Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. This province shares a border with Thailand’s eastern Ubon Ratchathani province, raising concerns for potential cross-border transmission, said Kenika, highlighting raw beef, buffalo, goat, and sheep meat as potential carriers of the bacterium. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. The government-set safe threshold is 37.5µg/m³. Continued …

Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the young victim, known as “Nong Din,” but also left his 16-year-old friend seriously injured after being caught in the gunfire. Continued …

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. The disease has claimed 25 lives in 16 provinces this year alone, he said. Continued …

Alarm sounded for tainted fruit, vegetable imports

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is calling on the government to examine fruit and vegetables purchased from neighboring countries and China more carefully after pesticide contamination was discovered in some imports of farm produce.

“Thailand continues to import fruit and vegetables contaminated by chemicals banned in many countries,” said Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the FTI. Continued …

Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

He said that he raised his dogs with love and best care, but they were killed by poison-laced food. ‘I am speechless and broken-hearted. I have already filed a complaint with the police, as the killings violate the law,’ he said. Continued …

Thai police the least trusted law enforcement agency

Thai citizens view corruption within the civil service sector as motivated by greed more than any other reason, a new NIDA poll published on Sunday revealed.

Over 59% of respondents said they believed civil servant corruption was due to financial reasons, while 31.5% believed that corruption stemmed from public admiration for rich, godfatherly figures. Continued …

Swiss man to lose elephant foundation

Phuket authorities will revoke the elephant foundation license of the Swiss man who allegedly kicked a Thai woman doctor on a beach, after canceling his gun licenses, according to the Phuket governor.

Gov. Sophon Suwannarat said on Saturday that investigators suspected that Urs Fehr’s Green Elephant Wildlife foundation was used for illegal purposes and its license would be revoked. Continued …

Thai retail sector struggles despite tax incentives and tourist spending

Despite increased spending by tourists and tax incentives to encourage buying, Thailand’s retail sector is under strain. The sector, facing the challenges of a surge of substandard goods from China, is burdening local entrepreneurs.

Thai Retailers Assn. Vice President Chatchai Tuongratanaphan predicts a growth of only 1%-2% in the retail sector for the first half of the year. This is due to the postponed fiscal 2024 budget and the termination of the Easy E-Receipt scheme, which provided tax rebates of up to 50,000 baht (US$1,409) for spending from Jan. 1 to Feb. 15. Majority of 12,000 Thais in Dubai are working illegally

Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented.

Nipa Nirannoot, the Thai consul-general in Dubai, said many Thai women have been lured to work in massage parlors, but end up being forced into prostitution. Others work in online gambling or scam networks, lured with the promise of work in oil fields and abandoned once they arrive there, she said. Continued …

Michelin plans to invest 300 million euros in Thailand

The government said on Friday French tire maker Michelin planned to invest 300 million euros (11.63 billion baht) in Thailand over the next three years to increase production capacity.

Temperatures set to soar in Hua Hin this week and next

Temperatures in Hua Hin and across Thailand are set to soar over the next week. The Thai Meteorological Department’s seven-day forecast for Hua Hin says maximum temperatures will range from 36–38 °C, with average temperatures between March 6-12 reaching 35°C.

However, forecasters say the temperatures may actually feel much warmer. According to the heat index, average temperatures will feel like 42 °C. Continued …

During a morning stroll through vast salt fields in the seaside town of Samut Sakhon, I couldn’t resist but take breathtaking photos of a large flock of birds. Close by, experienced birdwatcher Suchart Daengpayon (also known as Mr. Tee) led a small group of foreign tourists on a trip to see the food-seeking behaviors of the spoon-billed sandpiper, an endangered shorebird species.

Fortunately, Mr. Tee kindly allowed me to use his spotting scope and gave me a brief overview of bird conservation efforts in tambon Khok Kham. Over 30 years ago, he and his neighbors established the Khok Kham Natural Conservation Club after working with an international survey team that wanted to get insights on the biodiverse marine habitats in Thailand’s wetlands. Heat stroke is a real danger with “feels like” temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius possible in the current humid conditions, the weather office warns.

The Meteorological Department said that on Tuesday feels-like temperatures peaked at 50.6°C in Trat, 48.1°C in Bangkok, 42.5°C in Krabi, 39.9°C in Tak and 38.7°C in Nakhon Ratchasima. Continued …

Consumers biggest losers as speeds drop, prices rise after telecom mergers

Mergers in the telecommunications industry have resulted in poor network quality and rising prices, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said on Tuesday.

NESDC was citing a recent survey by the Consumer Protection Board, which said that consumers are paying more for very little. For instance, it said, the price of a basic mobile package has risen from 349 baht to 399 baht, while the internet speed has dropped. Rama II Road upgrades will be completed in 2025, government says

There is an end in sight to the ongoing construction of the main route between Bangkok and the south of Thailand. The Department of Highways has confirmed that the long-awaited upgrades to Rama II Road, a key artery to Thailand’s southern region, are set to be completed by 2025.

Thai forest area in decline, matching world trend

The world’s total forest areas have shrunk by nearly 20 million square kilometres in the past three decades, from 42.03 million sq.km. reported in 1992, to 40.44 million sq.km. in 2021, according to World Bank data, which was last updated in October 2023.

Thailand, meanwhile, does not make the World Bank’s top 10, or even top 20 list of the largest share of world forests. Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas. Firefighters and helicopters halt huge Chiang Mai forest fire

Some 250 firefighters backed by two helicopters on Tuesday managed to halt a forest blaze that raged through 33,000 rai of Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district.

The fires were put out just a day after the Third Army Area deployed troops to help fight the blaze and deter local villagers from setting new fires in the vast national park. The helicopters were credited with playing a huge role in helping park officials, troops, volunteers and locals to put out the blazes. Continued …

Tak province battles spreading wildfires across nine districts

Wildfires in the province of Tak have intensified, expanding across nine districts and prompting coordinated emergency responses to combat the flames and prevent hazardous smog, including the dangerous PM2.5 particles. The province’s governor Somchai Kitcharoenrungroj has mobilized all units for swift action to contain the wildfires within a limited area to minimize damage and reduce smoke haze.

A power bank exploded on an AirAsia flight mid-air, sending passengers into panic. The plane was flying from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in the south of the country when flames and smoke were seen.

7-Eleven in Thailand Reports Record Income of 399 Billion Baht, plans expansion

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

CP All stated the increasing profit and income was from an increase in average sales of 5.5%, or 80,837 baht daily on average in each 7-11. It was reported that each customer spent 83 baht on average per bill and each store had 965 customers daily on average. Continued …

Air quality in most of the country to improve for a week

Bangkok and 37 other provinces are still facing high levels of PM2.5 airborne pollution, but the situation is expected to improve tomorrow through next Saturday, the Pollution Control Department reported yesterday.

Dengue fever cases in Thailand on the rise

A liver fluke is a parasitic worm. You can become infected after eating contaminated raw or under-cooked freshwater fish or watercress. Infections are usually treated with a drug called triclabendazole. Thailand’s economic challenge: short-term relief vs long-term structural woes

The 5-2 vote by the Thai central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to hold the key policy rate at 2.50% is a hint of an impending rate cut at their next meeting, according to some economists. The MPC decision in January disappointed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his aides, who had been forcefully arguing for the rate cut.

Srettha, who is also finance minister, said that he could not interfere with the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s independence. Two of the MPC members voted for a rate cut because inflation has been negative and economic growth has slowed down. Continued …

Thai 2023 GDP expands at 1.9%, slower than expected

Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 1.9% in 2023, the National Social and Economic Development Council (NESDC) said today, as higher tourist numbers and private consumption were undercut by falls in manufacturing and public spending.

The weaker-than-expected growth raises the case for an interest rate cut at the Bank of Thailand’s next policy review on April 10, after it left the key rate steady at 2.50%, the highest in more than a decade, in a split vote. Continued …

With nearly half its GDP off the books or in the dark, a top banker has called for moves to rein in the country’s black economy. Thai Bankers Assn. President Phayong Sriwanich, this week, made the call.

It comes with Thailand’s economy in the doldrums and facing significant challenges. These include external geopolitical threats and mounting concerns also about political instability inside the country. Delays to key infrastructure projects in EEC discourage foreign investors

Foreign investors are reluctant to invest in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) because of delays in some major infrastructure projects, among them the high-speed train linking U-Tapao, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, according to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and government sources.

The high-speed train project has been delayed for four years, since the signing of the contract between the SRT and Asia Era One Co. in 2019. Continued …
