The Pheu Thai Party has announced that it will nominate Paetongtarn Shinawatra as its candidate for prime minister to succeed Srettha Thavisin, who was removed from office by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday.

Initially, a meeting of government whips at Thaksin’s residence had agreed to nominate Chaikasem Nitisiri, 76, as their candidate. However, a meeting of Pheu Thai MPs today decided to nominate Paetongtarn instead. Continued …

With another controversial ruling, Thailand’s Constitutional Court has once again returned the country to a new era of political stasis and uncertainty. On Wednesday, the court voted 5-4 to dismiss Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office for a minor “ethical violation,” relating to the appointment to his cabinet of an official who had previously served a prison sentence for bribing a court official.

The Constitutional Court’s decision is just the latest in a long line of significant interventions in Thai politics, and came a week after another ruling that disbanded the Move Forward Party, the largest party in the Thai parliament, and banned 11 of its executives from politics for 10 years. 10 Northeast provinces at risk of severe drought in next 10 years

Ten provinces in Thailand’s northeastern region are likely to experience severe drought over the next decade, according to drought trends forecast by the Climate Change and Environmental Department on Wednesday. The forecast was based on two climate model scenarios: one assuming moderate greenhouse gas emissions and one with high emissions.

The moderate emissions scenario assumes greenhouse gas emissions in 2100 will be close to current levels, potentially raising the global average surface temperature by about 2.7 degrees Celsius between 2081 and 2100. Thai-Chinese high-speed railway 36% behind schedule

The first phase of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway running from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima province is currently 71.4% complete, but around 36.4% behind its scheduled opening in 2028, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) reported on Thursday.

A woman experienced a terrifying ordeal when the lift she was using at her condo in Bangkok suddenly plummeted from the 32nd floor and stopped at the 15th floor, leaving her shaken.

Thailand halves number of teen mothers, sets more ambitious goal

Through extensive campaigns on sexual well-being at the community level over the past decade, Thailand has successfully brought down the number of teenage mothers (aged 15-19) by half, the Public Health Ministry has announced, as it embarks on a more ambitious goal.

Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said on Wednesday that births in women aged 15-19 years in 2023 was 21 cases per 1,000 female population in this age group, down from 53.4 cases per 1,000 female population recorded in 2012. Continued …

Thai unemployment drops, except in Bangkok

Thailand’s overall unemployment rate dropped from May to June, except in Bangkok, according to a new survey conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

Institute predicts 8.8% jump in food exports to Bt1.6 trillion

The value of Thailand’s food exports is expected to increase by 8.8% year-on-year to 1.6 trillion baht this year, driven by growing global demand and a decrease in the prices of raw materials, says the National Food Institute (NFI).

“Raw materials such as tuna, sugar, soybeans, and wheat have seen a decrease in price, which benefits the food processing industry,” said Supawan Teerarat, president of the NFI. Continued …

Thai industrial sentiment rises for first time in 4 months

Thailand’s industrial sentiment index rose for the first time in four months in July due to higher domestic demand, budget spending and tourism, the Federation of Thai Industries(FTI) said today.

A group of U.S. solar panel makers led by First Solar and Hanwha Qcells asked the U.S. Department of Commerce on Thursday to consider imposing duties retroactively on imported panels and cells amid a surge of products from Vietnam and Thailand.

The U.S. government already has launched a trade case over solar products made in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia, which poses the risk of anti-dumping and countervailing duties, and the new filing raises the prospect of duties being imposed even before a final decision in the case. Haier, the Chinese consumer electronics and home appliance company, has invested 10 billion baht to set up its first air-conditioner manufacturing plant in Thailand to tap the rapid growth of the air-conditioner market in Thailand worth more than 1 billion baht.

Thailand was plunged into crisis on Wednesday afternoon when the Constitutional Court removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. In effect, the move also collapsed the current coalition government.

Baht appreciates to below 35 per dollar

The baht appreciated to below 35 per U.S. dollar, driven by a weakening greenback as the market expects a Federal Reserve rate cut following the release of recent U.S. economic data. On Wednesday the baht opened at 35.03 per dollar, strengthening from Tuesday’s close of 35.16.

Heavy overnight downpours resulted in runoffs downstream of Mae Sai River, causing it to break its banks early on Wednesday and flood border towns in Chiang Rai and Myanmar.

Thailand awaits court verdict that may topple PM Srettha

A Thai court will this week decide if the Southeast Asian nation will continue business as usual or be tipped into a renewed period of political uncertainty, when it assesses whether tycoon Srettha Thavisin should continue as prime minister.

The Constitutional Court will rule on whether Srettha violated “ethical standards” by appointing to Cabinet former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who was jailed for contempt of court following a bribery attempt. Heavy rain warning for three Thai regions

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a warning for heavy rain in three regions, with the northern region expected to face 70% rainfall. Bangkok will experience heavy showers from afternoon to evening.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 30% of the area will experience thunderstorms, mainly in Phetchaburi, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. Tax gain from casino legalization ‘not worth it’

Several parties have criticized the government’s proposed bill to allow casinos to operate legally within entertainment complexes in the country, saying that tax revenue gained from casinos would not be worth the ensuing social problems.

A source from the Finance Ministry said this week that the draft of the Entertainment Complex Act is in the final stretch and set to undergo a public hearing this month. The draft stipulates that entertainment complex operators must register as a company in Thailand with registered capital of at least 10 billion baht. The southern dual-track route from Nakhon Pathom to Chumphon covering 421 kilometers was opened to passengers on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said.

Ministries get tough on hazardous waste

The current global trend of social change toward an aging society is becoming more evident. According to the United Nations’ World Population 2022 report, the global population is projected to reach 8 billion, with 10% being over the age of 65. Rice farmers to sue if water is drained into their rice fields

Rice farmers in the Sena district of Ayutthaya province are threatening to sue the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) for compensation if the department drains excess water into their rice fields before Sept. 15, flooding their unharvested crops.

Pradab Kongpramoon, a farmer in Ban Krathum in Sena district, said that there are more than 22,400 hectares of rice fields, with only some having been harvested. Of his own 8 hectares, he said his rice plants are about 90-days old and can be harvested in the next 30 days, adding that water from a nearby canal is already flooding his field. Continued …

Thousands of Blackchin tilapia wash up on Phetchaburi beach

Fishermen in Bang Kaeo subdistrict of Phetchaburi province have each reaped a harvest of over 100kg of Blackchin tilapia fish, which washed ashore on Bang Kaeo Beach this morning. Fishermen told the media that they had never seen so many Blackchin tilapia being washed ashore, although they had seen them at sea.

Cross-border trade sees positive trend

The value of Thailand’s cross-border and transit trade in the first six months of the year stood at over 912 billion baht, an increase of 3.6% on the same period last year, which the government attributed to the increased promotion of cross-border trade over the past several months.

Citing figures released by the Department of Foreign Trade, government spokesman Chai Wacharonke said that during the past six months, the country’s cross-border trade and transit trade – defined as trade with third countries that take place via Thailand’s border checkpoints – was valued at 912.28 billion baht. Big jump in Phuket’s August tourist arrivals

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was informed by the Airports of Thailand (AOT) that 20 to 30 flights are landing in Phuket every day in August, with this being over 100% increase from last year and the trend continuing during the high season.

Srettha used his vacation in Phuket to call a meeting of tourism agencies to prepare for the high season, including representatives from National Police headquarters, Region 8 Police, Phuket provincial police, tourist and marine police, plus the Navy, Provincial Gov. Effort to reduce energy subsidies wins backing

Tax authorities and energy advocates support the Oil Fuel Fund Office’s (OFFO) initiative to better manage the loss-ridden Oil Fuel Fund, with its universal diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) price subsidy programs likely to end, according to a public hearing on the 2019 OFFO Act.

A substantial sum from the fund is being spent to help households and businesses, with no clear criteria to determine who really needs subsidies, said participants in the hearing co-organized by OFFO and Thammasat University. Participants support OFFO’s plans to spend money more carefully after Pornchai Jirakulpisan, head of the policy and strategy department at OFFO, said earlier the office is considering helping only specific groups of people to avoid incurring huge debts. PTT Station cuts petrol and gasohol prices by 30 satang per liter

PTT Station announced a reduction in retail fuel prices, effective from 5am tomorrow. Petrol and all types of gasohol will drop by 30 satang per liter, with diesel prices remaining unchanged.

The cut means petrol will now be priced at 44.94 baht per liter. Gasohol 95 will be 37.05 baht per liter, Gasohol 91 at 36.68 baht per liter, E20 at 34.94 baht per liter, and E85 at 34.69 baht per liter. Premium Gasohol 95 will be available at 45.64 baht per liter. Continued …

Thailand is set to experience heavy rainfall despite hot daytime temperatures, with 33 provinces expected to face severe weather conditions, including heavy rain. The Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts increased rain from today, Aug. 10 to 12, especially in four regions.

Weather office says La Nina already under way

The La Nina climate pattern has begun affecting local weather, according to the Thai Meteorological Department. Although there is heavy rainfall in some areas, officials say water volume in the reservoirs of major dams may not be sufficient to meet requirements during the dry season that runs from November to April.

Thailand’s Department of Rural Roads is planning to use a revolutionary asphalt grade for repairs to the road connecting Muang District with Nakhon Ratchasima Airport. Recycled plastic waste will be used in the asphalt mix for the 3km road stretch. Work on the section of Highway No 3140 will commence in the third quarter of 2024 and continue until the third quarter of 2025.

This is the first time the use of plastic waste in an asphalt mix will have been trialled in Thailand and its use on a busy stretch of road handling high traffic volumes is highly innovative. Team Mitsubishi To Compete in Asia Cross Country Rally in Hua Hin

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will be taking on the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2024 scheduled for Aug. 11 to 17. In this competition, which will be held in southern and central Thailand, the team will be driving four Triton1 pickup trucks, aiming to reclaim the title after two years.

A total of 67 vehicles will compete in this year’s AXCR – 46 in the auto category, 19 in the moto category, and 2 in the sidecar category. The rally proper begins with Leg 1 on Aug. 12. Leg 2 is the longest section of the competition, traveling from Surat Thani to Hua Hin, and is expected to be challenging, with large ruts and rock debris on the road surface. Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. Continued …

New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe.
