Foreigners working legally in Thailand now face stricter tax compliance requirements, as the government moves to align its system with international standards. With more than 3.3 million registered foreign workers as of latest data, authorities are stepping up enforcement to ensure all individuals earning income in the country meet their personal income tax obligations.

Under Thai law, any foreigner residing in the country for 180 days or more within a calendar year is considered a tax resident. Non-residents are only taxed on income earned within Thailand. This revelation comes alongside a sharp increase in doctor resignations, forcing the ministry to propose radical reforms for allocating new medical graduates.

Like many of our readers, we have experienced Singapore’s version of street food, which means indoor food courts in office buildings. The costs to vendors are higher due to higher rent, while customers must know where the food courts are, as there usually is no outside signage. Bangkok is known in the tourism world for its street food scene. Closeting vendors in building basements is not street food, and will not resonate the same with international visitors, and, we’re guessing, with Bangkok residents.)

Another Pattaya jumper; American ran out of money

A 70-year-old American man was found dead after jumping from an 11-story condominium in Pattaya early yesterday. Police said he left a handwritten note explaining that he had run out of money.

Kaspersky: Thailand among top targets for web threats

Thailand’s cybersecurity systems remain vulnerable to a high number of attacks, according to cybersecurity firms. Kaspersky said Thailand logged the most incidents in Southeast Asia with 2.52 million web threats in the first half of 2025, followed by Malaysia and Indonesia with 1.70 million and 1.63 million, respectively.

Bank of Thailand aims to quickly unlock frozen accounts

The Bank of Thailand is expediting efforts to unlock the financial transactions of suspended accounts affected by investigations into mules. In collaboration with relevant agencies, the regulator is upgrading its operational processes to better distinguish between mule accounts and legitimate ones, allowing the public to transfer money as usual.

Under the new system, banks will be able to unlock suspended transactions within one day, or as quickly as 3–4 hours per case, compared with the previous 3–7 days. Editor: Patience. The Thai government has limited resources, with all areas of the country clamoring for investment of one kind or another. PKK is just one small piece of the overall equation, and, frankly, other areas could use the money more than this area. And new rolling stock has been purchased, just not for the southern route – yet. (Of course, as the article below illustrates, there always seems to be money for tourism needs.)

Seven killed as Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge collapses on Rama II Road

The under-construction Dao Khanong Expressway Bridge collapsed onto Rama II Road in Bangkok’s Chom Thong district at 1:48 am this morning. Initial reports confirm seven fatalities and many injuries. Authorities are searching for about 30 people believed to be trapped under the debris.

Officials said a concrete beam structure for the new bridge, which is under construction, collapsed onto the existing expressway bridge located about 200 meters from the toll booth. The new bridge is part of the Rama III – Dao Khanong Expressway project. Continued …

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday announced sanctions against officials from Thailand, a U.S. ally, for their role in deporting at least 40 Uyghurs to China, where Washington says the members of the Muslim group will face persecution.

How Often Do Thais Use E-hailing In A Week

E-hailing services are becoming increasingly popular among Thais, with more people relying on them for daily commutes and errands. As urban mobility evolves, Maxim’s analytics team examined user habits in 2024, revealing key insights into ride frequency, preferred services, and spending patterns.

According to the data, 49% of active users book rides twice a week, while 39% use the service once a week. Meanwhile, 10% book between three to six rides weekly, and a small but dedicated 1% use Maxim more than seven times a week. Most rides originate from public spaces, transportation hubs, and workplaces, heading toward residential areas. Regular users often commute across various parts of the city.

Among service options, the car service is used for 53% of rides, making it the most popular. Motorbikes make up 41% of trips because their speed and flexibility make them suited for short journeys in cities. While the remaining 5% consists of other services.

According to the data, 59% spend up to Bt50 per week, 36% spend up to Bt250, and only 13% exceed that amount. On average, users spend approximately Bt108 per week.

Thai economy improved in January, says central bank
