Attapong Pao-on, chief of the Kui Buri National Park, revealed that pushing wild elephants back into the forest zone was a key approach to reducing damage to properties and crops. Implementation, however, is by no means easy.

Discouraging wild elephants to not invade people’s farmlands involves many risks and challenges. It is necessary to lay down structure and delegate duties for smooth operations, which focus on the effectiveness and efficiency of wild elephant monitoring, as well as the safety of the staff involved. NHSO asked to deal with overwhelming cancer patient surge

Srinagarind Hospital has urged the National Health Security Office (NHSO) to take steps to deal with the influx of cancer patients, as it has witnessed an 830% surge in treatment seekers under the Cancer Treatment Anywhere (CA) program.

Hospital director Dr. Somsak Tiamkao said on Tuesday its facility was overwhelmed by a spike in cancer patients referred to the hospital under the NHSO’s CA program. This has overstretched the hospital’s resources and staffing, he noted. Continued …

Cooking gas price remains capped

The Energy Policy Administration Committee has resolved to extend the capped price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking at 423 baht per 15-kilogram cylinder until March 31 next year.

Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Tuesday the capped retail price extension was effective from Jan. 1. It was based on the wholesale LPG price at refineries, at 20.9179 baht per kilogram. Continued …

Russian fined for Christmas lights on car

A Russian driver was fined 500 baht for covering his car with strings of small Christmas lights. Traffic police spotted and stopped his colorfully lit sedan on Sukhumvit road in Chon Buri.

The 25-year-old Russian driver explained that he was unaware it was against the law. He had seen other cars in Bangkok that were similarly decorated. He just wanted to celebrate the Christmas-New Year festival. Continued …

This newly passed amendment, swiftly moving through all three readings in a single day, updates the existing clause that allowed parents to “punish the child in a reasonable manner for disciplinary purposes.”

Key to the amendment is the prohibition of punishment involving abuse, violence, or any form of harm to a child’s body or mind. It also mandates that disciplinary actions respect a child’s human dignity, safeguarding their physical and mental well-being. Cabinet okays raising foreign staff quota

The cabinet has approved in principle increasing the number of foreign workers at businesses to deal with the shortage. According to government spokesman Jirayu Huangsab, under Thai laws the number of foreign workers at a single business is limited to a ceiling of 100 individuals, and for stateless foreign workers, the limit is 50 per business.

The law limiting the number of foreign workers has been in place since 1979. However, the economic landscape has significantly changed in 45 years, making it appropriate to increase the proportion of foreign workers per business. Continued …

Better incentives for foreign film shoots

The cabinet on Tuesday approved a revised cash rebate scheme for foreign film shoots, as proposed by the Tourism and Sports Ministry.

The new incentive of a cash rebate of up to 30% for foreign film shoots in Thailand with no maximum refund limit should increase revenue for the country by 20%, or at least 7.5 billion baht in 2025, attracting more large productions. Continued …

Compeq invests Bt10.4 billion in Thai PCB export base

Compeq, the world’s fifth largest printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturer, has spent 10.4 billion baht on making Thailand its new key export base to serve growing demand for PCBs in a range of industries from electric vehicles to data centers, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Compeq (Thailand) Co., which applied for investment incentives from the board in December last year, opened a factory yesterday. The plant, spanning 112 rai of land in Asia Industrial Estate in Samut Prakan, already employs 600 Thai workers. This is set to reach 1,500 next year. Continued …

People intending to visit Thailand will be able to apply online for an e-visa at Thai embassies and consulates worldwide from Jan. 1. Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said that from Jan. 1, the Thai e-visa system would be operative at all 94 Thai embassies and consulates.

Majority of Thais have no travel plans for year-end

Over 67% of Thais have not made any travel plans for the year-end holidays, mostly due to concern about their financial status and high traveling expenses, a survey has found.

The Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) conducted a survey in November among 5,669 citizens nationwide regarding their travel plans for November and December. In the survey, 67.72% of respondents said they have no travel plans, with 38.55% saying they are concerned about their current financial status or problems. Continued …

ERC clears 72 clean energy suppliers

The Energy Regulatory Commission’s secretary-general released a list of 72 solar and wind farms to generate 2,145.3 megawatts of electricity despite an earlier order by the energy minister to delay the purchase of clean energy.

Sopacha Dhumrongpiyawut, managing director of Gunkul Engineering Public Co., revealed that the company was selected by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to provide the feed-in tarff (FiT) renewable energy for the period of 2022-2030.

Thailand bans imports of plastic waste from January 1

Importers in Thailand will not be allowed to bring plastic waste into the kingdom from Jan. 1, as the country moves to prevent hazards to the environment and public health, the Department of Foreign Trade announced on Tuesday.

The move, proposed by the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, was approved by the Cabinet on Dec. 3 and published in the Royal Gazette on Monday, Arada Fuangtong, the department’s director-general said. Continued …

234 new species discovered in the Greater Mekong region

A lizard with a name that sounds like it could star in Game of Thrones, a soft-furred hedgehog, a high-altitude crocodile newt, a freshwater fish already well-known among aquarium enthusiasts, and a new genus of palm tree are just some of the 234 species described by scientists in the Greater Mekong region of Southeast Asia in 2023, according to a report released by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Upgrade of Hua Hin Airport to continue next year

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Saturday the ministry had ordered the Department of Airports, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other agencies to develop Hua Hin’s operations, including acquiring a certificate to operate it as an international airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), said the development plan for Hua Hin Airport consists of two major projects. The first, expanding the runway, has been completed. The second, work on related infrastructure aspects of the airport, such as the runway tunnel over the highway, still need 300 billion baht and budget approval. Continued …

“It will be the end of Hua Hin as a laid back beach town resort. Tourist operators from China, India and Russia will promote Hua Hin as a place to have a vacation.”

“Heard this rubbish for years and they cannot even get a single service yet from Singapore or KL . And, of course, if you noticed the traffic congestion already in peak season, and the new train station, the road system will also need upgrades. Have they planned for that?”

Hua Hin’s Norsk “MC gang”

Hua Hin is home to an active Norwegian motorcycle “gang” that call itself “Kubik Gjengen”. The group is far from a hard-core gang but more like a touring group of about 40 Norwegians.

The Countries With the Best Healthcare Coverage

Canada is the leading country worldwide for essential healthcare coverage, according to The World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Health Statistics 2024 report. The organization ranked 194 countries based on a selection of indicators of key health concerns, such as reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health, infectious diseases, noncommunicable diseases and service capacity and access.

The WHO is monitoring universal health coverage by tracking two main indicators worldwide: the coverage of essential health services (SDG 3.8.1) and the lack of financial protection (SDG 3.8.2), which is defined as the “proportion of a country’s population with large household expenditures on health relative to their total household expenditure.” Continued …

Rama II Road reopens after crane accident caused fatalities

Yesterday, a wild elephant from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary crossed into a village in Prachinburi Province, fatally attacking a 45-year-old man near a sugarcane field.

Construction Workers Found Dead After Landslide on Koh Samui

In an incident on Koh Samui, Surat Thani, a landslide caused by heavy rain buried the makeshift shelters of construction workers, leaving two men from Myanmar missing. The workers were stationed at a site where four vacation homes were being constructed located on a hillside.

It’s a familiar smell for spa-goers: a traditional Thai herbal compress. The treatment combines herbs in a cotton cloth, which is wrapped into a compact ball and steamed for around 10 minutes before the practitioner applies it to the body, typically after a massage.

Herbal compresses have been used for centuries for muscle aches, joint pain, and to reduce inflammation. However, it’s unclear how much benefit comes from the herbs: a 2015 review paper highlighted that the effects were mainly associated with heat, which increases blood flow and reduces pain. PM to chair Pheu Thai party meeting in Hua Hin tomorrow

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will take a day away from matters of government tomorrow so she can chair a general meeting of the Pheu Thai Party in Hua Hin. Also attending will be former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, her father, and Srettha Thavisin.

Paetongtarn will travel to Hua Hin by train, departing from Bangkok in the morning, stopping at Bang Bamru railway station to pick up her family, who will include her sister, Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong’s family and her elder brother, Panthongtae Shinawatra. I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. Cabinet approves debt-relief measures

The cabinet on Wednesday approved debt support measures, including interest suspensions and reduced principal payments, to help tackle household and small-business debt, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. Thailand’s shrimp industry battered by disease, low prices

Thai shrimp production is expected to decrease by 4% year-on-year because of disease outbreaks and falling prices, says the Thai Shrimp Assn. Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the association, said total shrimp production in 2024 is predicted to fall to 270,000 tons, from 280,000 tons last year.

The decline is attributed to disease outbreaks and unstable weather, which affect the quality of baby shrimp and farming conditions. Falling prices have also prompted some farmers to postpone their new farming cycles. Continued …

Nearly 17.5 million motorists will be traveling during New Year break

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. Young people in Thailand call for a bigger role in climate action

Youth advocates yesterday submitted climate action recommendations to the Royal Thai government. The recommendations drew on a national Suan Dusit Poll of nearly 1,000 children and young people across Thailand, followed by one-to-one discussions between UNICEF and young representatives.

The poll found that 93% of young people reported feeling the impact of climate change in their daily lives, affecting their mental and physical health, and that 85% were eager to take action. British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

British man’s Thai-high trip goes up in smoke at Manchester customs

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

Rainmaking flights over Hua Hin give air quality instant boost

The air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin, Bangkok, its adjacent provinces and some northern provinces has reportedly improved following the first day of rainmaking flights by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (DRRAA).

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Itthi Sirilathayakorn said on Tuesday that the Royal Rainmaking Operation Units in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district and Kanchanaburi province began their mission in the afternoon on Monday. Continued …

Severe flooding in the south has claimed 25 lives and affected more than 660,000 households in 10 provinces, with large areas of six provinces still inundated as the water drains slowly off.

Phatsakorn Bunyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), said on Tuesday that from Nov. 23 to Dec. 3, flooding triggered by days of heavy rain was reported in 10 southern provinces – Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Trang, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Baby elephants’ trunks caught in snares, rescue underway

Authorities from the Department of Conservation Area 2 (Sriracha) mobilized a team of veterinarians and wildlife officers to rescue two injured baby elephants trapped in snares. Concerns have been raised over the potential danger posed by the protective elephant herd during the operation.

The injured elephants were first spotted on Sunday in the forest around Kaeng Hang Maew, Kaeng Hang Maew District, Chanthaburi. AIS expects consolidation with TTTBB by next year

Advanced Info Service (AIS) targets completion of the consolidation of its own fixed broadband internet system with that of Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by the end of 2025. AIS took over TTTBB in November 2023. The consolidation covers operations, billing, services and back-up systems.

40% of fathers smoke, survey shows

Almost four in 10 fathers in Thailand smoke cigarettes, which mostly has a negative influence on their children, especially as more young people are now vaping while the average age of people who vape drops each year, according to new survey findings.

The survey, conducted recently on 1,159 fathers and other male relatives who have a key role in raising a child from birth until six years of age, found that 39.8% of respondents are smokers. Most (77.22%) smoke cigarettes, 12.36% vape and the rest both smoke both, he said. Continued …

Cabinet puts Bt10,000 benefit for the elderly on hold

The cabinet instructed the Finance Ministry today to review the second phase of the digital wallet scheme, under which about four million people over 60 would have received a 10,000 baht cash benefit next January.

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra asked the Finance Ministry to study the legal aspects of the scheme in more detail and to resubmit its findings to the cabinet for consideration. The influx of Chinese goods has put pressure on Thailand’s manufacturing growth and has hindered loan expansion within the banking sector, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput yesterday. He addressed these concerns at the “Thailand Next Move 2025: Resiliency for an Uncertain World” seminar held by Money and Banking magazine.

Since 2014, Southeast Asian countries have witnessed a consistent rise in Chinese imports, with a noticeable acceleration starting in 2020. This surge is largely attributed to escalating geopolitical and economic fragmentation, Sethaput noted. By 2023, Thailand’s imports from China reached $71.1 billion (roughly 2.53 trillion baht), making Thailand the second largest importer of Chinese goods in Southeast Asia, just after Vietnam. Thai exports have performed better than expected this year, says the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC), which expects 2024 forecasts to be upgraded as the year draws to a close.

Cabinet approves 38.58 billion baht for rice farmers’ subsidies

The Cabinet on Tuesday earmarked 38.58 billion baht to cover subsidies for 4.68 million rice-farming households nationwide this year, Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said. She said the funds would be spent on providing a 1,000 baht per rai subsidy, capped at 10 rai per family.

Once the budget is formally approved by the Cabinet, the Agricultural Extension Department will send the list of eligible farmers to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to remit the money within this year, Narumon said. Continued …

Saudia Arabia flights to Phuket begin

Cabinet to consider carbon tax next week

The Finance Ministry is set to propose a carbon tax for cabinet approval on Dec. 11. Speaking at the Sustainability Forum 2025 seminar on Tuesday, Kulaya Tantitemit, director-general of the Excise Department, said the implementation of the carbon tax would not affect operators or consumers of oil and petroleum products because the overall tax burden on oil and petroleum products will remain the same.

Road safety above profits

The collapse of a launching gantry crane and precast concrete on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon early on Friday morning resulted in the deaths of six construction workers and the injury of nine others. It was a shocking accident on this stretch of road, also known as Highway 35, which is already well known for its high rate of motoring accidents.

Last week’s collapse adds to a grim list of statistics linked to the road. According to the Department of Highways (DoH), 2,242 accidents occurred on the highway during 2018-2023, or 373 cases each year. In those six years, 132 people died, and 1,305 people were injured. Continued …

14 southern provinces on high alert for floods from today

Fourteen provinces in southern Thailand have been warned to prepare for potential flash floods, runoff, and prolonged flooding between Dec. 3 to 5.

30% of tourists to Japan experienced overtourism problems in 2024

Over 30% of foreign tourists to Japan experienced problems associated with overtourism during their trips in 2024, and more than 60% said they are willing to accept higher charges as a way to ease congestion and protect natural and cultural resources, according to a recent survey.

The survey of 7,796 foreigners about their travel plans and experiences, jointly conducted by the Development Bank of Japan and the Japan Travel Bureau Foundation and released in October, found that congestion of tourist destinations was the most common problem, with 32% of respondents saying they experienced it during their stay. Excessive PM2.5 pollution in many parts of Bangkok today

Air quality in Bangkok today is poor, with the amount of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere measured in 63 places as exceeding the 37.5 micron (µg/m³) safety level, according to the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).

The levels of PM2.5 over the past 24 hours, as measured at 7am this morning, range from 30.9-56.3µg/m³s, with the worst air pollution being reported in Nong Khaem, where the level was 56.3µg/m³s. Continued …

Electric buses spell end to Phuket songthaews

The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO) on Monday did a test run of its fleet of electric buses, which were bought to alleviate air pollution, reduce traffic congestion and promote smart city development.

Two more dugongs found dead in seas off Krabi

Two more dugongs have been found dead in the sea off the southern province of Krabi, bringing the total number of deaths to 15 in the past two months.

One carcass was found floating in the sea in Chao Ooth Bay of Ko Lanta district by fishermen, while the other was found in the sea off Nua Khlong district. The outbound lanes on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon will be re-opened to traffic within 14 days after work to clear the site of Friday’s crane collapse is finished, according to the Department of Highways (DoH).

Director-general Apirat Chaiwongnoi said on Sunday work was underway to remove debris from the collapsed section of the elevated Ekkachai-Ban Phaeo Intercity Motorway 82 (M82) project. Continued …

Rama 2 motorway construction deaths reach 142

Six more workers were killed and 11 injured in Rama 2 motorway collapse, pushing the total death toll to 142 since 2018. Thailand’s police chief ordered a criminal probe, as officials investigate the cause of the disaster and promised compensation for victims’ families.

Driver Fires Shots to Scare Wild Elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park

Authorities are pursuing legal action against unidentified individuals in a black car who fired four gunshots at wild elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The perpetrators face six serious charges under wildlife, firearm, and national park laws.

Mongkol Chaiphakdee, chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, revealed that on Nov. 29, at around 7 pm, a concerned citizen reported the incident, seen via a TikTok video. The footage captured individuals in the car firing shots on Nong Phlap–Huai Sat Yai Road, Huai Sat Yai subdistrict, Hua Hin district. Wild elephants were present on the road during the shooting. Flooding driven by heavy rains in southern Thailand has killed nine people and displaced more than 13,000, officials said Saturday, as rescue teams using boats and jet skis worked to reach stranded residents. The construction incident on Rama II Road has claimed the lives of six people, as rescue and recovery efforts are expected to take two to three days. Authorities have temporarily closed the road and diverted traffic and advised motorists to avoid the area.

Samut Sakhon Gov. Narit Niramaivong and other key officials, including Lt. Col. Santhiti Thammajai from the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, inspected the site. “Our priority is clearing the debris and restoring traffic on this vital route, which serves many commuters,” said Narit. All 16 districts of the southern border province of Songkhla have been declared disaster zones due to severe floods, triggered by days of heavy rain, affecting more than 95,000 people.

Police have charged 16 individuals, including a German national and several Thai nominees, in connection with an illegal luxury villa development scheme on Koh Samui island, Thailand’s Police Region 8 Commander Surapong Thanomchit announced yesterday.
