Hua Hin-Chiang Mai flights reduced to two per week

Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

From Chiang Mai, the new schedule switches to two weekly flights (Friday and Sunday), starting Oct. 30. The one-way is around USD78.40 (THB2,846), including fees and tax. Continued …

Western retirees in Thailand feeling rather insecure

Premier Srettha Thavisin’s new Pheu Thai-led administration has already seen massive investment in Thailand’s short-term visa programs. The mass market Chinese tourists are now 30 days visa-free, at least until February 2024, and appear to have no problem obtaining a further month at immigration if wished.

The sports and tourism ministry is planning to spend 600 million baht in the next financial year to promote marketing campaigns abroad for tourism. Digging deeper at Farm-A-Jarn

For me, it started in Seattle, on Queen Anne Hill, where I sort of grew up. I tried to grow pansies in our front side rock garden. Do you know how much it rains there? My efforts in all that rain were abysmal and the early childhood disappointment of not seeing my pansies’ colorful faces kept me from gardening for years.

79% of Thais want digital wallet money to spend

About 79% of respondents to a National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) poll say that they will accept the 10,000 baht one-time subsidy from the government under the “digital wallet” scheme and will use it to buy goods and services, while 60% believe that the popularity of the ruling Pheu Thai party will suffer if the scheme is scrapped.

Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Government to trial 4 am closing for Thailand’s nightlife venues

The Thai government is working to identify pilot locations for a trial of late-night closing for the country’s nightlife. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says his office is liaising with related parties to find locations where entertainment venues would be allowed to remain open until 4 am.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to use 600 million baht from its central budget to promote the tourism industry during the high season, as fiscal 2024 budget disbursement is expected to be delayed until April next year.

Influenza cases rise five-fold in Thailand

A startling surge in influenza cases has been observed in Thailand this year, with a five-fold increase compared to last year’s monthly averages. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to the public about illegal antiviral medications labeled as oseltamivir being smuggled into the country.

Rising baht forecast to climb higher against dollar

The baht opened at 36.54 baht per U.S. dollar on Wednesday, strengthening from 36.75 at the close of trading yesterday. The dollar weakened after the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell to 4.65% yesterday.

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most popular festivals, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. Video: Cobra caught by wildlife handlers

A cobra lurking near a resident’s yard was captured by wildlife handlers in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The terrified homeowner called the snake catchers for assistance on Oct. 7. Footage shows the volunteers grabbing the three-meter cobra using snake tongs as it tried to hide in a narrow alley beside the house. Israel-Hamas conflict: 20 Thai nationals dead

Foreigners from at least 26 countries have been confirmed killed, taken hostage or are still unaccounted for in the war between Israel and Hamas as of Wednesday.

Thai baht strengthens, US dollar weak, gold rebounds

The Thai baht opened slightly stronger today at 36.90 baht per U.S. dollar after the U.S. dollar weakened amid concerns about the impact of the Israeli-Hamas conflict.

Krung Thai Bank currency analyst Poon Panichpibul said the baht opened this morning stronger than the previous day’s close of 37.11 baht per U.S. dollar, gradually strengthening overnight supported by the dollar’s depreciation due to the bond yield’s decrease. Arrest warrant issued for Burmese man for murder of former diplomat

Royal Thai Police submitted documents and evidence to the Thailand Courts to issue a warrant for the arrest of a Burmese man for the suspected murder of a former Thai diplomat at a house in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. The suspect reportedly escaped arrest outside Bangkok but police believe he is still in Thailand.

Following the death of 63-year-old Wichit Chitwimarn, Deputy Commissioner of Metropolitan Police Division 1 Noppason Poonsawat told the media today that officers discovered Wichit’s mobile phone and tablet missing. Thailand’s low-earth-orbit satellite, Theos-2, was successfully launched on Monday from the Guiana Space Center, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said.

Mrigadayavan Palace 3-day reopening Oct 13-15

The historic Mrigadayavan Palace in Cha Am will temporarily reopen to the public for three days Oct. 13-15. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024

Yesterday, in Surat Thani province, members of the Turtle Conservation Assn. on Koh Pha Ngan received a report from staff at the Koh Tao Resort, Nai Thon Beach, Koh Tao, that the first baby turtles from Mother Thongdee’s second nest had emerged from their eggs since Monday morning from a total of three nests.

In order to achieve post-election constitutional power, Thailand’s Pheu Thai party finds itself abed with its former enemies allied to the military junta, which seized power in 2014. It may seem a wobbly coalition, but it’s likely to last several years.

Pheu Thai fears that its erstwhile popularity will dip, or perhaps ditch, in a fresh general election. The military-backed parties may face wipe-out as younger Thais, in particular, clearly prefer the radical reformist policies of the Move Forward party now consigned to sit on the opposition benches. The Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) has finished drafting a new operations plan to cope with climate change, the OAE chief said this week.

Chantanon Wannakhejorn, secretary-general of the OAE, which is under the Agriculture Ministry, said the OAE has worked with both state and private agencies in drafting the new plan, adding that the previous plan covering the period 2017-2022 had now expired, so the subcommittee responsible for enforcing policies on climate ambitions for land use and agriculture has been assigned to draw up a new one. Hua Hin now has once-daily bus service to Pattaya, leaving Hua Hin at 9am and departing from Pattaya at 8am. Tickets are 473 THB.
