Electricity rise capped at 4.20 baht per unit from January

The new electricity rate will not exceed 4.20 baht per unit when adjusted in January next year, the Energy Ministry said on Friday.

The announcement came after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Wednesday set the fuel tariff (FT) for January to April at 4.68 baht per unit, a rise of 0.69 baht. However, the ministry said 4.68 baht per unit was just the ERC’s suggested rate. Continued …

Thai economy still in recovery phase, BOT says

The Thai economy remained on the path to recovery during the last quarter of this year, the Bank of Thailand (BOT) announced, explaining that a steady recovery had been observed in October and November, driven mainly by private consumption and tourism.

The main driving force is domestic demand, including private consumption and private sector investments, the BOT’’s Assistant Governor of Corporate Relations Chayawadee Chaianan said, noting that the service sector had slowed due to the decrease in the number of Thai and foreign tourists. BoT puts last quarter GDP growth at 3.7%

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) predicts gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 3.7% in the final quarter this year, attributed to the low-base effect amid a continued recovery driven by private consumption and tourism. The central bank forecasts 2023 GDP growth of 2.4%.

The high growth outlook for the last quarter is the result of a low-base effect year-on-year, said Chayawadee Chai-anant, assistant governor of the corporate relations group at the BoT. Continued …

Energy Commission lambasted over electricity price increase

The Federation of Thai Industries has roundly criticized the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for behaving like the only agency responsible for setting national electricity prices every four months, based on the data and assumptions provided by oil companies, without any plan for structural reform to reduce power prices.

The comment was made by FTI Vice President Isares Rattanadilok Na Phuket today, in response to the ERC’s decision yesterday to increase the price of electricity, for the January-April 2024 period, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht per unit, or 17%. Continued …

Google, Microsoft and Tesla said not after electricity price cuts

Government spokesman Chai Watcharong on Thursday clarified news reports that have distorted the truth by suggesting that Google, Microsoft, and Tesla wanted the government to reduce electricity prices before deciding to invest in Thailand. He explained that the three U.S. giants are seeking clean energy and green electricity, not price cuts.

Thailand’s Sovereign Credit Rating Stays at ‘BBB+’

S&P Global Ratings (S&P) has maintained Thailand’s Sovereign Credit Rating at “BBB+” with stable outlook in view of the country’s sustained economic recovery and fiscal stability, disclosed government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke.

Price of exported Thai rice reaches 17-year high

Rice exports from January to October 2023 increased by 11.4% to 6,922,649 tons, with a total value of 136,289.8 million baht, a surge of 24.6% compared to the same period last year.

These figures signify a positive trend in Thai rice exports, prominently influencing paddy rice prices, said Pramote Chareonsilp, president of the Thai Agriculturist Assn., adding that in the past week, various Thai rice types have seen a price increase. Price of electricity from January-April to rise

The Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand has set new electricity charges, ranging from 4.68 baht to 5.95 baht/unit from January until April, 2024. The price from September until December this year has been 3.99 baht/unit.

The commission approved an 89.55 satang/unit fuel tariff (FT) for the January-April period, which will raise the price of electricity to an average of 69.07 satang/unit. When adding in the power base rate of 3.78 baht/unit, the new price of electricity will average 4.68 baht/unit, excluding VAT. Continued …

Fire at a Hua Hin university causes Bt3M in damage

A fire ripped through a building of a university in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district yesterday afternoon, destroying computers and other property.

Education Ministry assigned to take urgent steps to improve Thais’ English proficiency

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the Education Ministry to come up with measures rapidly to improve English proficiency among Thai people, students in particular, after Thailand’s very poor ranking on the global Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index 2023.

EF ranks 113 countries, where English is not the first language, based on scores in 2.2 million Education First standardized English tests taken in 2022. At the top of the list is the Netherlands, with an average score of 647 out of 800, followed by Singapore (631), while Denmark, scoring 615, and Norway, with 614, swapped places at fourth and fifth place. Finnish authorities have wrapped up an investigation into a human trafficking and bribery scandal. The case involves Thai berry pickers who worked in Finland from 2020 to 2022.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) suspects five individuals linked to berry companies for aggravated human trafficking. GDP Forecast To Rise 3.8%, Partly Due To Digital Wallet Campaign

Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) is forecast to rise 3.8% next year, partly due to the Pheu Thai-initiated digital wallet campaign, the Bank of Thailand’s Assistant Gov. Piti Disyatat said Wednesday.

Prachuap Khiri Khan records lowest English proficiency in Thailand

In the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) reported yesterday, Thailand’s grasp of the English language has been categorized as “very low proficiency,” ranking 101st out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries.

Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded the lowest score of the Thai provinces included in the survey. With a score of just 299, Prachuap Khiri Khan’s proficiency level is markedly lower than other provinces, such as Chiang Mai, which top-scored with 464, followed by Bangkok (457), Phuket (456), and Songkhla (437). – HHT

Thai investigators crack down on Makro for shady swine supplies

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) raided Makro, a popular cash-and-carry store warehouse in Thailand after discovering the store ordered illegal pork products from a company previously indicted for illicit imports.

DSI Director Suriya Singhakamon said officers conducted a raid on Wealthy & Healthy Foods, which illegally imported pork into Thailand, and discovered that the company supplied some frozen pork and pork livers to a cash-and-carry store called Siam Makro. Continued …

Lantern blamed for burning Chiang Mai market

A fire broke out at nine buildings within Rim Ping Flower Market in the northern province of Chiang Mai at 3am yesterday. A witness claimed the blaze was triggered when a lantern from the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Lantern Festival fell onto the buildings.

According to initial investigations, approximately 1,400 square meters were affected, including nine buildings in the market and some parts of nearby buildings. These include residential buildings, a Chinese shrine and the Thailand Post Museum. Continued …

As many as 639,828 krathongs were floated on Bangkok’s myriad canals for Loy Krathong this year, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday.

Doubts over Thai target of 8.2 million Chinese visitors in 2024

Analysts have expressed doubts over the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) ambitious target of attracting 8.2 million Chinese visitors next year. This comes as predictions for overall foreign arrivals next year have been down-scaled, amid concerns over a sluggish global economy.

Kasem Prunratanamala, who leads research at CGS-CIMB Securities in Thailand, stated that while the firm has kept its estimation of 27 million arrivals for this year, the prediction for next year has been reduced from 36 million to 32 million. Issara United, a joint venture between SET-listed developer Charn Issara Development and Thai conglomerate Saha Group, will launch a new condo project in Hua Hin worth 1.7 billion baht to capitalize on the robust demand for vacation homes.

Thailand’s exports expected to contract this year

The Thai National Shippers’ Council has predicted that Thailand’s exports this year would contract 1.5% year-on-year.

Council chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said although Thailand’s exports had started to see a brighter trend, its growth would remain negative because of the contraction earlier in the year. Nearly 130 companies in Thailand that violated labor rights have been blacklisted, while six Myanmar companies sending workers to Thailand have had their licenses revoked temporarily, according to the Ministry of Labor.

Long boat racing returns to Kao Tao this weekend

Khao Tao Reservoir will host the 16th edition of “Long Boat Racing for River Masters” today through Sunday. Participants from all over Thailand are expected to compete across four boat categories.

The event will feature traditional Lao vessels, ancient long boats, Naga head long boats from Nan province, and iron long boats from Buriram.

Thai-Danish beauty queen Anntonia Porsild looked stunning in an eye-catching national costume as she competed in the 72nd Miss Universe 2023 pageant being held in San Salvador, El Salvador. The national costume for this year is called “Ayutthaya Kingdom’s Goddess”, and was inspired by the statue of Phra Mae Thorani, the earth deity in Buddhist mythology. Thais believe Phra Mae Thorani brings prosperity to the land and dispels evil. Anntonia, 26, was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2023 in August and has gone on to represent Thailand in the international pageant this week, competing against representatives from over 80 countries.
