Earthquake update: 18 dead, 78 still missing

The deadly tremor in Myanmar has left its mark on Thailand, claiming at least 18 lives, with 78 missing as of Sunday. The powerful earthquake wreaked havoc in Bangkok, particularly in Chatuchak, where 10 lives were lost at the State Audit Office building collapse.

Rescue teams continued their search on Sunday amid the debris at the building site. Public Bus Accidents in Thailand Surge by 46.5%

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has revealed a sharp 46.5% increase in accidents involving public buses in 2023. Buses accounted for the highest proportion of these incidents, with 73.0% of cases, driven by driver errors and poorly maintained, aging vehicles. Additionally, unsafe vehicle modifications have exacerbated the risk.

Public transport remains essential, particularly in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, where over 968 million trips were recorded in 2022. However, a troubling rise in fatalities and injuries was reported, with casualties from public bus accidents increasing by more than 105% compared to 2022. Continued …

Power tariff to be capped until next April

In an extension of the government’s current policy, Thailand’s energy minister plans to cap the power tariff until April next year. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Monday that the policy was to keep the average power tariff at no more than 4.18 baht per unit.

Unemployment rises by 1.02% in third quarter

Thailand’s unemployment rate in the third quarter this year stood at 1.02%, increasing from 0.99% recorded for the same period in 2023, with about 410,000 Thais unemployed, a 3.2% increase year on year, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its report on Thai society’s outlook for Q3/2024.

The third quarter unemployment rate is, however, an improvement over the 1.07% recorded in the previous quarter, which was a two-year high, NESDC said. Continued …

Thailand’s household debt falls for the first time in 42 months

Thailand’s household debt dropped in the second quarter of this year to 89.6% of GDP, from 90.7% in the first quarter, which is the first fall in three and a half years, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), today.

Although the decrease is a healthy sign, he noted that household debt in Thailand is still higher than in other countries in the region, but added that if the rate of economic growth can be maintained, household debt is likely to improve accordingly. Continued …

Thai October exports rise 14.6% y/y, above forecast

Thailand’s customs-cleared exports rose 14.6% in October from a year earlier, the commerce ministry said today, beating analysts’ expectations. The reading compared with a forecast 5.2% increase for October in a Reuters poll, and followed September’s 1.1% rise.

Exports totaled $27.22 billion, while imports amounted to $28.02 billion, the latter up 15.9% from a year earlier, the ministry said. Exports, a key driver of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, were boosted by stronger shipments of technology-related products, particularly computers, equipment, and components, the ministry said. Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

Thailand is set to experience heavy rainfall despite hot daytime temperatures, with 33 provinces expected to face severe weather conditions, including heavy rain. The Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts increased rain from today, Aug. 10 to 12, especially in four regions.

Chiang Mai not declared a disaster zone in bow to tourism

The government of Thailand has chosen not to declare Chiang Mai a disaster zone despite escalating air pollution, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. The decision was largely influenced by concerns that such a declaration could negatively impact the province’s tourism industry.

The Bangkok-born PM explained that declaring the province a disaster zone would likely deter foreign tourists, particularly those whose insurance policies do not cover issues arising in disaster-stricken regions. Hazardous smog cloaks 50 provinces

Fifty provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 dust this morning and 13 of them, mainly in the north, with seriously harmful levels of pollution.

The worst reading was in Mae Hong Son and the cleanest air was in Phuket. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, at 159.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. The buying price of gold bars in the country stands at 33,850 baht per baht-weight and the selling price is 33,950 baht per baht-weight, according to the sixth announcement of the day. Wild elephant herd of 100 ‘tramples’ sugarcane dreams in Prachin Buri

Over 100 wild elephants caused chaos and distress to villagers in Khao Maikaew, Kabin Buri in Prachin Buri province, after rampaging through a sugarcane plantation, forcing officials from the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary to push the elephants back.

The Notification of the Ministry of Industry on Management of Waste or Unused Materials B.E. 2566 (2023), enacted under the Factory Act B.E. 2535 (1992), marks a pivotal shift in the responsibilities and liabilities of factory operators as waste generators, which under the new notification no longer end when the waste is collected by a third-party waste processor.
