Bank of Thailand promises fix after accounts frozen without warning

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has pledged to tighten its procedures for freezing and unfreezing suspected bank accounts after technical issues and police instructions led to several customers’ balances being displayed as negative. The central bank said the problems caused confusion and distress for affected individuals, but measures are being introduced to prevent a recurrence.

According to Daranee Saeju, assistant governor overseeing the Payment Systems Policy and Financial Consumer Protection Group, the central bank identified two separate causes behind the incidents. The first occurred on Sept. 1 when some banks failed to update end-of-day transactions, leaving accounts showing outdated balances. More bank accounts may be frozen: Bank of Thailand

More people could face frozen bank accounts as authorities widen investigations into transfers linked to mule accounts, in an effort to recover money for scam victims, the Bank of Thailand (BoT) has warned.

Daranee Saeju, BoT assistant governor in charge of consumer protection, said on Saturday that numerous accounts had already been frozen as the Anti-Online Scam Operation Center (AOC), together with commercial banks, intensified operations to trace and return stolen funds. Continued …

The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry has opened a special “war room” to urgently address complaints over frozen bank accounts, after a surge of reports from online vendors and individuals who found their funds locked due to suspected links with so-called “mule accounts.”

The move came after the Bank of Thailand (BoT), commercial banks, and law enforcement agencies held urgent talks yesterday to address growing public concern over the temporary suspension of the accounts. “Mule accounts” are often opened by unknowing parties to receive transfers from victims of financial fraud. Ombudsman Songsak Saicheua said that while Thailand’s existing laws prohibit foreign nationals from owning land and restrict foreign control of certain businesses, some have found ways to circumvent the rules. Common methods include marrying Thai citizens, setting up companies with nominal Thai shareholders while foreigners manage operations, or using other intermediaries to mask actual ownership. Plans for mixed-use activity area at Hua Hin’s Queen’s Park

Hua Hin City Municipality is moving forward with plans to turn 19 rai of land at Suan Luang Queen’s Park into a mixed-use activity area, though officials say more legal clarity is still required before development can proceed.

On Friday, Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul chaired a meeting at Hua Hin City Municipality to follow up on the request to use the land, which falls under the Forest Resource Management office. Heavy rains forecast in Bangkok and 41 provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather forecast warning for today, where heavy rains are expected in 41 provinces, including Bangkok and its metropolitan areas, with a 70% chance of downpours.

The southern region (eastern coast) will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rains in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Most Thais expect Anutin’s minority govt to survive no more than four months

Most Thai voters believe the minority government of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will last no more than four months, according to an opinion survey.

One-month clearance finds 349 landmines near Cambodian border

Col. Siwa Whang-akat, spokesman for the Thailand Mine Action Center (TMAC), yesterday released results of clearance operations supporting the 2nd Army Area in Phu Makua, Chong An Ma and Chong Bok, following the ceasefire declaration with Cambodia.

He said patrols have been conducted continuously, with nine demining teams deployed in Phase 1 from Aug. 10–23. During this period, teams successfully cleared 122 anti-personnel mines, four anti-vehicle mines, 50 unexploded ordnance items, and 1,575 abandoned explosive devices. Continued …

Thailand’s logistics sector draws 2.5-billion baht in foreign investment

According to the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) , Thailand’s logistics sector currently comprises 46,570 registered companies. In July, 327 new firms were established, down 2.1% year-on-year, while 69 firms closed, a 14.8% decrease from the same period last year.

The most notable area of growth was transportation and cargo/passenger handling services, which accounted for 194 of the newly established firms, representing the largest share of new logistics businesses. This segment recorded a year-on-year growth rate of 38.6%. Continued …

Thailand raises compensation for flight delays and cancellations

Passengers flying in Thailand will soon receive higher flight compensation for long delays and cancellations, under new regulations issued by the Civil Aviation Committee. Regulation No. 101, which outlines measures to protect passenger rights on both domestic and international scheduled flights, will take effect on Nov. 20.

For domestic flights, passengers affected by delays of more than five hours will now be entitled to 1,200 baht, up from the previous 600 baht. In the case of flight cancellations, compensation will rise from 1,200 baht to 1,500 baht. Continued …

Thailand’s foreign tourist arrivals this year up to the end of August fell 7.16% from the same period a year earlier, the Tourism Ministry said yesterday. There were 21.9 million foreign visitors during the period, with China the largest source market with 3.1 million arrivals.

Cha-am Drug Party Raid: 52 Arrested at Pool Villa

Police and local officials raided a pool villa in Cha-am, 52 young men and women were allegedly holding a drug-fueled party in the early hours yesterday.

The joint operation, led by Provincial Police Region 7 officers, Cha-am police, and district officials, uncovered a large gathering aged between 16 and 28. Ministry: GDP growth to exceed 2.2%

The Bank of Thailand expects the country’s economic growth to fall below its potential next year, weighed down by sluggishness in several sectors. Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

Thai-EU FTA talks unlikely to conclude this year

The Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) admitted yesterday that talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union are unlikely to conclude this year, despite earlier expectations. DTN Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said obstacles remain, with many sensitive and complex issues still under negotiation.

Chotima explained that negotiations, which began in 2023, cover 20 groups of trade and services across 24 sections. So far, only seven sections have been agreed upon, leaving 17 sections unresolved, mostly concerning market access and investment. Continued …

Panel wants Land Bridge study redone

The House Committee on Land, Natural Resources and Environment is calling for a thorough review of the Environmental and Health Impact Assessment (EHIA) for the controversial land bridge megaproject, saying the report contains incomplete and/or inaccurate information that could hurt the project’s prospects.

People’s Party MP Poonsak Chanchampee, in his capacity as the committee’s chair, said the current EHIA for the project doesn’t address the concerns raised by local communities. Continued …

While foreign visitor numbers have slowed in the first half of 2025 compared to last year, primarily due to a downturn in the key Chinese market, the country’s major publicly listed airline and hotel businesses have reported significant profits, demonstrating resilience amid global economic fluctuations and other challenges.

In the first six months of 2025, the airline industry as a whole saw a positive trend. Crypto sandbox targets tourists

Two more lives lost off Phuket’s treacherous coastline

Two more lives were lost in Phuket’s deadly waters in just 24 hours, sparking urgent calls for more warnings and lifeguards. In the early hours of yesterday, a Russian man went for a midnight swim with his partner in Saku, Thalang. Strong currents quickly pulled them under, and the 25-year-old gave his life to save hers.

Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT

Marine and coastal conservation project launched in Hua Hin

Ratchaburi Rajabhat University has launched a marine and coastal conservation project at the Blue Crab Bank in Khao Takiab to promote environmental awareness and sustainable tourism.

Hua Hin City Municipality has launched the “Bright Age, Away from Dementia” project, aimed at promoting health and improving the quality of life among elderly residents.

Young elephant dies in PKK after attack by larger elephant

A young female elephant from the Pa La-U area was found dead in the Huai Sat Yai reservoir after being fatally injured in an attack by a larger elephant, officials confirmed yesterday.

The carcass was discovered in the “Sao Ha” reservoir area in Ban Khon Nom Pattana, Huai Sat Yai, outside the boundaries of Kaeng Krachan National Park. A joint team of park officials, administrative officers, police, soldiers, veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, and members of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand inspected the site. New rules for SIM cards will require facial recognition

The government has announced stricter measures for SIM card registration to combat rising online fraud, following cases in which criminals have exploited SIM-swap scams to steal from victims.

The system will apply to all new mobile subscribers, both prepaid and post-paid, as well as existing users replacing SIM cards while keeping the same number. The technology verifies identity in real time through facial recognition, similar to banking applications. This prevents scammers from using photos, videos, or 3D masks to impersonate others, a loophole that previously enabled fraudulent SIM registration, he said. Continued …

Jay Fai Fined 2,000 Baht for Unclear Menu Pricing Dispute

The Ministry of Commerce has issued a 2,000 baht fine to Michelin-starred street food vendor Jay Fai following a pricing complaint by a Thai YouTuber.

The controversy began when Pitchaya “Peachii” Chaychana, a YouTuber residing in the UK, visited Jay Fai’s establishment in Bangkok and was astonished by the price of her crab omelette. Although the menu listed the dish at 1,500 baht, Peachii and her friends were charged 4,000 baht. The difference, they were told, was due to the substitution of premium crab meat. Continued …

Wild Elephants Kill Villager in Khon Kaen

A group of wild elephants entered agricultural land in Si Chomphu District, Khon Kaen Province, and fatally attacked a local villager during the night.

Police from Si Chomphu District, together with volunteers from the Sattha Tham Si Chomphu Charity Assn., discovered the body floating face-down in a pond in Dong Lan subdistrict. Officials discover 20 preserved bodies at AIDS treatment temple

Officials from the Ministry of Public Health raided Phra Bat Nampu Temple in the central province of Lop Buri, where they discovered 20 bodies of AIDS patients illegally preserved and displayed in a museum within the temple.

Phra Bat Nampu Temple, also known as the AIDS temple, has long been running donation campaigns to raise funds for underprivileged AIDS patients. Many donors chose to support this temple, believing their contributions would directly benefit the patients. Continued …

Tourism Minister proposes Bt700 million budget for free domestic flights

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong plans to request a Bt700-million budget from the Cabinet for a domestic flight giveaway initiative aimed at attracting at least 200,000 international tourists to various destinations across Thailand.

Sorawong said yesterday the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will submit a proposal to the Cabinet next week for the allocation of the budget to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Mother’s Day Weekend Travel Boosts Economy with 13.75 Billion Baht Revenue

Thailand experienced a tourism surge during Mother’s Day weekend, with 3.16 million trips contributing 13.75 billion baht. The average hotel occupancy rate reached 66%, with Thai nationals comprising 41% of travelers.

The central region led in trips (898,000), followed by the northeast (609,600) and east (600,500). Airports of Thailand revises Suvarnabhumi Airport plan, targets 120 million passengers

The Airports of Thailand (AoT) has revised the Suvarnabhumi Airport master plan, targeting a development project that can accommodate up to 120 million passengers per year, as it eyes the east expansion project tender next year.

Foreigner drowns, another critical at Phuket’s Kata Beach

A foreigner drowned in the sea off Kata Beach in Phuket yesterday, while another foreigner survived but was left in a critical condition. Witnesses said locals managed to pull both foreigners from the water, but one had already died.

    Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm.
