PM to chair Pheu Thai party meeting in Hua Hin tomorrow

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will take a day away from matters of government tomorrow so she can chair a general meeting of the Pheu Thai Party in Hua Hin. Also attending will be former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, her father, and Srettha Thavisin.

Paetongtarn will travel to Hua Hin by train, departing from Bangkok in the morning, stopping at Bang Bamru railway station to pick up her family, who will include her sister, Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong’s family and her elder brother, Panthongtae Shinawatra. Data paints economy as ‘black hole’

I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand.

Cabinet approves debt-relief measures

The cabinet on Wednesday approved debt support measures, including interest suspensions and reduced principal payments, to help tackle household and small-business debt, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. The measures will help retail borrowers and smaller businesses, she told a press conference.

Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira told reporters the cabinet also agreed to allow banks to reduce their annual contribution to the Financial Institutions Development Fund (FIDF) to 0.23% from 0.46% of their deposits for three years. Continued …

Thailand’s shrimp industry battered by disease, low prices

Thai shrimp production is expected to decrease by 4% year-on-year because of disease outbreaks and falling prices, says the Thai Shrimp Assn. Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the association, said total shrimp production in 2024 is predicted to fall to 270,000 tons, from 280,000 tons last year.

The decline is attributed to disease outbreaks and unstable weather, which affect the quality of baby shrimp and farming conditions. Falling prices have also prompted some farmers to postpone their new farming cycles. Continued …

Nearly 17.5 million motorists will be traveling during New Year break

The upcoming New Year holiday is expected to see a historic surge in people returning to their hometowns or traveling across provinces after the Covid-19 pandemic, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said on Wednesday.

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. A substantial amount of water evaporates as part of the cooling process and must be constantly replaced. Young people in Thailand call for a bigger role in climate action

Youth advocates yesterday submitted climate action recommendations to the Royal Thai government. The recommendations drew on a national Suan Dusit Poll of nearly 1,000 children and young people across Thailand, followed by one-to-one discussions between UNICEF and young representatives.

The poll found that 93% of young people reported feeling the impact of climate change in their daily lives, affecting their mental and physical health, and that 85% were eager to take action. British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

Collision on Chao Phraya River Near Bangkok Bridge, One Boat Sinks

A boat collision occurred on the Chao Phraya River near the Bangkok Bridge yesterday, resulting in one vessel sinking and damage to five others. Police officers from Bang Kho Laem Police Station, along with the Bangkok Fire and Rescue Department and the Marine Department, were dispatched to the scene to investigate.

The outbound lanes on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon will be re-opened to traffic within 14 days after work to clear the site of Friday’s crane collapse is finished, according to the Department of Highways (DoH).

Rama 2 motorway construction deaths reach 142

Six more workers were killed and 11 injured in Rama 2 motorway collapse, pushing the total death toll to 142 since 2018. Thailand’s police chief ordered a criminal probe, as officials investigate the cause of the disaster and promised compensation for victims’ families.

Authorities are pursuing legal action against unidentified individuals in a black car who fired four gunshots at wild elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The perpetrators face six serious charges under wildlife, firearm, and national park laws.

Mongkol Chaiphakdee, chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, revealed that on Nov. 29, at around 7 pm, a concerned citizen reported the incident, seen via a TikTok video. The footage captured individuals in the car firing shots on Nong Phlap–Huai Sat Yai Road, Huai Sat Yai subdistrict, Hua Hin district. Wild elephants were present on the road during the shooting. Flooding driven by heavy rains in southern Thailand has killed nine people and displaced more than 13,000, officials said Saturday, as rescue teams using boats and jet skis worked to reach stranded residents. Electricity price will be cut to 4.15 baht per unit for January-April

The Ministry of Energy has agreed to cut the price of electricity by three satang, from 4.18 baht per unit to 4.15 baht, from January through April next year.

Thai factory output down 0.91% y/y in October, seen rising in 2025

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 0.91% in October from a year earlier, the industry ministry said on Wednesday, falling less than analysts’ expectations. The figure compared with a forecast fall of 1.85% for October in a Reuters poll, and followed an annual drop of 3.51% in September.

Factory output for the first 10 months of 2024 contracted 1.63% from a year earlier, and the ministry forecast it would fall 1.6% for the full year. Output has been weighed down by weaker car production and high household debt that has crimped domestic spending, the ministry said. Continued …

Van crash in Thap Sakae district leaves 3 dead

In the early hours yesterday, a crash occurred on Phetkasem Road Huai Yang subdistrict, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan. A red-plate Toyota van used for transporting a psychiatric patient collided with the rear of a trailer truck, resulting in three fatalities and one injury.

The accident happened at approximately 2: am just 2 kilometers before Wanakorn Beach National Park. The van used by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) to transport a psychiatric patient for treatment in Nakhon Pathom was returning to Chumphon when the crash occurred. Continued …

New Zealand citizen poisoned by tainted alcohol in Laos returns home

A New Zealand citizen poisoned after drinking contaminated alcohol in a popular tourist town in Laos has returned home, authorities said today, as Laos pledged to prosecute those responsible for the incident that has killed six tourists.

“The New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok has been providing assistance to one New Zealander who we believe to have been poisoned with methanol in Laos. They have now departed Laos and returned home,” a New Zealand Foreign Ministry spokesperson said by email, without providing further details on the person. Continued …

Here’s where methanol poisonings happen most

Two Australian teenagers died this week after becoming ill with suspected methanol poisoning in Laos, along with a dozen other tourists. Six people have now died, and they are all believed to have consumed drinks laced with methanol.

The Australian government has updated its travel advice for Laos, telling residents to be alert to the potential risk of spirit-based drinks, including cocktails. Alarm over end of Thailand’s free medicines policy

A civil society group is unhappy with the Medical Council of Thailand’s legal action against the National Health Security Office (NHSO)’s policy over free medicine for 16 ailments under the universal healthcare scheme. It suggested the council immediately withdraw the lawsuit for the sake of patients.

Saree Aongsomwang, secretary-general of the Thailand Consumer Council (TCC), on Saturday expressed concern about the conflict between the Medical Council of Thailand and the Pharmacy Council of Thailand after the Supreme Administrative Court accepted the council’s complaint against the NHSO policy, which provides free medicine at pharmacies for symptoms on the list. Passengers record satisfaction with airlines

Airline passenger satisfaction remained high and stable this year, according to the International Air Transport Assn. (IATA), though the association suggested investing more in technology to meet customer demand.

Thailand plans major revamp of venues to host global events

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong outlined plans to revitalize Thailand’s events infrastructure and attract world-class competitions and concerts. He told the press on Wednesday that the ministry will act as a mediator between Chulalongkorn University and private companies to redevelop the National Stadium and the Nimibutr Sports Building.

The Physical Education Department’s contract for the stadium has expired and the owner, Chulalongkorn University, will be encouraged to allow private-sector management to transform it into a “multi-function stadium”. Continued …

THAI Airways to fly wide-body jets on domestic routes this December

In a move that’s sure to delight frequent flyers, Thai Airways (THAI) revealed plans to swap its A320s for wide-bodied aircraft on select domestic routes this December, just in time for the peak holiday season. The airline is ramping up capacity to accommodate the soaring demand during the Christmas-to-New Year rush, from Dec. 20 to 31.

While official word from THAI’s communications team is still pending, several travel sources, including Nation Online, have confirmed the changes. Starting in early December, Boeing 777s, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Airbus A330s will replace the smaller A320s on key domestic routes, including those to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai. Hotel booze rules relaxed over New Year’s

Hotel guests will be allowed to order alcoholic drinks to their rooms from in-house bars and restaurants around the clock over the New Year, according to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. The new rule was approved by the board, chaired by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, when it met on Monday.

Normally, guests can only order alcohol to their rooms during the regular hours: until 10pm from an in-house restaurant, or until 2am from an in-house bar. Continued …

The Labor Ministry will study Sweden’s pension system in a bid to improve the Social Security Office’s (SSO) scheme and better address the needs of social security subscribers in an aged society, according to Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has sought help from 50 American influencers to promote Thai restaurants in the U.S. that have won certificates of authenticity from his ministry. Thai rice prices surge in 2024 as demand outstrips supply

The Commerce Ministry has announced an increase in Thai rice prices for 2024, with both export prices and paddy prices on the rise. Jasmine rice has seen a significant price increase, with premium varieties fetching 16,000 baht per ton. Projections suggest exports could hit 9 million tons this year.

Twenty-five tons of krathong floats and garbage have been collected from the Ping River after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down from 33 tons last year.

Chiang Mai Deputy Gov. Tosapol Phuanudom on Tuesday presided over the launch of a campaign to collect krathong floats, garbage and debris from the river at the Pa Dad sluice gate in Muang district. Thunderstorms possible tomorrow

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a weather forecast for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms and heavy rain in certain areas. Bangkok and central regions are expected to experience the most severe conditions, affecting 22 provinces in total.

In the southern region (eastern coast), thunderstorms are expected in 30% of the area, with heavy rain, particularly in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C to highs of 31 to 34°C. Easterly winds will blow at speeds of 10 to 30 km/h. Lax Law Enforcement Cited for Alarming Road Fatalities in Thailand

Advocates are raising concerns about insufficient enforcement of road safety laws, which they believe is significantly contributing to Thailand’s staggering road fatality rate. On average, the country registers around 48 road deaths daily.

Speaking at a recent event marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, advocates pressed for immediate improvements in law enforcement. Facebook scams and fraudulent activities have inflicted significant financial damage, totaling 718 million baht over the past year, according to the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister, Prasert Jantararuangtong.

A total of 514,590 krathong floats were collected from Bangkok waterways after Friday’s Loy Krathong festival, down 19.6% from last year. Lat Krabang district saw the highest number of floats.

Studies have shown that loneliness and isolation can have a negative health impact, comparable to risks associated with smoking up to 15 cigarettes or drinking six glasses of alcohol per day.

According to a report by the National Economic and Social Development Council, the number of Thais who received mental health services increased from 1.3 million in 2015 to 2.9 million in 2023.
