Bank of Thailand Forecasts Modest Growth for Remainder of 2024

The Bank of Thailand anticipates slower economic growth in the upcoming third and fourth quarters, attributing this to a high base effect. According to Piti Disyatat, secretary of the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), second-quarter GDP is expected to grow by 1% from the previous quarter, a decline from the 1.5% growth observed in the first quarter. These projections were shared during a monetary policy forum held yesterday.

The central bank now estimates the growth rate for the third and fourth quarters to be between 0.6% and 0.7% per quarter due to the high base effect. Despite this deceleration, economic activities are predicted to increase, driven by improved domestic demand, a recovery in tourism, and accelerated government budget disbursement. Continued …

Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Board of Investment, which controls the LTR, says about 3,000 such visas were issued since the launch in 2022, but the publicity surrounding the new tax regulation has seen a 14% rise in applications. Continued …

Why are there no indigenous Thai car brands?

The recent meeting between Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and executives from major Japanese carmakers, including Honda, Nissan, Isuzu, and Toyota, brings to light a pressing question: Why hasn’t Thailand, a nation with robust manufacturing capabilities and a strategic geographical position, cultivated its own indigenous car brand?

This question is not just about diversifying Thailand’s industrial portfolio; it’s about seizing an opportunity to assert its soft power and entrepreneurial spirit on the global stage. The government’s current focus on promoting the cottage industry and Thai food, while culturally significant, seems to overlook the larger potential of high-impact industrial sectors like automotive manufacturing. Most other provinces affected by the haze had an orange or unhealthy status. Continued …

In its little over three months in power, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s government has faced a surfeit of challenges, as if it has been in power for over a year. However, the guidelines raise significant questions about the efficacy of their enforcement. Ensuring transparency on income accrued offshore poses a daunting task for the government. Continued …

We stand at a pivotal juncture in our political journey. The triumph of the Move Forward party, a manifestation of our collective will, finds itself precariously on the brink of being undone. It’s an audacious subversion by unelected groups that seem to consider Thailand their personal chessboard.
