Thailand’s Press Freedom Under Threat
It was disappointing to see that Thai PBS decided to take down its interview with Taiwan’s foreign minister, Joseph Wu, due to comments from the Chinese embassy in Bangkok. However, it is understandable given that they are government-run.
Still, the government should not dance to every tune played by the Chinese government. Thailand is not one of China’s provinces, and the government needs to stop treating the country as such merely for economic gains from China’s investments and tourists. Continued …
Officials Propose To Ban All Thais Fom Carrying Guns
Despite the government’s efforts to take strict measures to control gun violence following the shooting of a 17-year-old at Paragon in October, there have been at least two other incidents in Bangkok recently.
The first incident occurred on Saturday, when a group of teenagers were involved in a shootout in which Maria Sirada Sinprasert, also known as “Teacher Jeab” who teaches computer skills at Sacred Heart Convent School, was accidentally shot. She was shot in front of TMB Thanachart Bank, Khlong Toey Branch, Sunthorn Kesa Road. She later died in hospital. Continued …

Chiang Rai will have a new rail route winding past lush mountains, beautiful bridges, tunnels and even breaking through the morning mist. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT)’s Gov. Nirut Maneephan said this will probably be the most romantic route in Thailand.
The 323-kilometer-long railway is set to run through four provinces in the north of Thailand – Phrae, Lampang, Phayao and Chiang Rai – and will have 26 stations. Continued …
Veganism bites back during November
World Vegan Day falls on Nov. 1 each year, and this entire month is dedicated to veganism.

Food of the Future: ‘Grasshoppers Are More Valuable than Caviar’
Srisuphun Srikhot tucks a bunch of banana leaves under her arm in the village of Ban Hai in eastern Thailand and throws it into the enclosure with the grasshoppers. They’re always hungry, the farmer’s wife says, as she adds a handful of Napier grass to provide the nutrients the animals need to grow quickly.
The grasshoppers are just 35 days old, but they are already quite fat and measure one and a half times the length of a thumb. They’re packed together in two enclosures attached to bamboo poles, each about three square meters (32 square feet) in size. Continued …

Government economic policy clashes with Bank of Thailand’s efforts to rein in debt
The danger of a credit downgrade for Thailand is growing, as private sector debt continues to creep up, and even with interest rates at only 2.5%, the effects on the economy are already significant, with the property market down by over 14%, with up to 20% fewer properties sold.
The rift between the Thai government and the Bank of Thailand continues to widen as the country’s economy treads water, with a prospect of a possible credit downgrade driven by elevated public and private sector debt levels and the absence of direction. Continued …

The government’s digital money handout will not be implemented until the legal process for the project has been finalized, says Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.
“We will not start the project until the legal process is complete. It may be postponed if someone submits a petition to the Constitutional Court to rule against the loan act funding the project,” Julapun said Monday. Continued …

Tourism authorities eye 60-day visa exemption for Europeans
The Tourism and Sports Ministry is planning to propose to the Cabinet that the visa exemption period for visitors from over 50 countries be extended from 30 days to 60 days.
The measure would help further boost the tourism industry on top of the visa-free policy currently granted to visitors from China and Kazakhstan for five months, or until February 2024, minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol said on Monday. Continued …
Little impact from extending stays, say hoteliers
Extending the length of stay for all markets enjoying visa exemptions may not create much impact except for long-haul markets, while the government might have to hike costs to look after foreign tourists, say hoteliers.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) proposed extending the length of stay for 56 nationalities eligible for 30-day stays. Continued …

Cooperation between Thai and Chinese police is necessary to help restore confidence in tourists’ safety, says the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), with tour operators hoping the scheme will help reduce illegal Chinese businesses.
The government proposal to invite Chinese police to Thailand has stirred public discussion this week, as some people raised concerns about allowing them to patrol alongside local police. Continued …
Phuket continues to bank on the ‘Russian revolution’
Phuket is experiencing a significant transformation due to an influx of Russian tourists, driving up property prices and sparking local resentment. While Western countries impose sanctions on Russia, Thailand continues to welcome Russian visitors in an effort to revive its tourism industry post-COVID.
The Thai government has even extended Russian tourist visas from 30 to 90 days, resulting in almost half a million Russians arriving in Phuket in the first half of the year. Over 9,000 have been granted long-stay visas. Continued …
