Change in the tax law does target expats living in Thailand

A former chairman of an international law firm in Bangkok has warned that a new taxation directive issued by the Revenue Department targeting foreign income sources faces a legal challenge and will create more reporting obligations and confusion. The order published on Sept. 15 2altering a 38-year-old interpretation, is a definite step by the government to widen the tax base, meaning more significant reporting requirements, at the very least for expats living in Thailand.

Kitipong Urapeepattanapong, along with other legal experts, including a Supreme Court judge, is calling on the Thai government to overhaul the tax system thoroughly to make it competitive with Hong Kong and Singapore. Continued …

Open to 4am is OK, but alcohol sales are not

The Thai government will initially permit bars and nightclubs in four provinces, including Chonburi, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok, to operate until 4am, as announced by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Friday.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, however, “Every private sector shall follow the laws, especially, the extension of opening service of entertainment districts to 4am, but it does not mean that selling liquor beyond prescribed legal hours: 2am. However, the customers may still be inside the venues, which is good for products and services other than alcohol.” Continued …

The Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment (MNRE) is set to introduce a groundbreaking Clean Air Act to address the escalating air pollution concerns that have gripped the nation.

Police Gen. Phatcharavat Wongsuwan, the environment minister, revealed that a draft of the bill is currently open for public feedback on the ministry’s website until Nov. 13. 2 More Thai Workers Dead, One More Taken Hostage

The Foreign Ministry said this past weekend two more Thai workers had died in the Israel-Hamas war, raising the death toll to 34, while one more was taken hostage, increasing to 24 the number of Thais held captive by Hamas fighters.

Domestic violence surge in Thailand sparks renewed action

A surge in domestic violence cases in Thailand prompted a reminder from authorities that victims are not alone and assistance is readily available. Social Development and Human Security Minister Varawut Silpa-archa emphasized a year-round approach to ending violence, not just during November, which is internationally recognized as the month for ending violence against women, children, and families.

Inflation falls for first time in 25 months

Thailand’s inflation rate fell for the first time in 25 months, thanks to falling energy prices due to government support measures, and lower food prices, the commerce ministry said today.

The consumer price index (CPI) fell 0.31% in October from a year earlier, versus a 0.3% year-on-year rise in the previous month, according to data. The figure compared with a forecast 0.0% for October in a Reuters poll. Continued …

A new round of minimum wage increases for workers will be announced next month “as a New Year’s gift”, Labor Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn said on Sunday.

An American man and a Luxembourgian woman died on the spot in a road accident in Phuket Province, while the female Russian driver was injured.

The incident happened near the Friendship Beach Resort entrance on Wiset Road, on the way to Rawai Beach. Phuket Police officers from Chalong Police Station were notified and contacted a forensic doctor from Vachira Phuket Hospital, as well as staff from the Rawai Municipal Rescue Unit and the Phuket Foundation, to assist with the scene examination. Meet the New Swedish Ambassador to Thailand

H.E. Anna Hammargren, was named the new Swedish ambassador to Thailand, on Oct. 23. Born in Solna, a prime settlement and municipality located just north of Stockholm, she spent all her childhood in nearby Sollentuna, also north of the capital.

In Sollentuna, Hammargren went to school and after finishing high school, she took a break from studying and decided – like many young Swedish women do – to spread her wings and go abroad. 20 Thai Hostages Reported Safe

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said todayyesterday that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had called to inform that 20 out of 23 Thais held hostage by Hamas fighters are safe, while a search is underway for two to three other captives.

Wild ‘elephant migration’ causes a trunk-load of trouble in Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen, a northeastern province in Thailand, is currently experiencing an invasion of wild elephants from the neighboring province of Loei. The elephants, in search of food, have descended from the mountains of Phu Kradueng district, causing widespread destruction in two subdistricts – Boribun and Dong Lan in Si Chomphu district – of the province.

Economy is in troubled waters, with fears for both exports and foreign tourism

Thailand’s economy is facing uncertainty on all fronts as the year draws to a close, with a decline in the projected GDP growth for 2023 to only 2.7% and possibly as low as 2.2% due to concerns not only about the country’s export industry but now also a more sluggish rebound in foreign tourism than predicted, with the Kingdom on target to generate only 61% of the level of income seen in 2019.

Cool season in Thailand delayed and warmer due to El Niño

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) announced that the onset of this year’s cool season is likely to be delayed by approximately two weeks, and will be warmer than usual. The shift has been attributed to unpredictable weather patterns and the influence of the El Niño phenomenon.

No alcohol sales on Sunday

The sale of alcohol will be banned on Sunday to observe the end of Buddhist Lent. The ban begins at midnight Saturday and ends midnight Sunday. Alcohol sales are not allowed at restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels, convenience stores, and supermarkets, although you can still buy at duty-free shops in airports. Violators can be fined up to 10,000 baht, a maximum of six months in jail, or both.

Legal casinos and gambling in Thailand being weighed carefully

Thailand’s leaders are considering plans put forward last year for legalizing gambling and casinos in the Kingdom. In September, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin came out in favor of the move and has promised to bring the matter to cabinet.

By and large, public opinion is hostile to the prospect, as are many experts, given the history of gambling in the country and the social ills it creates. Thai exports amounted to US$46.18 billion between January and July, driven by free trade agreements (FTAs), Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director-general Ronnarong Phoolpipat announced this week. The top five FTAs contributing to this figure were:

Thailand’s customs-based exports unexpectedly increased 2.1% in September from a year earlier, helped by higher shipments of rice and farm products, the commerce ministry said today, despite sluggish global demand.

To celebrate their 7th anniversary, the Hua Hin Ladies (HHL) are seeking donations of rice on Thursday, Oct. 26, with the donations given to Jungle Aid.

Donations should be dropped off at Cheers Restaurant & Bar any time from 9am until closing. Those attending the HHL party that day can bring donations the evening of Oct. 26.

Elderly elephant Nam Chok spent decades being used to give rides to tourists at an elephant trekking camp in Pattaya. Now in her sixties, her owner agreed to send her to a sanctuary for her retirement.

Burmese man shot dead by Thai police in Kui Buri after knife attack

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in the Kui Buri district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province when a 30-year-old Burmese man was shot dead by local police. Bangkok air pollution back to hazardous as PM2.5 season gets underway

Air pollution in Bangkok rose to the “orange” level (starting to affect health) on Tuesday, signalling the start of the so-called PM2.5 season.

Levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 24.3 to 49.8 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) across the city, according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD). Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.
