For weeks now, most of the friends and families I know have had a cough of some kind. The pollution in the dry season in Thailand has long been a problem. But recently, it’s reached dangerous and deeply worrying levels.

Bangkok was the fourth most polluted city in the world this month. Across 31 districts 352 schools were also closed because of pollution. Colder weather forecast for most of Thailand until Monday

The Thai Meteorological Department today forecast a decrease in temperature by 3-5 degrees Celsius in the northeast and by 2-4°C in the remaining regions except for the lower south from today to Monday. The condition is created by another moderate high-pressure system from China that extends to upper Thailand and the South China Sea.

Thai police have seized cash and other assets worth more than 100 million baht and arrested 10 suspects linked to a major online gambling network that had over one billion baht in turnover.

Government’s economic stimulus projected to drive 3.5% growth in Thai economy

Thailand needs structural reforms to boost GDP: economist

Thailand needs to initiate structural reform across its economy to accelerate the expansion of its gross domestic product (GDP) to over 3% per annum, Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group (KKP) said on Thursday.

Japanese businesses lead 79% surge in foreign investment in 2024

Thailand witnessed a 79% year-on-year surge in foreign investment in 2024, attracting a substantial 228 billion baht, the Commerce Ministry said yesterday. Japanese businesses were the biggest investors, accounting for more than half with over 121 billion baht.

Thailand’s energy use rises as tourism powers up

The Department of Energy Business revealed fuel consumption in Thailand saw a 2.1% rise last year, reaching a daily average of 155.4 million liters, in tandem with an estimated GDP growth of 2.6%-2.7%, largely fuelld by bustling tourism-related industries.

American and Thai wife lose 15.2 million baht in Hua Hin property fraud

An American man and his Thai wife are pursuing justice after being duped by a real estate firm into buying two plots of land and a house in Hua Hin, amounting to 15.2 million baht. Despite their investment, they have been unable to gain ownership of the property.

Patrick Flippin revealed that he first arrived in Thailand in 2005. He worked and lived in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok for five years before marrying Vipavanee Kaewmueangklang in 2017. He later returned to the United States for work, intending to retire in Thailand with Vipavanee. Bangkok residents suffered yesterday, with smog levels at red hazardous-to-health levels, and unsafe levels of ultrafine dust recorded in 15 of the 76 provinces, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

Thailand’s power supply cuts to Myanmar affecting people, hospitals and schools

Thailand’s electricity supply withdrawal from the Tachileik border township in Myanmar is expected to affect about 7,500 homes, five hospitals, 45 schools, 65 temples and 15 army camps, said Natkhanet Charasveesirikul, manager of Provincial Electricity Authority’s (PEA) Mae Sai office.

He said that there are about 200 emergency patients in hospitals there who depend on ventilators, and it will take at least three days for Myanmar’s engineers to source an alternative supply from Laos. Continued …

Thailand reports 1.3% inflation in January

The headline consumer price index (CPI) in Thailand rose 1.32% in January from a year earlier, after an increase of 1.2% the month before, the Ministry of Commerce said today.

The figure was in line with a forecast rise of 1.3% in a Reuters poll and was inside the Bank of Thailand’s target range of 1% to 3% for the second consecutive month. Core CPI was up 0.83% in January from a year earlier. Continued …

Study: Biomass Burning Fuels North Thailand PM2.5 Issues

A study conducted under the ASIA-AQ project has found that most of the PM2.5 pollution affecting northern Thailand is due to biomass burning. Hua Hin hotels’ occupancy rate up 7.7% in 2024

Thailand’s luxury hotels experienced strong growth in average daily rates (ADR) throughout 2024, increasing by 5.3% year-on-year and 42.7% compared to 2019, according to STR, a global leader in hotel industry research.

Occupancy rates in seven of Thailand’s tourist cities showed steady growth throughout last year, signaling the continued recovery of the Thai hotel industry. STR reported that Chiang Mai experienced the largest year-on–year occupancy increase, at 15.1%, followed by Krabi (13.2%), Samui (11.9%), Hua Hin (7.7%), Bangkok (6.5%), Pattaya (4.7%) and Phuket (4.4%). All 50 districts of Bangkok are affected by PM2.5 dust exceeding the 37.5µg/m³ (micron) safe level. The average is 60.2µg/m³, which is categorized as “Orange” (unhealthy for sensitive groups), according to the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt has announced a campaign to eliminate burning in rice fields to tackle air pollution caused by fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Thai factory output misses forecast as car output slumps

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped by a more than expected 2.1% in December from a year earlier, due to a slump in the automotive industry and weak consumption, the Industry Ministry reported yesterday.

Yesterday, the Sam Roi Yot Police Station received a report of a collision involving a tourist van and a palm oil truck. The incident occurred on the northbound side of Phetkasem Road at kilometer marker 253+600 in Ban Nong Khang, Moo 9, Sila Loi subdistrict, Sam Roi Yot district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

PM2.5 air pollution could cause an economic impact of 3 to 6 billion baht in Bangkok and surrounding areas if it persists for a month, the Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) said yesterday. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter, with prolonged exposure linked to chronic health issues such as lung and heart disease.

Bangkok today was ranked as the fourth worst city in the world for air quality, according to the latest data from Swiss-based IQAir, as toxic haze continues to affect the capital and other provinces in the country. The air quality index in Bangkok reached 188 as of 9.40am.

Legal amendment on adultery in Thailand enforceable from Jan 22

An adultery law, under which a married person can sue for divorce from their spouse and demand compensation from them if they are found to have had sexual intercourse with a third party, came into force on Jan. 22.

Thailand launches green tariff

Thailand has started imposing the utility green tariff (UGT) for the first time, requiring companies to pay 4.21 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit) if they opt to use renewable power.

The UGT, which is 0.06 baht higher than the power tariff of 4.15 baht a unit, targets businesses implementing campaigns to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and is not related to households, said Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). Continued …

Ultrafine dust levels were in the red (hazardous-to-health) in 46 out of the 76 provinces and in greater Bangkok this morning, with only 10 provinces reporting moderate to good air quality.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTFA) reported at 8am that particulate matter 2.5 micrometrs and less in diameter (PM2.5) was at red levels in 46 provinces and at orange (starting to affect health) levels in 21 provinces. Over 1 million people have been treated for health conditions linked to PM2.5 air pollution in the past fiscal year (October 2023-December 2024), costing the country around 3 billion baht in healthcare expenses, the Public Health Ministry reported on Monday.

A total of 1,048,015 people sought treatment for six PM2.5-related conditions over the 12 months, ranked as follows: Dermatitis (442,073 patients), conjunctivitis (357,104), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (226,423), asthma (18,336), acute coronary syndrome (4,051), and diseases from direct contact with air pollution (28). Cambodian authorities successfully rescued a man who was kidnapped in Thailand, drugged, and transported to Cambodia, where he was held captive. At the same time, his captors attempted to extort a ransom from his family.

Thai cabinet approves carbon tax

The cabinet yesterday agreed to levy a carbon tax of 200 baht per ton of carbon emissions as part of the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul. The tax, however, will be included in the existing oil tax and will not affect the retail price of oil and oil products, Paopoom said.

256 tons of electronic waste seized from Laem Chabang Port

The Customs Department has seized over 256 tons of electronic waste smuggled from Japan and Hong Kong via Laem Chabang Port, department spokesperson Panthong Loykulnanta told a press conference.

Expats in Thailand warned of scams targeting bank accounts

A chief of police issued a warning to retirees in Thailand after two British expats in Pattaya were targetted by scammers attempting to drain their bank accounts. Police Lt. Col. Saksit Choobunrueang yesterday, announced that the elderly are being targetted by scam gangs because of their limited knowledge of technology.

The retirees, both residents of Thailand, received separate phone calls from the fraudsters claiming they might not need to register for a TIN (tax identification number), provided some routine checks confirmed their exemption. Continued …

Air pollution hazardous or moderately dangerous to health was detected in 58 out of 77 provinces across Thailand this morning.

Air pollution soars in Thai capital again, surpassing safety standards

Bangkok was ranked ninth among countries with the poorest air quality worldwide today. The capital’s air quality index surged to 163 as of 9am, higher than the safe standard of 0-50, according to the IQAir website.

Upper Thailand to get colder, heavy rain forecast for south

Another strong high-pressure system from China will extend to Thailand and the South China Sea from Friday to Monday, causing a decrease in temperature and strong winds in the area, the Thai Meteorological Department said in a weather warning today.
