Two videos of Thailand’s ‘floating train’

Railway adventures are gaining popularity in the kingdom, with tourists seeking off-the-beaten-track travel experiences away from the hordes visiting temples and beaches. Saturday was the State Railway of Thailand’s first Bangkok to Pasak Jolasid Dam service “Rot Fai Loi Nam” marking the end of the rainy season. Hundreds of bleary-eyed passengers boarded the train at Bangkok’s century-old Hua Lamphong Station before sunrise.

Lotus ponds, jungles, temples and rice paddies zipped by as tourists in third class hung out the window and took pictures while enjoying the natural air conditioning. Three and a half hours after chugging out of Bangkok, the refurbished Japanese train pulling more than a dozen carriages crossed the Pasak Jolasid reservoir over a series of viaducts and stopped for 20 minutes of selfie time. For most of the year, cattle graze underneath the bridge, but from October to January, the water is high on both sides, which gives the impression that the train is floating on water. Thailand’s forgotten palace

From the vantage point of the 21st century, the tumultuous and transitional Thon Buri period (1767-82) in Thailand’s history seems to be eclipsed by both the lost splendor of ancient Ayutthaya and the palpable grandeur of the ensuing Rattanakosin period.

The latter’s quintessence, embodied to this day in the sumptuous monumentality of the Grand Palace, mesmerizes millions of visitors annually. Nevertheless, those momentous 15 years between the devastating fall of Ayutthaya and the founding of the Chakri dynasty were crucial for paving the way toward modern Thailand. Continued …

Who Really Owns a River?

Rivers are gifts of nature. Rivers have given rise to civilizations, and those civilizations depend upon their rivers and the accompanying ecosystems for their livelihoods: for water, food, bathing, community, and the benefits of the surrounding environment.

But I must convey to you the atrocities that have been committed against our beautiful natural world by the human drive for development. Natural resources and the environment have been transformed into currency. Rivers, forests, and the air have been altered and destroyed without recognizing their true value. Increasingly, rivers are “owned” by those who can extract the greatest commercial value for themselves. Continued …

As Phuket tourism market recovers, traffic infrastructure crisis looms

Phuket hotels experienced promising momentum for the first half of 2023, which has set an optimistic path for the remainder of the year. At the mid-year juncture, international and domestic flight volume was already up 75% over total flights in 2022.

How wild elephants solve puzzles may help humans resolve wildlife conflicts

Opening doors may not seem that hard, but when you have a trunk instead of hands, things can get complicated. Researchers tested the problem-solving skills of wild elephants for the first time by tasking the jumbos with doing just that.

Elephants are brainy. An adult elephant’s brain weighs 5 kilograms (11 pounds), the largest of any terrestrial animal (and three times the size of the human brain). There is also concern that the move may send the wrong signal as the new government seeks to broaden the country’s investor appeal and base and become a “good” global player. Continued …

An Eater’s Guide to Phuket, Thailand’s Island Hotspot

Phuket is one of the biggest travel destinations in the world. In 2022, 9 million tourists visited Thailand’s largest island (down from 15 million in 2018) in search of white-sand beaches, clear waters, and palm trees. Most visitors beeline for resorts and hotels that ring the coastline, which do deliver the goods for beachgoers.

The hitch is that the most popular tourist areas generally lag behind in terms of food. Seek out a meal on a major beach on Phuket, such as Patong, and it’s easier to find borscht, a burrito, or a burger than a well-executed Thai curry. Eat at your hotel or resort, and you’re most likely getting a toned-down, overpriced take on Bangkok-style Thai food. southern Thailand’s bold, colorful, delicious cuisine is almost entirely neglected in these spaces.
