked.

Change in the tax law does target expats living in Thailand

A former chairman of an international law firm in Bangkok has warned that a new taxation directive issued by the Revenue Department targeting foreign income sources faces a legal challenge and will create more reporting obligations and confusion. The order published on Sept. 15 2altering a 38-year-old interpretation, is a definite step by the government to widen the tax base, meaning more significant reporting requirements, at the very least for expats living in Thailand.

Kitipong Urapeepattanapong, along with other legal experts, including a Supreme Court judge, is calling on the Thai government to overhaul the tax system thoroughly to make it competitive with Hong Kong and Singapore. Continued …

Open to 4am is OK, but alcohol sales are not

The Thai government will initially permit bars and nightclubs in four provinces, including Chonburi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok, to operate until 4am, as announced by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, however, “Every private sector shall follow the laws, especially, the extension of opening service of entertainment districts to 4am, but it does not mean that selling liquor beyond prescribed legal hours: 2am. EVs expected to supercharge 3.5% growth in Thailand auto manufacturing

The Thailand Automotive Institute (TAI) expects the domestic electric vehicle (EV) industry to drive 3.5% growth in auto production this year to 1.95 million units.

Asia’s largest F&B expo smashes expectations with THB120 billion in trade

Thaifex-Anuga Asia 2023, Asia’s largest food and beverage trade show, surged past its 70-billion-baht target to record a whopping 120 billion baht in deals, according to the Commerce Ministry.

Eco-efficiency the key to environmentally friendly farming

Eco-efficiency in agriculture is a key to reducing environmental impact while meeting the increasing demand for food, Katharina Staske, managing director of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) Asia Pacific, said. She made the remarks during the opening ceremony of ”AgriConnect Conference & Exhibition” at True Digital Park in Bangkok.

Under the theme “Good Coffee For Everyone”, the much-awaited Thailand Coffee Fest 2023 will be held from July 13-16 at Impact Exhibition Hall 5–8 in Muang Thong Thani.

Featuring more than 300 cafes and roasters, as well as a wide range of related products and innovative services, the four-day event, a partnership between the Specialty Coffee Assn. of Thailand and The Cloud, will take over a 20,000m² space across the exhibition’s four halls. Weed network fears law change

Citing research by the Ad-Hoc Committee on Systematic Hemp and Cannabis Resolution, Thailand’s Cannabis Future Network has urged three alliance parties not to reinstate the plant as a narcotic drug, as that would be like “getting the first shirt button wrong” and lead to more problems.

Prasitchai Nunual, the network leader, wrote on Monday that before the election this particular ad-hoc committee was set up to discuss removing cannabis from the list in an attempt to study the systemic usage of the plant. Continued …

TAT expects 30-35 million foreign tourists in 2024

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimates 30-35 million foreign tourists will visit the kingdom in 2024, generating 3 trillion baht in total revenue, marking a 100% return to pre-Covid levels. TAT Gov. Yuthasak Supasorn said the recovery is expected to be driven by increased spending per trip.
