I live in Los Angeles County, California, and there are over 250,000-plus expat Thai’s living here. There was a time when a Thai Airline used to fly direct to Los Angeles. It was wonderful, just a little over 13 hours flight time. Does anyone know when Thailand might have an airline to fly direct to Los Angeles?” – Bob

PKK community fights factory stench, faces relocation woes

For years, the residents of the Ban Thammarat community in Prachuap Khiri Khan have been tormented by the foul odor emitted by the wastewater from a local rubber factory. Despite their pleas for regular inspections and serious action toward wastewater management, the issue remains unresolved, forcing some to relocate.

The community, located in Area 5, has long complained about the factory, which purchases rubber waste and discharges untreated wastewater onto personal land. The stench has permeated the area, affecting their daily lives. Continued …

Thailand shifts gears with online vehicle registration

The Thai government has launched an online vehicle registration service, providing a more convenient and time-saving option for the public. This move aligns with the government’s digital transformation policy, which aims to facilitate access to public services. As a result, citizens can now book a single number plate for each vehicle.

Ratchada Thanadirek, deputy government spokesperson, highlighted that this initiative is part of the government’s broader endeavor to promote digital transformation in public sector organizations. The policy, led by former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, focuses on digitalization to streamline processes and enhance service delivery. Continued …

Exports decline for 10th straight month

The value of Thai exports dropped for a 10th consecutive month in July, and by more than forecast, mainly because global commodity prices have fallen back from the highs reached last year in the first few months of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Weak global demand has been exacerbated by high interest rates and tougher lending practices, resulting in a deceleration of consumer spending, said Keerati Rushchano, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Commerce. Continued …

Tackling Thailand’s water problems

Thailand has experienced an unusually prolonged period of water crises over recent years. The dry seasons are becoming longer and drier, while the rainy seasons are shorter but with more intense rainfall. This oscillating pattern of droughts and floods has become harder to predict and is causing more serious impacts.

Solving the problem is no easy task. Water management in Thailand is complex and daunting because there are many factors involved, some of which conflict with one another — water shortage caused by growing water demand in various sectors, serious floods, rapid urbanization, land use change, as well as outdated urban water systems and irrigation infrastructure. As climate change intensifies, these pressures and problems are harder to deal with. Continued …

How the Thai economy is affected by delay in forming new government

If the political situation remains stable, the Thai economy is expected to continue moving forward for the remaining part of this year. The economy has shown signs of improvement moving into the second half of the year, and GDP growth is projected to be at least 3% for the whole year.

On the flip side, prolonged political uncertainty may affect the economy and international confidence next year. As the political temperature rises while we await the formation of a new government following May’s election, many are concerned that the transition period could hit the economy and international confidence, especially if there are prolonged uncertainties. I went rafting on Thailand’s own ‘Little Amazon’

Jom is a man of few words. Our grasp of each other’s native language – my English, his Thai – is also minimal, meaning we don’t have a lot to say to each other. Then there are the betel nut leaves balled up inside his cheek. Since he’s continually chewing on them, communication between us is doubly hard.

When Jom speaks, which is rare, it tends to be monosyllabic, and grunt-like. “Head,” he’ll say, imploring us to duck when an overhanging branch threatens to knock our melons off. Or “Oh!” when our bamboo raft brushes against a granite boulder unexpectedly. Continued …

The incoming government must act cautiously concerning calls to relist cannabis as a scheduled narcotic, warned Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul this week. Chiang Mai: Hipster magnet meets Buddhist cultural capital

The 2020s version of the hipster is a far cry from the beatniks or hippies of the swinging ’60s. The modern hipster is likely to be a coffee snob, shop at an organic food store, profit from their creative pursuits.

You’re likely to bump into one of them in a songthaew or what tourists call red cars in Chiang Mai — a sort of repurposed pickup truck that is used as public transport. Thailand’s northern hub has long been at the center of the country’s culture, language and religion. Today it’s also a magnet for solo travelers and pilgrims who have over 300 temples to choose from.
