Human-elephant relationship is a win-win

It has been many decades since Wanna Kerdzab’s family started using an area of over nearly five hectares, located near the edge of Kui Buri National Park to the east, as a source of food and land for farming.

IEAT working on feasibility study for Land Bridge Industrial Estate project

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT)’s feasibility study on the land bridge industrial estate project should be completed by the end of this year, probably within 6-8 months, the authority’s Gov. The Cabinet has approved a draft royal decree that sets the tax on profit from investment tokens at a flat rate of 15% instead of adding it to annual personal income.

Speaking to reporters after the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Revenue Department Director-general Kulaya Tantitemit said the lawmakers approved her department’s proposal to collect a flat 15% withholding tax for the sale of investment tokens and exempt the profits from being added to personal yearly income. Hua Hin love triangle tragedy: Millionaire and secretary’s deaths linked to affair

The police suspect that a love affair and jealousy may have been the motives behind the deaths of a millionaire and her secretary in a house located in the Hua Hin district of Prachuap Kiri Khan province. Thai man survives black bear attack during ant egg hunt

A Thai man survived an attack by an Asian black bear while hunting for ant eggs within the Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in the Isaan province of Buriram on the weekend.

The victim’s wife shared details of the incident on Sunday. She explained that her 60-year-old husband, Phumin Joysaku, entered the forest in the morning to search for ant eggs. The eggs and pupae of weaver ants are also known as Khai Mod Daeng in Thai. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices hit new high, breaking 37,000 baht mark

Gold prices continue to surge in Thailand, with the cost of gold ornaments breaking the 37,000 baht mark for the first time. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reported a significant increase compared to the previous day’s rate, where the selling price of gold ornaments reached 37,100 baht per baht-weight as of the latest update on March 11.

The domestic buying price for gold bars was set at 36,500 baht per baht-weight, with the selling price slightly higher at 36,600 baht. Thailand is making plans to shift its trade focus away from China and toward India in the longer term. It comes as news emerged this week of contaminated fruit and vegetables being dumped on Thai markets from China. Many of the substandard products are for sale at a fraction of the cost offered by Thai producers and farmers.

Similarly, Thailand’s manufacturing sector especially in fashion and furniture, is being decimated by China. Recent figures show only a 30%-45% utilization of factory capacity in these sectors. PM Budgeted 139 Million Baht To Fund World Tours

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been given a sum of 139 million baht in government funding at his disposal with which he may travel the world over for the current fiscal year, according to a government official.

Progress on 6 Thai FTAs now under negotiation

Thailand is negotiating 11 free trade agreements, including five related to upgrading existing FTAs, along with developing six new FTAs, as the kingdom aims to expand trade and investment with key trading partner countries near and distant.

According to information from the Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce, Thailand appears to have successfully negotiated and implemented a total of 15 FTAs with trading partners from 18 countries or territories. Extra flights scheduled for passenger convenience during Songkran

Sarun Benjanirat, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Office of Thailand (CAAT), has announced that 38 additional flights have been scheduled to transport passengers during the upcoming Songkran festival in response to the directive of Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit to implement short-term measures to counteract high airfare prices. Special promotions for airfares on all domestic routes will also be offered.

30 rainmaking planes to battle drought, pollution

The government plans to deploy 30 aircraft nationwide for cloud-seeding operations to induce artificial rain to battle air pollution and ease dry weather conditions in the main crop-growing areas.

Toll fees for Bangkok’s Chalong Rat (Ramindra-At Narong) and Burapha Withi expressways will be more expensive from today.

Bangkok’s eastern and central bus terminals set for relocation

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit announced plans on Tuesday to move the Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekkamai) and the Bangkok Bus Terminal (Mo Chit 2) to the Krung Thep Abhiwat Central Terminal. The intention behind the move is to offer more convenience to travelers, as the Central Terminal can be easily reached using the MRT electronic rail system.

A black panther sighting near Phanoen Thung in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park has been reported by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). Thailand welcomed 5,981,234 overseas visitors between Jan. 1 and Feb. 25, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol announced on Tuesday. She added that these visitors have generated revenue of around 290.92 billion baht for Thai entrepreneurs.

Chiang Mai tops world’s most polluted cities due to rampant forest fires

Chiang Mai has been blanketed by worsening haze, catapulting it to the top of the list of the world’s 10 most polluted cities. The thick smog is a direct consequence of forest fires that have been burning unabated for approximately two weeks.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected a total of 1,420 hotspots on Monday alone. Of these, 193 were located in Chiang Mai. Satellite information revealed that the hotspots were distributed across various areas, with 490 in forest conservation zones, 375 in forest reserve areas, 237 in agricultural regions, 186 in land reform areas, and the remaining in community areas. Firefighters and helicopters halt huge Chiang Mai forest fire

Some 250 firefighters backed by two helicopters on Tuesday managed to halt a forest blaze that raged through 33,000 rai of Ob Luang National Park in Chiang Mai’s Hot district.

7-Eleven in Thailand Reports Record Income of 399 Billion Baht, plans expansion

CP All has revealed business profit results for 2023 for 7-Eleven, in which the convenience stores had an overall income of 399 billion baht, having a gross profit of 112 billion baht and increasing from the previous year by 16.1%.

CP All stated the increasing profit and income was from an increase in average sales of 5.5%, or 80,837 baht daily on average in each 7-11. It was reported that each customer spent 83 baht on average per bill and each store had 965 customers daily on average. Continued …

Boat Carrying Chinese Tourists Capsizes, All Safely Rescued

A long-tail boat carrying seven Chinese tourists plus the vessel’s crew members capsized off Krabi yesterday, but fortunately all were safely rescued by a passing boat. The accident occurred near Koh Lao Lading island, around 300 meters from Koh Hong, with the two islands being part of Krabi’s Than Bok Khorani National Park.

Koh Samui Sees Increase in Visitors Following Visa Exemptions

Wiwat Chuenban, the chairman of the Surat Thani Provincial Tourism Industry Council, revealed an increasing number of foreign and Thai tourists visiting Koh Samui in January and February.

After a visa exemption for Chinese tourists, there were four direct flights from Chengdu, China, to Surat Thani in one week. There was also a direct flight route from Taiwan to Surat Thani, as well, resulting in a surging number of bookings of more than 672 hotels, and 25,000 rooms were reserved, according to Wiwat. 5,000 Chinese tourists a day on Phuket over Chinese New Year

Chinese tourists have descended on Phuket to celebrate Chinese New Year, pushing hotel occupancy on the island to 81%. Phuket has long been a popular destination for Chinese travelers due its strong Chinese heritage and ancestry.

The director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand says the number of Chinese arrivals has jumped to between 4,000 and 5,000 a day. Lertchai Wangtrakuldee says this is the highest number of arrivals of any nationality and the island expects to see revenue of 6.8 billion baht from the holiday period. Continued …

A 35-year-old Chinese man on vacation with his family in Pattaya for the Chinese New Year reportedly fell to his death from a condo in north Pattaya yesterday afternoon. The incident took place at approximately 2pm at a condo in central Pattaya whose name has been withheld pending further investigation.

Suvarnabhumi’s capacity to increase after third runway is operational in July

The construction of the third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be completed in time for its use in July, Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said Sunday. Once the new runway is in use, the airport capacity will be increased from 67 flights per hour to 94 flights per hour, Suriya added.

8-year-old becomes the youngest to windsurf across the Gulf of Thailand

Water sports history was written yesterday when eight-year-old Thanawat “Shane” Promwaen became the youngest to windsurf 107 kilometers (66 miles) across the Gulf of Thailand – a claim to fame he most wanted as a gift for his ninth birthday this coming Sunday. It was a case of “third time lucky” for Shane, whose two previous attempts at the epic crossing were scuppered by poor wind conditions.

The boy wonder achieved his kite foil crossing in just four hours and 10 minutes – the fastest time yet for windsurfers of any age. He even beat the four hours and 45 minutes crossing time recorded by a jetskier. Thailand’s wee windsurfing wizard was flagged-off from Surfspot in Hua Hin and landed at Pattaya Kitesurfing Clubloongchat on Na Jomtien Beach.

Unsafe levels of smog cover upper Thailand

 

Forty-eight from all 77 provinces, especially those in the northeast, experienced hazardous levels of ultrafine dust on Thursday morning, according to the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA).

GISTDA reported at 10am that 13 provinces were blanketed by red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.8 to 97.7 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air over the past 24 hours. The government’s safe threshold for PM2.5 is 37.5 µg/m³, while the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommend 25 µg/m³. Continued …

Young organ donor saves lives after death in Hua Hin

Doctors from Hua Hin Hospital and the Thai Red Cross Society have posthumously honored a 13-year-old patient for donating organs following his tragic death.

Patcharaphon Srilert, 13, from Hua Hin recently passed away from a brain aneurysm, with his family choosing to donate his organs to assist numerous patients awaiting treatment. The donated organs, which include the liver, kidneys, and heart valves, were transported from Hua Hin Hospital to Chulalongkorn Hospital by the Thai Red Cross. Continued …

New policies raise prices paid for agricultural products

The prices paid for several agricultural products have increased in the past six months thanks to the Commerce Ministry’s new policies, Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said on Thursday

Phumtham, who is also a a deputy prime minister, said that in the past six months the prices of Hom Mali and sticky rice rose by 12%, tapioca by 49%, oil palm by 9%, rubber by 22%, corn for animal feed by 6%, shallot up 27%, and oranges by 57%. 44.3% jump in spending for inbound Chinese New Year bookings

Data from leading global travel service provider Trip.com Group has revealed that Thailand will see an increase of 44.3% in total trip expenditure for inbound bookings when comparing this year’s Chinese New Year (CNY) festive period with 2023’s CNY period, with expenditure for outbound travelers increasing by 70.8%.

The increase in spending may be attributed to Southeast Asian tourists taking longer trips, traveling beyond Southeast Asia for the 2024 Chinese New Year period. Elephant Tramples Owner to Death

Thailand said not in a big enough crisis to warrant huge loan for digital wallet

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has come up with an opinion on the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, questioning its transparency and necessity in the current economic climate.

Thai rice exports face fraught year ahead

Myriad risk factors still loom over rice exports this year, notably the volatility of exchange rates, the declining competitiveness of Thai rice, intense price competition, the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon, and India’s restrictive export policy, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Assn.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, the association’s honorary president, said the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted global milled rice production would remain stable at 513 million tons this year, with China the largest producer at 144 million tons, followed by India at 132 million tons.
