Southeast Asia is the second most-affected region in the world when it comes to road accidents, after Africa, and Thailand “tragically leads in this statistics”, said UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt on Monday in Bangkok.

Department of National Parks Seeks Leads in Trap Killing of Wild Elephant

The director-general of Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has ordered an investigation into a trap that killed a wild elephant in Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary, Loei Province. Meanwhile, the head of Protected Area Regional Office 8 has filed a police report at Phu Ruea Police Station, urging swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Authorities yesterday discovered the body of a tuskless adult male wild elephant, known as a “Si Dor,” in the Nam Rin stream in Ban Song Khon, Pla Ba subdistrict, Phu Ruea district. Thai Rice Exports Surge 22% in First 9 Months

Thailand exported 7,448,941 tons of rice worth 172.019 billion baht in the first nine months of 2024 (January-September), an increase of 22% in volume and 45.8% in value compared to the same period in 2023, according to Charoen Laothamatas, president of the Rice Exporters Association of Thailand.

He stated that white rice led exports with 4,702,455 tons (up 42%), followed by jasmine rice with 1,233,108 tons (up 9%), parboiled rice with 814,791 tons (down 28.2%), Thai fragrant rice with 487,587 tons (up 42.5%) and glutinous rice with 211,000 tons (up 15.7%). Continued …

AIS reports Bt52.2 billion in Q3 revenue

Advanced Info Service (AIS) posted total revenue of 52.2 billion baht and a net profit of around 8.7 billion baht in the third quarter of this year.

The growth of AIS’s profit and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) were driven by more efficient cost management, a decrease in capital expenditure for network expansion, reduced competition of the market, especially in mobile services, along with a boost from the tourism sector, according to Pisut Ngamvijitvong, senior vice president of the securities analysis department at Kasikorn Securities (KS). In June, European carrier Lufthansa Group announced the addition of an environmental charge of between €1-72 (36-2,647 baht) on departures from EU member states, Switzerland, Norway and the UK, effective as of Jan. 1, 2025. Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. High blood pressure was the top medical condition among universal healthcare service outpatients in 2023, according to Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO).

M16 rifle linked to over 25 deaths in southern Thailand

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. The NESDC Office explained that living in their own houses also counted as a cost poor families did not have to bear. Continued …

Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

The company’s managing director, Kessara Thanyalakpark, said that rising household debt was among factors that hurt Bangkokians’ ability to purchase houses. “Currently, there is a disconnect between the demand for housing and the high prices set by property developers,” she said. Continued …

Foreign investment in Thailand rallied 60% to 134 billion baht in value for the first nine months of this year, with Japan continuing to top the list of source countries, a government spokesman said on Sunday.

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. Thailand’s exports to the United States in September grew 18.1% year on year to the value of US$5.01 billion (169.13 billion baht), the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) said on Monday.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) is intensifying its electric vehicle (EV) solution services, notably by expanding charging outlets, to capitalize on the burgeoning EV market and support Thailand’s carbon-reduction goals.

The Role of Fossil Fuels in Southeast Asia’s Energy Mix

Southeast Asia’s energy landscape continues to be defined by its reliance on fossil fuels despite international efforts to promote cleaner alternatives. According to the IEA’s 2024 Southeast Asia Energy Outlook, fossil fuels have played a central role in meeting the region’s rapidly increasing energy demand over the past two decades. From 2010 to 2023, the region’s energy needs were primarily addressed through coal, oil, and natural gas, with coal being the dominant source.

Coal has been Southeast Asia’s primary beneficiary of energy growth, accounting for around 50% of the region’s electricity generation. Countries like Indonesia, which holds nearly 90% of the region’s coal production, have relied on coal to fuel their expanding industrial sectors. EVs on roads worldwide expected to number 85 million in 2025

By the end of 2025, an estimated 85 million electric vehicles (EVs), including cars, buses, vans and heavy trucks, are expected to be on the road, according to the latest forecast from U.S.-based research firm Gartner Inc. released on Monday.

Jonathan Davenport, Gartner’s senior analyst, said that despite several hurdles affecting the EV market over the past few months, the firm is projecting the number of EVs in use globally to total 64 million units in 2024 and increase by 33% in 2025. Continued …

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning, highlighting light rain in Bangkok and its vicinity, the central region, and the east, while the south braces for heavy rainfall affecting 60% of the area.

Violence erupts in Deep South as deadline on Tak Bai case nears

Three violent attacks were carried out in Pattani and Narathiwat Wednesday evening and early Thursday in what are suspected to be symbolic attacks related to the Tak Bai massacre case, the statute of limitations on which is due to expire today.

Khalijah Musa was just 12 years old when her brother Sari was stuffed into a Thai army truck, hands bound, joining a pile of arrested protesters who all suffocated to death.

Twenty years after the Oct, 25, 2004, tragedy, known as the “Tak Bai massacre”, Musa and the other relatives of the 78 victims are mourning the fact that the killers will never be brought to justice. Chinese-grown Shine Muscat grapes contaminated with dangerous chemicals

Shine Muscat grapes imported from China have been found to be heavily laced with dangerous chemicals, including chlorpyrifos, the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-Pan) and the Foundation for Consumers announced.

The two consumer protection organizations recently conducted laboratory tests on 24 samples of the juicy and popular grapes purchased from retail outlets, vendors and wet markets. Nine samples were imported from China, while the remaining 15 samples were imported from unknown sources. Continued …

Thailand’s gold prices take a dive

Gold prices have taken a nosedive in Thailand, with gold ornaments now pegged at 44,100 baht per baht weight. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reports a 300-baht drop from yesterday, putting an end to the recent upward streak.

As of this morning, gold bullion is fetching 43,500 baht to buy and 43,600 baht to sell per baht weight. Meanwhile, 96.5% purity gold ornaments are being snapped up for 42,720.88 baht but hitting the market at 44,100 baht. Continued …

Phuket cannabis shop owner finds thieves for a taste of revenge

One of the cannabis shop owners in Phuket who fell victim to two foreign thieves, yesterday tracked down the suspects and physically assaulted them at their accommodation.

Several cannabis shop owners in Phuket reached out to other vendors to warn them after losing products to the two foreign thieves, whose identities remain undisclosed. CCTV footage from some of the ganja shops showed the thieves stealing entire jars of products from each shop. Continued …

Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. It added that the government’s state welfare card scheme in 2023 accepted applications from those who had missed the application deadlines in the previous rounds, allowing more people to gain access to state-funded services and benefits. Thailand’s vehicle production hits the brakes

The automotive industry in Thailand has experienced a significant downturn in vehicle production, with September seeing a total of 122,277 units produced, marking a 25.5% decrease from the same period last year.

This decline reflects a 15.8% reduction in vehicles manufactured for export, totalling 87,666 units, and a 42.3% drop in vehicles produced for domestic sales, amounting to 34,611 units. Continued …

Finance Ministry unveils 2025 state welfare card for low-income boost

The Ministry of Finance has rolled out new registrations for the 2025 state welfare card, aiming to wrap up all the eligibility checks by March 31 next year. A fresh round of financial lifelines is coming with 1,545 baht heading straight into the pockets of those who qualify.

China’s Cosco Shipping invests $110 million in Thailand terminals

Costco Shipping Ports Ltd. has acquired 12.5% and 30% ownership holdings in Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co., (TLT) and Hutchison Laem Chabang Terminal (HLT).

ZHAO Fengnian, the chief accountant, signed the project agreement with collaborating firms at the project signing event in Vietnam on Wednesday, in the presence of ZHU Tao, the chairman of the board of Costco Shipping Ports. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $110 million, which includes the Berth A2
in TLT, Berths A3, C1-C2 and D1-D3 in HLT, where D1-D3 is partly under construction. Continued …

Bangkok housing market set to decline amid poor economy

SCB EIC, the research center of Siam Commercial Bank, predicts that the transfer of new residential units in Greater Bangkok will decline by 10% this year, with a further contraction of 1%-3% projected for 2025, mainly due to the country’s sluggish economy.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning about the intensifying tropical storm Trami, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to lower northern, central, eastern, and upper southern regions, including Bangkok and its vicinity. Residents are advised to be cautious of flash floods and forest runoffs.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms in 40% of the area, with heavy rain in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces. Two Thai Women Arrested for Scamming Tourists with Fake Resort Bookings in Pattaya

Two Thai women were arrested for creating fake Facebook pages to scam tourists out of deposits for luxury resort bookings in Pattaya. The suspects were arrested by Tourist Police at their residences in Chonburi and Samut Prakan provinces. Both face charges of “fraud by entering false information into a computer system”.

According to police, the suspects created fake Facebook pages for a high-end resort on Koh Larn, Pattaya, to scam tourists into paying deposits for room bookings. Once the victims transferred the money, the suspects blocked them on Facebook and looked for new targets. Continued …

Nationwide Alcohol Sales Ban Set Thursday as Thailand Marks End of Buddhist Lent

The end of Buddhist Lent, Awk Phansa, will take place on Thursday, and a nationwide sales ban on alcohol will be enforced for 24 hours.

Weather warning for heavy rain in 40 provinces

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued another serious weather warning for 40 provinces, urging residents, especially in Bangkok, its surrounding areas, the southern region, and the eastern region, to prepare for heavy rainfall affecting up to 70% of these regions.

In the southern region, the eastern coast will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with some areas getting heavy rain. Provinces affected include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The temperatures will be between 23-25°C at the lowest and 30-34°C at the highest. The Mun River burst its banks on Saturday morning, sending a huge volume of water to flood paddy fields and low-lying areas in Phimai district of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Water levels in the river were high in several locations, particularly upstream areas of Phimai Dam.

Suitability index for buying property and a new car continues to fall

The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has reported that the suitability index of purchasing a new car in September 2024 declined for the seventh consecutive month, reaching its lowest point since March 2023. The index for September 2024 was recorded at 67.0, down from 70.2 in August.

The Finance Ministry is confident that revenue collection for fiscal 2024, which ended on Sept. 30, met its target as collections gradually improved, bolstered by higher contributions than expected from the Revenue Department and state-owned enterprises.

Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office, said the latest report on net revenue collection from the Finance Ministry indicates for the first 11 months of fiscal 2024 (October 2023 to August 2024), the government collected net revenue (after tax refunds) of 2.452 trillion baht, which is 17.4 billion baht or 0.7% less than the target.
