Soft or hard landing for Thai economy?

Personally, I am sure the Thai economy will crash this year. I can even estimate the time when the crash will start. It is likely to be the month of May, as several big economic bombs will explode that month.

Confirmation of this belief came in December 2023’s economic data. The most disturbing part is industry’s capacity utilization rate of 56.2% (seasonally adjusted), which is the second lowest in the world. The world’s lowest is Nigeria! Continued …

A Big Reason Thailand’s Culinary Scene Is Thriving? Female Chefs

When the lights dimmed on the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand awards in Bangkok on Dec. 13, history had been made. Chudaree Debhakam of Baan Tepa had become the first Thai female chef to lead a two-Michelin-star restaurant and Garima Arora the first female Indian chef to clinch two stars for her dining room Gaa.

Both women are very much in the minority, not just within Bangkok’s culinary community but in the international food world. Just over 6% of Michelin-starred establishments globally — one, two and three stars combined — are currently helmed by female chefs. This translates to 219 restaurants out of 3,470 restaurants as of Jan. 18, according to Bloomberg analysis of Michelin Guide data. Continued …

I retired and moved to Hua Hin; it’s cheap, and I feel more respected here than in the UK

I’ve always traveled and been around people from other nations — American, German, Swiss, French, and many UK people. Two years ago, when I was 73 and living in Spain, I started exploring my long-term retirement options.

I had a place in Spain for nearly 40 years. My father was in a care home there. It had all the amenities and the support, but I’d never been able to make Spanish friends. That, and the cost, made me decide not to retire to Spain myself. Continued …

Will Thailand’s digital wallet scheme rev up the economy?

The government is betting big on a unique economic stimulus: a 10,000-baht digital wallet for most Thais over the age of 16. But will this cash injection actually boost the economy, or simply fizzle out, leaving a huge public debt for taxpayers?

According to the World Bank, the answer hinges on one key question: how much will people spend? International studies cited by the bank suggest that the impact of such “helicopter money” depends on two main factors: Continued …

The government’s expressed determination to prevent a hike in energy prices during the last two months of 2023 was met with cheers from the public and dismay from the Energy Regulatory Commission, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and related agencies.

Obviously, keeping energy prices stable is good politics. But is it also bad economics? My answer is a resounding “yes”. Let me explain why. Continued …

Nissan failed to recognize how quickly Thais would turn to EVs

Thais have traditionally preferred Japanese cars for their personal vehicles, but in the competitive EV market, China is winning, hands down.

One of the reasons is, of course, price: Since 2018, thanks to the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement, electric cars imported from China enjoy zero import duty. Continued …

Will Srettha’s administration have the political will to stop smog problem?

Bangkok, a city famed for its cultural vibrancy and bustling street life, is now grappling with a persistent and dangerous environmental crisis: severe air pollution. At the heart of this crisis is the PM2.5 particulate matter, tiny particles that pose serious health risks due to their ability to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream.

The smog in Bangkok, characterized by high levels of PM2.5, is a complex issue, with agricultural burning to support large-scale corporate agricultural operations being a significant contributing factor. With the new government under Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin in power, there’s a pressing question: Will this administration confront the corporations that are implicated in these unhealthy practices? Electric mass transit pledge to zap pollution in Chiang Mai

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin pledged to foster the development of electric mass transit systems as a solution to the persistent air pollution issues plaguing the northern province. The Thai prime minister noted that the fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) levels had considerably decreased since his visit last year.

(Editor note: While Expat News is “all in” on electric vehicles – as long as the energy is supplied by renewable sources – the PM seems to be missing the boat on this decision. The main cause of the relentless smog is not fossil fuel-powered vehicles, it’s the burning of farm fields and waste. Is he, as the previous article suggests, avoiding the real problem because of corporate interests?)

The air quality has indeed improved since April of the previous year when the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) detected 302 hotspots, thereby escalating the situation to a critical level. The air pollution problem has adversely affected tourism in Chiang Mai, deterring both local and international tourists due to potential health risks. Continued …

Mixed reactions to Thailand’s proposed cannabis law from tourism industry

The recent draft law on cannabis and hemp, targeting to limit recreational use, is garnering mixed reactions from Thailand’s tourism industry. While it could potentially lead to the closure of several dispensaries, industry insiders feel it wouldn’t have a significant impact on the overall tourism landscape, as cannabis and hemp aren’t primary attractions for international visitors.

The bill, endorsed by Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew, aims to restrict the recreational consumption of cannabis and hemp, focusing primarily on medical use. The draft bill is awaiting Cabinet approval before being presented to the House of Representatives for review. Continued …

Thailand seeks public opinion on draft to end recreational cannabis use

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is on a mission to stimulate tourism, focusing on boosting revenue in 55 secondary provinces by 20%, aiming for a grand total of 91 million trips this year. This ambitious goal, however, falls short of the mark for key provinces.

Thailand’s escalating smog crisis: Choking smog in 55 provinces

People in 55 of the 77 provinces were breathing dirty air this morning, with red-coded pollution levels in 20 provinces, mainly in the Central Plains.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 38.7 to 113.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. The government-set safe threshold is 37.5µg/m³. Continued …

Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers.
